Re: [AI] Removing Page Breaks in MS Word documents.
If the numbering is automatic, I change the style of the paragraph to normal by using ctrl+shift+n. It, however, will discontinue the paragraph. If you are inside a numbered or bulleted list and you want a simple line break without a new number or a bullet, press shift+enter to insert a common line break. As regards removing manual page breaks in ms word, I suggest the following steps: 1. Use ctrl+h to invoke the find and replace dialogue box. 2. insert ^m (caret m) in the find what field. Caret m indicates manual page break in ms word as caret p indicates paragraph. 3. Leave the replace with box blank. 4. Press ctrl+a to activate the replace all option. 5. Word will announce how many replacements have been made. Activate the ok button in the message window and press escape to close the find and replace dialogue box. Now check the document. If it fails, you can always undo this action using ctrl+z. You can also use ^p to remove paragraphs. It works in ms word 2002 and 2003. Best regards, Amiyo Biswas. Re: [AI] Tasting The Light - Device Lets The Blind See With TheirTongues
Is this machine available for trial? Could any of the list members living in the U.S. try it out and let us know how comfortable it actually feels using it? Geetha - Original Message - From: shahnaz shycur...@yahoo.co.in To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, August 24, 2009 1:53 PM Subject: [AI] Tasting The Light - Device Lets The Blind See With TheirTongues August 13, 2009 Tasting the Light: Device Lets the Blind See with Their Tongues A pair of sunglasses wired to an electric lollipop helps the visually impaired regain optical sensations via a different pathway By Mandy Kendrick Neuroscientist Paul Bach-y-Rita hypothesized in the 1960s that we see with our brains not our eyes. Now, a new device trades on that thinking and aims to partially restore the experience of vision for the blind and visually impaired by relying on the nerves on the tongue's surface to send light signals to the brain. Legal blindness is defined by U.S. law as vision that is 20/200 or worse, or has a field of view that is less than 20 degrees in diameter. The condition afflicts more than one million Americans over the age of 40, according to the National Institutes of Health. Adult vision loss costs the country about $51.4 billion per year. About two million optic nerves are required to transmit visual signals from the retina—the portion of the eye where light information is decoded or translated into nerve pulses—to the brain's primary visual cortex. With BrainPort, the device being developed by neuroscientists at Middleton, Wisc.–based Wicab, Inc. (a company co-founded by the late Back-y-Rita), visual data are collected through a small digital video camera about 1.5 centimeters in diameter that sits in the center of a pair of sunglasses worn by the user. Bypassing the eyes, the data are transmitted to a handheld base unit, which is a little larger than a cell phone. This unit houses such features as zoom control, light settings and shock intensity levels as well as a central processing unit (CPU), which converts the digital signal into electrical pulses—replacing the function of the retina. From the CPU, the signals are sent to the tongue via a lollipop, an electrode array about nine square centimeters that sits directly on the tongue. Each electrode corresponds to a set of pixels. White pixels yield a strong electrical pulse, whereas black pixels translate into no signal. Densely packed nerves at the tongue surface receive the incoming electrical signals, which feel a little like Pop Rocks or champagne bubbles to the user. It remains unclear whether the information is then transferred to the brain's visual cortex, where sight information is normally sent, or to its somatosensory cortex, where touch data from the tongue is interpreted, Wicab neuroscientist Aimee Arnoldussen says. We don't know with certainty, she adds. Like learning to ride a bike In any case, within 15 minutes of using the device, blind people can begin interpreting spatial information via the BrainPort, says William Seiple, research director at the nonprofit vision healthcare and research organization Lighthouse International. The electrodes spatially correlate with the pixels so that if the camera detects light fixtures in the middle of a dark hallway, electrical stimulations will occur along the center of the tongue. It becomes a task of learning, no different than learning to ride a bike, Arnoldussen says, adding that the process is similar to how a baby learns to see. Things may be strange at first, but over time they become familiar. Seiple works with four patients who train with the BrainPort once a week and notes that his patients have learned how to quickly find doorways and elevator buttons, read letters and numbers, and pick out cups and forks at the dinner table without having to fumble around. At first, I was amazed at what the device could do, he said. One guy started to cry when he saw his first letter. Wicab will submit BrainPort to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval at the end of the month, says Robert Beckman, president and chief executive officer of the company. He notes that the device could be approved for market by the end of 2009 at a cost of about $10,000 per machine. Looking for local information? Find it on Yahoo! It applies to the entire Banking sector. The official of Citibank was on the sub committee which framed the Guidelines. these things take time to implement and its no point pushing the matter through the Courts. I am not still sure how binding are the IBA guidelines on Banks. As a principle no one can argue with the need for accessibility. [AI] article 6 bad breath
ARTICLE 6: BAD BREATH (HALITOSIS) In medical terms bad breath is otherwise known as Halitosis or oral malodor. Most commonly referred to as bad breath or sour smelling breath, this is a disorder that arises from diseases of the gums or the tooth. Sometimes it can also result from intestinal disorders. This at times may be a temporary phase and it may go after some time when you follow proper dental hygiene. In case that you find that your problem persists then you should consult your doctor or if you think it is a gum related disorder, then you should consult a dentist. What causes Halitosis? Any food particle that decays produces a sour smelling stench. The food particles may settle in depression in the teeth or the particles may remain on the tongue or stick tot eh roof of the mouth. The odor may also be caused as a result of diabetes, gum diseases, drugs, and infection in the liver or kidneys, poor diet, smoking stress and tooth decay. How to Lower Risks of developing Halitosis? It is quite necessary to follow a few simple precautions and rules to keep halitosis at bay. They are (a) Brushing of your teeth twice a day is necessary. Follow it up with some vigorous flossing. (b) Make use of a good toothbrush and replace them one in every two months. (c) Do not make use of mouth washes that have any flavoring in them, this increases the chance of your mouth stinking in the morning. (d) Stress in one main contributing factor towards mouth odor so one must try to avoid stress to the maximum. Get some good exercise and some sunlight on your face. (e) Try to avoid foods that stick to your mouth after you have them; this so mainly for dinner or a late supper. Foods like sweets, meats and cheese stick to the roof of your mouth and this will bring out the bad smell in your mouth. Halitosis is kept at bay by the presence of saliva in your mouth. The saliva washes away the food particles and keeps your mouth clean. As saliva produces in the mouth can wash away the halitosis, the production of saliva is brought down when one is asleep. As the food particles that remains in your mouth can cause these problems, brush your teeth well before going to bed. dr. jitender aggarwal ceo sarthak educational trust phone 9818711463 www.disabilitymanagementcell.com To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. I think pressing escape silences the sound clip.
