Re: [AI] Why Do We Fear the Blind? By Rosemary Mahoney
Dear All The readers responses to that piece are also thought-provoking Enjoy reading http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/07/opinion/understanding-the-blind-and-ourselves.html?partner=rssemc=rssutm_medium=App.netutm_source=PourOver Understanding the Blind, and Ourselves To the Editor: Re “Why Do We Fear the Blind?” (Sunday Review, Jan. 5): Rosemary Mahoney wrote with astute sensitivity about her experience and research to destigmatize blind people. As I embark on my own terrifying journey into rapid vision loss, I know full well that I am different in the world now. I feel less than I am. The more I cannot see, the more it seems I am not seen. As a teacher of the blind, Ms. Mahoney recalls that a woman at a party asked how she could talk to her students, a query Ms. Mahoney interpreted as coming from ignorance. I think that this woman was showing an empathic response to blind people. One of the first devastating losses for people with creeping blindness is the loss of the ability to read and interpret facial expressions and body language in others. This is such an imperative part of human interactions that when absent it makes talking difficult. This is what the woman was probably trying to articulate. Ms. Mahoney dissolves barriers between the sighted and the blind. Blind people need to do their share in undoing habitual prejudices against them. Facing our own fears about our disability will not just help allay fears in others, but will also encourage an empathic response. ROBIN A. BEACH South Dartmouth, Mass., Jan. 5, 2014 To the Editor: As a professor of mathematics for 40 years at the University of Colorado, and as a person who has been totally blind since 5, I was pleased to read Rosemary Mahoney’s article (using my text-to-speech software). I assumed and hoped that my students’ “fear” of me was a result of their difficulty with calculus and geometry, and not because I couldn’t see them. But now I tend to agree that much of this fear or discomfort could have come from their inability to imagine how a blind person can do mathematics. I’ve learned that it isn’t a miracle when a blind person does something unexpected or surprising. The context and the people around are critical parts. My success at teaching without sight had a lot to do with the accommodation and imagination of my students. They learned to learn from me. Maybe they weren’t even afraid by the end of the term. LAWRENCE BAGGETT Boulder, Colo., Jan. 5, 2014 The writer is the author of a memoir, “In the Dark on the Sunny Side.” To the Editor: The article about the difficulty many people have in understanding how blind people manage in the world reminded me of a story in a community newspaper many years ago that I have never forgotten. The reporter interviewed a young woman, blind almost since birth, and her parents. She had just graduated from high school, where she had an outstanding record and was preparing to go off to a prestigious college. Her father recounted how his daughter had once come across the word “handicapped” and asked him what it meant. He responded that it meant that a person could not do things the way most people could and that life would be harder for them. She thought for a moment and then said, “Oh, I see — as if I had to do Braille with my feet!” SUSAN S. ELLENBERG Philadelphia, Jan. 5, 2014 On 1/9/14, Manjularath manjularath...@gmail.com wrote: Dear all these are true experiences of blind people all over the world no matter weather they live in cities or villages but i am sure that we will be able to change the mind set of the society from our positive thinking and actions. Rosemary Mahoney is the author of the forthcoming book “For the Benefit of Those Who See: Dispatches From the World of the Blind.” http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/05/opinion/sunday/why-do-we-fear-the-blind.html?ref=opinionpagewanted=all BRISTOL, R.I. — A FEW years ago, when I mentioned to a woman I met at a party that I was teaching in a school for the blind, she seemed confused. “Can I just ask you one question?” she said. “How do you talk to your students?” I explained that the students were blind, not deaf. Raising the palms of her hands at me, as if to stem further misunderstanding, she said: “Yes, I know they’re not deaf. But what I really mean is, how do you actually talk to them?” I knew, because I had been asked this question before by reasonably intelligent people, that the woman didn’t know exactly what she meant. All she knew was that in her mind there existed a substantial intellectual barrier between the blind and the sighted. The blind could hear, yes. But could they properly understand? Throughout

One, 100 point roster is for ph candidates and two; 200 point roster is for SC/ST/OBC. 100 point roster which was for SC/ST, implemented in 1997 has been replaced by 200 point roster came in to effect in 2007. Eversince, 200 point roster has come in to force , administration of colleges has put 100 point roaster for ph under the carpet. Number of ad-hoc teachersin colleges has increased remarkablybut ph have not been appointedaccording to 100 point roster. Few days back , I had posted the case of my college whereteaching strength has crossed 167but only 4 ph have been appointed while it should be 6. Yesterday, I had registered my protest to EOC, university of delhi which I I am pasting below.i request all the ph teachers of delhi university to ensure proper implement ation of 100 point roster in their respective colleges so that we could record our presence in university in dignified manner. I would be happy to help , if needed. My complaint is pasted : To, Dr. Vipin Tiwari, OSD (EOC) University of Delhi, Delhi- 110007. Subject: Violation of PH roster for appointments in teaching post in Swami Shraddhanand College, University of Delhi. Sir, I, Manish Sharma, Teacher-in-charge, department of History, Swami Shraddhanand College, University of Delhi, hereby bring to your notice and seek necessary action in the case of violation of 100 point PH roster for appointments in teaching post in Swami Shraddhanand College, University of Delhi, Delhi -- 36. This is for your information the I, Manish Sharma, received a letter from the Principal, Swami Shraddhanand College, datedinforming the schedule of selection committee to appoint ad-hoc Assistant Professor in the department of History. However, the college in violation of the legal norms had not made public the 200 point post based roster for appointment to teaching post. I duly protested this. (cf. letter to the principal dated, Annexure I, pagesof the file.) Following my protest, the 200 point roster was finally displayed on the college website in the second half of of 23/12/2013. (cf. 200 point roster for teaching post of SSN College for academic semester Jan-April 2014, Annexure II, pagesof the file.) In the less than 24 hours available to me, I perused the roster and found various discrepancies that were duly conveyed to the Principal, Swami Shraddhanand College in my note of dissent submitted before the commencement of the interview process. (cf. note of dissent, date, Annexure III, pagesof the file.) Of these one concerns your jurisdiction. As per the information provided in the 200 point roster displayed on the college website the college has a workload of more thanteaching posts. As per the Persons with disability (PWD) Equal Opportunity, Protection of rights and full participation Act (1996), the college should have appointed six teachers through PH roster i.e. through proper identification and advertisement of seats duly reserved for VH and OH candidates. As per the PH roster 1^st , 34^th , 67^th , 101^st , 134^th and 167^th post are to be reserved for PH candidates. Only four appointments have been made in the college on the PH roster till date, */in gross violation to the undertaking/* */given to the honourable High Court of Delhi, Swami Shraddhanand College has neither advertised not recruited the appropriate numbers of PH Assistant Professors./* Sir, this act of the Principal is in violation of the PWD Act (1996), as well as the undertaking that the University of Delhi and Swami Shraddhanand College gave to honourable High Court of Delhi on correct maintenance and compliance with the 100 point roster for teaching post for PH candidates. Given the severity of the violation I request you to take immediate cognizance of the matter and take necessary steps to ensure the following: 1.Correct and updated 100 point PH roster is displayed in public domain including the

Hi Johar, Thank you. It's working fine. Actually, I want to create a list of today's birthdays and a list of birthdays in that particular months. The formula you suggested is creating a list of today's birthdays. I understood after seeing the output. So in this formula I want a remark 'Today' and not the particular month. Secondly, I want a remark 'particular month' when the birthday is in that particular month. So the remark should be the name of that month ignoring the day and year. Is it possible? In my college, there are 3 permanent ph teachers and all of us are serious regarding this issue of roster. This email is addressed to ph. teachers of Delhi University. As all of you must have known that there are two separate rosters are operational in Delhi University. Re: [AI] [New post] Enumerative Practices of the Indian State and the Disabled: Avinash Shahi
Dear Avinash, Congrratulations for this. Indeed a good piece. I am taking the liberty of copying these comments to accessindia mailing group. Since you are researching on disability rights, I think you can further develop this essay by including the perspectives from the World Disability Report and from the Cry Survey, which inumerate a much higher proportion and rely upon a different definition of disability. I think reading about Amartya Sen's 'capability approach' would also be helpful. Besides this, we also need to see which societal perceptions, such as caste, tribe gender and religious community Etc. determine or prejudice the inumeration. This would also result in low reporting of disability in these sections. I think you have a long way to go. My best wishes are with you. Re: [AI] Accessible Captch on Indian Railway site
Yes! You are right. UGC has arranged this kind of captcha since last 2 years. I think it is much better for VI. I saw this 2 3 times while changing password, or giving the details to someone about his or her account. It is called security key. With the help of this key, they can findout, whether your account is using by you or some other person. I am not sure, but, I think Face book also give this kind of captcha sometimes. -- God examine those whom loves he the most. Time to meet up again! [AI] Disability rights groups meet Sonia, she promises to push Bill in House
So now after meeting the 'super Prime Minister' Possibilities are high that in the Febuary first fortnight RPD will be in the front pages... And probability is also high AI Convention will take place after the enactment... But as Kamalnath's press confrence details goes, only graft bill and vote on account that's it from UPA II! All in all, Feb will be a month to watch keenly. http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/disability-rights-groups-meet-sonia-she-promises-to-push-bill-in-house/ Summary During the meeting, the eight-member DRG-NPRD delegation emphasised the need for the Bill to be introduced in Parliament. A delegation of the Disabled Rights Group (DRG) and the National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday to make a concerted push for the introduction and passage of the Disability Rights Bill when Parliament is re-convened in February. During the meeting, the eight-member DRG-NPRD delegation emphasised that while the process of drafting the new law began well over four years, and various stages had been gone through, the Bill is yet to be introduced in Parliament. In response, Sonia Gandhi assured the delegation of her party’s full support and said she would personally take up the matter with the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kamal Nath so that the enactment of the Bill is prioritised on the agenda when Parliament reconvenes next month. The members of the delegation which called upon Sonia Gandhi were Javed Abidi (Convener, DRG), Muralidharan (Secretary, NPRD), Merry Barua (Action for Autism), Syamala Gidugu (AADI), Neelam Jolly (VISHWAS), Radhika Alkazi (Aarth-Aastha), George Abraham (Score) and Zorin Singha and A S Narayanan (National Association for the Deaf). The DRG and the NPRD, in an attempt to build political will for the passage of the Bill, have already met Vice President Hamid Ansari, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley. All these leaders have assured support for speedy enactment of the disability rights legislation. -- Avinash Shahi M.Phil Research Scholar Centre for The Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Time to meet up again! Re: [AI] Convention update
Friends It is very essential to register online and send the amountfor registration. On our part we have made all efforts to bring down the registration charge as requested by members. Now, we have to make the arrangements we need to know the number and also the money to do the needful. There is considerable effort to organise the convention and it is imperative that we also get the support to make it happen. At both the ends, online registration and payment towards the registration is extremely poor. I would urge all delegates both from in and around Delhi and outstation delegates to do the needful and join the convention in large numbers.
