[AI] Accessibility issue in rediffmail.com new interface

2017-01-09 Thread Lyngdoh
Hi all,

I am a rediffmail user since 2012 and I found it so convenient as
equal to that of Gmail.com interface.
Lately, I moved to the newer interface and very unfortunate for me to
find out that it is not at all accessible for screen readers. I tried
with both NVDA latest version and with JAWS14 (as this is the version
installed in my office PC).
I wanted to reset it to the older one but the option is nowhere to be found.
Now, being an employee in rediff.com itself, I am planning to take
this issue to the web designing team and explaining to them the
necessity to include the accessibility features as per the WCAG 2.0
norms.
My issue is that I don't know how to start and I doubt whether they
will adhere to the guideline as prescribed because presumably there
are very less visually impaired rediffmail.com users.
Can someone from the accessibility background help me in this regard.

--

Believe in WORK not in LUCK! & Most of all, trust in God but don't be
dependent on Him.
---
Thanks,
Cornelius Lyngdoh.

demat is banking facility or banks acting as broker facility is our doubt sir.
savings and current account happens inside bank so RBI circular covers

[AI] regarding b.ed. special education for the visually impaired

2017-01-09 Thread mukesh jain
Hello,
This is the mail to seek the information about the course B.ed.
special for the visually impaired persons. One of my colleague
residing in the chhattisgarh state would like to persue her studies
in B.Ed. special for the visually impaired persons. Hence, she would
like to know about the details of the institutions offering such kind
of courses near to her locality.

So far as per my information, there are couple ofinstitutions in delhi
offering such kind of course for instance, blind relief association,
delhi university etc. but she can not go far to join this course due
to her family commitments.
Someone recently told me about ignou used to conduct such kind of
training through distance mode but nowadays, they have stopped
providing this course. So does anyone knows about it whether ignou
still provides this course.

Someone also guided her to join the college situated at nagpur and the
name of that college is adarsh sanskar college. So upon enquiring with
this college, she learnt that they do provide such kind of training
but the fees of this course is rs.5 and they have also advised her
to enroll quickly as there are only four days left for closing the
admission.

So considering this hefty amount, I would like to know from the people
who knows about this course offered by this college and if anyone has
done this course from that college, would like to communicate.

I would also be thankful if you provide your recommendations for any
other good institutions providing this kind of course. Only her
concern is that the course should be in hindi medium.

Looking forward for your valuable feedback on this query.
Thanks in anticipation for all your cooperation,

Re: [AI] can't we open demat account with thum impression

2017-01-09 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Apart from master circular which summarizes the existing circulars on a topic,
RBI has issued separate notifications for giving all banking facilities to
blind in 2008 and 2012.
I may mail the same, if you wish, or you can get them on RBI website.

As regarding implementation by banks, RBI is paper regulator, to say the least.

RBI issues its master circular every year and they do not mention in detail
the facilities we have every master circular. A bank officer told a friend
to find out something in the form of an order. These are all guidelines
which the banks are not bound to follow perhaps. Please clarify.

Re: [AI] Complaint

2017-01-09 Thread Saravanan.K

Dear Rajendra,

Happy to hear from you to put forward our complaint to political bodies.
If is done by any individual, then it will be treated as dust and it
will be thrown to dust bin.

We want to carry out our effort as a mass schedule.
And also we can not expect the reply in fewer attempts.
We have to put forward our efforts repeatedly until we get justice.
I request you all to put our hands together and start proceeding.
There are many matters to raise our hands.
But why we are getting back.
Are we afraid of surroundings.
Why we want to convenience ourselves meaninglessly.
Shedding tears of fish in water will not be recognized by anyone.
Our feelings and worries will not be like that.
Try to exploit everything forcefully as a mass.
Please share the mail ID's of important person for whom door should be
knocked.

Please give up your hands to raise our rights.

Commandable job done by NATMO. Can we as individuals purchase the
atlas. What is the procedure? I wish NATMO good luck for their future
projects.

Re: [AI] can't we open demat account with thum impression

2017-01-09 Thread Amiyo Biswas
RBI issues its master circular every year and they do not mention in detail
the facilities we have every master circular. A bank officer told a friend
to find out something in the form of an order. These are all guidelines
which the banks are not bound to follow perhaps. Please clarify.

With best regards,

Hi
RBI through its circular, had stated, all banking services should be given
to blind persons. Therefore, there is no merit in baring demat services.
Moreover, demat account is linked to your savings account, so, I don't
what is the justification in extending savings account without demat
account.

This iswhimsical ways of the official concerned. Don't take it.

dear friends,

i asked for demat acount from ICICI.
my pan card has my thumb impression as signature so, ICICI back office
refused my application.
however, they are ready to open saving banks by accepting my thumb
impression cheque leaf.

[AI] Paytm will no longer will work as a wallet.

2017-01-09 Thread gufran ahmed
dear friends, please go through this news. please note that below
mentioned article is in hindi and published in ddainik jagran under
tech gyan>apps.

friends now that we all are aware that paytm is a private entity and
we have to complete the KYC first to avail the services of PAYTM.
although we have other wallets like mobikwick, oxigen, etc. alongwith
the other options like netbanking and mobile banking to make mobile
recharges and utility bill payments. but most of us are using the
services of uber due to its cheap rates and app is fairly accessible.
the uber cab is accepting payments through paytm wallet alongwith
debit and credit cards. but as we all aware that its not safe to use
cards on uber app as one has to save the card credential first.
therefore it is going to bit difficult for us to complete the KYC with
paytm. as most of us using thumb impression instead of signature. so
my request to all of you that we should write to paytm mentioning the
RBI circular regarding banking facility to the visually impaired
customers.
with tanks and regards gufran.

Hi
RBI through its circular, had stated, all banking services should be given
to blind persons. Therefore, there is no merit in baring demat services.
Moreover, demat account is linked to your savings account, so, I don't what
is the justification in extending savings account without demat account.
This iswhimsical ways of the official concerned. Don't take it.

Re: [AI] can't we open demat account with thum impression

2017-01-09 Thread Kotian, H P
Hi
RBI through its circular, had stated, all banking services should be given to
blind persons. Therefore, there is no merit in baring demat services.
Moreover, demat account is linked to your savings account, so, I don't what is
the justification in extending savings account without demat account.
This iswhimsical ways of the official concerned. Don't take it.

[AI] Made in India: World's first full atlas for the blind

2017-01-09 Thread avinash shahi
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/science/made-in-india-worlds-first-full-atlas-for-the-blind/articleshow/56400928.cms
TIRUPATI: Making maps available for the blind is not easy and the
world's first fully mass-reproduced atlas for the blind has been made
in India.

Using maps comes so very naturally to the sighted but for the millions
of blind people of the world, maps were like a forbidden fruit.

To the sighted, looking up the location of the nearest coffee shop or
the metro station is easy with maps now being an integral part of
smartphones.

For the blind, maps were mostly inaccessible but now that is changing
for the 28 million visually-handicapped people in India with the
Department of Science and Technology having released an atlas
tailor-made for the blind.

For the first time, blind people can get a feel of what India looks
like. To the sighted, the map of India is no surprise but to a person
who can't see, a map was totally inaccessible.

The solution was to make a map that could be felt rather than be seen.
In most blind people the tactile sensation is accentuated to
compensate for the loss of sight.

The National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation (NATMO) of
Kolkata after years of effort made this unique atlas. Here the map
outlines are raised and embossed on paper using silk screen printing
so that the blind can feel them and it is called a braille atlas.

According to Prithvish Nag, former Surveyor General of India and
currently Vice Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth,
Varanasi, "This is the first full atlas for the blind in the world."

Speaking of other global initiatives, he says most other efforts in
the world have been to make individual-tactile maps but to make a full
atlas which can be mass produced, this Indian effort that started
under his leadership, is really one-of-its-kind in the world.

On January 3, at the Indian Science Congress held here, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi presented the director of NATMO, Tapti Banerjee with the
'National Award for Science and Technology Intervention in Empowering
the Physically Challenged' in recognition of this achievement.

Speaking to some 11,000 scientists here, Modi said, "On the lines of
Corporate Social Responsibility, the concept of Scientific Social
Responsibility needs to be inculcated to connect our leading
institutions to all stakeholders, including schools and colleges. We
must create an environment for sharing of ideas and resources."

This braille atlas is one such activity which will help the Devyang,
as the Prime Minister renamed the handicapped people some time back.

According to estimates by the Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment, in 2015 there were over 16 million blind and 28 million
visually-impaired people in India and now for the first time they can
also 'visualise' maps. For people who have partial vision NATMO makes
maps with accentuated colours so they can see the maps despite their
low vision.

According to the World Health Organisation, 285 million people are
estimated to be visually impaired worldwide, of which 39 million are
blind and 246 have low vision and sadly about 90 per cent of the
world's visually impaired live in low-income settings.

India is home to the largest number of blind people in the world and
it is an unfortunate situation since according to experts about three
quarters of these are cases of avoidable blindness.

Making an atlas for the blind was very challenging, says Banerjee
since the map itself has to be uncluttered as the blind feel the maps
with their fingers. In addition all the names and meta data of the
maps had to be accommodated in braille.

The 84-page black-and-white atlas is made on oversized A-3 size paper
so that all the information could be easily accommodated.

According to Banerjee the work on this project started way back in
1997 and her team members had to first master braille to make the
atlas. She laments the work took so long simply because the government
cut the staff strength of NATMO from a high of 500 to just 150. With
an annual budget of Rs 6 crore NATMO has made as many as 2000
different normal maps available on paper.

The atlas has been prepared not only in English but also in Bengali,
Gujarati and Telugu, there are 20 different basic maps that range from
the political map of India, to the physical map of India to various
soil types found in India.

NATMO has printed some 500 copies of the braille atlas which cost them
about Rs 1000 each and these are being distributed free to all the
blind schools of India.

The atlas made by NATMO is rather bulky since high quality glazed
paper has been used and then using a special printing technique the
raised embossing has been achieved, explains Banerjee. In the upcoming
edition light weight imported paper will be used where embossing is
easier to do, says Banerjee. This may make the atlas for the blind
light weight and more portable.

As NATMO embraces the digital environment the next stage

[AI] Poulomi Banerjee reports in the Hindustan Times: ‘Disabled women not thought to be wife material by many’

2017-01-09 Thread avinash shahi
In September last year, Antara Telang, a young girl from Mumbai wrote
a blog post based on her experience of trying to find a potential
companion on the dating-app Tinder. Telang is an amputee, having lost
one foot after an accident, at the age of 18. Her post was upbeat and
humourous, and while she admits that there were those whose comments
were insensitive, it ended with her saying how being on the app helped
her regain her self-esteem and made her realize that she was not
undateable, just because she wears a prosthetic leg. “Not all women
with disabilities, however, fall under one umbrella. My general
mobility has not been affected by the accident” says Telang, adding,
“There are those who suffer from more severe mobility restrictions.
For them to go out and find a match is more difficult,” she says.

To begin with, the women themselves suffer from low self-esteem. “It’s
because of the charitable way that society looks at you. Women with
disabilities don’t fit the conventional norms of beauty or
expectations that society has from a woman,” says inclusive design
consultant Shivani Gupta. She is wheelchair bound. Agrees Nidhi Goyal,
a disability rights and gender justice activist based in Mumbai. “In
our society a woman is supposed to be sarva gun sampanna. The same is
not expected of a man. You find more men with disabilities in a
relationship than women with disabilities,” she says.

Often the girls’ families subscribe to the collective feeling. In one
of her blogs, Goyal talks of how in a country where arranged marriages
are still the norm for many, while parents are keen to have their
other children “settled”, they will not take the initiative to get
their disabled daughters married.

“In our society a woman is supposed to be sarva gun sampanna. The same
is not expected of a man. You find more men with disabilities in a
relationship than women with disabilities”

However, Kolkata-based disability rights activist Shampa Sengupta
feels that the stigma against a disabled woman is ironically more
pronounced in cities. Some states have a system under which a monetary
grant is paid to a disabled spouse, and among the economically weaker
section, the money can be a lure. As Delhi-based disability rights
activist Anjlee Agarwal says, “Many marry for the money and then leave
the women”. Physical abuse and infidelity are also common, she adds.
Agarwal gives two examples. “In one of the cases, when the wife who
was disabled got pregnant, she asked her sister to come and help her
manage the house. The husband got into a relationship with the sister
and told his wife that she would either have to accept the relation or
move out. Because of the baby she decided to stay back. There was
another case I know of, where a disabled woman was routinely beaten by
her husband. When she couldn’t take it anymore, she approached the
police, but the police told her to adjust because who would look after
her otherwise,” adds Agarwal.

A life of neglect, abuse & discrimination: What differently abled women suffer

Lack of toilets restrict access to public spaces for differently abled women

Technology hasn’t changed much and online dating or matrimonial sites
haven’t made finding a partner necessarily easy. “I suffer from low
visibility. How will I check out the profiles of the people there or
interact with them? Most of the sites are not voice coded. Like most
public spaces, these sites too are not disabled friendly,” says Goyal.
There are a some sites, specifically for the disabled, but most women
feel that such segregation is unfair. There is also a gap between
dating and marrying, for that is a commitment which involves the
family and society at large. Gupta dated for ten years before she got
married. “Somehow the confidence to marry was not there. And when I
did get married, it was a shock. You become so used to not being
accepted, that you begin to expect that. It is a shock when you get
accepted,” she says. Bengaluru-based Meenu Bhambhani is married with a
child. “I got married when I was 39, after dating for about
six-and-a-half years. But till I was 33, no one had befriended me or
looked at me as a potential partner,” she says.

Read: When the odds are against her: Are differently abled women
represented in law?

There is a distance between the disabled and the so-called “normal”
world. “There is little awareness about the disabled. Most people lack
the social etiquette required to engaged with the disabled. They are
seen either as pitiable or superhumans, the normal things of everyday
life are not associated with them. They are out of social things like
dating,” says Goyal. She adds. “Even in popular culture such as films
their depiction is aimed to evoke either pity or terror. I liked
Margarita With A Straw simply because it started a discourse around
women with disabilities and their sexuality. There is another coming
up, the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kabil. But I wonder why
