[AI] introducing you all to a different kind of music.

2013-10-29 Thread Shireen Irani
hi all,

some of u may be aware of this form of music, but for those who r not,
i'm posting below a youtube link, please do listen to it. it is a form
known as accapella music, which is performed without any instruments.
all the sounds of instruments r made only with body parts such as the
mouth, hands etc. but when u here it, u wont believe that all those
sounds r actually produced with only the body.
this may b slightly off topic for AI, but my reason for posting this
here, is that if any1 believes they have the talent to encorporate
this as part of any band, or music group, it will b a good and unique
venture. indian bands doing accapella is slightly rare although there
r some, but u will mostly find this in western music.
this is a popular song pehla nasha which u all know, but it is
performed by a foreign band which u will guess from their accent.
so please do listen to this link, with headphones or good speakers for
best effect. try to pay attention to all the background purcussion
sounds created by the group.
let me know what u think of it.
here goes.

Yes, I directly talked to their customer care number, they have
registered my complaint and I recieved the complaint number too. The
told me that the matter shall be resolved with in 20 days. Though in
next 7 days they will give me update after talking to the seller, they
gave me an option either of refund of the amount or replacement of the

ebay highly recommend it to everyone around. I have never face any

buy things from ebay. I would strongly recommend you contact ebay.
also, please leave a negative feedback for the merchant. you must have

Great, do share your experience! Though for future, make sure, you
never checkout as a guest from any site. Also, check the rating of the
seller place an order with the sellers with a higher rating. Also,
if a site allows you to leave feedback about your purchase, make it a
point to leave your honest feedbac.

[AI] New technology aids the blind do yoga

2013-10-29 Thread Vivekananda Doddamani.
Scientists have developed an innovative software programme that
watches a user's movements and gives spoken feedback on what to change
to accurately complete a yoga pose.
My hope for this technology is for people who are blind or low-vision
to be able to try it out, and help give a basic understanding of yoga
in a more comfortable setting, said project lead Kyle Rector, a
University of Washington doctoral student in computer science and
engineering.

The programme, called Eyes-Free Yoga, uses Microsoft Kinect software
to track body movements and offer auditory feedback in real time for
six yoga poses.

Rector wrote programming code that instructs the Kinect to read a
user's body angles, then gives verbal feedback on how to adjust his or
her arms, legs, neck or back to complete the pose.

For example, the programme might say: Rotate your shoulders left or
Lean sideways toward your left.

The result is an accessible yoga 'exergame' a video game used for
exercise that allows people without sight to interact verbally with a
simulated yoga instructor.

Rector and collaborators Julie Kientz, a UW assistant professor in
Human Centered Design Engineering, and Cynthia Bennett, a research
assistant in computer science and engineering, believe this can
transform a typically visual activity into something that blind people
can also enjoy.

Each of the six poses has about 30 different commands for improvement
based on a dozen rules deemed essential for each yoga position. Rector
worked with a number of yoga instructors to put together the criteria
for reaching the correct alignment in each pose.

The Kinect first checks a person's core and suggests alignment
changes, then moves to the head and neck area, and finally the arms
and legs. It also gives positive feedback when a person is holding a
pose correctly.

Rector worked with 16 blind and low-vision people around Washington to
test the programme and get feedback. Several of the participants had
never done yoga before, while others had tried it a few times or took
yoga classes regularly.

Thirteen of the 16 people said they would recommend the programme and
nearly everyone would use it again.

The technology uses simple geometry and the law of cosines to
calculate angles created during yoga. For example, in some poses a
bent leg must be at a 90-degree angle, while the arm spread must form
a 160-degree angle.

The Kinect reads the angle of the pose using cameras and
skeletal-tracking technology, then tells the user how to move to reach
the desired angle.

Rector and collaborators plan to make this technology available online
so users could download the programme, plug in their Kinect and start
doing yoga.

[AI] University of Hyderabad to create facilities for students with disabilities

2013-10-29 Thread avinash shahi
Hyderabad, Oct 17 2013
Students and staff with disabilities studying or working in the
University of Hyderabad will get some facilities, to make their campus
life a bit more easier.
http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/education/university-of-hyderabad-to-create-facilities-for-students-with-disabilities/article5244530.ece
As per a new plan, 18 lifts will be installed in the 15 buildings,
including academic, library and administration on the sprawling campus
in Gachibowli area of Hyderabad. Each lift will have the provision to
accommodate wheel chairs in accordance with the Bureau of Indian
Standards. In addition, there will be fixtures such as auditory
signals, Braille signages and accessible control panels and other
works required to create a barrier-free environment and other
facilities for students with disabilities that the University will
take up.

The Central University has got a grant of Rs 6 crore to create the
barrier-free environment. The Union Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment has approved the grant-in-aid to the university. For the
present financial year, Rs 4 crore has been released as grant-in-aid.
This grant has come under the schemes arising out of the
implementation of persons with disabilities (Equal Opportunities
Protection of Rights and Full Participation Act, 1995-SIPDA).

The Vice-Chancellor has taken the initiative of making the campus
disabled-friendly. As a consequence of this, a disability audit was
conducted on the campus by Shivani Gupta of AccessAbility. The
Delhi-based firm is an architectural access and universal design
consultancy that provides design solutions to include persons with
disabilities as clients and employees.

In a press release, the university said this has been done for the
first time by a Central University and the proposal sent by university
has been approved by the Ministry. The university is among the top
five Indian universities, with strengths in science, arts and
research.

The project needs to be completed within 12 months.

Great, do share your experience! Though for future, make sure, you
never checkout as a guest from any site. Also, check the rating of the
seller place an order with the sellers with a higher rating. Also,
if a site allows you to leave feedback about your purchase, make it a
point to leave your honest feedbac.

Re: [AI] unsatisfactory experience on shopping on Ebay.in

2013-10-29 Thread Bharat
I would call it good marketing. They besides, got a happy, positive,
customer. Besides, ebay just managed to earn a good name!
I am so happy with them, that after buying countless things from them,
only once i gave a negative feedback to them. That too because the
seller did not communicate well with me.

Re: [AI] regarding substitution to application key on dell laptop

2013-10-29 Thread Raaj
Shift plus f10. but you must disable the multimedia feature with your
function keys by going into bias first. If not, those function keys will
behave as multimedia keys. In such case, you may have to hit three key
combinations. Like shift plus function key plus f10.

Re: [AI] regarding help or tips for writing statement of affairs

2013-10-29 Thread Shireen Irani
hi,
have u decided the topic of your interest for which u will b writing
your sop?? once your sure of that, u need to read at least 2 3 books
and a few articles on the subject to have an idea about the latest
research already done in that area. once u do that, u need to narrow
down your own research question.
so for example if u have decided a brod area of say silvia plath's
poetry, then u need to narrow it down to 1 particular theme. like the
recurrence of death in her poems, or human relations in her poems etc.
some theme rather than a brod general area.
once u have decided the particular topic, u need to write about 2
pages worth of why you'd like to work in that area, and what exactly r
the questions u want to address.
so u start with an intro about the work that has already been done, u
can quote some of the articles u will have read. then go on to address
the main issue. so for example if u have chosen the theme of death in
her poems, then u can give a few examples of lines from her different
poems where the same theme keeps recurring. the more examples u give,
the more qualitative is your sop because u actually have enough
instances to work on.
and in your conclusion u can describe the method of your research. so
if your doing a statistical study rather than a theoretical 1, then u
can explain who will b your subjects, what r the questions u will b
addressing, etc. then u end your sop mentioning the references. that
is, all the books/ articles u have read. that is very important. dont
forget to mention the references.
even in the references, u 1st write the name of authors, then the year
of publication of the book/ article, and then the name of the article.
for examples u can just chek the end of any article. u will have a lot
of references.
just remember a few important points.
dont ever lie about any references. if u have not read the book, dont
ever mention it because you might get a question in your interview
based on that book. so dont take that chance. and whatever u write in
your proposal, u will b asked questions based on that. so b sure about
every single sentence u write in those 2 pages. dont coppy paste
anything that u dont understand. u need to b able to answer questions
about any word/ sentences that u write in the sop.
these r just some basic points, u can write to me off the list if u
have any more specific questions.
all the best.
shireen.

According to me, there is no such provision for returning back any goods
which are purchased via online. Flipcart offers 30 days replacement
guarantee, that if the device you've purchase was damaged or giving any
negative result. moreover flipcart also has a good review of any good which
you are about to purchase, but oops! This flipkart service is not available
in our area, other wise I love flipkart as to purchase any good via online.
And again I request you that please don't purchase any thing via guest

also place order to purchase my new sterio nokia bh500 Bluetooth headset
from the side is www.softclues.com. I am hoping that I'll get my headset

[AI] Call for Papers: Gender and Disability in Work and Organization

2013-10-29 Thread avinash shahi
Though the date for sending abstract is just approaching, but
researchers who have already done their work on desired field can
still send their abstracts.
CFP: 8th Biennial International Interdisciplinary conference, 24th –
26th June, 2014 Keele University, UK Call for abstracts Gender and
Disability in Work and Organisation Jannine Williams, Northumbria
University, ENGLAND Deborah Foster, Cardiff University, WALES Alan
Roulstone, Leeds University, ENGLAND Stefan Hardonk, Hasselt
University, BELGIUM This stream aims to promote the exploration and
development of research on gender, disability, ableism and impairment
in work and organizations. In doing so, we encourage a concern with
the construction of disability within a category of social relations;
in relation to and with non-disability, and how this set of relations
is shaped through and interacts with gender relations, the
organization of gender and the gendering of organizations. This focus
emerges from a long standing concern to highlight the importance of
developing richer understandings of inequality and privilege in
studies of work and organizations, where gender is well established,
yet disability remains marginal (Williams and Mavin, 2012; Foster and
Vass, 2013). Acker’s (1990:146) work on gender reflects a broad
concern to critique gender processes which explore how ‘advantage and
disadvantage, exploitation and control, action and emotion, meaning
and identity, are patterned through and, in terms of a distinction
between male and female, masculine and feminine’, however, the
patterning of organizing along distinctions between disability and
non-disability and the differences this makes for women and men remain
under-researched. Feminist disability studies research also highlights
the neglect of disability in feminist and gender debates (Thomas,
2006). In turning to disability studies we find a rich literature
which suggests that the conceptualization and theorization of
disability makes a difference to how organizing processes and
practices are understood to reflect (and privilege) distinctions
between disabled and non-disabled people. From this literature a
distinction between impairment (bodily variations designated
impairments (Thomas, 2007)) and disability (the contextual factors
which mediate the experience of impairment, marginalizing experiences
of impairment and the social spaces available to disabled people
(Williams and Mavin, 2012)) emerges, which suggests further research
is required to understand how processes and practices in organizing
reflect, sustain or challenge such understandings. For example, recent
research on ableism, the privileging and maintenance of non-disability
as an organizing normative principle (Campbell, 2009; Chouinard, 1997;
Hughes, 2007) may contribute to understanding how experiences of
impairment become marginalized. Ableism can be understood as the
‘ideas, practices, institutions and social relations that presume
ablebodiedness, and by so doing, construct…[disabled people]…as
marginalised…”others”’ (Chouinard, 1997:380). Understanding how
ableism contributes to gendered experiences of organizing can bring
disability research into line with epistemological critiques in
organization studies which have highlighted the importance of asking
for how and for whom knowledge is produced (Calás and Smircich, 1999;
Ferguson, 1994), and studies of difference more broadly. Recent work
in organisation studies has highlighted how disabled, female and older
workers are discursively constructed as ‘different’ and problematic,
unable to perform as expected, with material effects (Zanoni, 2011).
Being perceived as unable to perform as anticipated is suggested to be
tied to standardised work processes, and expectations of flexibility
for maximum productivity, yet such ‘difference’ categorizations were
simultaneously re-appropriated by disabled organizational members,
using their discursively constructed ‘difference’ to resist management
control (Zanoni, 2011). In the sociology of work employment,
moreover, Foster (2007), Foster and Fosh (2010) and Foster and Wass
(2013) have highlighted the need for further research on the workplace
experiences of disabled employees, the negotiation of adjustments and
the need to challenge conceptions of standardized work for people
living with impairment, because ableist norms, like gendered norms,
shape work contexts. They argue that work is designed around normative
assumptions of non-disability, and that disabled employees cannot
achieve organisational ‘fit’ until managers reconceptualise jobs. This
requires a radical culture change around our understanding of what is
a standard job, intersecting with debates about gender and flexible/
non-standard work. Roulstone and Williams (2012) suggest that whilst
management may hold the prerogative for workplace adjustments, the
experiences of disabled managers and leaders suggests they similarly
experience some complexity in negotiating work

Re: [AI] unsatisfactory experience on shopping on Ebay.in

2013-10-29 Thread mukesh jain
hello,
recently even i have purchased one product from the seller big bazar
through ebay. the item was delivered to me was the different one than
i ordered for. this actually never happened with me through ebay. so i
contacted and notified the same to the seller but didn't heard
anything from the seller for few days. so i directly went ahead and
marked my feedback negative. seeing this remarks, seller contacted
imediately to me and insisted me to revise my feedback and assured me
to send replacement to which i have strongly denied. but to my
surprise, i got my refund back within three days along with the
delivery of the item i have actually ordered.

this complimentary treatment may not happen with others hence, do not
recommend it to others. but this is just to show the concern of the
sellers on ebay and the ebay selling mechanism about the honest
feedback of the buyer.

as far as the accessibility of the ebay site is concerned, it was much
easier to navigate to the product categories till april this year and
i think from may onwards, since the time of new appointment of CEO of
ebay, this interface has been changed which is bit tricky. yes,
earlier the option to choose the options such as resolution method,
preference of contact etc were quite accessible which were in the form
of radio buttons and check boxes but we have to click upon these
options assuming that these are the links. then in some edit box, i
had to type the actual words as appeared on the screen for instance,
in the prefered resolution i had to actually copy the words i want my
refund and paste in to the edit box and after pressing enter this
option was taken as my prefered resolution. so i actually have to
apply my own technics to fill out the claim form. so if ebay returns
back the earlier interface, would be of great help.

thanks,

Re: [AI] Malayalam text reader and typing tool.

2013-10-29 Thread Him Prasad Gautam
Hi Ashik,
Basically the layout and the alphabet pattern (character and name) of
Gujarati and Malayalam is simmilar.
However the following difference exists:
1. The letters om nukta and ardhachandra are not in Malayalam.
2. The letters similar Chandra e and Chandra o of Gujarati(short e and
o) which rare in your case are frequently used in Southern languages.
3. Some additional letters like chillu character, length mark etc are
used in Malayalam.
4. Rest is same. Same key assignment as in Gujarati_Varnamala, same
rule of writing of vowel signs and compound letters like xa, gna.

Well, it's a known thing that audio CAPTCHA is not a complete solution but
removing it not something that security teams would agree. But besides CAPTCHA,
there are bigger issues pointed out by Mukesh and Vikas. So let me first work
on them. To start with:
1. Buyer experience includes categories, search etc
2. Resolution centre.

Let's see how it goes.

[AI] True or false: Do these 5 common tech tips really work?

2013-10-29 Thread Hozefa Tambawala
Q. I was having some Internet issues the other day, so I called tech
support. The tech told me to unplug my cable modem for 30 seconds and
then plug it back in. It solved the problem, but it got me thinking.
Why do you have to wait 30 seconds? What difference does it make? The
tech wasn't sure, so I thought if anyone would know, you would.
Thanks!
-Ben from Boston, MA, listens to my national radio show on WBZ 1030 AM.

A. That's a good question, Ben. Some tech advice is so common that no
one really stops to think about where it came from. In this case,
there really is a reason to leave your modem unplugged.

Your modem - and most of your tech gear - contains capacitors. These
hold a charge for at least 10 seconds after the power is off. Most
people wait 30 seconds or more to make sure the capacitors discharge
completely.

While there's a charge, your gadget's RAM is still active. That means
whatever problem you're trying to fix isn't wiped out. If you plug the
gadget in right away, the problem just comes back.

So, while it may seem weird or unnecessary, you should always wait
after you unplug.

This is just one example of old tech wisdom that no one questions.
Though this one's still true, many nuggets of conventional wisdom are
false.

Let's dust off five other old tech chestnuts to see if they're still true.

Don't shut down your computer at night
Some people will tell you to never shut down your computer. They
believe that the more you turn it on and off, the more likely you are
to damage it.

While this was true in the early PC days, it's not a problem now. Your
computer won't get wear-and-tear from frequent shutdowns. In fact, you
can actually save power and money on your electric bill.

However, that doesn't mean you have to shut down every night.

If you want the benefits of shutting down without the hassle of
rebooting, learn about your computer's Sleep and Hibernate modes.

Just press the power button to turn off your computer
Turning off modern computers is quite a process. You have to go to
StartShutdown. Then you have to wait for it to do who knows what
before finally turning off.

Some people prefer to just hit the power button (on modern computers
you have to hold it for 5 to 10 seconds for a hard shutdown), or flip
the Off switch on their power strip. It's much faster.

In the old days, hard shutdowns weren't really a problem. In fact, in
the days of DOS and Windows 3.1, that's how computers were shut down
normally.

You don't want to do that with modern operating systems, however. They
do a lot of work in RAM, which requires constant power. When a
computer shuts down, it's making sure everything important is safely
on the hard drive.

If you just kill the power, you might lose important data. You could
even cause operating system errors down the road.

I recommend shutting down the right way. Only kill the power if your
computer is already frozen.

You must have a screensaver
Who doesn't love screensavers? They can be a great expression of your
hobbies and interests. They're even moving off of computers and onto
other gadgets. In fact, I use a great photo screensaver on my HDTV.

Originally, however, screensavers were meant to literally save your
screen. Old-fashioned CRT monitors would burn in if left on the same
image too long.

Today's LCD and LED monitors don't have that problem. Unless you have
a dinosaur of a monitor, you don't actually need a screensaver. Now
they're just for fun.

More is better
The history of technology is a race for more. Cars need more
horsepower, more legroom and more trunk space. Planes need more speed,
more carrying capacity and more altitude.

Digital technology isn't any different. Back in the '90s and '00s,
computers needed more processor speed, more RAM and more hard drive
space.

For digital cameras, we needed more megapixels. Even now, we want
smartphones with bigger screens and faster cellular.

More makes it easy to decide what to buy. And manufacturers and
marketers love more because people will always buy the next bigger
and better product.

Well, in the past, more was usually better. A 100 megahertz computer
was light-years better than a 33 megahertz computer. A 5 megapixels
camera was much better than 1 megapixel.

That's not so true anymore. In many areas, technology has outgrown the
needs of the average person. Any inexpensive point-and-shoot camera
takes fine pictures. Any budget computer is usable for most tasks.

A computer with an 8-core processor, 1 terabyte hard drive and 8 gigs
of RAM sounds impressive. However, most people won't even use a
quarter of what it can do.

There are free smartphones that work just as well as high-end
smartphones. The list goes on.

In fact, some manufacturers are starting to trade quantity for
quality. Take the HTC One, for example. Its 4 megapixel camera takes
better images than 8 and 13 megapixel cameras on other smartphones. It
smartly trades megapixels for sensor size.

The key these days isn't more,
