[AI] Mix and Match My article published in today's Hindu Business Line

2016-01-13 Thread REKHA REVATHY
Dear All
Hope all are doing good. Below I am pasteing my article published in
today's Hindu Business Line. Hope all will like it.
Mix and match
Rekha Revathy
On inclusive education for the differently-able
The concept of inclusion is considered important in all fields
nowadays. Inclusive education for differently-abled children is one
such attempt to include children with various kinds of disabilities in
normal schools
The idea is that through inclusive education, differently-abled
children will get an opportunity to mingle with normal children from
an early age. It will help increase their confidence level, improving
their competency, and they will be able to boldly express their talent
before others. This will ultimately lead to bringing the
differently-abled into the mainstream at at early age
That said, there are many challenges in the effective implementation
of this programme. I was a blind learner in a normal school in Kerala.
I was fully unaware of my community in my childhood
As a blind person, I was not able to learn Braille. In many
situations, I ended up having to identify my issues and discuss them
with my parents and teachers.
In my case I was lucky enough to have cooperative and helpful teachers
when I was in elementary school. And I was also lucky enough to have a
little vision during that time. But not everyone is that fortunate
Here, the issue is that children may not be able to rightly
communicate their problems. And in many cases they will be hesitant to
express their problems.
A differently-abled child in a normal school requires special
attention on many fronts. Of course, many such issues can be avoided
by putting a differently-abled child in a special school. For example,
a blind child can learn Braille only in a special school
But that’s not possible for all such children. So there is a need to
find ways to provide for the special needs of differently-abled
children in a normal school itself, otherwise inclusive education
cannot be effective.
The teachers also need to be sensitised as well as trained to handle
mixed classes, which include the differently-abled.
For instance, even though I used to sit in the front row, especially
in mathematics classes, I usually ended up with lots of confusion and
doubt. When I reached the 8th standard, I started recording my classes
and learned by listening to themrepeatedly.
But teachers do not always say all the things they write on the
blackboard. And when I approached them with my doubts, they were also
confused about how they could help me.
There is a need for well-trained teachers, who can handle accessible
technology for differently-abled children and help them in tackling
their specific problems. Special coaching classes for
differently-abled children in accessible techniques should be given.
Special counselling should be given to parents of such children and to
teachers as well
It is important to think about providing all the facilities needed for
a differently-abled child in a normal school before sending them to
normal schools, rather than special schools. In my opinion — shared by
many differently-abled people — it is better to teach a
differently-abled child in a special school until 7th standard or so,
and then put them in an integrated system. If we could provide special
attention and facilities in a normal school itself, we can also make
them learn along with other children.
It is necessary to improve the infrastructure and quality of learning
and teaching in special schools because these changes can be
incorporated in regular schools gradually.

Re: [AI] regarding typing test for rrb examinations

2015-11-21 Thread REKHA REVATHY
Hi Sir
In my knowledge screen reader support is not given in typing tests.
and tests will be taken in computer.
I have attended 1 typing test of SSC.
A scribe facility is given that is so far in the case of SSC typing
test that I attended I was provided with a reader arranged by SSC
itself.
They will read the content which we have to type and additional time
is also given.
I don't know about magnification and brail availability.
this is what for the SSC tests.
Hope this helps

Re: [AI] Help me to take a right call

2015-10-03 Thread REKHA REVATHY
Vidya pointed out rightly.
if u could get materials then we can do Econometrics and Statistics.
I have done statistics in my UG and PG.
I have not faced that much issues in learning Statistics but in the
case of Econometrics I faced difficulty in the UG level and I was
forced to ignore it in my PG.
here the important thing is the availability of study material in
accessable formats.
but there may not be such issues in your case .
in the case of SPSS I myself find it difficult to use it.
it may be because of my lack of practical experience in using it.

 Dear Friends,

Sharing with the list, information regard to recent special training
program that was conducted by the Union Bank of India for its visually
impaired staff members at the staff training center, Gurgaon.

It was a 6 days well designed training plan by the bank. The training
program primarily focused on possible job roles and executing those
job roles by accessing various bank packages and Finacle with jaws.

I am indeed gratified to state here that I am part of this initiative
of the bank since September 2013 with my involvement with bank’s
training college presentation on “ensuring inclusive classroom
training for pwd”. Our bank has implemented and leveraged many of
the accessibility provisions in the last 1 year e.g. daisy reading
material for trainees, publishing HTML and accessible pdf manual on
 using jaws with finacle.

With Regard to this special training program, I along with Prashant
Naik was involved in conceptualizing, designing program, preparing
manuals, pre training arrangements, etc. bank published reading
material with newer edition of Finacle with jaws manual and other
manuals on HRMS, email client with jaws, etc. prepared by Jerin Jose
 and Yogesh Taneja.
Overall this pilot training is a great success as bank management got
good pragmatic understanding on needs and possibilities for persons
with visual impairment. Many further plans have been declared by bank
on such training and accessibility improvements.

We are ready to embark on this journey of empowering visually impaired
bank employees, and after completion of this training program we are
very confident that there are endless possibilities for visually
 impaired friends in banking sector.

 With Best Regards

Re: [AI] 2 Better Than 1? Being A Scribe For A Visually Impaired- Akanksha Mittal.

2015-03-17 Thread REKHA REVATHY
I think that Vidya pointed out very rightly about the constraints of
making computer learning and usage compelssery very soon.
It is very difficult to implement this kind of decissions
very fast.
But it doesn't mean that govt can not do anything in this regards.
Quality of education in many blind schools is a matter of concern.
As Vidya pointed out there can be exceptions in the case.
There may good blind schools in developed and developing arreas.
But when it comes to rural areas it becomes a question mark.
Govt have to find some kind of solutions to improve the basic
accessability of schools and quality of education in schools of all
kind.
Here there can be exceptions.
But there are many cases in which schools are providing very better
education to all category of people.
But accessable computer education to blind students is again a matter
of concern.
On 3/18/15, Vidhya Y vidhya@gmail.com wrote:
we talk about accessibility, taking exams on computer, android
 accessibility, integrated education etc
 what about Indian Villages?
in Villages, parents don't even educate their blind children.
even if they do, its going to be in a blind school because they stay
 far away from cities
and definitely integrated education is not the solution because
when there are no proper schools for sighted dchildren itself,
 what about schools educating blind?
and also parents leave them in hostels because travelling is not possible.
in this way many children complete their entire education.
so how can government make computer based exam compulsory?
I am taking my own example,
till 7th grade I had to stay in hostel because it was 70 Kilometers
 away from home.
and from home there is no way to join integrated school because in
 near buy schools,
no one learns computer till 8th grade and internet access is a big issue.
later in 8th grade I had to cope up with the normal class because in
 blind schools,
quality education is generally not met(exceptional schools might be there)
I had to learn algebric concepts which should have been thought in 4th
 grade.
then I finally managed to study math till BCA.
and later after getting introduced to computer from 11th grade,
I could study easily and now internet is also available.
only because of my cousin I got support to learn computer and since I
 developed interest in computer,
I continued in the same field and now I'll do msc.
I could do is because of extreme support of my parents, brother and tutors.
but it is not the case for many children.
I remember in my town, there is a blind lady who has not studied and
never come out of her room.
another blind child doesn't know how to walk till she is 12 years.
 still there are many villages!.
in this group say there are 5000 people all over india,
what about the rest of the blind people?
say another 5000 know computer and have internet access but not in the
 group.
 what about the rest?
statistics says there are millions of blind people.
I think we feel that every one are so fortunate as the members in the
 group.
but government cannot make such computer based exam compulsory.
and we cannot say its left to blind people to cope up with all
 upcoming technology!

Dependence upon scribes and misuse of scribes is indeed a real problem.
At NAB Delhi we have started a project titled technology aided
 education

 of
the blind to make students independent in reading and writing thereby
 eliminating the dependence upon scribes.
Under this project, our students of class 6 and above will get personal
laptops and students of class 3 to 5 will get computer training.
The target is to make sure all blind studetns of classe 6 and above are
 able
to read the computer to read books and write their exams.
I hope in the years to come, our students will write their exams
 themselves.

Oh my gosh, mathematics and mentally? I couldn't even think. Hahahaha. I
 use
tailer frame and computer (ms excel) for matjematical purpose. And if you
have the knowledge of kartisian theory, you can use svg draw to draw the
diagram, and by using the V o I c! software to read the diagram. Note. In
order to read the diagram as sighted one using VOIC, you must learn its
beheavour or different sound scapes produce by this software. I mean, you
must learn how to sea with your ears!

atleast Math you can do mentally and with the use of tailorframe(I
managed to do trignometry and calculus that way) but as of now, I
don't think there are practical solutions for Physics and chemistry
practicals and also for engineering drawing.
