  Hi Everyone,
I have been talking a lot with my friends in various spaces; about the
inaccessibility of mobile apps, and the wonderful work Mission Accessibility
has been doing on that front, to bring about change. Friends, who are either
employed with some ofthe companies we've been trying to reach, or some where
they think they may be able to facilitate contact, have offered to try and help
reach relevant persons, and weigh in on them about the issue.
For that, one of my friends, has created a simple Google form to be able to
understand which companies to get to, in order of priority, to get going. I
request everyone to please answer this simple survey, so we can have another
avenue to get to those who won't listen to us easily enough.

Better to go with banks like union bank of india it is not just cost

Currently i am holding my current account with hdfc but have made my mind
to switch.
Hdfc bank is accessible on web and ios ap also works nicely.
They will give you net banking and debit card.
Cheque book can also be issued if you are able to sign otherwise every
cheque will be valid only after varification by the manager.

Hi there,
Appreciations for the initiative.
Tested the app on 1plus device and Would like to raise few concerns on the
I mobile android app.

1. after the authentication, 2 buttons are presented which is labelled as
interstitial and unlabelled button. These buttons must have the proper and
meaningful label.
2. unable to pay the credit card bill under the cards and forex section.
The pay current due button does not get the keyboard/gesture focus.

3. the links which are provided under the homepage must have the labels.
4. the users should have an option to change the session timeout to read
and understand the content on the page.

5. there should be no lag while entering the pin on the transaction page.
Hope the issues will be get fixed on the next update.

Subject: [AI] Regarding accessibility issues with Axis Bank

Dear all,
I am writing this in the context of my experience with the Axis Bank
online banking system. I happen to be a credit card only user of Axis
Bank. Axis has 2 basic channels for online banking the Axis Bank
website, and the Axis Mobile App on Android and IOS platforms.
For some reasons, Axis hasn't allowed me to register for online
banking on the website, each time I tried to register online, the
system said my customer ID was invalid. On asking, the customer care
had no clear idea as to why this was happening, though someone in the
sales department speculated that they allow only account holders to
use the web interface and CC only users have only the mobile app. On
asking around among users though, I came across CC only users using
online banking on Axis website.
I was using the Axis Mobile app on Android. At the outset when I
started using the app, it was, like many banking apps, not a hundred
percent in terms of accessibility. There were significant issues, but
if you've been around Android a bit, then you could kind of use most
features.
However, I recently found out that after an update, the app has broken
accessibility completely. There is no interaction whatsoever with
on-screen content as far as TalkBack is concerned. It doesn't read any
controls, just doesn't read anything really on the screen, no matter
you touch and explore or swipe. It is the first time that I have come
across a 100 percent inaccessible banking app, that too from a major
bank in the country.
Anyone else facing similar issues with Axis Bank? Any workarounds?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Harish ji and all,
How accessible is the Bhim app? Of course mobile wallets are a major
benefit for us, particularly after the note changes that have made it
difficult to identify notes. With wallets, no need to identify notes,
no need to scramble for change, and the process is easy with wallets
like Paytm and Mobikwik. They both have come a long way in terms of
accessibility, there could possibly be the odd button or 2 or region
or 2 that may create some issues with TalkBack, but effectively they
are very much accessible. But since the Bhim app is brought out by
Government of India, and comes with more possibilities of instant
transfer, would like to give it a go. But my experience with apps from
the government in recent times have been pretty poor, whether that is
LIC India or the National Pension Scheme NPS. So would like to know,
how accessible is the Bhim app?

The Smart Wallet
BY MAMTA SHARMA
EARLY THIS YEAR, when I moved from Mumbai to Chennai, language posed a
great
barrier. It was difficult to call a cab and pay for a ride without
help.
Then Ola Money, the taxi-hailing company Ola's digital wallet app,
saved

the
day. I simply had to load it with money using net banking or my
credit/debit
card, and the app was ready to go. On reaching my destination, I paid
my

fare digitally. It was instant and without the hassles of swiping my
card,
keying in a 16-digitnumber or logging on to a bank's website involving
OTPs.
I soon learnt this wallet could do much more-it could help pay phone
bills,
book flight tickets, order a pizza and even transfer money to another
Ola

Money account.
"Unlike in the West, the Indian economy is culturally cash-intensive.
So

we'd often prefer to make small payments-say from Rupees 10 to a few
hundred
rupees-by cash," says Mukul Shrivastava, partner, fraud investigation
and
dispute services, Ernst & Young, Mumbai. "The newfound comfort of using
a

digital wallet has a lot to do with our ease with smartphones. These
wallets
are simple to use and offer the convenience of technology in your
palm,"

he
adds. With increasing smartphone penetration and easy access to the
internet, this digital payment option is rapidly catching on. A recent
study
by Google and the Boston Consulting Group forecasts that India's
digital

payment industry is likely to be worth $500 billion by 2020. Already,
mobile
wallet companies like Paytm, MobiKwik, Citrus, Freecharge, PayU and
others
have been making our life easier. Recent Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
data
show that payments made through mobile wallets have increased from
Rupees

29.05 million in 2013-14 to Rupees 205.84 million in 2015-16 and have
surpassed mobile banking in terms of volume.
If you haven't tried them, you should. Here's a quick guide to digital
wallets that will help you use them better.
How do you get started?
Several e-commerce and telecom companies offer digital wallets. All you
need
to do is log on to their website on your computer or download their app
on
your smartphone, sign up with your email or mobile number and transfer
funds
to your wallet using net banking, IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) or
your
credit/debit card. Once the money is in your wallet you are all set.
Types of wallets: There are three kinds of wallets-closed, semi-closed
and
open.
A closed wallet is issued by a company for buying goods and services
exclusively from it. For example, MakeMyTrip's MyWallet helps you

hello,
i really appreciate the functioning of this app. recently, there was
one notice displayed in my office on the board and i didn't had anyone
to read to me the said notice at that time. so started feelong

my mobile camera on this notice and red the entire notice with your
app.

so this is surely a very efficient app for the people with visual
impairment. since this is the free app, to support your efforts and to
compensate the cost involved in developing this app, you can generate
the donation link on the playstore itself. in addition, you can also
prepare one write up about this app and circulate amongst your
acquaintances. if such kind of write up is already prepared by you, do
circulate with me as well and will try to get you the donation for
this app.

wish you hearty congratulations and all the best for your work

hi.
i would suggest the following.
1. go to ebay and get a windows 7 oem licence key.
the key is cheaper then a normal key.
then you will have to put the windows 10 pendrive or dvd and format your
pc.

when it asks for a key just put the oem key that you got.
but upgrading from xp to 10 is a big learning curve so be ready for it.

You have mentioned some very commonly used apps above. People will more
than happy to use them with your guidance. It's better for us that you
make some audio tutorials on them. I have started using Paytm recently. I
had to struggle a lot initially. But, if I had some tutorial on it, the

Dear Ajai,
Generating a receipt by POS machine does not confirm the receipt of
payment. Sometimes amount is deducted from customers account but
transaction gets failed due to server problem. In above case the POS
machine generates transaction failed receipt which we have to give to
customer as a proof of unsuccessful transaction. We experience same
thing on online payment as amount get deducted from our account but
the online store does not receive the payment. This is very common
with IRCTC web site.
Bhawani sir, in today’s competitive market we have to give that
payment options which are comfortable to customer, swiping the card is
commonly accepted method of cashless transaction.

Hi friends,
till now this topic is discussed only from the point of view of blind
customer or amount sender only. What about the small business runner
who suffers from blindness?
the swipe machine or POS machine installed in there shop is not at all
accessible. Even you cant memorize the steps to accept the payment as
the software of these machines are periodically updated due to
security reasons, which makes the accepting process different with
each update. Moreover some times due to card failure or network
failure a blind shop owner does not come to know that whether the
payment received successfully or not.

regarding the 64bit vs 32 bit fight on 64bit you can run all softwares
weather made for 32 bit or 64 bit.
32 bit is going slowly out of support
the only part that u must take care is if there are some softwares
made particularly for 32 or 64 bit you have to run the version of
software according to the bit.
e.g jaws 32 bit will not install on a 64 bit
some 32 bit antiviruses will not install on 64bit also for drivers
like chipset different drivers are available for 64 bit.
regarding the question by Bhavya for a new laptop the laptop that i
use and suggested doesnt have a dvd drive.
this has 2 or 3 benifits.
1. the laptop is thin and lite wait
2. 1 more less part that can fail.
3. you get some extra battery life as the part is not powered on at all.
yes dvd drives without disk go to standby but still some power is
taken by the opening arm the light and lence.
regarding no tension of slipping my suggested laptop has mat finished
just like moto g2 but its more rougher than that
on the cover and on the inside.
it also has a spill resistent keyboard and trackpad.
and speakers are just explosive loud.
when i went for the laptop i was scared as its for 19000 almost and in
so less what i will get but when i got the laptop i was shocked on
speed and features
but you will have to install windows on your own and also you have to
use wifi or usb 3g or lte dongle as there is no rj45 ithernet port or
you can get an external ithernet adaptor for about 200 on flipkart or
120 to 150 on shops in lamington road.
with the screen off i mean projected to a non existent second screen a
9hr battery backup is what you get.
however if you can tweek advance settings in windows u can extend to
10.3hrs to 11hrs and i have done that.

aluminium body is robust as always, but that makes it extremely bulky,
close to five kgs.
I will be looking up all the Del laptop model suggestions made here on
Flipkart and elsewhere for my own research, but two practical
questions to end users - how robust and sturdy is the physical
material and components of the laptop and what is its weight and
portability level?
I was absolutely confused over the past few days with the quantity of

Subject: [AI] jaws announcements on focussed table elements

Hello,
This is regarding jaws announcement while creating, editing and
selecting the table elements. I am teaching someone who is at the
beginner stage and learning to work in word 2003.

He has jaws 16 installed with windows 8 on his machine. I have set his
jaws verbosity at the beginner level. Typing echo to word and and
screen echo to highlighted.

Now suppose, he would like to create the table in his word document.
So he first Press Alt-A to pull down the Table menu. Now, in this
menu, selected the table option under insert submenu. Now, in the
insert table dialog box, specified the number of columns and rows and
pressed enter on ok button. here focus directly goes inside the table
menu but jaws does not announces the focus information. Here for
example, it should announce like
Uniform table 1 column 1 row 1 of 2 table 1.

Same case happens when we select any table elements under table menu
to insert or delete the columns or rows and after pressing enter,
jaws should announce the focus information as
uniform table column 1 row 1 table 1.

Rather it announces something else as section 1 has 1 page header, edit

So to announce each time I am changing my focus in table as above,
after I select or insert or delete any rows, it should announce like
Uniform table, column 2 of 4 row 1 of 2 and so on.

Kindly suggest the way out.

Hope I am able to make you understand my concern.

If not clear, kindly get back.

who are the vendors? what would be the cost for installing a domestic system

Hi

Interestingly, I have just commissioned a 60 Kilo watt solar power plant
at my office.

This is the largest solar power generation at our office. Our power
requirements are are far greater than our generation. Which means that all
the power generated by solar is consumed. The additional power requirement
is taken from the regular state provided power grid. The whole process is
automated and straightforward. It synchronises with it all extremely well.
We run very high end and highly critical servers.

It will continue to give steady power for at least 25 years. It should do
good for another 10 more years. There is almost zero maintainence cost and
only cleaning of the solar panel with water to clean the dust accumulating
over it in about 2 weeks. This would be just about 30 minutes work in 2
weeks. Nothing more.
The initial cost is high but it would break even in about 7 years at the
present electricity charge. If it rises, then the pay back will be still
earlier. Thereafter your power is absolutely free.

When we can be using in a highly sensitive place, you can safely run any
electronic or electrical device.

We are having 200 panels each producing 300 watts of power.
Interesting, in states like Karnataka, you can sell your extra power to
the state grid and earn revenue.
In summary, if your production is less than consumption, the difference
can be drawn from the grid. If your generation is more than your
consumption, you can earn revenue by selling the power to the grid.
I don't see any problem for a blind person to clean the panels which is
placed on the terrace of your house.
Any interesting part is the whole process is modular. You can
progressively keep increasing your generation as and when you can afford
it. they will all work in a cohesive way.
You can get a daily report on a browser. I have yet to check on the
accessibility of the standard report.

There are many Indian vendors from whom you can by the system.

I had taken lead in having this system and was involved in every stage of
the project.

I suppose this would clear any queries. You can write to me directly if
some got missed.

Hello everyone at the AccessIndia mailing list.

I have the following queries--- some general and some blindness-related:

Are there any solar-powered room heaters, air conditioners, ceiling fans,
refrigerators, or any others of the common home appliances? If so, which
items? And, who are the international manufacturers of these items?

Where on the Internet can I download the Bharati Urdu braille code in PDF
format?

Is there any individual or organisation in India who can donate braille
books in the Urdu language?

Is there any website from India which offers audio books --- in Hindi,
Urdu, Punjabi, or English --- for free download?

Last but not the least, how good is the latest version of JAWS for
accessing mathematical content --- either in PDF documents or on the
Internet?

Regards.

laptops come with atom processors and I have little knowledge about

are very useful while using JAWs, therefore please guide.

Configuration:

Intel core processor 5-7
Ram memory 4-8 (Preference to 8)
Memory 500 minimum (Not a huge priority due to a hard disk)
Proper keyboard outlay
Budget = 30-50K

DO please let know any experience you’ve recently went through while

So try to find a good life partner for her and make her future bright.

Re: [AI] How to rename a file in MSW

2007-08-08 Thread P L Verma
First of all focus on the file you want to rename.
Without opening the file, press the Application key- then up arrow a couple
of times and you will
hear Rename. Press enter and , press the back space button to remove the
current file
name. Now type the new name and press enter.
That's all there is to it.
The same procedure can be adopted for Music files etc.

Sometimes, in my work, I have to re-name a file in MS Word. And until
recently I thought Alt+F+A as the way to do it; only that, while doing
this, I end up creating an extra file, which I don't need to. Are there
other ways of renaming a Word file without having to create a separate
 one? Kindly throw some light.

 Hi Subramani

Although I personally don't like to use a head phone, I rescently happend
 to
see a headphone which was less irritating.

The headphone rests on your ear, and one has to wear it, similarly, to
 wearing a spectacles.

You can also wear both the spectacles and this earphone as well.

Quite a chilling stuff. BTW, I hope some of you remember my enquiries a
few months ago about the effects of head phone usage, as I have been
using headphones at my work place.

I experienced very severe ear pains for sometime and with my wife's
advice, had replaced the ordinary headphone with a
noice-cancellation-based one, which also has a volume control system.
Now, though it isn't entirely alright, I feel much comfortable.

 Subject: Hearing loss.

Dear Harish, Please find the information below on the above subject.
I feel since most blind use headphones, this item could be useful. If
you feel so, please send the information to the AI list. About 8 years
ago, I saw a TV news program alerting that a college
student came to an ear specialist. The attending doctor shook his
head because he couldn't find the reason or cause of the young
patient who was losing his hearing capability rapidly.

The young man visited several hospitals seeking for help, because he
 nearly lost his hearing capability.

Responding to the TV news, one of private research institute offered
to study the young man in exchange with publication in a certain
 company advertisement.

The research group conducted the case and concluded that the college
student was a music lover who was using high fidelity loudspeaker
amplifiers. Since the time he enjoyed listening jazz and pop music
with the latest model of amplifier, he became the victim of modern
 life.

Some amplifiers produce strange sounds or frequencies that destroy
several parts of the body. Once again, the news went around and many
inquires came to several research groups.

Yes, we knew now that many headphone users among music lovers are
 reportedly having some hearing difficulties.

We believe that some frequencies and loud sounds coming from the
earphones make the eardrum to be thickened reducing hearing
capabilities. Most patients who have difficulties in hearing are due
to them using portable music players like the above photo, especially
at high frequency and middle frequency of about 400 Hz and lower
frequency of about 100 Hz below. We understood that eardrums do not
respond nor vibrate due to the thickening of eardrums, and this is
one of the new strains of illness in modern age.

There is nothing wrong with portable music players. It is only
because users set their music players to a high volume that can
destroy their eardrum. That is how doctors comment.

However, in some cases of music lover who lost almost all his hearing
capability was not only because of loud sound. Some loud sound Hi-Fi
amplifiers produce strange sounds or frequencies that destroy not
only eardrums but also internal organs. Do you believe that?

Re: [AI] norton

Only yesterday, my vendor installed QUICK HEAL and since then, JAWS is
behaving oddly.
After booting, JAWS should start talking but it only says JAWS is ready and
then, there is total silence.
I have to try all sort of things like pressing insert plus J, control plus
alt J or press Windows key M then press J on the Desk top and then press
enter. After all this struggle, JAWS may come on.
Can anyone advise is to what is wrong and how to rectify the problem?
Outlook Express is also affected.
From the Message list to go to the various folders, I press tab and then the
hot key. Jaws takes a long time to announce that I have landed on the
particular folder .
Another problem I am facing somewhat from before is that my dial up
connection is getting disconnected time and time again which is very
frustrating. My technical knowledge is limited so someone please help.

[AI] New Software

2007-02-22 Thread P L Verma
http://www.robotiker.com/ ),

Software is being developed to allow vision impaired people to read

information on the digital display screens of electronic household

products and at supermarket checkouts, a Spanish company has

announced.

The DISPLAYER will allow vision impaired users to read everyday

information displays including dynamic displays, such as those on

microwaves, digital clocks, boilers and those found at public transport

stations and supermarket checkouts.

The device would ultimately take the form of software or an

application that could be installed on a smartphone or personal digital

assistant (PDA) with a built-in camera. To read something on a

display, users would hold the mobile device near it, capture an image

of it and the system would interpret and read the content aloud using

speech output technology.

To help them capture the image of the display, said Igone Idígoras

Leibar, Principal Researcher at Robotiker-Tecnalia

(

http://www.robotiker.com/ ),

the Spanish company behind the technology. It orientates the user

with [speech output], for example, it would say 'on the image there is

no display' or 'move the camera to the right so that the display

appears,'.

User testing with vision impaired people is due to start shortly. Our

idea is that the end users participate [in the development], not only at

the end of the project but from the initial stages that we are now at,

Leibar said. Tests have begun to ensure the device is usable in various

lighting conditions, carried out by over 80 people using 500 appliances

in their homes using different types of digital camera.

Last October the DISPLAYER project won the top award of 240,000

Euros in a competition run by Spain's national blindness organisation

ONCE to recognise technology research projects helping vision-

impaired people. ONCE has undertaken to test and evaluate the final

prototype, due to be ready in 2008.

In Urdu, I believe there is a more refined word - 'Nabina'.

As far as I can understand the meaning of this word by breaking it
etymologically, (bay plus basar), it appears to mean the one who is
without
shelter, an equally problematic word. So, I would still insist that word
and
their meanings are all problematic and one should not feel hurt by any of
these words or their implications. These are all pparts of myths created
by
the mainstream segments of society to segregate us. The solution would be
to
rather not avoid such words and try to present ourselves better to
society.
Avoiding such words will lead us to nowhere.

well the same thing in pakistan
i mean, many people seem to be using the word andha as a literary
word
in Urdu, whereas the most suitable words in Urdu is baybaser, which
  should
be used in place of Andha.
such harsh words do hurt a great deal

The literal translation of the English word blind would be Andha in
  Hindi,
which indeed, most of us would not like to hear from anybody as it is
construed as one of the uncivilized and a very rude word, especially
when
  it
comes to explaining our disability. Another important thing is that the
  word
blind carries a much more wider connotation just as the word Andha in
  Hindi
does, one can be blind by mind, blind by understanding, so on and so
  forth.
If I'm not mistaken, our so called super star Amitab Bachan, while
giving
  a
brief description about the Braille script in one of the episodes of
KBC
also used the word Andha and not Drishtiheen, which would sound much
more
decent and refined in connection with the outlook or perception of the
general public towards the VH people. Even in most of the Hindi books
and
other literature like magazines and newspapers, you'll still find the
  word
Andha to spell out the visual disability rather than Drishtiheen. So
the
bottom-line is to see the kind of awareness that people have, it is
true
that it would make hardly any significant difference what term is being
  use,
over the course of times refinements in any language are essential.

It is just easier to write blind than visually challenged. And between
us, there is no need to use niceties, is there? Also, no matter what
alternatives we use, there is no doubt we are blind. Just my two cents
  worth!

  Dear members,
I hope many of you on the list agree with me that it is better that we
atleast do not or stop using the word Blind and start using visually
challenged in our conversation. I feel the phrase is more polite and
doesnot hurt the feelings who are visually challenged.
let us try to use it in our communication.
