According to the study, adults with a disability had a higher
prevalence of several chronic illnesses including diabetes,
hypertension and high cholesterol. People with disabilities were twice

Katherine Froehlich-Grobe, Ph.D., lead author of the paper and
associate professor of health promotion and behavioral science at The
UT School of Public Health Dallas Regional Campus, says the obesity
disparity between people with disabilities and people without a
 disability should be addressed.

She suggests that primary care providers should amp up their efforts
on counseling patients to change their lifestyle with diet and
exercise instead of only prescribing medication to control the chronic
 illnesses.

Recent guidelines say those with disabilities should participate in
moderate physical activity and be as active as they can within the
 limitations of their disability.

The study was recently published in the American Journal of
 Preventative Medicine.

Subject: [AI] Classics Popular fictions in Braille

Report from Times of India, Kolkata edition

KOLKATA: It's rare to find a Bengali household that does not have an
omnibus of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay and Rabindranath Tagore's works.
Ditto with the popular detective fictions featuring Byomkesh and Feluda.
Yet, there are lakhs of visually impaired people who have no access to
these titles that make Bengali literature so rich.

Recognising this long-standing need, Third Eye charitable trust unveiled
several titles in Braille on Saturday. These included Tagore's
'Sanchaita',

Bibhuti Bhushan Bandyopadhyay's 'Pather Panchali', Bolai Chand
Mukhopadhyay's 'Bonoful', Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 'Srikanto',
Jibananda Das' 'Banalata Sen', Subir Sen's 'Jana Theke Ajana', 'Gangtoke
Gondogol' and 'Badshahi Angti' by Satyajit
Ray,
Byomkesh's 'Adim Ripu' by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay, 'Arun Barun Kironmala'
by Sailen Ghosh and Ashapurna Devi's 'Kishore Bachai Golpo'.

Several English titles including RK Lakshman's 'Malgudi Days', APJ Abdul
Kalam's 'Mission India', Gandhi's 'The Story of My Experiments with
Truth',

'The Jewel of India'
by Jawaharlal
Nehru and 'Our
Constitution' by Leila Seth were also released in Braille as were some
books in Hindi. Braille books have reverse indentation or raised embossing
that allows the visually impaired to read the alphabets by touch.

"Each day, each moment there are so many shades of colors that reflect off
our eyes and we don't even notice. How often we love curling up with a
magazine or a thriller or a poem? How often do we stop to think of the
millions for whom this is a luxury? They who wait patiently, for others to
get a little free from their busy schedule to just read them a few pages.
It is a small effort on our part, telling these beautiful minds that their
wait is over," said Third Eye trustee board member Mahua Seth.

Pointing to the need to bridge the gap between the large body of
literature

that is available to the masses and a fraction that the visually impaired
have access to, social activist Shampa Sengupta said the amendment to the
Copyright Act last year would help publish more books in Braille.

PricewaterhouseCoopers
manager
(HR) Asif Iqbal who lost his vision to a
genetic
disorder
when he was in his teens hailed the move. "It is a pity that the visually
impaired have so little access to books despite it being the only form of
recreation that is available to them apart from music. When I was growing
up, the challenge was acute and I had to depend on
friends to
read out text books during my B Com and MBA. But there is a whole world
beyond texts that I could not explore. I am glad that some books are now
being converted to Braille. But we still have a long way to go," he said.

Five children's encyclopedia from Parragon like Our
Universe
, Incredible Earth and Human Body have been converted into DAISY format
which can now be accessed and enjoyed by both visually impaired and
dyslexic children. The books will be given away free to 17 schools in
Bengal.

Hi
No airlines provide concession for escorts.
Indian Airlines and Jet air gives 50% concession on the base fare.
In reality the regular fares are far lower than the concessional fare
provided they are booked in advance. You may be lucky to get the reduced
rates close to the departure dates.

[AI] 12th National Meeting of the State Commissioners for Persons with Disabilities to review implementation of PwD Act:

2013-06-30 Thread Prashanth
Press Information Bureau
Government of India
Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment
28-June-2013 18:22 IST

The Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Kumari Selja inaugurated
the 12th National
Meeting of the State Commissioners for Persons with Disabilities to review
implementation of
PwD Act here today. The Minister in her address said that a meeting of this
kind provides an
important forum for exchanging views and experiences. The meeting will also
help promoting
a culture of shared learning and understanding of critical issues around
implementation of
the PwD Act, 1995.

The Minister expressed satisfaction that the disability rights discourse is now
getting institutionalized
in the larger legal and policy framework of India. The ratification of the
UNCRPD and the setting
up of a dedicated Department of Disability Affairs in the Ministry of Social
Justice & Empowerment,
are glaring illustrations of Government's commitment towards persons with
disabilities. The
Government is also working at replacing the old PwD Act of 1995 for providing
more respect
to individual dignity and protecting fundamental freedoms of PwDs. The proposed
"Rights of
Persons with Disabilities Bill" contains elaborate and comprehensive provisions
which are in
harmony with the UNCRPD.The Bill will be a distinct improvement on the existing
PwD Act, 1995.

Kumari Selja noted that the recent Five Year Plans including the current
Twelfth Five Year
Plan have adopted a rights based approach. The Plan recognizes persons with
disabilities as
a critical resource and also as active agents of change. The Twelfth Five Year
Plan which earmarks
a total allocation to the tune of Rs.3,000 crore envisages a number of
ambitious and interesting
initiatives. These include setting up of a National Centre for Universal
Design, establishment
of Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC) and setting up of
Braille printing
presses across various States of India. It also proposes to undertake the
exercise of harmonizing
all the relevant domestic laws (including the mainstream laws) and policies
with the UNCRPD.

The absence of full-time Commissioners with independent charge in many States,
ineffective
functioning of State Coordination and Executive Committees and inadequacy of
human & material
resources for the State Commissioners are amongst major areas of concern, the
Minister said
and requested the State Government's to have a dedicated Department to oversee
the disability
issues so that the State Commissioners can interact and coordinate well.

The Minister also noted that in respect of the thematic areas - education,
employment, accessibility
and social security need to be attended to with the urgency that they merit.
While special
recruitment drive should be launched across States to fill-up the backlog of
vacancies in government
posts, tangible steps need to be taken to improve the quality of education.

The Minister said that urgent initiatives to ensure barrier free environment to
persons with
disabilities must be initiated without any further loss of time and States
should take advantage
of the Ministry's SIPDA scheme.

Speaking on the occasion Shri Sudhir Bhargava, Secretary, Department of Social
Justice & Empowerment
complimented Chandigarh, Jharkhand and Tripura for issuing disability
certificates to 100%
persons with disabilities in their respective States/UT and also requested the
Commissioners
of Arunachal Pradesh, Delhi, Nagaland, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli
where less than
20% persons with disabilities have been issued disability certificates, to
prevail upon the
concerned department to take up this matter on a campaign mode and cover all
persons with disabilities.

The Secretary added that the role of Commissioners is crucial for securing the
cooperation
of and the coordination among various departments of the State Governments.
Proper implementation
of the scheme of the Ministry and full utilization of funds under Commissioners
is important
for realizing the Ministry's goal to equip persons with disabilities and make
them productive
members of the society.

Present on the meeting were Shri Awanish Kumar Awasthi, Joint Secretary,
Department of Disability
Affairs, Shri Prasanna Kumar Pincha, Chief Commissioner for Persons with
Disabilities, Maj.
Gen. Ian Cardozo, Chairman, Rehabilitation Council of India, Smt. Poonam
Natarajan, Chairperson,
National Trust, State Commissioners for Persons with Disabilities and other
senior officers
of the Ministry.

Re: [AI] People with a disability likelier to be obese,A Study

2013-06-30 Thread Ekinath Khedekar
Hi,

I quite agree with Rahul.

Firstly, we have to make extra efforts and arrangements to play
sports. Like in my case, for joining the pool or gym, I have to really
convince the instructors that I would not be an extra burden or
liability to them. However, liking towards sports is an innate thing
and disability just adds a bit of reluctance to it.

And understandably, I find my VI friends quite averse to physical
activities. They make good intellectuals, but sportsmen. It’s a
generalization based on experiences, which may be wrong.

We have as in many things had to make extra effort to remain fit and fine )

Cheers and enjoy work outs and swimming

2013-06-30 Thread Ketan Kothari
Dear Friends,

I am griefstriken by Jagdish's passing away. We have been from the
same school and have been colleagues and friends. Unfortunately, I
was to be the first outside his immediate family to have known of this
tragedy.

We were making long plans for our future in Sightsavers and Jagdish
had miles to go. He was a brilliant and wellread person. It was a
delight to exchange views with him and a truly learning experience.

He leaves behind Meera, his wife and 2 young children. It is just
unbelieveable. Let us all pray for his soul and for the strength to
Meera and the family.

[AI] UGC Net exam experience and implementation of recent scribe guidelines

2013-06-30 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafel
Hi listers, today I appeared in UGC Net exam in the related subject of
my PG degree, that is Human Rights and Duties because I am already JRF
in my main subject, law.
First of all let me share very funny and blunder mistake which I
committed today unwittingly. My Net center was located in Udhyog Nagar
while I reached at Udhyog bhavan metro station which is not far from
my hostel. I misread Udhyog Nagar to Udhyog Bhawan being well likely
in their name. when I enquired the proper address from one of
attendent at metro station, he was surprised with the full address of
the center, he with surprise, asked my admit card, after seeing it,
he emended me that your center is Udhyog Nagar and not Udhyog Bhawan!
I was shocked and shaken! now the funny thing was that it was 8:15,
and the distance from this metro station to the desired station was at
least 1 hour travel in metro which had 3 interchange stations in
between. Friends it was a dismay, but any how I managed to reach at
the center at 9:47AM, while the exam was started at 9:30AM! and the
entry was allowed only till 9:50! Luckily I win by 3 minutes! Thanks
to Delhi metro.

Now coming to the scribe and guidelines, I brought one of my friends
with me to write my exam, I already having recent guidelines with me
aproved by MHRD and UGC, and the copy of the case which was posted by
Mr Vikas yesterday on access india. The center coordinator asked me
about the qualification of my scribe , i told her that he is a
graduate in the subject other then me. She didn't enquire any thing
further, nore she did ask scribe to firnish any document in support of
my claim, otherwise I would have argued her version with support of
recent guidelines.
The seating arrangement was very good. The staf was very supported and
we were provided air conditioner room and the exam was very peaceful.
The fact that human right paper was so easy, burgeoned my happiness, I
am quite satisfied of muy performance in this paper, .
Hope other candidates also experienced the same facileness from the
concern centers.

Re: [AI] CCPD Order for Implementation of Exam Writing Guidelines in NET

2013-06-30 Thread Vikas Gupta
You may like to approach the disability commission in your state and
file a request for addressing the problem posed by the absence of
proper exam writing guidelines for disabled. You may make a reference
to the guidelines framed by the Central office of CCPD in Delhi and
their adoption by the Union ministries of MSJE and MHRD. Let the state
commission take this matter with the state ministry there. You and
your friends may directly also approach the education ministry and the
ministry for SJE in your province.

Re: [AI] People with a disability likelier to be obese,A Study

2013-06-30 Thread Rahul Bajaj
It isn't hard to establish a co-relation between those two things...
Disabled people generally do not engage in sports or allied activities..
Our focus often remains restricted to meeting our most important needs. This
can definitely be a cause of obesity.

Hi,
I have been using tata photon for two years and initially I was getting
speed of 3.1 MBPS but now it is about 2.4 MBPS. Actually, the speed of any
data card internet connection depends on the quality of the network signals
in the particular area. Anyway, do you have postpaid or prepaid?? Try to
switch between photon max and photon radio buttons under settings and se
whether it makes a difference.

Hi,

I recently started using Tata Photon Plus.
I get download speed of just 90-120 kbps which increases to 180-200 kbps
during night

Do I have to make some settings on my PC to increase the speed?
How much download speed are other members of accessindia getting?

[AI] People with a disability likelier to be obese,A Study

2013-06-30 Thread avinash shahi
What do you say guys on this study.
Less mobility leads to 'Motapapan'?
Adults with a disability are more likely to be obese or extremely
obese, according to a study.
http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-06-27/health/40232127_1_disability-hypertension-counseling-patients
Researchers at The University of Texas School of Public Health
identified participants as having a disability if they reported
mobility issues.

According to the study, adults with a disability had a higher
prevalence of several chronic illnesses including diabetes,
hypertension and high cholesterol. People with disabilities were twice
as likely to have prescribed medication for hypertension and
lipid-lowering medicine.

The study was recently published in the American Journal of
Preventative Medicine.

no doubt that Visually Challenged are using net banking including

a seperate option for visually Challenged in which transactional rights
will not be provided.
So if we want to avail transactional rights in SBI netbanking, we should

Hi dear!

It seems that the bank has not given yu the rights for transections,
if the bank does not give the transaction rights, the meaning of
profile password doesn't emerge. First you check whether the bank
has

given you the transaction rights or not.

are also using their platform for internet banking so we'll also give you
the same what SBI is giving to the visually handicapped.

well, transactions rights will be given in the provisional page which is
"net banking for the visually impaired" and that too fund transfer with in
own accounts and you cannot do the inter bank transfer. so, it is
confined indeed. you must go for normal net banking in order to avail all
net banking features.

Hi,

I recently started using Tata Photon Plus.
I get download speed of just 90-120 kbps which increases to 180-200 kbps
during night

Do I have to make some settings on my PC to increase the speed?
How much download speed are other members of accessindia getting?

no doubt that Visually Challenged are using net banking including
transactional rights in normal net banking but in SBI netbanking, there is a
seperate option for visually Challenged in which transactional rights will
not be provided.
So if we want to avail transactional rights in SBI netbanking, we should
not get option of netbanking for Visually Challenged be activated.

[AI] Mr. Jagdish Chauhan passes away

2013-06-30 Thread Ekinath Khedekar
Hello Friends,

With lot of grief I have to inform that Mr. Jagdish Chauhan has passed
away last night due to a cardiac attack.
He was a Happy home’ite and then a topper and a gold meddlist in
Hindi from Mumbai University.

He taught us for a year in our school, Happy Home. Truly a fantastic
Hindi teacher and a great motivator and guide.

I could have never understood a long Hindi poem “Saaket”, but for his
vast knowledge of Brij and Hindi vocab.

He leaves behind a wife and 3 Children.

May god rest his sould in peace…

this is what the unfortunate thing!. now setting profile password has
become inaccesible, but earlier there was no issue.

Let me clarify. SBI has INB facility which is quite accessible with
screen readers(untill the recent profile password issue). But SBI has
an INB facility exclusively for visually challenged people in which
One can have viewing rights and limited transaction rights(meaning
funds can be transfered within own accounts, and not to any third
parties). So, if someone makes a complaint about this profile
password issue, the bank may say that they can, or even should, take
the service exclusively for visually challenged instead of the general
service. Let me say that I use the general service. So, I request
those using the exclusive service, if there are any, to clarify
whether this profile password inaccessibility issue exists in that
service as well. If it is so, then I think both the issues can be
taken up; 1) making the profile password reset accessible and 2)
dispensing with the exclusive service and providing the main stream
service available to all.

"net banking for the visually impaired" and that too fund transfer with in

This is what SBH was going on telling to me for not giving me transaction
