[AI] stem cell therapy in the treatment of eye disease
Dear friends Hello As you know about the research of stem cell in the treatment of eye disease is going on at full swing. I have decided to transmit the information about research to you. Today I am starting with very basic of stem cell. If you have any queries you can write to me or phone me. In future I am planning to circulate different articles on medical subject related to disabilities. ARTICLE 1: BASIC ABOUT STEM CELL What are stem cells? Removing the maternal nucleus during nuclear transfer Stem cells are the master cells of the human body. They can divide to produce copies of themselves And many other types of cell. They are found in various parts of the human body at every stage of development from embryo to adult. Stem cells taken from Embryos that are just a few days old can turn into any of the 300 different types of cell that make up the adult body. Why are stem cells useful? Because stem cells are so versatile, they could potentially be used to repair and replace damaged human tissue. In future it is hoped that stem cells could Be used to treat and cure a variety of diseases and injuries including Parkinson's disease, eye diseases like retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, stroke and diabetes. Where do the embryos come from? Embryonic stem cells can be taken from spare human embryos left over from fertility treatments, or from cloned human embryos developed in the laboratory. This can only occur if fully informed consent has been obtained from the donors. One method for making cloned embryos is called nuclear transfer. During This process, genetic material or DNA from a donor is inserted into an empty egg cell. After the resulting hybrid cell has been 'activated' (normally using An electrical pulse), it begins to divide, creating new cells and forming a cloned embryo. dr. jitender aggarwal ceo sarthakeducational trust dg-2, 248-a vikas puri new delhi-110018 phone 011-28538994 mobile: 9818711463 To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Information required about rehabilitation of VH persons
Hi friends Recently I had been to Shankar Netralaya, Chennai for an annual check up and felt very happy to know that they have started a new low vision department for creating awareness among VH persons about the assistive technology and the organisations working towards rehabilitation of VH persons. Though I expressed my opinion directly to them stating that this should have been done a long time ago, I felt very happy that it happened, better late than never. It seems that they have come to know about Access India, Enable India, Eye Way --- very recently. They have asked me to provide more information in this regard and I promised to do the same to the best of my efforts. So friends, I want information about organisations, web sites, persons working for VH, low vision aids available, assistive technology and anything which could help blind persons and persons with low vision. Kindly provide me with all the information you have so that I can forward the same to them. -- G. Pradeep Kapoor vbfoundat...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Friday, July 17, 2009 12:28 PM Subject: [AI] Driving for the Blind - A dream come true Dear Friends, I found this snippet of news. The event pertains to the USA. Anyone interested in India? Col Pradeep Kapoor Blacksburg, VA - Blind people in Virginia are getting the chance to drive, thanks to a special dirt buggy developed by students at the Virginia Tech College of Engineering. The retrofitted four-wheel dirt buggy developed by the Blind Driver Challenge team uses laser range finders, an instant voice command interface and other innovative technologies to guide blind drivers as they steer, brake, and accelerate. It was great! said Wes Majerus of Baltimore, the first blind person to drive the buggy on a closed course at the Virginia Tech campus this summer. Majerus is an access technology specialist with the National Federation of the Blind's Jernigan Institute. Mark Riccobono takes a test drive Rather than producing a fully-autonomous vehicle, the team designed the vehicle so that the blind motorist has complete control of the driving process, as any sighted driver would. This approach led to new challenges, including how to effectively convey the high bandwidth of information from the laser sensors scanning the vehicle's surrounding environment to the driver fast enough and accurate enough to allow safe driving. As a result, the team developed non-visual interface technologies, including a vibrating vest for feedback on speed, a click counter steering wheel with audio cues, spoken commands for directional feedback, and a unique tactile map interface that utilizes compressed air to provide information about the road and obstacles surrounding the vehicle. Once the technology is perfected, laws now barring the blind from driving and public perception must be changed, Riccobono said. The team is already planning major changes to the technology, including replacing the dirt buggy vehicle with a fully electric car. The all-electric vehicle would reduce the vibration which can cause problems to the laser sensor, and will provide clean electric power for the computing units. The team will bring the Blind Driver Challenge vehicle to the National Federation of the Blind's Youth Slam summer camp event held July 26 to August 1 in College Park, Md. Re: [AI] Driving for the Blind
Too many, too many, Our roads would be choked with so many blind drivers! I believe driving is an activity fraught with serious consequences, and should not be taken so lightly. What I opine is that the original mail on this issue mentioned a technology providing non-visual feedback to the driver which may be used for blind to drive a vehicle. It has been tried on closed course, and it may take ages before it can hit Indian roads. Blind persons may enjoy driving on special closed roads, or cycling on beaches, that is another matter. Jumping with joy at a scrap of a news is not justified in my view. I can understand the joy at even the thought of regaining lost joys as many of us are late blind, however, cluttering the list with so many I-TOO's, is too much!!!
