[AI] Dolphin Vision

2010-05-01 Thread shahnaz

Fri, Apr 30 12:25 PM

London, April 30 (ANI): A four-year-old blind boy named Jamie Aspland uses
echolocation to see - just like dolphins.
Jamie makes clicking noises with his tongue that makes him virtually know where
things around him are lying.
It's amazing, his 39-year-old mother Deborah says, Since learning the skill
we can walk to the park and Jamie no longer has to hold my hand.
Jamie - a twin who was born blind - was taught the revolutionary technique by a
US expert t.
Deborah says that Jamie became an expert of the technique after taking just
three lessons, reports The Sun.
Jamie is one of the few children in the world who have been taught how to copy
dolphins by Californian Daniel Kish, who is himself blind.
Kish names his echo-location skill as flash-sonar.
It provides one with information of a fair amount of detail at distances of
dozens of metres.
Working with Jamie and his family was terrific. He he was very responsive, he
said.
Knowing Jamie can be safe and will understand what is happening, where the
traffic is and what's around him, will really help, Deborah said. (ANI)

 Hey all,
Feels great to write here after long, hope everyone is in health.
 Coming to question…
i am thinking to buy a new laptop in a few days in a range of RS. 35
 to 40 thousand.
Can you guys can give advices which model and company to go with?
Also, I have discovered that all the good laptops are now coming with
windows7. is it accessible for a nontechy like me to use the same with
 jaws?
i’ve heard somewhere that windows7 is not accessible with jaws 10. is it?
I remember a friend has been offering the jaws 11 as well, I’ve never
 used it personally though.
So i would appreciate to hear your responses on two things:
 1. which company and model you prefer in the range of around RS. 4
 that may be good enough?
 2. can windows7 be used with jaws? Also, I have to use ABBYY
finereader very frequently to scan my books. Any idea whether or not
it can be used on windows7?

Please drop in your responses and help this technologically challenged.

[AI] Campaign by Citizens Against UID

2010-05-01 Thread rambabu adikesavalu
Dear Friends,
Last few days there had been a lot of discussions on the newly proposed UID and
its usefulness on our list. Most of us believed that the inclusion of the
aspect of disability in the UID could be very useful because of its
multi-purpose utility.
However, I came across an article in Counter Currents, an online newsletter
which gives a completely different picture. Its a campaign by the citizens
against UID.
I thought that it would be nice if you could have some discussions on that
article's point of view.
So I am pasting below the article. Please go through it and give your critical
appraisal.
Regards,
Dr. A.Rambabu

Please Endorse: Citizens Against UID

By Citizens Against UID

29, April, 2010
Countercurrents.org

Kindly endorse the campaign against Unique Identification Number (UID),
government of India's effort to give a number to every Indian citizen
like they do to cattle before they are led to the slaughter house. It's
kind of racial profiling which can be abused in a country like India
where they use the census data to butcher people in riots ( remember
the
Gujarat pogrom). It's a violation of one's privacy, human rights and a
threat to democracy. And they are tagging it with the ongoing census.
There is a great threat that the information collected through census
can be passed onto the UID authority, which is headed by a corporate
CEO. It can be easily stated that it's not the Maoists the 'greatest
internal threat' to Indian democracy, but the UID is. Please endorse
this statement and pass it on to your friends and relatives who value
Indian democracy. Please endorse the statement by clicking here
We, representatives of people’ movements, mass organizations,
institutions and concerned individuals including all the undersigned
strongly oppose the potential tracking and profiling based
techno-governance tools such as the Unique Identification number (UID)
by the Government of India and the manner in which legitimate
democratic
processes have been undermined through this.
The proposed UID project seems to be perched on an anti-people
perspective and violates a number of basic rights guaranteed under Part
III of the Constitution of India including Articles 14, 15, 17, 19 and
21 viz., the Rights to equality, dignity, privacy, expression and the
right not to be discriminated against, The project seems to be aimed at
profiling people by pooling in biometric and retinal data pertaining to
an individual and could be potentially discriminatory in a country
where
caste identity is the most predominant socio-political marker. Further,
it is a travesty on the dignity and privacy of individuals. At another
level, given the fact that more than one third of our population live
below the substantial level called “poverty line” and without literacy

numeracy, a large section of our population would find itself unable to
handle this number in a meaningful way and thus face the danger of
virtually stripped of their citizenship and thereby the very legitimacy
of their existence on the land of this country.
This project which has been launched at a budgeted cost of INR 1900
Crores for the year 2010-2011 in a country where the Government has
officially declared that 400 million of its citizens are living below
poverty line is , thus an insult to the dignity of the Peoples of
India.
The project headed by a person of the rank of the Union Cabinet
Minister, whose appointment was not transparent and a staff overhead of
more than 100 is also working under the most non-transparent processes
and we fear that the decisions are made and influenced by vested
private
and corporate interests who have had a record of anti-people and
anti-democratic activities. There is no wide public discussion on the
feasibility or desirability of the project.
It is in this context that we have serious objections to the way the
decadal census process is being used to pitch the UID process and no
discussion on this has happened in any of the democratic forums
including the Parliament, which also transgresses n the right to
dignity
and privacy of individuals and their choice to opt out of the UID
process. If the UID continues to be tagged with the Census process – we
would also consider boycotting the same. It is a matter of great
concern
that the powers that be have deliberately kept silent on the inter
linkage between the UID and current mode of census
In this situation it is not clear which decisions are being made by the
private sector or

Re: [AI] Disclosing disability in CV

2010-05-01 Thread Amit Bhatt

I endorse to your opinion, Shadab.

Generally the employers specify the vacant position for persons with
disabilities. HR officials manage the database in some organizations in case
they have any disabled employee. So it barely matters to disclose the
disability in CV.

Another fact is that there are very a few companies where the disabled
employees are hired directly by the employers in India. And even if they
wish to appoint the disabled workers, they clearly mention about it, as I
have said in above line. So it is self-explanatory for both the side,
employers and candidates that only persons with disabilities may apply for
the mentioned position.

More often than not, private employers call the applicants for the interview
through any organization or consultancy. In this process, employers are
already informed about the disability of the candidate.

I also believe that disability is neither our quality nor any poor-quality,
and, employers hire us not for our disability, but for our ability. Hence,
to broach the note on the disability inResume, is not necessary in my
opinion.

On the other hand, seeing the trend of unacceptability, I am afraid -
there is a possibility that the moment the employer would read about
disability, he will reject the CV.

Hiding the disability, or to put it more appropriately, not mentioning
it in the CV should also be taken into consideration. If the CV is
shortlisted, the candidate will get an opportunity to talk up the
disability and demonstrate his abilities provided that he has a
laptop.

Vamshi sir you have wisely advised that the tasks that we can perform
using the assistive technology should be mentioned. But you will
readily agree that still there is a lot of ignorance about the
technology we use, and I know that it is hard to make others
understand that we are quite comfortable with computers.

This was a contrasting opinion, but bringing it forth was necessary so
that we can examine the pros and cons of the thing.

I personally think that it should be highlighted in such a way, that
it could attract the attention at 2nd or 3rd glance of your CV.
Asterisk it, bold it, but it should stand separate of cv’s format.

Hi,

I second Subramani sir's opinion.

Besides, exposing our disability before the employer is inevitable.
And by hiding it in the CV, we are only postponing the inevitable.

When we mention about our disability in the CV, we should make sure
that we also mention the coping strategies like mobility, assistive
technology etc. And also, as we know the job we are going to do, we
should write how we think we are fit for handling that particular job
despite the disability.

Leave the standard format of CV and customise it to each and every
job applied for.

Re: [AI] Disclosing disability in CV

2010-05-01 Thread Zujar Shabbir Kanchwala
My personal experience is that not mentioning the disability in CV/Resume
may not give an opportunity to the potential employer to decide whether to
call the candidate for the interview in the first place. There's no point in
going to an interview and failing due to the interviewer not being aware of
your disability. Not every employer may be able to provide you with vision
aids at workplace. Mentioning about your disability, on the contrary, helps
a willing employer to prepare for including a differently abled candidate in
the work-force.

I had been selected at four different places (not willing to point out on
the list) in the initial stage of my career and then rejected simply due to
those employers not being able to grasp that I can work comfortably with a
little adjustments to the screen display. Yes, those days I was not aware of
screen readers and even if I were, they seemed not in a position to acquire
it in their organizations.

After such unfavourable experiences, I decided to include my disability in
my Resume. When I was called for an interview from Mphasis, my current
employer, I first enquired whether the HR person calling me knows that I am
visually challenged. His consent helped me know that I would not have to
face a failure due to disability and I went for the interview.

Its good to disclose what you are right in the first place. Of course, this
may invite some bias but that's inevitable.

Hence,
to broach the note on the disability inResume, is not necessary in my
opinion.

Hey all,
Feels great to write here after long, hope everyone is in health.

Please drop in your responses and help this technologically challenged.

may be solved in the later versions. Some of the non techies of our

Subject: [AI] your precious advices required for laptop

Hey all,
Feels great to write here after long, hope everyone is in health.
Coming to question…
i am thinking to buy a new laptop in a few days in a range of RS. 35
to 40 thousand.
Can you guys can give advices which model and company to go with?
Also, I have discovered that all the good laptops are now coming with
windows7. is it accessible for a nontechy like me to use the same with
jaws?
i’ve heard somewhere that windows7 is not accessible with jaws 10. is
it?

I remember a friend has been offering the jaws 11 as well, I’ve never
used it personally though.
So i would appreciate to hear your responses on two things:
1. which company and model you prefer in the range of around RS. 4
that may be good enough?
2. can windows7 be used with jaws? Also, I have to use ABBYY
finereader very frequently to scan my books. Any idea whether or not
it can be used on windows7?

Please drop in your responses and help this technologically challenged.

Aisha sahani.

Re: [AI] Disclosing disability in CV

2010-05-01 Thread Amit Bhatt
As I have tried to indicate in my previous communication, if the employers
are ready to call the persons with disabilities for appearing in the
interview, obviously they would be aware about how a disabled person, say
Visually Challenged person, can work in the Office with the support of
various screen reading Application and other assistive technologies. If an
employer is not aware of how a Visually Impaired worker can work in the
company, they would simply not even think to open the position and arrange
the interview for us.

Thanks, Amit Bhatt

My personal experience is that not mentioning the disability in CV/Resume
may not give an opportunity to the potential employer to decide whether to
call the candidate for the interview in the first place. There's no point
in
going to an interview and failing due to the interviewer not being aware
of

your disability. Not every employer may be able to provide you with vision
aids at workplace. Mentioning about your disability, on the contrary,
helps
a willing employer to prepare for including a differently abled candidate
in

the work-force.

I had been selected at four different places (not willing to point out on
the list) in the initial stage of my career and then rejected simply due
to

those employers not being able to grasp that I can work comfortably with a
little adjustments to the screen display. Yes, those days I was not aware
of
screen readers and even if I were, they seemed not in a position to
acquire

it in their organizations.

After such unfavourable experiences, I decided to include my disability in
my Resume. When I was called for an interview from Mphasis, my current
employer, I first enquired whether the HR person calling me knows that I
am

visually challenged. His consent helped me know that I would not have to
face a failure due to disability and I went for the interview.

Its good to disclose what you are right in the first place. Of course,
this

may invite some bias but that's inevitable.

Zujar...

I endorse to your opinion, Shadab.

Generally the employers specify the vacant position for persons with
disabilities. HR officials manage the database in some organizations in
case

they have any disabled employee.

More often than not, private employers call the applicants for the
interview

through any organization or consultancy. In this process, employers are
already informed about the disability of the candidate.

I also believe that disability is neither our quality nor any
poor-quality,

and, employers hire us not for our disability, but for our ability. Hence,
to broach the note on the disability inResume, is not necessary in my
opinion.

Amit Bhatt

On the other hand, seeing the trend of unacceptability, I am afraid -
there is a possibility that the moment the employer would read about
disability, he will reject the CV.

Hiding the disability, or to put it more appropriately, not mentioning
it in the CV should also be taken into consideration. If the CV is
shortlisted, the candidate will get an opportunity to talk up the
disability and demonstrate his abilities provided that he has a
laptop.

Vamshi sir you have wisely advised that the tasks that we can perform
using the assistive technology should be mentioned. But you will
readily agree that still there is a lot of ignorance about

Re: [AI] net book

2010-05-01 Thread Prashant Verma
Go for a netbook if you want portability. if you are not going to carry the
computer around then you may invest in a laptop which has more processing
power and storage.
I have recently purchased a Samsung N210 and Samsung N140 for myself. I have
shifted most of my work to the netbook. Samsung is believed to have the best
keyboard among the netbooks. N210 is preloaded with Windows 7 and promises
at least 11 hour battery backup. It is available for Rs. 18500 in Delhi.

You may buy N148 which comes with DOS at Rs. 15000.
All these models have ATOM processor with 160 GB hard disk.

Regards,
Prashant.
