[AI] Light-Powered Bionic Eye Invented to Help Restore Sight

Light Powered bionic eye Invented To Help Restore Sight.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-18061174?print=true

Light-powered bionic eye invented to help restore sight

By James GallagherHealth and science reporter, BBC News

A retinal implant - or bionic eye - which is powered by light has been invented
by scientists at Stanford University in California.

Implants currently used in patients need to be powered by a battery.

The new device,
described in the journal Nature Photonics,
uses a special pair of glasses to beam near infrared light into the eye.

This powers the implant and sends the information which could help a patient
see.

Diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinal pigmentosa result
in the death of cells which can detect light in the eye.

Eventually this leads to blindness.

Wiring eliminated

Retinal implants stimulate the nerves in the back of the eye, which has helped
some patients to see.

Early results of a trial in the UK mean two men have gone from being totally
blind
to being able to perceive light
 and even some shapes.

However, as well as a fitting a chip behind the retina, a battery needs to be
fitted behind the ear and a cable needs to join the two together.

The Stanford researchers say their method could be a step forward by
eliminating the need for complex electronics and wiring.

A retinal implant, which works in a similar way to a solar panel, is fitted in
the back of the eye.

A pair of glasses fitted with a video camera records what is happening before a
patient's eyes and fires beams of near infrared light on to the retinal
chip.

The creates an electrical signal which is passed on to nerves.

Natural light is 1,000 times too weak to power the implant.

The researchers said: Because the photovoltaic implant is thin and wireless,
the surgical procedure is much simpler than in other retinal prosthetic
approaches.

Such a fully integrated wireless implant promises the restoration of useful
vision to patients blinded by degenerative retinal diseases.

The implant has not been tested in people, but has been shown to work in rats.

Fully touch screen phone is advisable for totally blind person?
Or one should strictly go with QWERTY keypad.
Though many friends are using touch screen devices, but as I suppose
it’s tough to handle the phone competently without physical keyboard.
I may be wrong, that’s why I am in need of your suggestions.

 Hi Shreyas,

I use an iPhone. iPhone and iPad are exactly the same except that iPad
 does
not have the phone features. Rest is exactly same since both run same
 Operating System.

In terms of accessibility, iPhone is really good, completely built in
accessibility, you can purchase it and start using it right away!

The VoiceOver is the inbuilt screen reader of Apple and is available in

The only issue i have is that my typing speed is relatively slower on

 Dear Group mates.
Here is a good news for you..

Schogini launches talking Chess Board App for visually challenged

Saturday, 12 May 2012 20:25 Kerala IT News

Tvm: Technopark, Trivandrum based mobile application developer
company, Schogini Systems has launched a talking Chess Board and a
talking Chess App for visually challenged. In their efforts to empower
the blind, the company has also launched applications like Coloring
App and Seeing Apps for Android, iOS and Windows Phone. Schogini also
announced the appointment of Mohammed Salih, a blind by birth, as
their Brand Ambassador - Intelligent Interfaces’.
eir ‘Brand Ambassador - Intelligent Interfaces’.

Interacting with the media, N Sree Prakash, Managing Director,
 Schogini Systems said,
“We realised that there is an absence of computer games for the
visually challenged and this prompted us to launch the speaking
version of the chess game and other apps which will help them. We are
probably the first IT company in Kerala to employ a blind person. By
the way, the talking chess game can be played by any person.”

In his role as the brand ambassador, Salih would take intelligent
gaming strategies to teens and youngsters who are reading less and
spending more time in front of a computer or on mobile phones and are
fast turning addicts to dumb and blood-thirsty games. The idea is to
lure them back through technology by making brain-engaging strategy
games for them rather than war strategy games.

Ram Kamal, Director, Chakshumathi, an empowerment and assertive
technology centre for blind, said, “Schogini has taken a bold and
unique initiative by employing Salih and launching such apps. This
should encourage more IT companies to employ visually challenged
persons and also develop applications that will empower them. There
are many visually challenged persons who are highly skilled and
trained in IT but they are not getting placements.”

Schogini Systems is based at the Leela Infopark in Technopark campus.
The company’s expertise is in Physics, 2D, Game Centre / Multi-Player
based Apps for iOS, Android and Windows Phone platforms. Schogini
Systems is ISO 9001-2008 Certified for Software Development and
 Customer support.

[AI] Knowledge Sharing: 6 Ways to Make Internet Explorer 8 Run much faster

2012-05-15 Thread Mujtaba Merchant
Internet Explorer 8 is by far the most reasonable and secured browser
Microsoft ever produced which is also comes with Windows 7.IE8 is the mostly
used browser also now a days despite Firefox and Chrome giving competition
to Microsoft's browser. If you are using IE8 here are some tips and tweaks
for IE8 to make it run faster than before.

1.Never set MSN website as IE8's homepage

This will be experienced by lot of users who leave MSN as homepage after
installing IE8 in their computers.Set the homepage to blank which loads
Internet Explorer much faster.

2.Disable unnecessary add-ons by clicking ToolsManage Add-ons.These
add-ons also can slow down IE8's performance.

3.Make sure you enabled prevent programs from suggesting changes to my
default search provider , from security point of view this will be important
as some toolbars install without your consent and changes default search
provider.

4.Disable unnecessary accelerators :By default when IE8 installed some
accelerators enabled by it which you can disable you no longer need by
selecting ToolsManage Add-onsAccelerators.

5.Set IE8 to delete browsing history after closing.

For this ToolsInternet optionsGeneralBrowsing History select delete
browsing history on exit.

6.Keep IE temporary files and internet files settings to default

From ToolsInternet optionsGeneralBrowsing Historysettings make sure IE
checks for newer version of pages set to automatically , set disk space to
store temporary internet files should be kept 50 MB or above to load your
most often websites load faster.

If you know any other tips to improve IE8 performance share them!

Friends,
Fully touch screen phone is advisable for totally blind person?
Or one should strictly go with QWERTY keypad.
Though many friends are using touch screen devices, but as I suppose
it’s tough to handle the phone competently without physical keyboard.
I may be wrong, that’s why I am in need of your suggestions.

Subject: Re: [AI] How to use data validation and filtering options in
Excel2007 file

 About Data Validation:

It helps you validate data at the time of input. Suppose you have a column
that records that Rate of a product and the minimum rate is 50 and maximum
is 200. You can discard all inputs that are non numeric or numeric values
below 50 and above 200 as follows.

 1. Select the cells that you want to validate data entry.
 2. Click Data menu and select Validation from the menu. Alternatively
 ALT+D
followed by L. The Data Validation dialog opens with Settings tab by
 default.
 3. Specify the below values in the dialog box:
 Allow: Whole Number
 Data: Between
 Minimum: 50
 Maximum: 200
 4. Activate the OK button.
 5. Now when your cursor is on one of the selected cells, JAWS would
 indicate
that is it a whole number input between 50 and 200. Try entering an
 invalid
value in it and see how Microsoft Excel behaves.

You can check out the other options to restrict input in a cell by
 exploring
various options in the Allow combo box. You can select List in this combo
box and specify the list of items in the Source edit box. For example to
 specify months:

 1. Select List in the Allow combo box.
 2. Specify comma separated list of months in the Source edit box as shown
 below:

 January, February, March, April

The cells would contain a combo box with the list of specified items.

 About Data Filtering:

Data Filtering helps you hide irrelevant data from the current view. This
 is
useful when you have a large amount of data and want to view data that
 meets
specific criteria. Microsoft Excel provides two options for filtering:

AutoFilter - This option places a combo box on top of each column with
values in that column. Selecting a specific value in this combo box hides
rows that do not match the selected value in that column. In other words,
uncheck values that you wish to hide from the current view. You can apply
AutoFilter by selecting Data menu Filter AutoFilter. Alternatively,
 ALT+D followed by F F.
Advanced Filter - This option comes to play when you have a complex
 criteria
like all products costing 500 and above with a total sales volume of
 300
and above. Select Data menu Filter Advanced Filter or press ALT+D
followed by F A. The Advanced Filter dialog box asks for the following
 options:

List Range: This is the source data to filter For example, $A$1:$P$201.
Criteria Range: This specifies the range of cells where you have entered
 the
 filter criteria. For example $q$1:$r$2.

Here are the steps to apply an advanced filter to list all products that
cost 500 or more with a sales volume of 300 and above.

 1. Select the list range for example, $A$1:$J$1000.
 2. Place the cursor in any cell other than the above range. I choose K1
 for
now. Enter values in cells as shown below:
 K1 Cost
 K2 =500
 L1 Sales
 L2 =300

 3. Select Data menu Filter Advanced Filter. Alternatively, ALT+D
 followed by F A.
 4. Specify the following list and criteria ranges in the Advanced Filter
 dialog box:
 List Range $1$1:$J$1000
 Criteria Range $K$1:$L$2

 5. Activate the OK button.

Your data would display only records that match the criteria specified in
the cell range K1:L2. If you change any criteria then you need to apply
 the
filter once again. The data would not auto refresh.

About password protecting and sending a file through email:

You can apply a password in the Save As dialog box as outlined below:

 1. Open the File that needs be password protected.
 2. Open the Save As dialog box. This dialog box opens when you save a new
file or select Save As from the File menu.
 3. Press ALT+L to open the Tools menu within the dialog box and select
 General Options from the menu.
 4. Specify the password to open or password to modify or both in the
resulting dialog box and activate the OK button. Note that you need to
 type
any password twice in the dialog

 Friends,
Fully touch screen phone is advisable for totally blind person?
Or one should strictly go with QWERTY keypad.
Though many friends are using touch screen devices, but as I suppose
it’s tough to handle the phone competently without physical keyboard.
I may be wrong, that’s why I am in need of your suggestions.

The only issue i have is that my typing speed is relatively slower on

 Dear All,
For banking exams, One of the scribe eligibilities that scribe should
not have more than 60% in his/her academic qualification. IBPS has
removed this criteria but what about coming SBI clerical exam?
Did SBI also has removed these criteria?
Please clarify this at the earliest.
 Thanks in advance!

Re: [AI] Query about scribe eligibility in coming SBI Clerical exam

2012-05-15 Thread Satguru
Hi Ajay,

Normally, the eligibility criteria for a writer is that he/she should be one
grade junior than the stipulated criteria and not from the candidate.
Suppose, if for SBI exam, the eligibility criteria is 12th only, and your
sister is doing her post graduation, she can't take a scribe who is under
graduate but would take one who is in class 11th.

Re: [AI] Query about scribe eligibility in coming SBI Clerical exam

2012-05-15 Thread Satguru
Hi Ajay,

Bit of correction: if the eligibility criteria is 12th pass, the person
studying in class 12th can also write the exam. The fact is, the person
should be below the stipulated criteria.
