[AI] The Incredible Voice of Helen Keller
Colleagues, I believe almost everyone of us on the list knows fully well, and at some point of time got inspired by, the challenging life of Helen keller. But very few of us, I am sure, would have ever got a chance to hear her speak. Here's that rare opportunity to hear incredible voice. Titled The Light of a Brighter Day'', her message was broadcasted during the 1950s, which is archived by an educative project called This I believe. Here's the URL: http://thisibelieve.org/essay/16702/ JAWSNVDA users may use the following navigation keys which are hitherto popular anyway: 1. You can open the link either by clicking enter directly on the URL given above or by copy-pasting it in your browser's address-bar. 2. To jump directly to the text of the message, you can press Number1 key on the number-row, not on the number-pad. 3. To listen to the audio, press letter B 3 or 4 times until you reach the option, play/pause, and hit enter or space-bar there. Best! Re: [AI] eloquence for nvda
This has been our understanding so far. Now that the NVDA itself comes bundled with Eloquence, shouldn't we treat it something official? At least, NVDA 2014.2 is packaged with with Eloquence by default. We really don't know the intricacies and the latest developments. What we know for long is that Eloquence is owned by the FreedomScientific, but there seem to be interesting moves on this front in the recent past. Can anybody closely involved with the NVDA development shed some light on thisc ' ; please? Re: [AI] Netscape Dispatch WNT
Yes, in fact the annoying issue with Firefox has been continuously haunting the screen-reader users almost from the release of version 19.0 or so. I am not sure whether the following prescription would work accurately enough, but it's worth experimenting with: 1. Generally when your screen-reader refuses to read the text and other visible elements in a browser, press Alt+D, and you'll be taken to the address-bar. In the case of internet explorer, press shift+tabonce and you'll get back into the visible area. If it's fire fox, you may have to press the same shift+tab thrice. 2. While installing the Mozilla Firefox, we should ensure to allow the starting wizard to copy our Internet Explorer settings. This would make the Firefox to emulate the lay out of the IE to a large extent, making the navigation accessible. Best! Re: [AI] Netscape Dispatch WNT
Great to hear that! It is true that Firefox is proving to be far better an accessible browser than other browsing applications, particularly when used with NVDA. But the major issue with it is that it sometimes behaves quite strangely, becoming unstable for reasons beyond our comprehension. But let me confess that I am an all-time fan of Internet Explorer. IE 10 and above is extremely responsive. Of course, I am equally appreciative of the Firefox, and the kind of rich options it can offer you, despite being freely available. Sent from Windows Mail From: Bhavya shah Sent: Tuesday, 27 May 2014 07:54 PM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Hi. I restarted the browser and it is working perfectly fine now. What was that Netscape Dispatch WNT anyway? Also, I don't think that one should let Firefox import settings from Internet Explorer, because these days Mozilla Firefox is much better in terms of accessibility than any other web browser. Even before the Netscape Dispatch WNT issue, I frequently used the Alt + D and then Shift + Tab technique due to unknown reasons. Also, I hope that the Netscape Dispatch WNT doesn't bother me in the future. Thank you very much. Re: [AI] eloquence for nvda
Dear Jyothi, Once the NVDA is installed, you should first go to the list of synthesisers and select eloquence. If you haven't done it before, the shortcut key to list out the synthesisers is insert+control+S. Simply enter on eloquence. Only then would Eloquence appear in Voices. Re: [AI] urgent help needed on helping one of our visually impaired friend come out of his home as his family is torturing him a lot.
Dear Akshun, I am in full agreement with you in supposing that unless the victim under question is brave enough to stand for his decision, none of us can really be of much use. I was only pointing out that since the boy seems to have been caught up in four walls, some of us may intervene and see if some relief can be provided. Hi Access-Indians, It's been almost a couple of years since I have last written on Access-India, and perhaps an year or so for me to follow the discussions here! Re: [AI] about jaws cursor on labtop
Hi, in most cases, the lay-out of your labtop is what matters most. as some of friends have already suggested, you can actually use caps lock-on and lock-off as your Jaws Key, but in certain events, especially if you're using HP Labtop, it mightn't work. following can be the universal method for activating your jaws curser. hold on the second left bottom key in your key-board and press Slash, which is located left to your right shift key. to activate your PC--curser again, hold on the same left bottom-key and press Semi-Colon. I hope this works! Re: [AI] Free Disk Space.
Hi Anubha, please follow these simple steps to check the storage status of any disc on your computer: 1. place the curser on a disc/drive of which you wish to know the free space and used space. 2. hold on Alt Key and press enter. 3. now a dialogue-box, showing you the properties of that drive/disc, opens up. since the entire information shown in the dialogue box is not accessible to PC curser, you've to turn on the JAWS Curser by pressing the right top-most key on your number-pad. Note: you must first num-lock off before you'll activate the JAWS curser as a prime-condition. hope you'll see your free space now! Re: [AI] Who are the totally blind persons working in the field ofLaw?
Hi Amar, probably, I would also be talking on the same lines of Pranay from Eyeway. but the important thing I wish to add is to enquire the institute as to on what basis are they specifying their admissions only to Low-vision. if you can, please also send me their notification in which they've particularly stated that their admissions are open to only low-vision persons. we, on behalf of JNU visually-challenged forum, can write to them asking to send us the proper explanation, and include the same illegitimate notification into our charter of demands which we're planning to submit to UGC soon. by the way, Sweet Advocate Supriya doesn't fall under the category of low-vision. her vision is very limited to the extent I know her. since the notification, if it is in the same format as you kept this list informed, will be null and void as per the existing guidelines of higher education. we've to fight legally rather than going through general examples. Hi Amar, check with NLIU what is their criteria for low vision. the pwd act does not give any specific magnitude of eyesight between which it would call a person as low vision. but PWD act defines blindness. So as per its definition, if a person has some vision which does not exceed 6/60 or 20 degrees in the better eye after correction, then such a person would be certified as blind and not low vision. so i think you should not go by the ordinary knowledge of whether a person can see something or not. Re: [AI] Jaws in Hindi language
Hello sir, that's really a haunting good news we all have been expecting for long! it's news of a great lease especially for University students and certain employees. we hope freedomscientific will ensure to incorporate all other original features into the Hindi version of JAWS. given the vast amount of Hindi fonts in use being written in different styles, Freedomscientific should try to make the impending version recognise as many of them as possible. I personally hope the other indian languages too will follow the suit! Re: [AI] Sangeeta TTS for Jaws Required.
Hi, Sangeeta is a text to speech Engine developed by Freedomscientific Group in colaberation with real solo speak company. they claim that this particular speech engine is designed especially for indian jaws users as the accent this engine uses is little closer to indian english accent. but at least for me, sucha claim seems to be half-understood part. I've installed Sangeeta on my computer and used it for some time. the quality of its reading isn't really good. one of the biggest problems with Sangeeta is its disrespect of punctuation marks. it doesn't behave well with punctuation marks. you can use it anyway for a change, but not as a permanent speech engine. once after the installation, you've to select sappy-5 speech synthesiser, and from there you can select Sangeeta voice and try it. this speech, once after installation, will also be available even for your kurzweil software, if you're using it. hope this helps! Re: [AI] accessible Mp3 converter?
Hi, as far as MP3 Converters are concerned, there are plenty available. however, they're all not really accessible. Sound-Forge is one of the widely acclaimed Mp3 Converters popularly used by many. Version-8 of the Sound-Forge has recently been released. . although the bugs aren't really great, its accessibility is little complicated. GoldWave is another most popular MP3 Converter, for which, even Jaws Scripts are available. Gold-Wave 5 is currently available for download. once after downloading the software from its publishers, you can look for Jaws Scripts and begin enjoying your convertions. the jaws scripts developed for Gold-Wave also have a good easily understandable help file as well. for any other details including downloading information , you can contact me directly at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I hope the information provided is helpful! Re: [AI] Information is required about Hindu news paper website
Hi Vijay, since RSS is neither a software nor a special application, you don't have specifically look for it on any website. infact, RSS is a small piece of coaded URL designed to enable us to directly connect specific text on a given web-page. if you are using Internet Explorer 7.0 or above, subscribing to RSS Feed on a web isn't a problem at all. however, if the brouser you are using is below version 7.0, you'll then have to download special RSS Reader from the net. there are several websites offering free download of RSS Reader. you should excuse me for not being able to give you the full details of these websites, as I am little tightened up with my End Semester exams. please leave me a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] so that I can provide you with the full details after may 2nd. with regards! Re: [AI] Problem with my H.P. scanner-please help me
Hi Vijay, you might have got the first problem because of in-complete installation of the OCR Software. when you install HP, you should wait until it will ask you to plug in the Scanner cable, and then complete the subsequent steps of installation. if you install only the software and immediately try to work out with the scanner without following the post-software installation procedure, the problem you faced become inevitable. that problem solved, however, scanning pictures with the help of Jaws shouldn't be a big problem. by default, HP Creates a folder in your My-Computer folder. it should sound something like: HP 2400. you simply focus your curser on this particular Icon, and press Applications Key. you will then be prompted by different options, among which you can choose one. for any reason, if you won't be able to find HP Icon in my computers folder, please check it out in your Programmes Sub-menu. you'll here have HP Sub-menu, and use it for all purposes through JAWS. I hope this will solve the problem! Re: [AI] Courses for creative writing
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Date: Sun, 16 Mar 2008 15:01:39 +0530 Subject: Re: [AI] Courses for creative writing JNU doesn't have a specific centre for creative writing or journalism courses. Some centres like the Centre for English Studies and the Centre for Indian languages do offer such courses, but they are part of their main subjects such as English or Urdu. However, Indian Institute of Mass Comunication (IIMC), located in the JNU campus, primarily offers journalism courses. As for internet and other accessibility for the visually chalenged, I'm not very sure, because hardly any visually challenged person has got admission there, to my knowledge. But one can always make one's way in and put forth one's accessibility requirements. One's being in the JNU campus will also help to some extent, though not completely. - Original Message - From: Shadab Husain [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Saturday, March 15, 2008 9:57 AM Subject: [AI] Courses for creative writingHi friends, I wanted to know about the courses of creative writing in journalism. I heard that Jamia Milia University has a very good course for this. But how is the arrangement for blinds there? Please tell me. Also, at JNU there would be some good courses, so I will request to people teaching and studying there to tell me about it. I am eagerly looking for your suggestions. And please tell me that whether I will be able to access the internet wherever I got admission. I will be very happy to get your suggestions. Please be quick as last date would be near. Besides, if you have any other institutions for creative writing then you are most welcome to tell me. I am sincerely trusting a reply. With best wishes, Shadab Husain To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. I have been a student in JNU, and thought would tell you few things about JNU. as someone has already responded previously, JNU doesn't have any specific course for creative writing , but to the best of my little information, you can come to JNU for M.A. at Center for the study of english language. infact, for the last few days, opportunities too for those completing their post-graduation at this center are knocking their doors. as far as accessibility and technology infrastructure is concerned, JNU is one of the very few institutes providing reasonably sophisticated facilities. we have a separate Unit called Helen-KellerUnit for visually-challenged located in the main library of JNU. library is kept open from nine in the morning till eleven-thirty in the night, except on some important national festivals. you can enjoy the academic culture here, if you are really interested in. since you are particularly enthusiastic about journalism or creative writing, Asian school of journalism and communications at Chennai could be another best option for you. however, you cannot expect much infrastructural facilities as not many visually-challenged have so far joined there as per the information available. let me also inform you that the date for applying at JNU for the academic year 2008-2009 has already been closed, and if at all you have to try for it, you'll have to wait till the next year, and there is no other option. please be little alert as other institues will also be coming up with the notification schedules. I have seen recently in the news that central University of english and foreign languages Hyderabad, earlier known as central institute of english and foreign languages, is also going to offer a journalism course from this year onwards. please get track of them, and enter the field of your choice. for any further information, you can always mail me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ More immediate than e-mail?
