I agree Avinash, you should definetly ask him this question, you have
every right to do so.
My interpretation is that in India, anything that is treated as divine
gains lot of respect in society.
So, may be PM wanted to use this word to remove the prejudices and
stereotypes which people have for the disabled.

No, I think sustained discussion on the 'divyang' is warranted in
India. The prime Minister needs to make us understand the rationale
behind the usage of 'divyang'. If I'm not wrong the usage
'differently-abled' was first used by an US atlantic magazine in 1983
and it was resisted in US but this usage acquired prominence in the
third-world countries. The media play an important role in
mainstreaming disability terminologies in the popular culture; Indian
media is also equally responsible for non-responsible reporting of
disability usage. There is a handbook published by Chicago University
about guidelines for media on disability reportage however we have
nothing of such sort in India. Indian mythological texts depicted
disabled people as sinners who committed crimes in their previous
birth. However if the prime minister things we are 'divyang' then its
a great departure from the past. Therefore it is imperative for Mr
Modi to enlighten us why he things we are 'divyang'. Lets not discuss
issues abstractly, lets ask questions and nurture a culture of
engaging substantially with the burning issues of the day. Why only
disabled people are 'specially-abled' why not Mr Modi who's charisma
led to BJP's thumping majority at the Centre. If I hhappen to meet
Modi anytime soon I'd ask him why he things we are 'divyang'.

it's shocking but not absolutely. in every religious prescriptions,
disability has been treated as either a mark of sin or the punishment
of god and disabled people are considered not worthy of being chosen
as heir and so forth. so, a retrogressive organisation like the IS,

Re: [AI] Islamic State says kill children with disabilities: Reports

2015-12-15 Thread avinash shahi
Exactly, the human-race is replete with such gory details where
disabled people were either incarcerated or were brutally killed by
the racist regimes. The Islamic State also carries a set of medieval
beliefs that those who are unable to contribute in the mission and the
vision of the IS, deserve death.

The Islamic State has issued a fatwa asking its members to kill

 http://www.hindustantimes.com/world/kill-all-children-with-down-s-syndrome-isis-sharia-judge/story-qWwH210IbqZN47CEBynKjM.html

The IS has already executed 38 babies and children who were suffering
from various deformities, the activist group said on its social media
platforms. The victims range from ages of one week to three months.

According to several news reports, the oral fatwa was issued by Abu
Said Aljazrawi, one of Islamic States’ Sharia judges. “We stand by
what we published on our page, every word of it,” a blogger at Mosul
 Eye told Hindustan Times.

“They were killed by either lethal injection or suffocation. Some of
those killings took place in Syria and Mosul,” the Facebook post
 published by Mosul Eye claimed.

“...you don’t know how we live! It’s severe (sic) life. ISIL are
savage gangs...inhuman and terrorists...they already killed their
members whom can’t be treated medically,” Omar Aliraqi, a resident of
Mosul, replied to the post on Facebook.

Some Facebook users likened the act to those by Nazis, who murdered
disabled children as it was a “burden on the state”.

“I have just shed tears for these babies. I have two children with
special needs, my heart is breaking. They are worse than the Nazis,”
Jane Oakley, a British woman posted on Facebook.

According to WebMD, Down syndrome is a set of physical and mental
traits caused by a gene problem that happens before birth. Children
who have Down syndrome tend to have certain features, such as a flat
face and a short neck. They also have some degree of intellectual
disability. This varies from person to person. But in most cases it is
 mild to moderate.

[AI] Health Nutrients for Healthy Eyes!

2015-12-15 Thread shraddha edke
Health Nutrients for Healthy Eyes

The wonders of nature reveal themselves through the eyes of the
beholder. This essential part of the body, therefore, demands
protection and care throughout your life. Even a slight blemish to the
eye should not be neglected because over a period of time minor
irritants in the eyes can turn into chronic troubles.

For instance, one of the cause of damage to the eye is light-induced
lipid peroxidation. Simply put, when light enters the lens, it reacts
with lipids present in it generating free radicals that cause damage
to the eyes. There are several other eye disorders that arise due to
the onslaught of free radicals. And there are several others that are
brought on due to the deficiency of essential nutrients in the diet.
 •
Vitamin A: This acts as antioxidant that can scavenge the
free-radicals formed within the eyes. It plays a major role in the
cells of the eye that are sensitive to dim light and is also necessary
for the health of mucous membranes that line the eyelid. Consumption
of vitamin A in the diet should be 15 mg daily.

•
Vitamin B2: This vitamin acts as coenzyme in various redox reactions
including the prevention of free radicals, thus acting as an
antioxidant. The consumption of vitamin B2 in the diet should be
0.3-1.0 mg per day.

•
Vitamin E: It is an antioxidant whose deficiency leads to inflamed
eyelids and sensitivity to light. The consumption of this vitamin in
the diet should be 400-800 IU everyday.

•
Vitamin C: This also acts as antioxidant that can scavenge the
free-radicals in the eye. The daily intake of vitamin C in the diet
should be 2000-3000 mg.

•
b-carotene: This pigment acts as an antioxidant and its consumption in
the diet should be 25,000 IU daily.

•
Zinc and selenium: Zinc along with the enzyme retinal dehydrogenase
catalyzes the conversion of inactive retinol into its active form,
thus forming active antioxidants. Selenium is essential for the
formation of selenoproteins like glutathione peroxidase within the
lens of the eye. Glutathione peroxidase acts as an antioxidant that
also prevents the formation of free radicals that damage the eye lens.
The daily intake of zinc and selenium should be 25 mg respectively.

•
Eggs: Eggs are a good source of vitamins mainly vitamin A (retinol)
and vitamin B2 (riboflavin). They also contain a high amount of the
essential pigments lutein and zeaxanthin. Vitamin A and pigments act
as antioxidants and prevent the formation of free radicals that can
damage the eye. Lutein and zeaxanthin are yellow pigments that provide
the yellow colour to egg yolk. They absorb the damaging blue
wavelengths of light from sun that enters the eye.

•
Carrots: Carrot juice is among the richest sources of vitamin A
(thiamine). It also consists of the pigment b-carotene and retinol.
This increases the level of antioxidants which then prevent the
formation of free radicals.

•
Spinach: Spinach consists of vitamins like vitamin A retinol and
vitamin C (ascorbic acid). It has a high amount of b-carotene pigment
and also a rich source of antioxidants (vitamin A, vitamin C,
b-carotene and lutein).

•
Fortified cereals: Cereals like milk powder fortified with vitamins
and minerals contain vitamins including vitamin A retinol, vitamin E
(tocopherol), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), minerals like zinc and lutein
pigment. Vitamin A and E are antioxidants which prevent the formation
of free radicals. Vitamin B2 acts as coenzyme in various redox
reactions including the prevention of free radicals, thus acting as
antioxidant.

•
Orange: Orange in the form of raw fruit is rich in the pigment
zeaxanthin, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and vitamin A. But the juice of
orange has high amounts of vitamin C as compared to raw orange.

•
Milk and dairy products: Dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt,
etc. are rich sources of vitamin A, vitamin B2, minerals like zinc and
amino acid like taurine. Among buffalo, cow and goat milk, goat milk
is the highest source of taurine. Taurine is the free amino acid found
in the retina of the eyes, thus maintaining the retina and eye health.

•
Seafoods: Seafoods including oysters Late rich sources of minerals
like selenium and zinc. Zinc along with the enzyme retinal

Re: [AI] Treat Acid victims as disabled :Supreme Court

2015-12-15 Thread SC Vashishth
I feel the judgement in present form is un-implementable, unless changes
are made to the relevant laws/policies. I remember some time back, Hon'ble
Supreme Court also passed a direction about giving job reservations to
Transgender community as OBC and make provisions for adding special public
toilets for them as they had inhibitions using the male and female toilets
and also make changes to all forms etc to add Others with Mr./Ms. That has
laregley been implemented and we have seen in recent past, the transgenders
becoming police inspectors and Mayors.

It would have been easy to implement the addition of Acid Attack survivors
in the OBC Quota than in Disability Quota due to obvious reasons. However,
there wouldn't be any problem if the disability caused by the accident
falls in the present three categories i.e. visual/ physical or hearing!

Re: [AI] Treat Acid victims as disabled :Supreme Court

2015-12-15 Thread Nirmal Verma
Dear friends

Have you all met with any acid attack victim. Most of them have been
attacked on face and their eyes affected. Some of them have their other
body parts affected as well.

Their number is not vast and inclusion of these people in disability quota
should not affect any.
Feel the plight of those girls who have been forced to keep their faces
hidden always under veil.

[AI] Nominate Accessible Innovations

2015-12-15 Thread Ramya Venkitesh
Hope you all are doing well. I wanted to share with you a new initiative of
BarrierBreak - Global Elevate Award .

We believe that there is innovation that is happening in the accessibility &
assistive technology domain, but most of the time the awareness and the
market reach of the solutions is limited. Also accessible solutions can
create great impact if they go beyond the geographies and there are so many
products that have helped people with disabilities in multiple countries
though the initial need might have been by a few countries. It isn't about
the US, India, UK but these solutions need to be Internationally known.

Therefore, the Global Elevate Award would like to recognize accessible
innovations that meet the 3 basic criteria's:

* Does the solution impact people with disabilities or senior
citizens?

* Is it a technology solution irrespective of whether it is a
product or a service? When we look at technology it can be a software, a
hardware, a wearable, a mobile app!

* Was the solution launched between 1st October, 2014 & 30th
October, 2015.

We would be awarding accessible solutions and not organizations. This will
be a live repository of the innovations, so we hope to spread awareness and
help reach the solutions to the people who really need them. So please do
nominate accessible products or solutions for the Global Elevate Award
 .

Another personal request is to share the information of the Global Elevate
Award, so that we can create an ecosystem of accessible innovation together.

Warm Regards

Ramya

Hi Anirban,

Yes the device can be used without the cane. The result that you get from
the
device is dependent on where you point it and not on if a cane is attached
to
it. I frequently detach the device and carry it with me without the cane.

[AI] Want to improve Android experience. Inputs needed.

2015-12-15 Thread sidnc1986_gmail
Hi all,
Hardware keyboards although seem history, are still out there in the market.
Even for sighted users, hardware keyboards are equivalent to improved
productivity. Touch-screen smart phones affect our efficiency in expressing and
interacting freely with the device. For those who have similar feeling that
even their efficiency in using today's touch-screen smart phones has gone down
against using Nokia like phones (accessible as well as keyboard input based),
request you to fill the survey that I'm sharing.
Here is the link:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/146PGgQZ4THa9f0sf8-H64-VM7zkdstqzRvTXl1akTq4/viewform?c=0=1

I’m very much keen on addressing this gap. Need to get an idea on whether most
of you have the same need.

complete irradication, as you have mentioned, would cause tens and
thousands to become disabled. therefore, to save the poor kids, let's
not propagate a way which would render tens and thousands disabled.

 http://www.hindustantimes.com/world/kill-all-children-with-down-s-syndrome-isis-sharia-judge/story-qWwH210IbqZN47CEBynKjM.html

The IS has already executed 38 babies and children who were
 suffering
from various deformities, the activist group said on its social
 media

ISIL are
savage gangs...inhuman and terrorists...they already killed their
members whom can’t be treated medically,” Omar Aliraqi, a resident
 of
Mosul, replied to the post on Facebook.

But in most cases it
 is
 mild to moderate.

Re: [AI] Treat Acid victims as disabled :Supreme Court

2015-12-15 Thread SC Vashishth
Nirmal, there is no one on this list who will not empathise with the cause
or not support the acid attack survivors. All we discussed is legal
technicalities in implementing a judgement. If any survivor has lost her
eyes, she gets covered under the visual disability for the disability law
doesn't differentiate on the etiology of disability. However, if that is
not the case, there would be problems!

[AI] May be of interest: Sundar Pichai speaks on the idea behind Google

2015-12-15 Thread avinash shahi
Google’s Chennai-born CEO Sundar Pichai said on Wednesday revealed the
inspiration behind his joining the tech giant. “What inspired me to
join Google was the fact that Google search worked the same whether
you were a Stanford professor or a poor kid in a small Indian city.”
he said.

“A lot of what today is about is how we build products for the next
billion Indian users yet to come online,” Pichai said while delivering
a keynote address at the Google for India event in New Delhi.

Pichai is in India along with eight Google vice-presidents, including
those for Search, YouTube, Maps, and Android among others.

He elaborated on the main aspects to Google’s approach: “Bringing
access to people. Everything else is meaningless without that. Make
sure our products are working for them in a meaningful way when people
come online, we don’t want them to just consume, we want them to add
their voice to it”.

Pichai, who became Google’s top boss in August after the company
became part of a larger firm known as Alphabet Inc, is scheduled to
meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley
and telecommunications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad later in the day,
sources told Hindustan Times.

He will also interact with students at an event at the Capital’s Sri
Ram College of Commerce on Thursday.

Google wants to connect over a billion people in India to the internet
through programs like Project Loon, a network of high-altitude,
internet-beaming balloons, that has ruffled regulatory feathers in the
country.

Pichai had met PM Modi in September during the latter’s visit to the
Silicon Valley. Since then the company has announced a number of
India-specific initiatives like providing free WiFi at 500 railway
stations in the country, letting users type in 11 Indian languages on
their phones and allowing them to download YouTube videos and watch
them offline.

Last year, Pichai visited India to launch Android One, a program in
which the world’s largest search engine partnered with Indian handset
makers Spice, Micromax and Karbonn (and later Lava) to sell low-cost
$100 devices that ran the latest version of Android.

The Android One phones supported seven Indian languages out of the
box, including for dictation and voice commands. They also feature
local news publications and magazines in the Google Play Newsstand.

Android One eventually rolled out in 11 countries, but it never really
took off. Google sold about three million Android One phones in all
but negligible compared to the growth of Android around the world.
Google, however, is tight-lipped about plans to reboot Android One.

The Mountain View-based company has also been silent on net
neutrality, a polarising issue that has been the subject of fierce
debate in India this year. Google supports net neutrality in the
United States but it has not said that publicly in India.

A report in the Economic Times said that the company was planning to
roll out its own Free Basics-like zero-rated service in India but put
on the back-burner after seeing the backlash against Facebook’s
Internet.org.

The 43-year-old alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology,
Kharagpur, is the latest technology leader to visit India over the
last 12 months after Alibaba’s chairperson Jack Ma, Facebook founder
Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella
