Re: [AI] Challenges while using Uber

2019-05-18 Thread Anirban Mukherjee
Hi friends,
Apps like Uber and Ola have been indeed game-changers in so far as
independent travelling is concerned. However, since these services are
confined largely to big cities, small town people continue to face
obstacles. Well, as far as the issues I face while using such services,
proper pick up location is indeed an issue. Apart from this, I haven't
found much difficulty in using them.

2019-05-18 Thread Ajay Minocha
Turab,

When at an unknown place, I often ask the hosts to explain the driver
the pick up location if it is too tricky. I don't think it is
unreasonable at all.

Regarding the 2nd concern, I generally run google maps on my phone
while traveling, it most of the times takes care of the drivers either
not following the maps or dropping me mid-way. A 50-100 meters
deviation should be acceptable to the drivers, and they usually behave
themselves if they know who's calling the shots :)

[AI] Request for Advice / Suggestions

2019-05-18 Thread Saaqib Mahmuud
Hello Access India mates? How are you?
My name is Saaqib Mahmood. I'm a 40-year-old visually impaired person from
Abbottabad, Pakistan. I have an MPhil degree in Mathematics and have been
employed as a college teacher in the Department of Higher Education, Government
of NWFP since August 2006.
Despite my visual handicap, I have enough eyesight to be able to read and write
the ordinary inkprint from about six inches or so though not in the sunlight. I
am comfortable reading books on a PC (especially those in the DJVU file
format). However, I am also familiar with JAWS as well as braille. In fact, I
have two certificates from the Hadley School, USA, in the Unified English
Braille (UEB) from the Hadley School for the Blind, USA, and have completed the
UEB Online course offered by an institution in Australia.

Should I be looking for opportunities of pursuing my PhD degree in Mathematics
or some related field at any university in India? Will it be a good idea?

What kind of response am I likely to get should I apply for admission to a PhD
programme at a university in India?

Am I going to be able to avail any facilities / concessions that are available
to the blind and visually impaired students?
Which universities should I particularly focus on?
Anybody over here who could extend me any direct help and support?

Regards.
Sincerely,
Saaqib Mahmood

[AI] Transcript of my article in the Hindustan Times

2019-05-18 Thread George Abraham

How General Elections 2019 were disabled-friendly

By George Abraham

Blurb: The Election Commission took a definite step forward signaling the
recognition of the citizenship of persons with disabilities and ensuring
their inclusion

April 11 was voting day in Noida. It was Phase 1 of the 'Maha Tyohar', the
biggest elections in the world. I was excited, curious and a little
apprehensive. The Election Commission of India (ECI) had promised an
inclusive election. The theme for this massive operation was "leave no one
behind". Advertisements on radio, television and social media were
repeatedly talking about accessible polling booths, Braille markings on
Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), list of candidates in Braille,
pick-and-drop facilities, trained personnel etc. I believe that this is the
first time that the ECI had looked at persons with disabilities as serious
stakeholders in the General Elections. I was delighted to be included,
though had serious fears about the reality on the ground. There is often a
huge gap between the cup and the lip when it comes to intent and execution.

My wife and I reached the polling station before 7am with a view to beat the
long queues. Well, we found that we were not the only people with this idea.
Long lines had formed already, waiting for the polling to start. To make
things easy, there were separate queues for men and women. This made me a
little nervous since my wife, besides voting herself, was also doubling up
to escort and assist me. We approached an official standing close by and
told him of my blindness and the need for assistance. He immediately asked
us to go right in front and meet the polling officer who promptly provided
me with a list in Braille. When I said I did not know Braille, he asked my
wife to fill up form 49A and then we were directed to proceed towards the
booth. My wife cast her vote first and then she accompanied me in and read
out the party symbols alongside the buttons on the EVMs. I counted the
buttons from the top and pressed the button of my choice. The beep went off
and I had exercised my franchise.

In the following weeks, my colleagues and I spoke to several blind and
visually impaired people from across the country regarding their voting
experience. Many were appreciative of the ECI's efforts in making these
elections accessible. Some cribbed of insensitive officials. There were a
few booths where the Braille list of candidates was missing. But overall
these elections have been a tremendous improvement as far as inclusion of
persons with disabilities was concerned.

It is critical for us to view the ECI's efforts in the context of the sheer
magnitude of the country: 543 constituencies, 1.035 million polling booths,
3.96 million EVMs, 8000 candidates, 2293 political parties, 900 million
registered voters, 11 million polling officials. Given these numbers, the
ECI's effort is commendable. While there is room for improvement, it has
taken a definite step forward signaling their recognition of the citizenship
of persons with disabilities and ensuring their inclusion.

Three cheers to that!

Re: [AI] Very simple and cheap way to Accessible TV experience

2019-05-18 Thread sampath raj rao
Hi how about its net connectivity?
Do we be mandated to use their service through ethernet as I have seen
in their setboxes the provision for ethernet connectivity or can we
connect it through wifi?,
What else features are their, such as connecting keyboards, web cams
and apps and also what about its remote, is it accessible and tactile
or touch remote.
Your review would be of much use to most of us who are in look for an
accessible android TV...
Thanking you,

[AI] Challenges while using Uber

2019-05-18 Thread turab chimthanawala
Hi all,
I have been a regular Uber user for the past four years. While it has
been a God sent for independent travel, I continue to face the
following challenges:
a) Difficulty to direct the driver to my exact Pick up point: when I
am at a unfamiliar place with little ideas of the topography. Despite
entering the exact address in the Pick up Tab, drivers don't often
arrive at the correct place. Often after long delays and attempts to
explain them the pick up, the ride has to be cancelled.
b)Some drivers fail to drop at the precise destination (even if the
correct location is entered). While Google Maps is also not always
accurate, drivers also don't take any efforts. Last Monday I was
dropped almost a kilo metre away from my destination!

Requests made to Uber via the app and twitter do not get anything beyond 'Sorry'

Are others also facing the same problems?
Any solutions?

Thanking you
Best
Turab

Dear Avichal,
Tactopus (www.tactopus.com/store) makes a variety of inclusive products for
children. One of the products - Singing cards (
https://tactopus.com/store/Musical-Greeting-Cards-Customise-Now-p126890554)
are greeting cards with tactile images that sing rhymes when scanned. Many
people in the past have used these to send across personalized greetings.
We do include short messages in braille if required.

In case you want something specific in bulk, we also take design service
orders. Please reach me at +91-805-666-8943 and we can discuss the
specifics.

I already have an Airtel Digital TV connection. Will ask Airtel for a
settop box upgrade. Any idea what is the price for upgrade?
