Hello sir,
According to me, the first goal should be to empower a common man
about assistive technology.
Just turn your eye towards any movie, radio program or any other mode
of entertainment, A visually impaired person is always shown either
with his cane or brail typewriter and yes, music as well.
I am sure that even till now, not every educated person living even in
the so-called metro cities of india is aware about assistive
technologies.
I am not discouraging either brail or music or cane but just as we see
sighted people working on their laptops, mobiles, or in their offices.
Visually impaired person should also be portrayed like them.
we want an india where no visually impaired person has to aware every
buddy about his capabilities. I was thrilled to see a presentation on
assistive devices in a show called mobiles and gadgets in the episode
which was broadcasted on 13 august 2012 on z business. Unfortunately,
I didn't find any youtube link for the same. We need many of them in
near future in order to facilitate an inclusive society.
regards

[AI] Eyeway TV Serial!

2013-02-14 Thread George Abraham
Dear Friends!

We are happy to share with you that we are working on a 13 part TV serial
for nationwide telecast. The serial aims to create awareness and sensitise
the masses on the potential and the possibilities with life with
blindness. The serial will cover various themes like education, parenting,
employment, law, technology, art and culture, sports and recreation and so
on. The idea is to establish that we the blind persons are as human as
anyone else and can be part of the mainstream National life, if we are seen
as potential resources for the country and are invested in.

We need to move away from being people who should be provided for and
looked after to people who can contribute to the National Economy. Parents,
the Society and the Nation must have expectations of us and hence must
provide us with quality opportunities to evolve as Indian citizens.

We would like to collaborate with Access India as a source to generate
content. I have spoken to the moderator and he believes that this would be
a meaningful partnership.

Access India has over 2000 members from across India and the possibilities
of coming up with interesting case stories, innovations, experiences and so
on are immense. I will send out separate Emails for each of the 13 themes.

How do you guys feel about the venture?

[AI] Google Now: The future of big data and Android's game-changer

2013-02-14 Thread Prashant Ranjan Verma
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/hiner/google-now-the-future-of-big-data-and
-androids-game-changer/10903?tag=nl.e101

&s_cid=e101&ttag=e101

Google Now: The future of big data and Android's game-changer

Takeaway: While Google Now raises plenty of privacy hackles, it's also a
stunningly useful example of the power of big data and a major advantage for
Android.

Android's new Google Now widget

This week Google released its latest update to Google Now
on Android, including a handy new homescreen
widget and a bunch of new options that make the predictive search tool more
tuned into your interests than ever. If you want to see the future of what
big data and predictive analytics are going to be able to do, then Google
Now offers an increasingly powerful glimpse.

I first brushed into Google Now last fall when I was testing the Nexus 7
tablet, one of the first devices to get the Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" release
that debuted Google Now. On the Nexus 7, Google Now was either enabled by
default or I turned it on accidentally, so I was surprised when all of the
sudden it started sending me unprompted alerts about the weather and stocks
and the status of packages I had ordered.

While at first I was oddly curious and slightly miffed that Google was
digging into my search history and email when I hadn't explicitly given it
permission to do so, I got over that feeling pretty quickly once I realized
the value I was getting out of Google Now. It didn't take me long to think,
"I want this on my phone so that I have access to it all the time."

Fortunately, I didn't have to wait long. In October, Samsung released
Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" for the Galaxy S3
(i9300 unlocked international version) that I had recently started using as
my business phone. Once Google Now was on a device that I was using every
day, I quickly discovered even more things that it could do. The latest
update to Google Now this week has only upped the ante.

Google Now's usefulness

Here are what I found to be some of the most practical and interesting
things that Google Now does:

* Driving and traffic alerts - It doesn't take long for Google Now to
figure out your home location and your work location and the times you
typically leave to go to work and leave to go home. Then, it prompts you
about half an hour before you leave to let you know the approximate drive
time based on current traffic conditions.
* Meeting alerts - If you use Google Calendar with Gmail or Google
Apps, Google Now will add your meetings notices to its alerts. That's not a
huge deal since the Android Calendar app can already alert you of meetings.
However, if you have location information entered for your meetings then it
will alert you, for example, 38 minutes before the meeting to tell you that
you need to leave now in order to make it to the meeting on time based on
current traffic conditions.
* Flight alerts - If you have flight confirmations in your email,
Google Now automatically grabs the information and then sends you alerts and
updates on those flights, including digital boarding passes
  for a few airlines.
* Practical travel info - When I was traveling to the UK and Italy
last fall, Google Now automatically prompted me with time zone, currency,
and translation information.
* Shipped package alerts - Google Now recognizes shipping notices in
your email and turns them into glanceable alerts.
* Sports alerts - You can tell Google Now your favorite sports teams
and it will alert you when your teams are playing, provide game updates, and
show the final scores afterward.

It doesn't always work

Before you get too excited about Google Now, you also need to know that it
has its erratic moments and false positives. Big data is still imperfect.

Here are a few examples:

* It occasionally prompts me with directions to local places I
searched for in Google, but would never actually visit, like the office of a
plumber.
* It shows me alerts for events that I have no interest in and I'm not
sure what would have triggered the alerts, other than spam in my inbox.
* There are times when I expect it to give me an update or information
about something (like a flight I'm taking, for example), and the alert never
shows up.
* I increased the frequency that I wanted to see news and stock
updates and yet I still rarely ever see any Google Now "cards" on either of
those things.

Why it's significant

Despite its hiccups, Google Now clearly offers enough value to outweigh its
imperfections as well as its obvious squishiness around privacy

Re: [AI] difficulties pertaining image in MS word

2013-02-14 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Siddhi,

You will have to read the document and determine which image is being
referred to. Hitting the return key creates a new paragraph so yes, the
formatting will alter. You will have to use the indentation reporting
feature to check what has changed. Alternatively, you can try checking the
properties of that paragraph.

Pistorius: the inspirational 'Blade Runner'
AFP
Johannesburg, February 14, 2013First Published: 16:30 IST(14/2/2013) Last

http://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/Africa/Pistorius-the-inspirational-
Blade-Runner/Article1-1011648.aspx
Oscar Pistorius is one of the world's most recognisable sportsmen and an
inspirational figure the world over after he became the first double-amputee
to compete at both the Olympics and Paralympics last year. The 26-year-old
was already a household name going into the 2012 Games in London, after he
made history by becoming the first amputee to run at the World Championships
in 2011, where he took silver with South Africa's 4x400m sprint team.

The Johannesburg-born runner had both legs amputated below the knee when he
was 11 months old after being born without lower leg bones.
But he played sports unhindered while growing up, switching to running after
fracturing a knee playing rugby.

"You're not disabled by your disabilities but abled by your abilities," he
told Athlete magazine in a 2011 interview.

His 2011 appearance came after a high-profile controversy about whether he
was even eligible to compete against able-bodied athletes, with some arguing
that his custom-built carbon-fibre running blades gave him an unfair
advantage.

He successfully appealed against an International Association of Athletics
Federations (IAAF) ban against him competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics to
the Court of Abitration for Sport, although he ultimately failed to qualify.

It was at the Beijing Paralympics, though, where Pistorius supplanted his
compatriot, the swimmer Natalie Du Toit, as the most well-known disabled
athlete of all time, after he won all three main sprint events, the 100m,
200m and 400m.

He failed to retain all three of his titles in London, though, and was even
embroiled, ironically, in a dispute about the length of his rivals' running
blades, after he was beaten into silver by Brazil's Alan Oliveira in the
half-lap race.

Defeat in the blue riband 100m followed but Pistorius bounced back to take
gold with his South African team-mates in the 4x100m relay and storm to
victory in the individual 400m, sending the 80,000 Olympic Stadium crowd
wild.

However, both Games were a relative failure in terms of performance for
Pistorius -- he also missed out on the Olympic final and was out of the
medals in the relay.

The defeats showed the rapid improvement of other Paralympic athletes, which
would help raise further the profile of the Games and its popularity, after
for so long being seen as just a sideshow after the Olympics, he argued.

"I think people are going to look back at this Paralympic Games and for the
first time really, truly believe that Paralympic sport is not just
inspirational, it's hardcore sport," he said as the Games closed in the
British capital.

"It's full of triumph, sometimes it has disappointment, but that's what we
look for in sport. We want it to be competitive and that's what it's been
about."

Such a comment was in keeping with Pistorius' philosophy in life and his
attitude towards his own disability, which has proved no bar to success.

At high school, he was so good that his personal fitness coach said she was
unaware for six months that he ran on prosthetic legs.

Off the track, Pistorius has a passion for motorbikes, adrenalin and
speed: four years ago he crashed his boat in a river south of Johannesburg,
breaking two ribs, an eye socket and his jaw.

He also once owned two white tigers but sold them to a zoo in Canada when
they became too big.

Last December, he ran against -- and beat -- Arab horse Maserati in a race
over 200m in the Qatari capital, Doha, and again saw his victory as a way of
challenging perceptions about disabilities around the World.

he wants us to waste our time by reputting it in to another list hence it is
being continued.bifurcation was not necessary. i'm not opposing that
list but moderation is not essential for such threads. many of them are not

Hi,

While I too appreciate the methods suggested by the learned friends, I
wonder if the moderator of this list has no place amongst us? Why the thread
is being continued despite of his email on the thread specifically
suggesting to continue it on the dedicated mobile list? If it can't be, then
there is no purpose of that list and it can be considered for closing down.

Subject: [AI] Editing Audio files.

Hi,

Request advise and help in accomplishing the mentioned task accessibly
for

details mentioned below:

-I have a large MP3 audio file which I want to break into smaller
manageable

bits, and move material from within it to create a new file as per topics
that I want to work with. So essentially, I want to cut certain bits of
matter and paste it with some other available in the original file to
create

a new file.

-This file needs to have a time marker as per the size of the file, and
need

not be even sized files. I want to create separate files for each topic.

-Advise sought on how to accomplish this in the most accessible manner,
using which software or utility?

Is it possible to create a daisy book of sorts using any available daisy
utility for such a purpose?

Any help is much appreciated and responses awaited.

Thanks,

Payal

There is a freeware
perhaps at the site of jaws users at
www.jaws-users.com

which splits file into equal segments. it won't be topicwise though. You may
also sue mp3 splitter and joiner for equal splitting. it is very efficient
for joining and splitting. it is not free, however.

-Advise sought on how to accomplish this in the most accessible manner,
using which software or utility?

Is it possible to create a daisy book of sorts using any available daisy
utility for such a purpose?

Any help is much appreciated and responses awaited.

Thanks,

Payal
