2015-12-11 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
So, let us walk equipped with Le chal shoes, smart stick or ausion, either of
the two and GPS enabled smart phone and all.

But, I wonder, will it do away with someone's helping hand, ever?

I recall fondly my father's, or my mother's every ready and warmly assisting
hands holding my hand on many a path of llife, or yearn for my wife's delicate
hand, guiding me on roads, or for that matter any other friends' extended arms
urdging me on, as I am sure every totally blind must cherish.

Please respond to Reece Dunn privately...
There has also been some disturbing news and substantiated theories
about the cause of inactivity of the ESpeak project in the last seven
months, most likely its lead developer, Jonnathan Dummington's death.
I may forward the original mail which shared this theory and places
from where he had acquired the information, but in short, the ESpeak
project is probably going to change into the hands of some other
worthy community contributors.

Hi All,

I would like those interested to answer some questions about the voice
quality within eSpeak to get an idea of what needs to be improved.

When answering these, I would appreciate instead of answering "poor",
"rubbish", etc. trying to articulate what and why you answered in a given
way, for example "the female voices sound like higher pitch versions of
the

male voice, so don't sound like they are being spoken by a woman".

1. What language(s) are you using?

2. How well do the pronunciations match your expectations of that voice

Subject: Re: [AI] Anybody using Ausion?

Hi Aaruni,

The Ausion is similar to the K-sonar though at a fraction of the cost. It
is
primarily meant for above chest level obstacles. You hold the device in
your
hand and scan your environment. I am planning to order it for testing. I
have
the IIT device. Again, you need to scan your environment and you get
tactile
feedback in terms of different vibration patterns based on distance. In
most
tactile based systems, you do not get a sense of texture. You may get this
in
the ausion and in the K-Sonar because they support continuous scanning and
can
better render texture information using sound.

The question though is what do you mean by better mobility? If it is
detecting
drop offs and steps, there appears to be nothing to match the white cane.
The
EyeCane may have a fighting chance but I do not know if it is commercially
available. If you navigate in office spaces, then the smart cane and the
ausion
may work just as well.

The thing with any aid using ultrasound is that it does not answer the
question
"what." You know something is there but you need to build a database of
sound
patterns to identify the obstacle. However, if you take something like the
vOICe, it will tell you what you are looking at but it is not particularly
good
at rendering distance information. As of this writing, you need to combine
sensory substitution devices and ultrasound based devices for the best
mobility
experience. For the vOICe, you could use your Android phone or grab a
dedicated
unit from
http://www.after-sight.com/

This is probably more than you wanted to know but mobility aides are an
interest
of mine and something that I am exploring actively.

The Ausion is similar to the K-sonar though at a fraction of the cost. It is
primarily meant for above chest level obstacles. You hold the device in your
hand and scan your environment. I am planning to order it for testing. I have
the IIT device. Again, you need to scan your environment and you get tactile
feedback in terms of different vibration patterns based on distance. In most
tactile based systems, you do not get a sense of texture. You may get this in
the ausion and in the K-Sonar because they support continuous scanning and can
better render texture information using sound.

The question though is what do you mean by better mobility? If it is detecting
drop offs and steps, there appears to be nothing to match the white cane. The
EyeCane may have a fighting chance but I do not know if it is commercially
available. If you navigate in office spaces, then the smart cane and the ausion
may work just as well.

The thing with any aid using ultrasound is that it does not answer the question
"what." You know something is there but you need to build a database of sound
patterns to identify the obstacle. However, if you take something like the
vOICe, it will tell you what you are looking at but it is not particularly good
at rendering distance information. As of this writing, you need to combine
sensory substitution devices and ultrasound based devices for the best mobility
experience. For the vOICe, you could use your Android phone or grab a dedicated
unit from
http://www.after-sight.com/

This is probably more than you wanted to know but mobility aides are an interest
of mine and something that I am exploring actively.

Pranav

Re: [AI] Anybody using Ausion?

2015-12-11 Thread raaju
hello, what comes in my mind whenever I hear "indoor" is about walking in
house, weather it is huge or small, in hotels, in malls, in cinema halls,
etc. if you develop your echo location ability, you no longer need any such
device. The regular natural device like walls, doors, your footsteps, your
tongue clicks whenever needed, etc will help you moving around. So I
recommend instead of such expensive device, try to practice echo locating.

Hello all. I would like to hear experiences about this device and also if
any NGO is promoting this product. I want to use an electronic device for
better mobility. Can we get rid of the walking stick specially indoors with
the help of Ausion.
I am also interested in learning about real life experience from those
using the electronic stick invented by IIT Delhi.

Subject: [AI] Talking photo frames

Friends
Do they exist?

I mean a photo frame fitted with a chip to play the voice of the person in
photo upon touching the frame anywhere?

It would really give us the sense of the person in photo..

If it is not there, I think it is very easy to make such a frame and I will
have it made.

Would welcome ideas on availability or manufacture of such a contrivance.

Re: [AI] Talking photo frames

2015-12-11 Thread Amar Jain
Dear Rajesh Sir,

My response is slightly different from what you are actually wanting.
but when I wanted to present a photo frame to my dad with my and his
photo and a song recorded in my voice "yeh toh sach hai ke bhagvan
hai", I got to know about photo frames in which I could record voice
notes on every photo.

>From the point of view of this topic, the only difficulty which
remains in such cases is to reach to that particular photo in the
absence of any speech assistance.

I don't know if there are Bluetooth enabled photo frames which can be
controlled using an app installed in the smartphone which can be good
workaround.

Hi,
Sidnc,
Reece Dunn's e-mail address is mscl...@googlemail.com
My apologies, now I realize remembering that Reece had sent out that
survey to the list not from his own e-mail id.
Anyways, there you go and you all ESpeak users are strongly encouraged
to send in their responses to Reece.
Thanks.

Someone was suggesting an analogy between MK Gandhi's 'harijan' and
Modi's 'divyang'! So Gandhi had special love for 'harijan' and our PM
has for 'divyang'. Perhaps Disability sector will soon have Kanshiram
and Mayawati in the days to come, smiles.

I was busy in some work, so wasn't checking my inbox.
Such an agreement will bring disaster upon all the marginalized

India is a welfare state, and so the implementation of any such

All such extreme capitalist steps need to be opposed.

Re: [AI] Fwd: eSpeak Voice Quality Survey

2015-12-11 Thread sidnc1986_gmail
Thanks a ton! I'm currently involved in a project which calls for efficient
TTS for regional languages. Starting with Marathi and Hindi as our choice,
we will have a good set of feedback for ESpeak developers. With such eager
developers working on ESpeak, I am quite sure fixes will come in fast.

By the way, I'm also looking to get involved into addressing basic
touch-screen phone accessibility. Not in terms of reinventing the wheel but
suplimenting whatever is out there to improve productivity using such
devices. I'll follow this email with that as well.

Siddhant

Hi,
Sidnc,
Reece Dunn's e-mail address is mscl...@googlemail.com
My apologies, now I realize remembering that Reece had sent out that
survey to the list not from his own e-mail id.
Anyways, there you go and you all ESpeak users are strongly encouraged
to send in their responses to Reece.
Thanks.

Hi,

You may want to send in your response to Reece Dunn himself, who is
not present on Access India.
Let me know if you require his e-mail address (should be present in
the initial forwarded mail) or would like me to forward your survey

Thanks.

Thanks.
