I totally agree with Pranav sir and srinivasu sir. now a days, all most all the things can be sorted out if you are pyaneer in using your assistive technology. I have seen many people specially the basic screan reader users who afraid too much even while changing a simple setting in their computer/ mobile. This fear needs much attention. offcourse, there are cirtain type of careers option which are not accessible for a visually impaired person. that is why a visually impaired person should pay special attention towards his expected job asignment before planning his future. But if our basics are good then, we can perform at least that job which can be made accessible. Even if people don't get job because of poor communication skills or computer skills then, they cunsidder their impairment as the root cause of rejection. Pranav Sir, I have been using Word and Outlook in Office 2013, and I can say that the normal ribbon interface is accessible, however when you have to do something inside dialogues, there at some places accessibility is not as good as it should be. For example, inside the page setup, you don't hear the tab names. Same is the case with outlook, if you have to arrange columns etc, there is a bit of accessibility issue. Over all, it is good to use office 2013. Not experimented with Powerpoint and excel. A tip: if you find office 2013 sluggish or at times hanging a lot, then disable hardware acceleration from options advance for smooth usability. Applicable to old systems. Regards -- Amar Jain. Re: [AI] A site for bringing vi job seekers and employers together!
Dear members, We have had a good discussion so far on this subject, there are a few words that might add a little further meaning to the subject. Assistance, collaboration, dedication, goal setting, effort, will power, knowledge, understanding, encouragement, direction, focus, policies, attitude, and the list can go on. Education leads to employment, one can use some of the above words in the current context. Please do not consider any of this mail harshly, they are to be taken in a light vein. One has to find good education which is to be gathered with lot of analysis and with focus in mind and thoughts, and with enough dedication. Opportunities are difficult to come by, I feel all of us speak n work in some direction to be of help to the whole VI family but I personally feel we need an umbrella for this family. Lot of work for breaking barriers, accessibility, advocacy, employment, happen around us we can name many individuals n organisations working so we can't deny that there is no effort. There may be something missing. We seek reservations from government in jobs, in my personal understanding I feel that there is a need to identify the jobs that can be done. We need to also find solutions n paths to our own problems. I would like to give a small example, in the weeks after the 26/11 attacks, the law enforcing agencies at a higher level asked all the sub committees to give a report on what they need for better infrastructure, so all the committees sent the replies, like advance surveillance systems, tracking devices, bullet proof jackets and a whole list if gadgets, having studied them the higher level authorities were upset and a hard message was sent back which read don't just ask for resources also suggest from where we get them and other related stuff. What I mean is we need to collaborate all that we have together with self evaluation, we have someone offering computer education, honestly many institutions have shortage of good computer instructors, or I may say no instructors, elementary, secondary education and higher education needs self evaluation, I mean we can not say that the education systems is such and it is difficult to change the current system or so or whatever, however it's my personal experience that there needs to be a change in this scene. Often we see that any discussion on computer programming related queries on the list are seldom answered. Harnessing the richness of available technology sometimes is un explored, I mean that workaround is possible but practically they aren't explored. Having written all of the above if there is thought in the readers mind, if I have a vivid understanding of some situations then why am I just saying or say writing the problem areas, I shall want to also write that whatever I can do in my capacity along with my SWOT I shall be doing. I m an ordinary individual with strengths and weaknesses. Like it is applicable to one and all when strengths overpower weaknesses solutions come in. So as one amongst you waiting for the balance to be achieved. Hi Apoorve sir, Even I had my study material in PDF format. though the theoritical part was accessible but, mathematical data was like a nightmare. I tried a lot to make it more accessible by converting to math ml or any other known format. but nothing worked for me. because there was not any standard equation editor which was used to produce that document. the formats got broken when we tried to convert that document in HTML. additionally, the documents had some flowers/ shaides to make them more atractive. So find reader and infty reader were detecting them as graphics and the quality became worst for reading. Re: [AI] Sambhavana Organization’s Statement Condemning the Undemocratic, Bullying and Anti-Disabled Attitude of Delhi University Authorities
This attitude is obnoxious and should be condemned in the strictest words. WE also request the CCPD to intervene in this issue and restore the dignity of the challenged. What ever the issues, the DU should discuss and find an amicable solution and not bully the students. regards - Original Message - From: Ajay Arora ajayaror...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, January 14, 2013 10:23 AM Subject: [AI] Sambhavana Organization’s Statement Condemning the Undemocratic, Bullying and Anti-Disabled Attitude of Delhi University Authorities Ref.Sam.2013/104 Dated: 12/01/2013 Subject: Sambhavana Organization’s Statement Condemning the Undemocratic, Bullying and Anti-Disabled Attitude of Delhi University Authorities At the call of Sambhavana Organization, and more importantly, owing to their own grievances, about 250 disabled students and teachers had assembled on last Tuesday (8th January 2013) outside the office of Delhi University Vice Chancellor in order to seek two assurances from him. First, we wanted him to constitute an Empowered Committee for drafting a time-bound action plan for the resolution of issues mentioned in our comprehensive representation already submitted in his office. Most of these issues have been raised many times from different platforms, but no concrete steps have been taken up by the University to address these pressing concerns. Second, we wanted the University to announce a date on which it would organize a ‘disability summit’ where disabled persons would get an opportunity for directly sharing their grievances with the Empowered Committee so that it can propose a well-formulated time-bound action plan. Here, it may also be noted that Sambhavana Organization had undertaken the task of organizing many rounds of consultative discussions with disabled students, teachers and non-teaching employees of the University for preparing a comprehensive representation at the behest of DU Vice Chancellor himself. However, when we prepared and submitted the representation to Vice Chancellor and requested him to resolve the issues and to give us time for discussing these matters with him, he did not do so despite many reminders. Finding no other way, disabled students and teachers decided to assemble on 8th January outside the office of Delhi University Vice Chancellor. When they received no assurance despite five hours of Dharna, they carried out a march from Vice Chancellor’s office to Arts Faculty with the resolve to intensify the struggle if DU pays no heed to their genuine demands. Even then, the stonehearted authorities did not make any promise. We have not received any communication from University authorities though many days have elapsed after the peaceful democratic protests. It is also worth noting that owing to this insensitive and indifferent attitude of the University authorities, disabled students were compelled to assert their voice in the form of protest/agitations about a year ago as well. Many promises were made thereafter, but none was fulfilled. The situation is worst this time, because University has not only failed to make any promise, but it is threatening those students who participated in the 8th January protest demonstrations. The X Proctor, who is also the Coordinator of Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC), the Deputy Proctor, and the Deputy Dean who is also serving as the OSD in EOC are intimidating the students on either phone or whenever they visit the DU NTPC Resource Center. The students are being told that the University has prepared the video recording of the demonstrations; and the University will not consider the names of those students who participated in the demonstration for any benefit/facilities vis-à-vis other students. We have been also told that while intimidating the students, they are using derogatory and anti-disabled language. We strictly condemn this attitude of Delhi University authorities. We request them to apply their mind for resolving the genuine issues disabled are fighting for, instead of threatening the students, which would further compel us to intensify the struggle. Both, are demands as well as our protest demonstrations are our democratic, legal and constitutional rights. University should respect these rights. It should enable us to exercise and enjoy these rights, instead of crushing them through intimidation and harassment. If Delhi University fails to positively respond and address the immediate issues mentioned above, we will be compelled to intensify the struggle through a hunger strike on Friday (18/01/2013) in DU and a march to MHRD on Friday (8th February 2013). We would, however, like to sincerely endeavor to peacefully avert the present crisis. Therefore, we are trying to seek the intervention of Prime Minister, UPA Chair Person, Union Minister for HRD, Chairman–UGC and Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of India for the resolution of our issues through their

Thanks Ajay for sharing all this. Ramakrishnanji, we have approached CCPD. Lets see how do they intervene. In this regard, see the following link for coverage in Deccan Herald; and join the struggle. http://www.deccanherald.com/content/305107/students-special-needs-face-harassment.html ‘Students with special needs face harassment for showing dissent’ New Delhi, Jan 13, 2103, DHNS Delhi University’s teachers’ forum Sambhavana, working for the rights of students with special needs, said students who participated in the protest held on January 8 are being harassed and intimidated. Students with special needs have been demanding better facilities in the varsity. They are also constantly complaining about no action being taken on the demands raised by them time and again. “The ex-proctor, who is also the coordinator of the Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC), the deputy proctor, and the deputy dean, who is also serving as the officer on special duty in EOC, are intimidating students on either over the phone or whenever they visit the centre dedicated for disabled students,” said Sambhavana member Nikhil Jain. Several students who participated in the protest complained that officials are threatening to exclude them from physically handicapped category benefits and facilities provided by the university. “We are being told that because the protest was video recorded, the officials know who all participated. The intimidation is often derogatory. This, coming from officials holding posts is in bad taste,” said a visually challenged student. “When did demanding equal and basic rights become incorrect?” A senior official said they have not yet received any complaint regarding the same. The forum members said no communication has taken place regarding the demands. As an immediate demand, the protesters wanted the vice chancellor to form an empowered committee for drafting a time-bound action plan for resolution of issues. “Most of these issues have been raised many times from different platforms, but no concrete steps have been taken by the university to address these pressing concerns,” said Jain. The second demand was that the university should announce a date on which it would organise a ‘disability summit’, where disabled persons would get an opportunity for directly sharing their grievances with the empowered committee. “This can help propose a well-formulated time-bound action plan,” added Jain. The forum members, after consultations with students and non-teaching members, have decided that if the varsity fails to respond and address the immediate demands, then they will be compelled to intensify their struggle through a hunger strike on Friday. “A march is also planned to the union human resource development ministry on February 8. We are also trying to seek the intervention of the Prime Minister, UPA chairperson, union HRD minister, University Grants Commission chairperson and the chief commissioner for persons with disabilities, for resolution of our issues,” said Jain. Re: [AI] A site for bringing vi job seekers and employers together
You are right mane thing is that in blind schools there is no quality education after completed 10 class also they dont no how to behave they look like they dont have basic education we are young indians we have to work on it. That is why no one hiring but one think I want to say with you guys that Enable-India doing great job I am visually impaired I had training at enable India.they only placed me now I am working . On 1/15/13, ss sarfudeen sssarfud...@gmail.com wrote: Dear all, The quality of education imparted at the blind schools may fall short of the required skills and practical training in some cases. But, undoubtedly, vision impaired students do go beyond their formal education to pursue courses at Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctorate levels these days and I am sure you all will agree with me on this. The fact is that there are a number of deserving candidates who even after gaining the skills and training required by the industry, do not attain employment. What we need to understand here is that it is not the mindsets of visually challenged students alone that need to be changed, but that of the respective institutions and employers who are highly discriminative towards them. Let me draw your attention to a very serious point. Some of us here on the list must be aware of the job portal called jobability launched for people with disabilities. This is an initiative taken by Leonard Cheshire Disability - South Asia, supported by Accenture. The irony is that the supporting organisation Accenture does not hire people with visual impairments simply because of their attitudinal barriers. Please note that this is not my personal statement. I was told this by a person working for the Leonard Cheshire Disability Home in the Chennai location and he also added that they find it very difficult to place people with vision impairment in any organisation. At this juncture, I would like to ask one serious question to you all. Kindly enlighten me as to how many NGOs working in the area of disability have employed people with vision impairment in particular and also continue to do so, and if so, in what numbers? We can't keep talking about this without the actual facts and figures. It is not only our educational institutions that need to be blamed for not imparting high quality of education with the necessary employability skills and training for these students. A lot more needs to be done by the so-called organisations working for the vision impaired segment by undertaking rigorous lobbying efforts and advocacy programs towards sensitizing the society at large in the areas of reducing social barriers, education, training, empowerment, employment, equity in pay, recognition and so on. As one of the members Ajay pointed out, corrective and immediate action needs to be taken by channelising our efforts consistently in the right direction so as to bring forth the desired change. @Avichal, The vijob site is fine to my knowledge, as far as accessibility is concerned. But I found that the section on Job Lists does not contain any job listing. So, can you please explain the purpose of this section? In addition, it would be better to include a separate section on Clients/Employers providing the list of employers who are registered on this site, just like the section on the list of job seekers.
