Re: [AI] Knowledge sharing: Where and How to use Alternate Text WCAG 2.0
Hi Swarna, Certainly, something can be done for existing web pages too; developer needs to fix the problem. It's like adding a little piece of additional code. Here is an example: Bad example: img src=http://something.com/picture.jpg; Good example: img src=http://something.com/picture.jpg; alt=Image description If image is used for decorative / spacer purpose, then right thing to do is providing null alt attribute. On 8/23/12, Srinivasu Chakravarthula li...@srinivasu.org wrote: Taken from a blog post Alt text (or text alternatives) are words that show up in place of an image, when that image can’t be loaded. Images are sometimes turned off by users with slow internet connections and blind users often use screen reader software that reads the alt text aloud when it reaches the image. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 demand alt text for images in most cases. The text is meant as a replacement for the image – not in addition to it. This means the text should describe the image and give the same information as the image would if seen. This isn’t always easy and people don’t always agree on what the ‘same’ information is. The best bet is to be honest with yourself – what does the picture convey? If the image is your company logo, your company name is a good bet. If the image is of text, replicate the text exactly. For all other images, describe the image helpfully and succinctly – we don’t need to know it’s a picture of 17,387 trees if ‘forest’ would do. Whatever you do, don’t see alt text as a great resource for keyword stuffing. Adding out-of-context keywords as alt text is terrible for accessibility, does not meet WCAG 2.0 guidelines and has minimal to no search engine optimisation benefits. What to do - Add alt text to all of your images - Add a name to all of your buttons (such as ‘Search’ or ‘Submit’) How to do it If you’re using a good quality content management system, you will be able to add alt text with very little effort. For example, WordPress allows you to edit the alt text of all images that you insert into posts and pages. If you’ve got something a little more bespoke, here is some information and code that will help: An image on a website has two essential elements, its source and its alternative. The source is the location of the image and the alternative is what I’ve just been talking about. ? http://www.wuhcag.com/alt-text/?goback=.gde_53511_member_150908160# 1 img src=filename.jpg alt=insert alt text / Here’s how a form might look like with names added. ? http://www.wuhcag.com/alt-text/?goback=.gde_53511_member_150908160# 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 form label for=option1Option One/label input id=option1 type=radio name=type / /br label for=option2Option Two,/label input id=option2 type=radio name=type / /form Auditing alt text Alt text is relatively simple to audit and easy to fix, making this a quick-win WCAG 2.0 guideline. One of the best ways is to add the WAVE toolbar http://wave.webaim.org/toolbar/ to Firefox and check a page. As most sites have a standard template, you can catch your biggest issues with one sweep. Banners, sidebar images and footers only need fixing once to improve every page on your site. After that, you’ll need to do page-by-page checking. If you want a more in-depth and hands-off solution, you can request an accessibility audit http://www.wuhcag.com/contact/ of your whole website for alt text and other issues. One more thing [image: Forest] Photo credit http://www.flickr.com/photos/view_camper/3179689934/ There are a few types of image that don’t need alt text: spacers, icons, purely decorative, tests and CAPTCHA images. Re: [AI] : doubt in JAWS settings
Select a proofreading scheme in the scheme selection dialogue box. I, however, feel uneasy listening to a diferent voice reading the odd text like a bad prompter. I normally use the jaws keystroke insert+f to check the formatting attributes. You have to guess that there is a formatting feature applied, of course. For selecting some text, use the f8 key. It will switch on the extended selection mode. Now you can use the arrow keys to select the text. When you are satisfied with the selection, execute the copy or cut command, then press f8 again to switch off the extended selection mode. Hope, this helps. Re: [AI] Google chrome and internet explorer
google chroam is not fully accesible with jaws. however, please make the following settings in your internet explorer, hope this will help: Internet Explorer If you want to use the Internet Explorer toolbar, you should include text labels on the buttons. To do this go to the Toolbars submenu under the View menu and choose customize and select Text Labels. There are several advanced options that should also be changed. Open the Internet Options dialog under the Tools menu and go to the Advanced page. Under The Accessibility Section, make sure the following are checked: · Move system caret with focus/selection changes. · Always expand all text for images . Under the Browsing section, make sure the following are not checked: · Show channel bar at startup. · Show friendly URLs. · Use smooth scrolling. · Enable page transitions. In the Accessibility dialog, make sure Ignore Colors Specified On Web Pages is checked. This dialog opens when you press the Accessibility button in the General page of the Internet Options dialog. - Original Message - From: siddhi desai siddhi.desa...@gmail.com To: accessindia accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, August 27, 2012 2:45 PM Subject: [AI] Google chrome and internet explorer Hi guys, I dont know why but at my system, i use IE 8 still it crashes many times and gives me message like Internet explorer has stopped working restart the programme or check online or close the programme Hence, I switch to google chrome. [AI] new doubt in excel
hai friends, as subject says, i have a doubt in excel in sorting. in my bank, in chennai zone, there are 86 branches. we have to prepare a report showing top5 performers in deposits advances etc. if we sort manually, it will happen. but among 86 branches, there are divisions like new branches, AGM branches etc which i should not disturb the order. so i have to create a separate list showing top5 performers with maximum number. so kindly anybody suggest me how to identify top5 big numbers using formulas? i know we can use max function for getting topmost number. but i want second third fourth and fifth also. if we use rank function, it will return the actual rank only not the actual number or related amount. so please suggest me a good way. regards. aravind. Re: [AI] new doubt in excel
Use the Large() function of Excel. For example, the below formula returns the 3rd largest number in the cell range A1:A10. =LARGE(A1:A10, 3) To get the 4th largest value in the cell range B1:B100, type the below formula: =LARGE(B1:B100, 4) The Small() function returns the specified smallest number in the given array. For example, the below formula returns the 7th smallest value in the range P201:P500. =SMALL(P201:P500, 7) Let me know if this helps or if you need more inputs. Re: [AI] doubt in JAWS settings
Hi, You can use JAWS scheme. Press Ins+Alt+S and select a required scheme based on your requirement. Hope this will help. How a VI can do it? What I mean is, We can also bold the paragraph. But, how to identify the difference between normal paragraph and bolded paragraph? How to identify the difference between normal text and itlized text? Is it possible to make any settings in JAWS? Generally, if we activate JAWS cursor, there will be a difference in the JAWS speech. In the same way, if we bold the paragraph, is it possible to change the pitch of JAWS, so that, we can identify the difference between the normal paragraph and bolded paragraph? I think I explained my doubt clearly. So, folks, please tell me how to change JAWS settings. My second doubt is, How to identify superscript? Suppose if I type, 1st rank, St will be on the top. I mean we will use of option of superscript. But, JAWS is not making any difference between normal text and the text for which I applied the option of superscript. So, how to know that there is superscript for a text? I think everyone got my point. I am using JAWS 13. So, tell me how to make changes in JAWS settings? Your help is highly appreciable. Because I am pretty sure that in past Google has worked on accessibility for Chrome, and it has then started working with Jaws 13 and NVDA 2011. When I myself tried superficially just to see that it's working, the menus and all was working fine, there was just a single thing which I disliked that it had that pain sort of feature, so from address and other navigation for anyone to go to web content, one had to press F6 and sometimes with Jaws one had to refresh the screen using Ins+esc. But rest of the things (at least the ones which I use) were fine. In fact now after reading your discussion I just googled and found this keyboard shortcuts page, which I will hardly ever read :) So, you may like to check: http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=enanswer=157179 Hope that solves the concern. -- Amar Jain.
