 Hello Bhavaniji,

 Very useful struggle for all.

I wish you needed some help in Mumbai. But still i will try to find
 someone from Delhi.

IRCTC accessibility issue is very major and troubling. You can also
put forward that VIs need to go to ticket windows physically to book
tickets if they have to avail concessions. Resultantly, increasing
 their inconvinience.

Re: [AI] Windows 8 or Windows 7?

2014-05-30 Thread Bhavya shah
Hi.
You can go for any of the two versions you mentioned i.e. 7 8.
If you have more than 4 gb of RAM and all the drivers compatible with
64 bit go for 64 bit, otherwise no point going for 64 bit instead of
32 bit.
Hope that helps.

Can't agree anymore with the author
Dr Saibaba must be freed immidiately.
 What do you say friends?
A Delhi University teacher, forced into solitary confi nement in an
unda cell (egg cell), has been charged with conspiring to wage war
on the state. Incredible, but there seems to be no limit to which the
powers that be can stoop - accusing a wheelchair-bound man of seeking
to bring down the great Indian state!
 http://www.epw.in/commentary/arrested-story.html
P K Vijayan (pk.vija...@gmail.com) teaches English literature at Hindu
 College, University of Delhi.

I want to tell you a story, of a little man, if I can; his name was -
well, his name - we will come to it shortly. This little man was born
into a wretchedly poor peasant family that lived on the outskirts of a
little known village, with the out-castes and untouchables. This
little man's father had chosen to live with the marginal and the
excluded, as a mark of solidarity with them - and this was motivated
simply by an instinctive sense of justice, since the little man's
father was not even literate, let alone politically educated.

So the little man grew up amongst the sweepers and the scavengers,
with hunger and deprivation as bosom companions to him and his
siblings. Then, when he was barely five years old, he was afflicted
with polio in both his legs, as a result of which he almost died from
lack of medical facilities. But the little man's father managed to
stave off his death, by running from pillar to post, from every doctor
to every dispensary that held out hope, till the fast-spreading
disease was finally checked; nevertheless, the little man lost the use
of both his legs completely from the disease.

This did not deter the little man or his father. He was enrolled in a
mission school, where he learned to read and write and consumed
everything he read with rapacious delight. Reading by the light of
street lamps, dragging himself on his elbows and hands on the dirt
roads of his village, from home to school, eating one meal in two days
sometimes, the little man delighted in the world of books, and forgot
about his own deprived and depraved one, for the hours that he was
lost in them. The father meanwhile, took the little man wherever he
could, showing him as much of the world as he could from the
handlebars of his bicycle, obdurately refusing to accept that his
son's condition would limit his mobility. The little man thus grew up
with a deep wanderlust and an indomitable will to overcome the
 limitations of his condition.

Which is how the little man, who was now no longer little but a
full-grown, popular and well-liked young man, despite his 90%
disability, went on to complete his school, pre-university and
undergraduate degrees with flying colours, largely on the dint of
scholarships and fellowships earned through sheer academic excellence.
And as this young man grew into maturity, he also saw the colours and
prejudices of the world around him, and learnt of its profound
inequalities and injustices, and of the many, many crores of people
who were systemically and systematically disadvantaged from birth - if
not in medical terms like him, then in social and economic terms, very
much like him, and in fact, much worse off than him.

So it was that when he moved to the big city of Hyderabad for his
Master's degree, he was already filled with a steely resolve to fight
these injustices with the same never-say-never spirit with which he
had fought, and continued to fight, his own debilitating
circumstances. This is how the young man, by the time he completed his
Master's degree, had become an accomplished, respected and hugely
popular scholar and political activist. But the young man wanted to
see more, to learn more, to do more - so he gave up the familiar
terrain and people and tongues of Hyderabad, and moved to Delhi, with
his newly married wife. Struggling to battle the harsh and callous
conditions of the bigger city, coping with unfamiliarity and
unemployment and prejudice and loneliness, this man, against his
better instincts, against the enormous demands placed on him mentally
and physically and financially, nevertheless stayed on and moved from
job to job till he was finally appointed as a lecturer in a Delhi
 University college.

This man is now a scholar and teacher of international standing and
repute. He completed his doctoral degree, and has travelled
 extensively,

Re: [AI] suggestions required for accessible treadmill

2014-05-30 Thread Shadab Husain
Hi Mukeshji, were you able to get an accessible treadmill? To keep
myself fit, I walk for around two hours, jog behind my rickshaw and
cycle for twenty minutes. Being blind we don't lead such an active
life, which is more dangerous than we think.

PS How you can look young and dashing

Can I be cruel with you for a moment?

You're dull, sick, depressed. Yep, you're. Don't deny it.

And you're so because you spend huge time tinkering with tablets.
Because you work in artificially warm and cool closets. Because you
rarely do any physical activity. And because you eat junk.

No surprise you often feel low energy and get irritated soon. Your
modern-day lifestyle might have also triggered any disease in your
body putting you on medication.

Right?

The bad news is that if you continue your ways, you will become
sicker. And medicines aren't going to completely cure you.

Want to know why?

Because your modern environment is tempting you to live a life you
aren't meant for.

Our modern environment, says William R. Leonard, professor of
anthropology, Northwestern University, has been characterized as
'obseogenic' -- that is, providing abundant food energy, while
requiring little work or activity to produce that energy.

The good news?

[AI] My Latest blogpost: Diminishing vision and disappearing space

2014-05-30 Thread Subramani L
   Diminishing vision and disappearing space

It was the same street, same row of buildings on either side. I was
sure that the rickshaw puller would get a sadistic pleasure by
swerving dangerously close to the startled pedestrian. And the
pedestrian must weigh the danger of standing unperturbed by the
veering three-wheeler or move away to confront the stray cow bounded
in his direction.

Yes, it's not that easy to traverse the congested streets of south
Indian cities, but people here are so used to the place that they make
walking in these streets an art.

Not so long ago, I was one of the practitioners of this art, trying to
time my jump to stay away from the speeding vehicle or panicking stray
animal. Well...as long as I could see.

It's not just challenging, but suicidal if I try practicing that art
as a blind man. After all, traffic related injuries and deaths are
increasing each year in cities like Bangalore and Chennai and the
mishaps almost always involve people with perfect vision.

Forget about confronting chaos, but even a space with absolutely no
movement or obstacle would be challenging for a person who had to
undergo gradual vision loss. And herein lies the distinction between
those who never had to use their vision before to perceive physical
space around them and those who lose it over a period of time...

 Hello,
According to me, oral exams are not the way to go forward.
And yes, the word leniency is totally unacceptable to me.
You can't develop yourself in a skill based subject like science/
finance/ maths if you are dealt with leniency.
We should stress on reasonable accommodations i.e. talking
calculators, tools to describe graphs/ accessible equation editors but
 not leniency at all.
P.s: didn't want to hurt anybody, sharing my own opinion from my past
 experiences.
 Thanks,
 Ajay

Re: [AI] How do you respond? Show leniency to visually impaired students, allow oral exams

2014-05-30 Thread avinash shahi
So here is members are of one opinion that is, technology holds the key.

I also think technology certainly unlocks many restrictions, but I'm
equally concerned about dearth of technology literacy among blind
people in particular who prefer to speak and write in Hindi and in
other regional languages. Further, to run technological tools one
needs electricity round the clock, and according to one figure given
by BBC Hindi last week, 40 Crores Indians have never seen electricity
in their homes. Situation is very complex, you know.
NGOs who impart computer training are only catering to urban-based
tranees and they are least concerned about huge aspiring talented boys
and girls reside in the countryside who if given proper training can
develop softwares which can turn the table for India in the
screen-reading softwares market.

Now who will take the innitiative? I have a suggestion for NGOs
working in the field of providing better technology to blind people in
India. many big corporates and other companies are mandated to spend 2
per cent of their net worth on Corporate Social Responsibility. Why
not these NGOs prepare a proposal with an objective to reach to those
who are not in Metros? many research indicate CSR is going to be spent
on education for empowering less-privileged sections hugely... So dig
in your heel and cash in this opportunity which UPA has given us in
its legacy...

 Hello,
According to me, oral exams are not the way to go forward.
 Thanks,
 Ajay

You can go for any of the two versions you mentioned i.e. 7 8.
If you have more than 4 gb of RAM and all the drivers compatible with

Subject: Re: [AI] Managing information overload / Reading faster with Jaws

Shadab Bhaiya,

I am using Jaws at 80 to 85% rate with low volume and headphone to
deal with such urgencies. However, if I have time, then I do not mind
slowing down to 75%. Ignore the email totally if you have crossed this
limit already. I don't know how well these tips would match in your
situation, but for quicker reading of my legal documents, I adopt
following tips:

1. I use that feature of Jaws wherein you can instruct the Jaws to use
pause after a line. This way, even if my speed is increased and the
word flow is tremendous, with those extra little pauses, I get certain
seconds to adjust the Jaws vs brain battle.

2. If I know that I am looking for particular things in a document,
then I use either the Jaws Scheme feature with Sound alerts on, or the
skim reading feature, so that the figuring out process is more faster
and smoother.

3. If the matter is such wherein every word requires care, then I slow
down to 65% roughly to avoid mistakes.

4. I use the quick key navigation or the say all feature of Jaws in
Word to read by paragraphs. So that the key presses are lesser as
against the traditional way of reading.

5. Constant reading requires break of few seconds in the middle. Or it
can be adjusted by those blanks in the document if the drafting of the
document is in your hand. Of course, remove them when it is to be sent
out to the prospective reader.

Enough it is, first see if it matches your situation, then we can
continue. And party, there is a whole lot of that which is pending
including bhabhi ke haath ka khana. So lets discuss that offline.

This has been our understanding so far. Now that the NVDA itself comes
bundled with Eloquence, shouldn't we treat it something official? At least,

NVDA 2014.2 is packaged with with Eloquence by default. We really don't know

the intricacies and the latest developments. What we know for long is that
Eloquence is owned by the FreedomScientific, but there seem to be
interesting moves on this front in the recent past. Can anybody closely
involved with the NVDA development shed some light on thisc ' ; please?
