DISABLED WOMAN ‘STARVES TO DEATH AT HOME AFTER HER CARER MUM DIES’

*Stephanie Wolf declined offers of help with disabled daughter Sam*

Wednesday August 4,2010
By Sara Dixon

*A SEVERELY disabled young woman may have starved to death after her mother
and sole carer died leaving her unable to raise the alarm.*

The bodies of Stephanie Wolf, 67, and her daughter Sam, 29, were found in
their home in a partially decomposed state.

The alarm was raised after flies were noticed swarming out of the letterbox
at the weekend. Police discovered the pair on Saturday. A neighbour who
refused to be named said Mrs Wolf was a recluse who devoted herself to
caring for her wheelchair-bound daughter after refusing help from social
services.

It is understood Mrs Wolf, who gave her daughter round-the-clock care, died
suddenly in her bed at the house about six weeks ago.

Her 29-year-old quadriplegic daughter was discovered in the living room of
their three-bedroom £250,000 home. A post-mortem examination revealed
neither suffered any external injuries and police were not looking for
anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Another line of inquiry police were investigating, according to sources, was
whether Mrs Wolf killed her daughter before committing suicide.

Residents of the Hertfordshire village of Wheathampstead, where she had
lived for over 30 years, said she had withdrawn from village life and
treated her disabled daughter like “a baby”, driving her around in a
specially adapted van. The woman, who declined to be named, said: “She was a
recluse and never got involved in village life.

“She treated her disabled daughter like a baby. I once saw her washing her
in a child’s paddling pool in the garden. It was a bit strange but she was
clearly a very loving mother.”

Three years ago Mrs Wolf emblazoned the roof of her bungalow with a huge
“Help” sign, according to neighbours, but repeatedly refused assistance from
Hertfordshire County Council. Yesterday one neighbour said: “It was bizarre
when the banner went up and I don’t know if police or social services looked
into it.

“The trouble was Stephanie was a very private person, who could be very
dismissive and unapproachable if you tried to talk to her.” A spokesman for
the county council said: “We were aware of the family but they refused our
offer of services.

“In August 1998, an assessment of need resulted in the provision of
equipment and major adaptations to the property to provide disability
access. Following on from this, various offers of support offered by Adult
Care Services were declined. She said she was happy to be the sole carer and
wanted to be left alone.”

Hertfordshire Police said: “Two post mortems were conducted on Monday to
establish the cause of death.

“Initial results suggest that neither woman sustained any external injuries
or were victims of violence prior to their death.

“Forensic tests to establish the causes of death for both are ongoing.
Detectives believe the circumstances surrounding the two deaths are not
suspicious and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the
tragedy.”

July 31--MUMBAI -- A 42-year-old mentally ill man sat next to his parents'
bodies in their 2BHK flat in Bangur Nagar, Goregaon, for four days before
the police discovered the bodies on Friday.

When Goregaon police rang the door-bell on a second-floor flat at Nand
Bhuvan building, Jawahar Nagar, the door was opened by Sujit Nair.

What he seemed unaware of was that his parents -- Rajan Nair (80) and
Chandralekha (75) -- had died some time ago, though their bodies lay on the
floor in the living room itself.

He had assumed that they were sleeping, and not only kept tea and biscuits
next to the bodies but had even massaged their feet and applied oil to them.

The couple's only son, Sujit is reportedly suffering from acute
schizophrenia, said additional commissioner of police (north region) Ramrao
Pawar. Earlier an employee with a noted firm, Sujit reportedly developed
mental problems after suffering an accident 22 years ago and has been at
home ever since.

The police said that they reached the spot after residents of the building
informed them about a foul smell

[AI] Disabled teacher shunted to non-existent school

2010-08-04 Thread sandesh

Disabled teacher shunted to non-existent school

Shalini Umachandran | TNN

Chennai: M Krishnaveni was ecstatic when she got a promotion last month. The
disabled middle school teacher was promoted as a secondary grade teacher and
posted to Senthurai Government Higher Secondary School in Sivaganga. But, to
her horror, she found out there was no such village or school in Sivaganga.

The counselling took place on July 12 in Chennai and I was given an
order to join duty at Senthurai Government Higher Secondary School in
Sivaganga district on August 2, says Krishnaveni, who currently teaches
classes six to eight at Government Higher Secondary School in Usilampatti in
Madurai. The next day, I went to Sivaganga and the chief education officer
(CO) told me that there was no such village or school there.

In Chennai, the school department told her they needed a written note
from the Sivaganga CO saying his district had no such village or school
before they could change her appointment order. The CO refused to do so,
and I am in a fix. Everyone else who went for counselling has joined duty on
Monday, she says.

Both Perambalur and Dindigul districts have places called Senthurai, and
Krishnaveni still doesn't know where she is supposed to report for duty. I
went to Dindigul district but the CO said my appointment order said
Sivaganga district and refused to let me join, she says.

Krishnaveni, who was disabled by polio when she was a child and uses
crutches, went to work at the Usilampatti school as usual on Monday, and was
told that she could continue there only till the end of the month. The
authorities said I would have to write a letter saying I want to forego my
promotion if I want to continue at the Usilampatti school, or I have to
leave, she says. I really don't know what to do.

Krishnaveni's husband spent most of Monday at the office of the Director
of School Education trying to resolve the problem. They just told him to
wait for a while, she says.

For Krishnaveni, the promotion means a raise of Rs 1,000 and a chance to
teach classes up to X. I did my BA English and then B Ed through
correspondence so that I would be eligible for this promotion, she says. I
was so happy when I got the order, but now it has turned into a nightmare.

Officials said they were looking into the issue. We give people seven
days' joining time, so she doesn't have to worry. If there is a vacancy in
the school she is currently in, we will promote her there itself.

 whole hearted second Geetha.
Doing significantly well despite blindness, illness, Homelessness, and being
a female, surely deserves to be commended.
Hindu has done it, is Hindu's credit and not of that girl, for the newspaper
is notorious for ignoring the disabled, and their reader's editor merely
terms non coverage of UN convention on rights of disabled as merely an
omission which can be rectified in future.
S-called national newspaper of India, largely confined to south India,
sometimes does well by going out of its comfort zone.

Those of us who have never known firsthand all these deprivations in
addition to blindness may not be able to appreciate the effort of the girl,
but that's okay as this world operates primarily on a surfacical level.

Yes, myth of psychology being impossible for blind is taken unadulterated by
Hindu, that's sad.

I think this article is very relevant here as we can learn a lot from the
girl featured in it. Do remember that the girl's mother was mentally ill and
she and her mother were homeless when people from the NGO mentioned in the
article rescued them from the bus station. Coming from that background,
having started school a lot later than children with normal homes and having
to grapple with blindness, this girl's achievement is quite remarkable. How
many of us, if confronted with blindness and homelessness at the same time,
would get to where she is today? She certainly deserves to be written about.

That's correct and I tell you why. You don't have to be exceptionally
good in order to appear in Hindus article. Rather what matters is some
connections with reporters either through the college or through some
other sources. And you know, people belonging to city can easily get
such access and lately news papers have been busy in picking out such
stories. And please fokes. Mere publication of such stories are not
the indication of the real empowerment of differently abled.

I beg to differ. This is where responsible journalism makes its mark
and there are journalists on the list who can better describe it. The
point is, many so called educationally forward looking states in India
are continuing to restrict subject choices based on such biased views.
Also take note of the role of editors. They are supposed to ensure
 responsible reporting.

[AI] Regarding the Article on Kaiser

2010-08-04 Thread rambabu adikesavalu
Dear Friends,
The article on Kaiser had really provoked most of our members and we had
discussions from various dimensions. At this juncture, I thought of sharing
some details which I got to know about Kaiser.
There was an article about Kaiser in The Hindu, in June, 2008-- no idea of the
date of issue--soon after her 10th results had been out. That time the news was
brought about at the initiative of the school where she studied.
She studied in Little Flower Convent for the Blind, Chennai. That article was
much more informative.
Apart from the facts that her mother was mentally ill, and homeless, Kaiser was
originally from somewhere in U P and she knew nothing in Tamil.
In Tamilnadu, except for the CBSE schools, Tamil is compulsory unless one opts
for a different second language.
As I too studied from the same school, I am very sure that there is no Hindi or
any other language .
Just imagine, the amount of struggle this person would have undergone in
learning a new language under most difficult and traumatic conditions.
Well, she had proved that if proper opportunities are provided, nothing is
impossible and one could overcome any obstacles in life.
My hearty congradulations to Kaiser and appreciations to The Hindu for showing
interest in bringing out such news items.
With love and best wishes,
Dr. A.Rambabu

Hello anoj sir,
What you have said is right for general quota. but visually challenged
have 5 percentage relaxation in marks and special questions will be
given instead of pictorial questions. your second question is whether
age relaxation is given or not. you can appear for JRF up to 33 years,
and for lectureship without any age limit.
I hope this fulfills your requirement.

Subject: [AI] Jaws Error Message.

Hello,

I am facing a new problem today on my office pc. I am using windows xp
professional sp2 and office 10. When I am pressing the tab key in ms word,
the following error message is coming up:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\10.0\jfw.exe

OK

If I hit the ok button, Jaws stops absolutely and I have to restart
windows.
I have repaired Jaws twice, removed it completely including shared files
and

reinstalled it, but the problem still persists. Please help me with a
solution.

With best regards,
Amiyo Biswas.

Hi moderator and list members,
It is great surprising that some members are demanding crossing their
limits.
As far concerned to so called email of particular person, the display name
is abcd and by any unknown reason (like many list menbers) concerned
member has forgotten to write his / her name. I don't understand, how a or
some members publicly ask to moderator for removing that member for above
said reason? If a or some members have some problem regarding particular
member, they should write personally to moderator.
Beside of it, every member has equal right to choose any display name,
although it should be compulsary for every member to write her / his name in
end of Email.
Finally, we should not forget this fact that some of us may be very new in
this group and also in computer line. We should encourage them to express
their views by removing their mistakes whether those related to writing or
any other.

Subject: Instructions for using landmarks with OVI maps

Hello all,

I have been following this thread for some time and I would like to share with
you how I use Nokia Maps. If you find that I am stating the obvious, then
please stop reading.

I have a Nokia N86, so the following all applies to this model.

In the applications list, there is an application called 'Landmarks'. I start
from here. Having opened 'Landmarks', in the options menu, there is an item
called 'new landmark,. It has a submenu containing 3 things: current position,
select from map and enter manually. You can enter your current position simply
by pressing the selector key here and giving your current position a name. But
a second, really useful thing you can do is to enter a position manually. When
you select 'enter manually', you are presented with a dialogue box where you
can enter various parameters. If you happen to know the postcode (or zip code)
of the place you want to travel to, you're away.

You can just enter this into the appropriate field, then give the landmark a
name (because this is required), and then press 'done' with the right soft key.
You then have that landmark in your landmarks list, but you haven't yet
selected it from the map. Now make sure that you are on the landmark in the
landmarks list and press left soft key to open the options menu again. This
time select 'show on map'. This opens Nokia Maps. The first thing that the
phone will say is that Bluetooth is switched off and ask if you want to switch
it on. I select 'no' here as I use the phone's internal GPS receiver.

The postcode you have entered for the landmark will now be spoken. Press the
selector key and Nokia Maps will search for it. If you have searched on a
postcode and it is successfully been found, there should only be one result.

If you have searched on something else, there may be a list of results to
choose from. Press the selector key on the result you want and you will find an
accessible menu of 'walk to', 'drive to', 'show details' 'save place'

'add to route' and 'send'. At this point, if you select 'walk to' or 'drive
to', you will get voice instructions from your present position to your
selected destination, but you will have to go through the above process every
time you want to make that journey again. So what I do is, having located my
destination on the map, I choose 'save place' so that my landmark will now be
saved with the map co-ordinates included in it. When you press the selector key
on 'save place', the phone will say 'save as' and it may come up with a name
based on what came up in the search. If I'm happy with this, I save the
landmark with that name. Otherwise I give it a more meaningful name of my own,
but always different from the name I gave to the original landmark. I then back
out of Nokia Maps by pressing soft key 2 for as many times as necessary until
the phone says 'landmarks'. I delete the original landmark as this did not
contain the map co-ordinates and retain the one which I had searched for on the
map and saved. This way, when I want to use the landmark again, all I have to
do is find it on the list of landmarks, select 'show on map' from the options
menu, press select on it (after answering the question about Bluetooth) and
then press the select key again to get to the menu for 'walk to', 'drive to',
Etc.

That all sounds very complicated when I write it down, but try playing with it
and, hopefully, you will find it works quite well.

Best wishes,

Brian.

Hi,

But I think that if I go to some place or in a group of people or joine a
public forum, it is very inethical to not introduce myself with my propper
name. Choosing a display name of one's own chois is a different matter
though, not writing original name in any of the emails including very first
mail sent to the group doesn't give a good impression about the sender. And,
this won't be wise to say that this person doesn't know these things.
Moreover, his english skills don't look so poor that he doesn't understand
the disscussion going on on this topic, because if he is subscribed to this
group and is able to post to the list then he also might be receiving all
these mails. So, why doesn't he answer all this on his own?

2010-08-04 Thread Satguru Rathi
Hi,

I don't understand the reason of contacting the Moderator privately when we
all are receiving these nasty looking mails in our inboxes. Why he or she is
hiding his identity, has he done some crime, or has he been expelled from
the group before? I don't find any other reason of not writing his name.

Hello,
I am also agree to you for the same concerns. But, this is not ground for
expulsion or restricted to any person from any group.
Further, if any person has any greivance from any member, he / she should
contact to moderator personally, not publicly.

Rakesh.
