Subject: [Bulk] [AI] To introduce myself to the AccessIndia community

Hello to everyone here at the Access India forum.

I'm a visually impaired person with an MPhil in mathematics, and I've been
teaching mathematics as a lecturer at a mainstream college in the
provincial government's department of higher education department. I've
also been a member of the RNIB from 2004 to 2006.

I've also been a Hadley School for the Blind student since Nov. 2004 and
have so far completed courses in English, the Nemeth Code, word
processing, the Internet basics; nowadays I'm pursuing a course on the
Unified English Braille (UEB) and chess!

Though I know braille and am familiar with JAWS and MAGic, in my teaching
of mathematics [ I've been for the last few years teaching analysis and
functional analysis to the BS in Mathematics students.] I mostly rely on
my residual vision: I'm able to read the inkprint and write using my
eyesight, though from a distance of hardly six inches and that too not in
the sunlight!

My schooling started at a local school for sighted children in 1986, where
I stayed for less than a year before being admitted to my local school for
the blind in 1987, and I stayed at that school till 1994, when I passed my
matriculation examination and joined college [It was the same college
where I'm teaching now.] Even during my studies at that school for the
blind, I remained in touch with the inkprint reading and writing (entirely
on my own!) and so was able to start college without having to use braille
or audio.

At college, I opted for mathematics, statistics, and economics as my
intermediate-level subject combination, but our mathematics education at
the school for the blind was extremely poor! My eyesight problem and poor
financial family background [My father worked as a truck driver.] meant
that I had to mostly do without any tutorial support; the result was that
in my Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) I could manage to score
only 62%.

Although I kept myself in touch with inkprint right through my blind
school years, my handwriting was still too slow and child-like even when I
joined college, resulting in my compulsion to rely on a sighted person to
write my exam papers for me, which is a not-so-easy task in mathematical
subjects.

I had to engage a sighted person as a writer in my HSSC, 2-year B.Sc., and
2-year M.Sc. exams. It was only in my MPhil coursework that I could muster
enough confidence in my handwriting to write my own exam papers. The
difference was that, unlike my previous board and university examinations
which had all been under an annual system and marked externally, the MPhil
papers were set and marked by the very instructor who was teaching the
course.

I also started learning JAWS scripting back in 2005 but then couldn't hold
on to it due to one reason or the other. Nowadays, I'm learning the Python
programming language from a video course taught by a Prof. John Guttag
back in 2011 and now available at the MIT Open CourseWare (OCW) website.

Although I did study one semester of M.Sc. in Computer Science back in
1999, I would still rate my computer experties at the beginner's level (or
thereabouts). I feel that I started on so many things without being to
stick to anything in particular.

I post my question to a webstie called Stack Exchange, particularly on the
Mathematics Stack Exchange. Here's the link to my MSE profile.

http://math.stackexchange.com/users/59734/saaqib-mahmuud

I occasionally post on Facebook as well and have liked the NDTV Facebook
page, as well as that of Burkha Dutt. BBC Urdu and Hindi are both my
favorites (perhaps the latter more than the former); I also would like to
be able to access Doordarshan Urdu.

I've also been a reader of the Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind from
Aug. 2001 till Nov. 2009, when they stopped their braille edition.

Due to my rather limited Internet bandwidth, the live video streaming is
often not good enough; so I wish that NDTV 24 7, NDTV India, and
Doordarshan each could also start a live audio stream, just like the live
audio streams of Dunya News TV, a Pakistani channel. Would anyone here
also like to concur with me on this point?

I think I've introduced myself quite thoroughly (a little too thoroughly,
I'm afraid). Anyway, should anybody like to get in touch with me, here's
my contact information.

Mobile Phone Number: 0092-346-952-7638
Number for WhatsApp: 0092-334-541-7958
E-mail: saaqib1...@yahoo.co.in

I can also give out my postal (or geographical) address, should anybody
want it.

I would be glad to socialise with members

Dear Friends,

I am facing a problem, when I open a folder, then it says this folder is not
responding, suppose I open document, then it says "document is not
responding", after 3-4 minutes, it works automatically, in between, I try to
open any folder, then it says "explore.exe the remote procedure call failed

Another query, is there any short cut to open organize toolbar.

Looking for your positive response.

Thank you

Just try to turn off the details pane and preview pain in the layout submenu.
Your problem should most probably be solved if this is a JAWS specific problem.
Just see whether you are encountering the same issue after turning off the JAWS
also?

Dare to Dream Big

DARE TO DREAM BIG

Changing one life in a lifetime is called an achievement. What if someone
brings a change to a thousand lives at a time?

It was a pleasant summer evening. The sun was at the horizon ready to bid
goodbye. The purple hue of the evening sky, the dark silhouette of the tall
trees, dancing in the evening breeze and the dark shadows of the birds
flying back towards their nest before nightfall, seemed like a beautiful
masterpiece of art - the only difference being this was an art by Mother
Nature herself.
Below the serene evening sky, was the bustling Delhi Haat - a place full of
life, laughter and fun where old and young all seemed to enjoy alike. The
hustle-bustle of people, the smell of food varieties, the bright lights and
the colourful displays all around cast a festive atmosphere. I could not
think of a better place to spend the evening with my family.
My love for Delhi Haat dates back to the good old college days when I had
moved to the capital to gain a degree in Commerce. It has been a long
journey since then, a journey where I had slowly fallen in love with the
city. Now, after 13 years I continue to stay here with my husband and my
dear daughter. It is for sure a contended and peaceful life, though I am
still in search of my purpose in life and a better job and financial
stability. Sometimes, I think that I have lost that fire within, which
forces people to venture out of their boundaries to strive and carve a dream
life for themselves and their loved ones. I think I have got used to a
mundane way of leading life, staying in the confined boundaries that I have
set for myself.

My thoughts were interrupted as my eyes focused on a familiar face in the
crowd. The beautiful face of my good, old college friend 'Veena'. I waged my
way through the crowd and called out, "Veena".
The lady turned back and said, "Who?"
I said, "You have to guess."
She said, "Shailika."
My eyes were filled with tears. Veena was able to recognize me and her voice
shared the same excitement as mine.

It had been nearly 13 years when we had last met on the final day of our
college. Running into each other after a decade was a wonderful serendipity.
We seated ourselves. I introduced my family to her and she told me about her
husband. Slowly our conversation proceeded further. There was a lot to catch
up. My daughter was interrupting us but then my dear husband, who understood
my emotions at that time, took good care of her.
Across the course of our talks I came to know that Veena was working as a
Deputy Manager in one of the most prestigious PSUs in Delhi. She was in the
human resource department and was juggling between her professional and
personal life just like any other working women.
Yet I insist that Veena is special, different from the rest, extraordinary
in innumerable ways.

Over steaming cups of coffee, Veena slowly revealed the various chapters of
her life; heart-wrenching incidents on how she had to fight legal battles
with leading universities when she was seeking admission into an MBA
program. She had decided not to run away from the challenges that lay ahead,
but to stand tall and face them, fight them and win the battle.
Inspite of limited support from her parents, who had a tough time believing
in the fact that their daughter can live a normal life without their
support, Veena achieved the unbelievable. She had gradually learnt to draw
strength from within herself. She had grown into a strong, confident and
highly motivated individual.
At the core, however, she was still the kind-hearted and amicable person
whom I had known years back.

It was the first day of our college in the year 1997. There was excitement
and anxiety all around. Girls around were full of pride of getting admission
in one of the best colleges of Delhi University. There was a brief
introduction of the students and then they were asked to go to their
respective classes. Mine was in room number 9. I was looking here and there
when I overheard a sweet voice asking someone "Can you please take me to
Room No 9?" The other girl said, "I am in a little hurry. I have to go."
I turned back and said instantly, "You can come with me. I am going to the
same class." She tried to locate me and then held my hands closely. It was
then that I realized that Veena was visually impaired. It was my first tryst
with someone who was differently able.

This day was however, the beginning of a friendship for a lifetime.
And it was evident today, when we met after more than a decade and the
camaraderie was the same like the good old college days.
Those three years in college were perhaps the best days of my life, a new
experience altogether. Veena was there with me in the hostel and with every
passing day I

dishes in the school) for decades. The occasion was the annual fest of
the Aanand Singh Smarak Khel Smiti (an NGO in Delhi working for the
blind people since 1997). They organize various academic/cultural
competitions every year for the school-going blind children. Today the
ceremony was held to honor the winners of 2015. The chief guest was
the newly appointed Chief Commissioner of Persons with Disabilities
(Dr Kamlesh Kumar Pandey). And the guest of honor was Rajya Sabha MP
(Mr Tarun Vijay). The ‘Gandhi Hall’ of the school was jam-packed. The
reason was obvious, the function was followed by a Kavi Sammelan where
most of the Kavis were blind; who came from the different parts of the
country. Mr Shiv Shankar Upadhaya from Bihar, Mr Aqbar raj from
(Khandva MP), Mr Swedeshi Khiladi from (Mathura UP), Mis Shikha Dube
(the youngest female kavitri from Diwas MP) and a host of Delhi-based
other senior kavis. I wish the organisers should upload the Kavi
Sammelan on the youtube. All kavis truly enthralled the audience from
their excellent verses.

Now let me turn to the substantive part of the function which is the
purpose of this share. The CCPD Dr Kamlesh kumar Pandey, whom I
listened for the first time, addressed the gathering for more than 10
minutes. And to my pleasant surprise, Dr Pandey is a man of substance.
Within a week of his stint, he has delivered an Yorker in the court of
different ministries to submit a corrigendum detailing category-wise
data of employed disabled people. And the deadline is 10 February
2016. This order was delivered in the wake of a petition filed by the
National Federation of the Blind (NFB) India seeking justice for blind
people who are the least employed among all 3 categories across the
ministries/department. out of the 35 departments, 21 were represented
by the secretaries/joint-secretaries in the Court of the CCPD. Mr
Santosh Kumar Rungta, (General Secretary of the NFB) provided factual
data of the two departments including the Defence Ministry which
discriminated against the blind. It all happened on the first day of
his joining the office. Not only this, The Chief Commissioner also
informed the gathering that on the bases of recent media reports, he
has taken a suo motive action by seeking report from the National
Carrier for the discrimination against Prof Anita Ghi at the Delhi
airport. Though it was not covered by the print media however the
Rajya Sabha television reported it. He also informed the gathering
that today on the report published in the Dainak Jagran about Grp
brutally beating up blind travellers in UP he has asked the NIVH to
file a Fir against the Railway officer since travelling students
belong to the institution. He also informed us about his long
association with Saksham (Akhil Bhartiyye Viklang Kalyaan Sangh. He
has worked on the grassroot and one can hope his tenure could prove
very productive for the sector.

As a researcher, what captivated me the most was the speech given by
Mr Tarun Vijay (the BJP MP in the Rajya Sabha. Though it is a common
knowledge that Politicians love to make promises and announcements to
forget them later, however what Mr Tarun Vijay promised is exemplary.
He told the gathering that in the upcoming Budget session, he will
suggest in the parliament that the President of India should nominate
one disabled person in the Rajya Sabha and the number of nominated
persons should go up to 13. As he uttered these unexpected words, the
‘Gandhi Hall’ erupted in to jubilation and The crowd enjoyed the
moment and maxicon wave ‘Tarun Vijay Zindabad Zindabad’ echoed all
around. I hope that Mr Tarun Vijay must have sensed the deep
frustration and agony of the million disabled people’s who are in
desperate search of their voice in the ‘temple of justice’. However I
wonder if his colleagues think the same? Whatever be the future, this
Sunday 7 Feb 2016 was spent in the same school where sumptuous food,
cricket and old friends made my day.

Subject: TRINAYANI IS DELIGHTED TO BE PART OF THE KALA GHODA ARTS FESTIVAL 2016

Friends..

We are happy and grateful to Brinda Miller and her team at Kalaghoda for giving
us the platform of KGAF to spread awareness about the strengths and abilities
of persons with disabilities.

Trinayani's participation will include an inclusive music concert by disabled
and non disabled performers, an arts installation and a music workshop for
children with an introduction to sign language. Our presence will cover all
nine days of the festival.

Trinayani's Kala Ghoda initiatives are:

1.LET'S TALK: Installation on Rampart Row, 6 to 14 February
Let's Talk is an installation of 5 Fibre Glass Sculptures on Rampart Row as
part of the Visual Arts initiative. The installation will allow us to talk
about the world of persons who are deaf and deaf-blind.
Let's Talk is the result of a collaboration between Hasmukh K. Angari, who is
deaf-blind; Shankar M. Bhoya who is an artist and Hasmukhs trainer and Nantu
Behari Das, a non disabled professional sculptor from Kolkata. It makes use of
the versatile skills of persons with and without disabilities.
2. HALLAM CHALLAM: Music Workshop on February 7 at the Museum Gardens, 4 to 5
pm.
Hallam Challam is a rhyme-n-rhythm workshop that will use ORIGINAL NURSERY
RHYMES & SONGS, created out of "theth" hindi poems, to entertain the children
while teaching them sign language through song and dance in an affectionate,
playful and fun ambiance. The workshop will be conducted by me. The CD albums
of the songs will be up for sale at the venue along with a few other music
albums for children.

3. Musical performance by Pehli Barish, Trinayani's Inclusive Music Band, at
Cross Maidan on 11 February, 6 pm to 6.15 pm.
Pehli Barish, Trinayani's inclusive music band, comprising of disabled and
non-disabled artistes will perform a 15-minute session on karaoke tracks. We
will have compere Kishor Gohil, singers Mangal Sunny and Sidhhesh Patil, all
of whom are blind and Ritika Sahni who will perform along with them. Pehli
Baarish performs regularly at unconventional venues like old age homes,
hospitals, NGOs, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, shelter homes and
orphanages to share the gift of music and bring joy and hope to all.
Do join us.
With gratitude
Ritika Sahni

[AI] Kerala: Visually Challenged Students Still Await Second Term Books

2016-02-07 Thread avinash shahi
http://www.newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/Visually-Challenged-Students-Still-Await-Second-Term-Books/2016/02/08/article3266236.ece
Braille Press at Kerala Federation of Blind in T’Puram | Manu R
Mavelil THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With barely two months left for the
academic year to close, the visually challenged school students in the
state are yet to get most books, especially the the second term (part
2) of classes I to VIII.Only a few schools got part 2 books of classes
II, III, VI and VIII, the syllabus of which changed this year.

The delay is attributed to the inefficiency of the Kerala State Centre
for Advanced Printing and Training (C-Apt) which was given the
contract by Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) to print part 2
books, in November. C-Apt was given the contract because the Braille
press run by the Kerala Federation of the Blind (KFB), to print
Braille text books since 1983, could not meet the demand with its
limited resources. But the task was reassigned to them in a recent
meeting held at DPI as C-Apt could undertake the task despite having a
superior machine. Over 500 students study in 16 special schools. The
text books are sought after by visually challenged students of other
schools, blind teachers and others. The 10-year old machine does not
operate fully as the Federation does not have enough money to maintain
it. It has four modules and requires imported machine components
called ‘hammer’ that make precision punching. An entire set of hammers
cost Rs 34,000 which has validity only for four months. The press is
depended on a Dehradun-based supplier who insisted on providing at
least half the amount before they could import ‘hammers’ from Sweden.
Printing paper alone costs Rs 4 lakh annually and the total expense
comes to around Rs 8 lakh a year. The government has given only Rs 1
lakh of the Rs 3.5 lakh annual grant. The government has allotted Rs
43 lakh to buy an advanced printer that costs Rs 76 lakh. “We are in
talks with various philanthropists to find the remaining money,” said
R Sasidharan Pillai, Secretary in-charge and Executive Director, KFB.

Disconcerting Delay

➤ The delay is attributed to the inefficiency of the Kerala State
Centre for Advanced Printing and Training (C-Apt) which was given the

Re: [AI] Visually impaired people cannot travel on disable compartment?, friends please thro some light on this matter!!!!

2016-02-07 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Yes, people are ignorant but we have to deal with ignorants and fools.
Just like the other day, TC refused to consider my ticket valid merely because
my escort had failed to turn up while going to Pune, even though the ticket was
issued with escort and it is equally valid even if I have the ticket without
escort.

So, what to do in real time to tackle such fools, is a million dollar question.
I am thinking of carrying a print out of rules from the website for ready
reference, although I am not at all sure whether it would really help.
