When a parent posts a picture or a video of their child on Instagram, they are 
likely hoping for what most social media users seek out:
love, emojis, and compliments.
But when public posts featuring children with disabilities, medical conditions, 
or visible differences are picked up by the Instagram algorithm and suddenly 
shown to tens of thousands of strangers scrolling through random Reels, the 
comments instantly turn violent and abusive.

Strangers from around the world predict the child’s death, tell the parent that 
they should have chosen abortion, post GIFs comparing the child to a monster or 
an animal or a vegetable, claim that the child will live a meaningless life, 
accuse the parent of using drugs/alcohol during pregnancy, or even make sexual 
comments aimed at the minor.

While adults with disabilities also face discrimination, known as ableism, in 
the form of abusive comments and intrusive questions on Instagram, those who 
manage their own social media accounts can choose to hit back at users, limit 
their comments, report trolls, or reach out to the company for further 
assistance.

On the other hand, children with disabilities who are being posted by their 
able-bodied parents or guardians may have little to no say in how they are 
featured on social media or the steps being taken to deal with their cyber 
bullies.

Though comments can be deleted and reported while users can be blocked, it 
requires tremendous mental effort to even begin to clean up the dozens of 
violent or sexual hate comments left under a child’s Reel gone viral. Many 
responses that would be criminal if uttered offline are further ‘liked’ and 
upvoted by thousands of social media users. While some parents and caretakers 
lock or restrict comments, others choose to use the hate their child receives 
as a way to raise awareness or funds.

What is Meta doing to (not) solve the problem?
The Hindu reached out to Instagram-parent Meta to provide an example of the 
hateful comments posted under the video of a child with visible facial 
differences, and asked what measures the company was taking to protect minors 
with disabilities. Meta did not respond to multiple emails requesting comment.
However, the company has already been hit by serious complaints alleging that 
it does not prioritise children’s safety on its apps. In the U.S. state of New 
Mexico, Attorney General Raúl Torrez filed a lawsuit in late 2023 against Meta 
and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg, as well as Facebook and Instagram, alleging that 
the company’s platforms were “prime locations for predators to trade child 
pornography and solicit minors for sex.”

Based on an investigation using decoy accounts of minors, the New Mexico 
Attorney General’s Office reported that Meta showed sexual content to children, 
allowed adults to contact children to ask for explicit pictures of them, and 
let both Facebook and Instagram users sell an “enormous volume of child 
pornography,” among other dangerous failings.

“The Office’s investigators found that certain child exploitative content is 
over ten times more prevalent on Facebook and Instagram than it is on Pornhub 
and OnlyFans,” said a December 6 press release published by Torrez’s office.

Avoiding hate versus celebrating life
An entrepreneur, disability activist, and the founder of the Nipman Foundation, 
Nipun Malhotra recalled recently seeing more “horrible”
Instagram Reels mocking people with disabilities. Despite this, he supports 
parents who want to share photos of their children with disabilities as a way 
of celebrating their family members’ lives.

“So the fact of the matter is that if parents are posting things about their 
own children on social media, in a way there is an acceptance from a parent. I 
would much rather want a parent who’s sharing photos of their child with a 
disability on social media, compared to a parent who’s not [sharing] bec

More than half of the District Court complexes in the country do not
have ramps, only 25.2% have availability of wheelchairs, and just 5.1%
have tactile paving to assist persons with visual impairments in
navigating the court building, said a recent report by the Centre for
Research and Planning of the Supreme Court.
The first-of-its-kind report, released on December 15, sheds light on
the glaring inadequacies in the infrastructure of District Courts
across India, raising serious concerns about the impediments faced by
people with disabilities in accessing justice.
The report said while accessible toilets for people with disabilities
hold fundamental importance, only 30.4% of District Court complexes
have separate disabled-friendly toilets.

Visual Impairment

It highlighted that only 5.1% of District Courts have tactile paving
to assist persons with visual impairments in navigating the court
building. “Inclusivity and accessibility to justice can be ensured to
persons with visual impairment by giving them instructions that are
accessible to the tactile or auditory senses,” the report said.

Hearing Impairment

In a first, the Supreme Court in September last year allowed a deaf
lawyer to argue virtually with the help of a sign language
interpreter. The Delhi High Court too last year engaged the services
of a sign language interpreter to enable a petitioner who was hearing
impaired, to understand the proceedings.

While these may be positive signs, as per the report sign language
interpreters who could be engaged to assist persons with hearing
impairment in accessing court proceedings are available in only 2.8%
districts in India.

Infrastructure Gap

The report revealed that out of a sanctioned strength of 25,081 judges
in District Judiciary, there are 20,831 courtrooms highlighting
infrastructure gap of 4,250 courtrooms.

The report said 73.5% of the available court premises are owned by the
judiciary, 13.3% are owned by the respective state government, 2.6%
(626 courtrooms) are rented premises, and 10.6% are under
construction.

As per information received from the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and
Ladakh, 35 courts in the district judiciary of Jammu & Kashmir and
Ladakh are functioning on an ad hoc arrangement from rented
accommodation or otherwise.

The report said when courts function in private rented buildings or in
stop-gap arrangements, they not only face the challenge of
non-availability of necessary amenities but also of a secure work
environment due to which all the stakeholders face inconvenience.

While the required provisions for people with disabilities are being
made in the newly constructed buildings, with respect to the existing
buildings, few High Courts have said that it is difficult to make
alterations in the old buildings or those functioning from temporary
accommodations due to structural limitations and space constraints.

The report said that the data signifies a “critical shortcoming” in
the judicial infrastructure with respect to accessibility,
necessitating concerted attention and action.

“There is a need for regular inspection by the concerned agencies like
the Public Works Department in coordination with the District Judges
to explore modifications that can be made in existing court buildings
to make the judicial infrastructure disabled-friendly,” it said.

the 6 digit UPI pin. I have all tricks like entering pin with double tap and 
serial swiping.

does work. Try face id. I use it all the time on the iPhone and have also used 
it on android on an old Nokia phone which I gave up because Nokia did not 
upgrade past android 11, I think.

Hi Friends,

Any dinosaurs like me out here still using Winamp for audio playback??

I like the ease of access to the equalizer, panning and moving tracks around 
the playlist, all easy to use from the keyboard. After adjusting EQ to your 
liking, saving that preset is easy also.

Then there’s a compressor plugin that you can also adjust easily, turn it on 
and off as you like Etc.

Anyone knows if there’s any modern audio playback programs that makes all this 
easy also from the keyboard?
