Re: [AI] Nepal blind eatery lights way for visually impaired
Actually, I attended an international music conference in Nepal last year and felt that VI persons are trying to go too far. I mean, they are working as translators, performing in music orchestras and bands and doing many more things. It was a very good conference and a good eye-opener. Copies of the program were circulated in Braille and they were going minute-to-minute by this schedule. - Original Message - From: avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com To: accessindia accessindia@accessindia.org.in Cc: jnuvision jnuvis...@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, May 17, 2012 4:18 PM Subject: [AI] Nepal blind eatery lights way for visually impaired Hi access Indians few days ago, we've got to know, some restaurant is runned by blind people in Chennai. And this time some delicious smel is coming from our neighbour nation Nepal. casto hunu honcha? nepali friends? I'm coming, no passport needed.☺ Go on reading By Gopal Sharma | Reuters – ..KATHMANDU (Reuters) - A line of diners, holding on to the shoulders of the person in front of them, enters the pitch dark hall at Nepal's first blind restaurant, which treats guests to food they can smell, touch and taste but not see. http://in.news.yahoo.com/nepal-blind-eatery-lights-way-visually-impaired-074643649.html The 16-seat dining room has been heavily curtained from ceiling to floor in black, and the guests grope their way to the table, guided deftly by the waiters -- all of whom are visually impaired. But while similar blind dining venues have already opened in Europe and the United States, the one here comes with the key difference that it provides a rare chance for the Nepali handicapped to gain a measure of independence. We should see this from two angles - giving opportunities to the blind and a new experience to the public, said Shyam Kakshhapati, president of the Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN). It is important to give opportunities to disabled people because there are not many job openings for them in our country. The blind restaurant, a separate wing of an ordinary eatery, comes on the heels of a separate restaurant chain that employs deaf waiters and has become popular with patrons. Trainees are nominated by the Nepal Association of the Blind, a charity working for the visually impaired, of whom there are estimated to be 200,000 in Nepal. Some are already working as telephone operators, teachers and musicians. Waiters get a daily wage of $6, a substantial income in a country where nearly one quarter of its 26.6 million people live on an income of less than $1.25 a day. With this I can continue my studies and the money is a financial relief to my family, said 23-year-old Utsav Nepal, a waiter and a bachelor's level student in a Kathmandu college. In impoverished Nepal disabled persons are considered economic burdens on many families. Some take disability as a curse for things they have done wrong in their previous lives. But notions are changing fast as Nepal undergoes rapid political changes after the Maoist rebels, who waged a decade-long civil war, joined the mainstream and the 239-year-old feudal monarchy was abolished in 2008. Still, change comes slowly, and the restaurant may play an important role. It gives customers a small taste of what it is like to be blind...If they understand the problems of the visually impaired people they can help them better, said Adam Levene, a senior official of the Embassy of Israel, which helped set up the facility and train waiters. At the restaurant, lined by a small bamboo grove, waiters put their white walking sticks into their bags and flit between tables to help diners find a fork or advise them on orders. If you want spicy food then take fusilli with cheese, mushroom, chilli and olives, Nepal, the waiter, is heard suggesting to the guests. A Spanish couple, who wanted to do something special and different on their first wedding anniversary, came to eat. At the beginning I was scared completely...how to find food, how big is the dish, said Milca Hanukoglu, after the anniversary dinner with her husband, a native of Malaga. It was romantic. Instead of candle light, it was darkness. I do not have a talking mobile and that's why I feel so. but I simply ignore those messages. but the same may be of use to those having mobiles. so, this list is not a talking shop, insensitive, useless, futile and unworthy as you said and your message is not a scientific test of it. Re: [AI] interesting presentation on braille
Very rightly said. How can I know what Worth Trust is doing for cheaper Braille displays? - Original Message - From: Ketan Kothari muktake...@gmail.com To: manis...@gmail.com; accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Tuesday, December 27, 2011 7:57 PM Subject: Re: [AI] interesting presentation on braille What an excellent and succinct presentation! I had an opportunity to listen to Kevin Carey in Ghana and he was as forthright as he is here. On the main topic, most of what Kevin says is true. I can vouch that it is more important that a child learns the language and reading skill rather than whether he learns contractions or not. Recently, in response to a litigation, Mumbai Municipal Corporation announced some jobs and the interviews and written tests were held at Mumbai. What I learnt was that the performance of candidates was appalling. They were not able to type correctly and spellings etc. were very bad to say the least. Most of them were not familiar with semantics etc. The reading habit amongst our boys and girls (even audio and E-books) is diminishing. This is a cause of concern. Braille needs to be promoted using Braille displays but situation in India is slightly different than in UK or other developped countries. Here, we do not have access to as many technological options as they do. We are still dependent on hard copies and marketting of Braille is not done properly by any organization. In fact, even those of us who learn Braille in schools tend to forget it as there is very little to read. Cheaper Braille displays is a very important option that needs to be promoted fast. Worth Trust is already experimenting on one such display and that should be out soon. Another point that needs to be kept in mind is that even when sighted people read computer they read and we listen. Our knowledge of spelling is extremely poor as is also evident from some of the mails that the list receives. Of course, we ignore these errors in favour of encouraging people to write rather than write correctly but we must remember that these same youngsters will then aspire for competitive jobs. I know that I have been tangential but this subject is a cause of great concern. May write something more in near future. - Original Message - From: Manish Agrawal manis...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Tuesday, December 27, 2011 5:03 PM Subject: [AI] interesting presentation on braille I came across this very interesting presentation on braille by Kevin Carey from RNIB. Apologies if this has been posted earlier. Having been a newbie very occasional braille reader for about 4 years now, I couldn't agree more with everything here, most of all the need for cheaper braille displays. start of document Can Braille Survive? by Kevin Carey Chair Royal National Institute of Blind People Presentation at World Congress Braille21 University of Leipzig Germany 27th - 30th September 2011 Abstract: If braille is to survive into the 21st Century, primarily as a down stream reading medium from the digitally distributed environment (currently the internet and the emerging cloud), it will have to re-invent itself as a mass medium, simpler, cheaper and easier to render. 1. Introduction We could hardly be in a better place than Leipzig, home of J.S. Bach, to begin a discussion of braille in the digital age because the first major commercial casualty of the internet was the 'big six' classical music recording companies; within a decade the profit on music sales radically shifted from the recording companies, who made their profits from distribution, to Apple's iTunes. The music industry, instead of understanding the new market of the early '90s, adopted a defensive strategy, was temporarily out-flanked by peer-to-peer sites like Napster, and then just capitulated to Apple which offered a mid-way point between their old hegemony and implosion from piracy. And as I speak now, this very moment, the profit margin on books is moving rapidly from contracting publishers, the print equivalent of recording companies, to Amazon, Kindle and Apple. Despite the valuable role of publishers in sorting out the aspirant wheat from the chaff, the distributors have had a strangle hold on publishing since the birth of book store chains and supermarkets; but today, more than ever, the digital distributors are going for high volume, low margin. Now whether you approve of this or not, the whole point of digital creation and consumption is that it radically cuts production and distribution costs. In other words, in the analogue age the producers of recording masters and print plates were rewarded for their investment with a big slice of the sales profit margin but as production costs have fallen the profit has been transferred from the producer to the distributor. In parallel with this, power has shifted from the publisher to the self publisher. Nowadays
Re: [AI] 25 Incredible Technologies for the Learning Disabled
Very informative article, congratulations. - Original Message - From: Ravindra Jadhav ravikj...@gmail.com To: accessindia accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, December 26, 2011 10:59 PM Subject: [AI] 25 Incredible Technologies for the Learning Disabled specialchildren.about.com/od/learningdisabilitynews Learning disabilities manifest themselves in countless ways, varying in severity from the very mild to the debilitating and those that impact different elements of education. Yet they almost universally end up equally stereotyped, misunderstood and sometimes even unfairly stigmatized. The rigid traditional classroom structure rarely provides the learning disabled with the resources necessary to meet their reading, writing, math, social and mobility skills or sense impairment. Because of this, many learning disabled students feel marginalized by their peers and instructors alike, oftentimes hindered more by imposed isolation than the conditions themselves. But as technology marches on, so too do opportunities for academic success. No matter their struggle, these perfectly competent, capable individuals probably have something available to close any unfortunate, challenging gaps. It’s all a matter of finding the right answer and finding ways to pay for it — though the more financially strapped have a few options available, depending on their situation and what they require. Please be aware that this article is not meant to take the place of legitimate medical advice. Different individuals require different solutions based on numerous factors, and only a small sample of the myriad assistive technologies available receives representation here. Take it as a brief overview rather than something even one atom definitive or professional — save diagnoses and prescriptions for the experts. 1Talking calculators Both the visually impaired and the learning disabled can greatly benefit from these simple devices, which relay mathematics via audio. For those with dyscalculia, such a gadget renders it much easier to check and double-check assignments. 2Electronic worksheets Students struggling with properly lining up words and equations using standard pencils and paper sometimes use electronic worksheets when completing assignments. Some even come with text-to-speech or speech synthesizing capabilities, depending on what assistance is necessary for academic success. 3Word prediction software iPhones and Androids haven’t won word prediction programs much mainstream favor, but for the learning disabled, it can prove an absolute godsend. Those grappling with reading and spelling, such as the dyslexic, or difficulties writing and typing use these fantastic technologies to help complete assignments to their satisfaction. 4Text-to-Voice Just like the talking calculators, text-to-voice devices and software make classwork much more tolerable for learning disabled students. They do an excellent job of assisting individuals struggling with checking their spelling and grammar in addition to improving reading and writing comprehension skills. 5Free-form databases When used along with word processing software, free-form databases organize notes for students grappling with disorganization. All they need to do is type out the necessary information and use a quick and easy search function to browse through everything. 6Personal FM systems Personal FM systems come in a few different varieties depending on student needs and school resources. Some of the most sophisticated transmit audio directly from instructors’ microphones directly into a hearing aid! 7Digital Pens Different digital pens each feature different perks, but ones equipped with audio recording and the ability to convert handwriting seem to be particularly valuable. Best of all, learning disabled students need only write on traditional paper to reap the full benefits! 8Variable speed recorders Whether the devices use tapes or some other sonic equipment, students with learning disabilities involving auditory processing issues from variable speed recorders. Depending on their needs, sound can be slowed, hastened and sometimes even pitched up or down in order to render classwork more accessible. 9Abbreviation expanders Students who find typing extremely difficult use this neat software in conjunction with word processors. Along with some possible presets, they can customize their own unique abbreviations, which automatically expand into longer specified words. 10Graphic organizers Considering so many types of graphic organizers exist out there, anyone requiring assistance will more than likely find something perfectly suitable. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GW Micro Launches GWSkype Fort Wayne, Indiana (December 19, 2011) - GW Micro, Inc. (www.gwmicro.com) announced a major innovation today for the blind and visually impaired community. GW Micro, developers of Window-Eyes, the most powerful screen reader available, have developed GWSkype - a Window-Eyes app that makes Skype accessible to all blind and visually impaired people who use a Windows computer. Skype is a peer-to-peer service that allows users to call and message others via the Internet. Skype users may also call other landlines for a fee. While Skype has been around for years, its constantly changing user interface has been extremely difficult for blind and visually impaired users. Each time the user interface changes, we have to completely write new a new Window-Eyes app to account for the changes, said Dan Weirich, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for GW Micro. These constant changes make it difficult or impossible for blind and visually impaired consumers to continue using the Skype service. The new GWSkype app will always make the Skype service available to blind and visually impaired computer users regardless of new versions of Skype that are released. The GWSkype app is a Window-Eyes app and demonstrates the power of Window-Eyes apps unmatched by any of its competitors. As Christmas is approaching, GW Micro is releasing the GWSkype app to all blind and visually impaired users who are running Windows at no cost. So, even a consumer not running Window-Eyes can still download and use the GWSkype app. We believe that this is a special time of year and we want to give back, said Weirich. GWSkype is a special gift from GW Micro to all blind and visually impaired users of Windows. The GWSkype app can be downloaded at http://www.gwmicro.com/apps/gwskype. You can download the GWSkype live webinar and product demonstration at www.gwmicro.com/podcast. GW Micro has been a trusted pioneer in the adaptive technology industry since 1990, and continues to lead with innovative, customer driven solutions. SkypeT is a trademark of Skype Technologies S.A. Re: [AI] Screen Readers: Maintaining careful listening for long time?
Braille is the solution for all your problems. If we buy such units in bulk, the cost will be reduced definitely. - Original Message - From: Amar Jain amarjain2...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, November 07, 2011 10:01 AM Subject: [AI] Screen Readers: Maintaining careful listening for long time? Dear All, Looking for experts’ views in this matter. This problem relates to my study as well. We understand the fact that we heavily rely on audio since we use screen readers. Now when you have to work with them for long hours, and at the same time you have to maintain careful reading, so that you don’t end up missing the most tricky things. Given the fact that I am in one of those field where every single word has its own value, I am at great loss if after some time, my same power of concentration starts reducing. (Please understand the fact that it is not that I am not able to comprehend the things, nor it is so that screen readers miss the things due to fast speed, nor it is so that since I use Jaws at 62% (109) with all punctuations, I am missing the things.) In such a case, what is happening is that since the audio is keep playing, sometimes you feel that you are getting the whole thing fit in your brains, but actually some of the minutest detail you start missing. (they just pass through your ears but details do not process in your brain). Please note, word is ‘minutest’. Reduction in speed is not a good solution, nor I can afford taking frequent breaks (specially when I start working). Switching to speakers instead of headphones can be temporary solution till the time I don’t enter in my job. What solutions you all apply in such situations? I feel specially those who are into proof reading can suggest me some solution of this problem. But that doesn’t mean that I am excluding others from giving their views. If my problem is understood at the appropriate level and if it is taken in right way, then I am sure to see a very healthy discussion on this point. And I know this fact that there will be many who must have faced this problem, whether they realize it or not, that is all together a different issue. Look forward for some solution. To read hindi text with NVDA, press NVDA + n, go to preferences submenu then voice settings and select Hindi. Now you can read hindi text. To write text with NVDA, one extra step is to change region and language under format tab in control panel to hindi(india). Now open MS Word, press left alt+ shift to toggle between hindi and english font. Enjoy! Regards, Jyotsna On 10/27/11, Shona Man shonam...@gmail.com wrote: I think e-speak will be fine with NVDA. It would be a welcome move. - Original Message - From: Prashant Ranjan Verma pr_ve...@hotmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, October 31, 2011 9:57 PM Subject: Re: [AI] Some solution: How to over come the problem when we are ina restoront. Dear all, I have some sort of solution to offer for problems faced by the visually impaired in restaurants. We all know that blind low vision people have to depend upon their sighted friends for reading out the menu or they just ask the waiter who may not read out all the options. Overall, visually impaired are not able to enjoy the eating out experience. We have prepared a Popular Restaurants Menu Guide which contains complete menus of major restaurant chains such as McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Dominos, KFC, UDIPI, Sagar Ratna etc. One can look up this menu at home before giving an order for home delivery or when in the restaurant look up the menu in the mobile phone. I will provide it as a DAISY Talking Book easy to read HTML format during the Accessindia convention. Please do not ask for it now, I have to give some finishing touches and it will be ready just before the convention. Afterwards I will make it available for download. Another reason for this initiative is the fact that although most restaurants offer their menu on the internet, unfortunately their websites are not accessible. Their webpages carry attractive pictures of the dishes which is not easily readable with screen reader. Hope it will be of use to many and others will also create similar guides for covering more restaurants and places. Re: [AI] Forgot Password?
Very interesting. - Original Message - From: Shadab Husain shadab...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Sunday, January 23, 2011 11:11 AM Subject: [AI] Forgot Password? RANDOM THOUGHTS Forgot Password? Creating a web account is no big deal. Can someone say keeping track of passwords is as easy as that, asks Indu Balachandran Last week, someone asked me for my mobile phone number. A mild panic set in. Give me yours, I'll give you a missed call. I said. But that cruel person caught on. Aha! Forgotten your own number, have you? It happens, it happens. Well the reason why numbers are refusing to stay in my head any more is because they have been slowly edged out of their residence in the left side of my cranium by a number of intruders, and these intruders are called Passwords. There are so many of them jostling for space, all yelling Remember me! Remember me! that I am wondering where to go and get extra RAM space in my brain. Only then will I ever keep track of my Yahoo password, my ATM password, my online railway booking password, my Credit Card protected password , my Cheap Airline Ticket password, my Movie Ticket Booking password, my Theatre Club password, my Investments Portfolio password, and not forgetting, my dead pet cat's name. Some sites even ask you for that. Those days When computers first entered our lives, it was all so different: I had only one password to let me into the exciting cyber-world. It was so easy to remember (perhaps because my password was ingeniously called PASSWORD). Those eight letters would magically gain me entry to my mail. Soon I kept the very same password for every new website I discovered. But a geek pal of mine was horrified that I had a password called PASSWORD in the first place. What a ridiculous thing! Even a moron could hack into that, change it at once!! So I picked a good four-letter word. (The word in fact was GOOD, not what you just thought of). But suddenly, those stern doormen at these gates of entry got annoying. Your password must have at least 2 numerals said one. Oh no! So I decided to do some numerology to see which numbers I could choose. I went to a Numerology website for this, but first I had to enrol. And guess what it asked for? Yes, that's right. Fed up of always hitting the Forgot Password? button to get anywhere, I decided one day that there'd be no more fancy passwords for me. My name would be my password. So under Type your new Password here I put my own name. A rude red message started flashing immediately: TOO OBVIOUS! These cyber-doormen who check our passwords were getting increasingly judgemental, even cheeky. So I randomly looked around, and picked a name from the TIME cover lying next to me. OBAMA I typed. TOO WEAK! was the prompt response. Obama? Weak? The American people were not going to like that. Ok then, how about just GOD. Too short! it said. I tried to make that OH-GOD, exactly what I had just exclaimed. Try something better! said the mean message again. Now who could be better than God? This went on and on, till I finally made up a very rare combination of letters and numbers in a secret mystifying code that even Dan Brown would have gone crazy trying to crack. You did it! CONGRATS. Your Password has been successfully CHANGED! flashed on my screen. I was flush with triumph. There was even a sweet smiley button on the screen that winked at me twice. The trouble is: with all that exhilaration of getting it right at last, I forgot to write down this amazing password I had just invented. So I've got to hit Forgot Password? and start all over again. But forgetting a password can be useful sometimes. I was overjoyed at an email I received once from a certain ISSAKA BANGU from Nigeria, promising me $4,000,000,00 from an African bank , just by giving him my Bank Account and Password. I suddenly couldn't remember what it was, in all my excitement. And that story has a happy ending; I wasn't rendered bankrupt by day's end. But I am sure I am better than my pal Tina with this password thing in computers. And when Tina can't figure out something she never hesitates to ask Customer Care for help. This is what happened to her: Customer Care: What's on your monitor now, ma'am? Tina: The smiling picture of me next to the Pyramids in Egypt. Customer Care: Er, well, what I meant is: what stage are you in logging into the internet? Tina: I typed in a Password but nothing happened. Customer Care: Are you sure you used the right password? Tina: Yes, I'm sure. I did exactly what I've seen all my colleagues do. Customer Care: Can you tell me what password you typed in? Tina: Sure. Six dots. Meanwhile, I must tell my pal Tina that she and I are not alone in our confusion over Passwords. Here's what I read about this woman who was asked why she had such a long password: mickeydonaldtomjerrylaurelhardylondon. Apparently she was

Harish one thing I would like to have is a comparison between the information given by talks 5 and by mobilespeak. That way we would know how much advantage we would have with mobilespeak versus using it with talks. In other words, is using it with talks good enough or is there a substantial improvement using it with mobilespeak. This information would be very helpful.
