   Can’t bar visually impaired from principal post, Delhi HC to
   Kendriya Vidyalayas.

The court said that an advertisement issued by the Kendriya Vidyalaya 
Sangathan in August 2018 for the posts of principal distinguished 
persons with disabilities and had the effect of excluding them from the 
race of recruitment.


The Delhi high court on Monday termed as unsustainable a recruitment 
advertisement issued by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan that excluded 
reservation for blind persons from the post of principal.


The court observed that every act of exclusion that has the effect of 
compelling a person with disabilities (PwDs) out of a race for gaining 
employment without their fault is an assault on their dignity.


A bench of chief justice Satish Chandra Sharma and justice Sanjeev 
Narula opined that the advertisement issued by the Sangathan in August 
2018 for the posts of principal, vice-principal, PGTs, TGTs, librarian 
distinguished PwDs and had the effect of excluding them from the race of 
recruitment as the distinction was purely on the basis of disability.

Eight thousand 277 Divyang people and senior citizens of 19 districts of 
Madhya Pradesh will get assistive devices worth Rs 9 crore 53 lakh 79 
thousand. This will make the life of the beneficiaries easier. These 
districts have been selected by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and 
Empowerment under ADIP (Scheme of Assistance to Disabled Persons for 
Purchase/Fitting of Aids and Appliances) and Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana.


Distribution of assistive devices to Divyang and senior citizens will be 
carried out in Ashoknagar, Tikamgarh, Shivpuri, Indore, Khandwa, Umaria, 
Katni, Narmadapuram, Guna, Niwadi, Neemuch, Dindori, Alirajpur, Vidisha, 
Mandla, Sidhi, Chhatarpur, Sheopur and Bhopal on September 17. Minister 
of Social Justice and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Shri Prem 
Singh Patel said that the Union Ministry of Social Justice and 
Empowerment will organise camps for persons with disabilities and senior 
citizens in 19 districts on September 17.


In these camps, assistive devices will be distributed by the Artificial 
Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALMICO) in the presence of 
public representatives. In the distribution camps to be held through 
Arjun portal, entry of assistive devices will be done on Sparsh portal. 
Their life will become easier after getting equipment.


Selected 19 districts

In Tikamgarh district, assistive devices worth Rs one crore 21 lakh 49 
thousand will be given to 1201 beneficiaries, in Ashoknagar devices of 
Rs 42 lakh 13 thousand to 391 beneficiaries, in Shivpuri one crore 24 
lakh 89 thousand to 716, in Indore 11 lakh 18 thousand to 318, in 
Khandwa 18 lakh 60 thousand to 374, in Umaria Rs 31 lakh 81 thousand to 
333, Rs 66 lakh 30 thousand to 609 in Katni, and assistive devices worth 
Rs 84 lakh 5 thousand will be distributed to 918 beneficiaries in 
Narmadapuram.


Assistive devices worth Rs 40 lakh will be given to 300 beneficiaries in 
Guna, 51 lakh 62 thousand to 332 in Niwadi, 36 lakh 11 thousand to 194 
in Neemuch, 33 lakh 13 thousand to 405 in Dindori, 45 lakh 50 thousand 
to 253 in Alirajpur, 41 lakh 80 thousand to 269 in Vidisha, 62 lakh 47 
thousand to 536 in Mandla, 51 lakh 19 thousand to 355 in Sidhi, 15 lakh 
46 thousand to 306 in Chhatarpur, 51 lakh 6 thousand to 217 in Sheopur 
and devices of worth Rs 25 lakh will be distributed to 250 beneficiaries 
in Bhopal.

*Visakhapatnam*: A visually challenged girl from the tribal tracts of 
ASR district was part of the Indian Women Cricket team that won the 
championship defeating Australia, in Birmingham, UK, on Saturday.


The girl, Ravani, hails from Rangasingipadu village of Hukumpeta mandal 
in ASR district. Born to Gopalakrishna and Chittemma, Ravani studied at 
the government blind school in Visakhapatnam and later joined the same 
school in Hyderabad for her Intermediate.


All the villagers were elated when they heard that the Indian team 
comprising Ravani and others won the cricket championship. ASR district 
collector Sumit Kumar visited the family and spoke to her parents.


Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the visually 
challenged Indian women’s cricket team on winning a gold medal at the 
IBSA World Games, saying the country beams with pride at their success.


Cricket for the Visually Challenged made its debut at the International 
Blind Sports Federation World Games in Birmingham this year. India 
restricted Australia for 114/8 in the allotted 20 overs and then chased 
down the revised target of 42 in 3.3 overs.

   Karnataka High Court notice to Centre on petition challenging
   exclusion of disabilities from National Family Health Survey

The petitioner has sought a direction to the Ministry of Health and 
Family Welfare to include the 21 disabilities mentioned in the schedule 
to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD), 2016 as a 
variable in the household survey


The High Court of Karnataka has ordered issue of notice to the Central 
government on a PIL petition questioning exclusion of disabilities as a 
variable in the ensuing National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-6.


A division bench comprising Chief Justice Prasanna B. Varale and Justice 
M.G.S. Kamal passed the order on the petition filed by Javed Abidi 
Foundation.


The petitioner has sought a direction to the Ministry of Health and 
Family Welfare to include the 21 disabilities mentioned in the schedule 
to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD), 2016 as a 
variable in the household questionnaire of the NFHS-6 while pointing out 
that disabilities was a variable in the NFHS-5


Reasons for exclusion

Quoting various media reports, it has been claimed in the petition that 
the disabilities were excluded from NFHS-6 on the advise of a Technical 
Advisory Committee citing two reasons - enumerators were not trained nor 
qualified to ask about and evaluate disability; and enumerating 
disability as a variable was a time-consuming and laborious process.


The reasons cited to exclude disabilities are unjustifiable in the light 
of Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons 
with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which states that it the right of persons 
with disabilities to be part of any data collection exercise and all 
data about disability should be disaggregated so that persons with 
disabilities can get the maximum advantage of any schemes and other 
programmes meant for their welfare. The exclusion also violative of the 
provisions of the RPwD Act, the petition has complained.


Disputing claim

The petitioner has also disputed the claim of the Ministry that the 
disabilities has been already enumerated during the 76^th  round of the 
National Sample Survey of 2018 and there would be no change in those 
figures.


The Ministry’s response to petitioner stating that the NFHS-5 contained 
questions questionnaire on disabilities on the advise of Department of 
Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, and the primary focus of NFHS 
is maternal and child health and other questions with a very shorter 
version of the question will not be advisable.

   Blind since six, Tamil Nadu man repairs mixies by touch

COIMBATORE: Sureshkumar, 32, picks up a mixie that a man  brought to his 
repair shop in Coimbatore, identifies the  problem and has it running 
again, all in 15 minutes. What's   the big deal? Suresh is completely blind.
He runs a service centre for mixer-grinders, washing 
machines,  refrigerators and LPG stoves all by himself on 
the  Kavundampalayam-TVS Nagar road. When TOI visited his shop 
on  Tuesday, Suresh was busy repairing two mixies. He deftly   took the 
appliances apart, identifying the wires and moving   parts by touch 
unfazed that the power was on. He listened to  the appliances running to 
diagnose the problem.
Suresh  said, "Initially people hesitated to give me their 
appliance  for repairs, but once they saw the quality of my work 
they  started to trust me. Now I service double-door 
refrigerators .. washing machines, mixer grinders, ceiling fans and gas 
stoves.
Suresh lost his vision after a bout of brain fever when he  was barely 
six years old. He attended a government school  for the visually 
impaired till Class V but dropped out  after that. "I lost hope 
initially. Then my elder sister  Revathy approached an electrical goods 
service   at Saravanampatti in Coimbatore city more  than a decade ago 
and requested them to allow me to learn  the trade," Suresh said. That 
was the turning point.


Krishnamurthy, the man who owned the service centre, was patient with 
Suresh. He would give the youth the different parts of mixer grinders, 
washing machines and refrigerators and explain what they were. Over time 
Suresh learned to tell them apart by touch. He also proved a dab hand at 
coil winding.
The first appliance Suresh repaired on his own was a mixer grinder. "A 
pushplate was damaged and I replaced it. I can't describe what I felt 
when the appliance ran smoothly.  It gave me a new confidence that I 
could live my life independently," he said. Six months ago, Suresh 
picked up the confidence to branch out on his own and opened ' Mari 
Electrical'.
A big local electrical  appliances store gives him a lot of gadgets to 
service and  repair. Suresh said he asks people to use  UPI to pay him 
as he cannot identify the value of  currency notes. He's planning to 
learn braille to overcome  this. He now aspires to set up an institute 
to train  visually challenged people.
"I can teach visually  impaired people to repair electrical goods so 
that they  don't have to travel on trains and buses begging for  alms," 
he said. Suresh said he makes enough to put food  on the table and pay 
the rent for his shop and the house  he shares with his mother K Maheswari.

   In a first, Odisha's Bhima Bhoi school for the blind got upgraded
   with Vocational and Higher Secondary School.

Initially, 24 visually-challenged students are enrolled in Plus II 
first-year in the school. Students from across the State can take 
admission and study +2 in Science, Arts and IT which will also have 
hostel facilities


A 50-bed hostel building for both boys and girls will also be 
constructed on its premises soon.


On September 1st, 1960, the Bhima Bhoi School for the Blind opened its 
doors in Bhubaneswar. Additionally, it is the first government 
institution under the Odisha department of school and mass education. 
The school's major goal is to integrate blind students into mainstream 
education.


The upgraded division of the school was inaugurated by Chief Minister 
Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday, July 4.  On this occasion, he also 
inaugurated an audio studio for visually impaired children. He 
distributed bedrolls and dinner plates to the children. Refrigerators 
and television sets have also been installed on the campuses.


One teacher is assigned to every 10 students at this school. The 
government-run school has been given access to practical smart 
classrooms, e-libraries, scientific labs, and a variety of sports 
facilities as part of the 5T high school transformation programme.



Vijayalakshmi Pal,Principal at Bhima Bhoi said, “It was the need of the 
hour, our students had to either discontinue their education or move out 
of the state. Providing hostel facilities is an added advantage for 
these children.”

   Madurai student selected to play for India in international cricket
   tourney for blind

MADURAI:  An alumnus of Thiagarajar Arts and Science College, S Maharaja 
has been selected to the Indian men’s cricket team, who will participate 
in the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) World Games in 
Birmingham 2023, which will be held from August 18 to 27.


S Maharaja, hails from Duraisamy Puram village in Ottapidaram taluk in 
Thoothukudi district. He had partial vision till he was in Class 3. 
After he lost his eyesight completely, he studied at the Anne Jane 
Askwith Higher Secondary School for the visually impaired in 
Palayamkottai, where he was encouraged to take part in blind cricket 
when he was in Class 4.
As his journey continued into the later years, he was selected into the 
Indian team and became the first person from Tamil Nadu to represent 
India under the ‘fully blind’ category of B1. Speaking to TNIE, S 
Maharaja said he started practicing cricket in his childhood and got 
selected into the Tamil Nadu team while he was studying in Class 11.
In Class 12, I secured 521/600 and joined BA English at the Thiagarajar 
Arts and Science College, where I was encouraged to pursue my sports 
career. For the past four years, I have represented Tamil Nadu and 
showcased my best performance, which even helped my team bring home the 
Nagesh trophy,” he said.
“I used to practice four hours regularly. College authorities encouraged 
visually impaired students by allowing them to torch the light at sports 
events, providing them with travelling allowances, and exempting them 
from classes for practice,” he said.


“I faced a lot of challenges in getting sponsorship in sports events. 
Though I have now been selected to represent World Games for Blind, I 
have to arrange the necessary kits, including food and other things on 
my own. People need to support visually impaired cricket players on par 
with normal cricket players,” he added. He requested Chief Minister MK 
Stalin and Minister for Sports Udhayanidhi Stalin to extend support to 
visually impaired cricket players and offer them government jobs as an 
encouragement, and to help them continue their sports career.


“Maharaja is an excellent left-arm bowler and he is an expert in batting 
too. He has brought laurels to our college at many national events, and 
won the ‘Man of the Match’ award in many games,” Thiagarajar College 
Physical Education Director R Selvakumar said.

Amity School student Saumya Chauhan hopes her object-detection device 
will help the visually challenged handle daily challenges more confidently


Innovation and entrepreneurship have nothing to do with age. Saumya 
Chauhan, 17, is a testament to that. The Class 12 student of Amity 
Global School in Gurugram has developed an intelligent vision-based 
object detection device for the visually/partially impaired to help them 
get through their daily lives with some ease.


The idea dawned upon Chauhan when, as a Class 8 student working with 
some NGOs, she happened to witness first-hand the problems faced by 
those with failing eyesight. It made her think hard how she could help 
them. A bit of research and Chauhan soon began work on her project, 
giving a final shape to the prototype early last year.


To be used like a headgear, the virtual reality goggles/glasses are made 
from biodegradable material. Being environment-conscious, Chauhan says 
she didn't want her innovation to harm the planet. "In future, after 
these devices are used to an optimum number, I will give the option of 
buy-back to recycle the e-waste," she says.


The algorithm used in object recognition is YOLOv4 (YOLO is a real-time 
object recognition system that can recognise multiple objects in a 
single frame; YOLOv4 is its fourth version) and TensorFlow Lite (a 
deep-learning framework). Her device has an accuracy of 67.23 per cent 
and an object detection time of 0.03785 seconds. Initially, she used an 
Arduino UNO board (a microcontroller board), later shifting to a 
Raspberry Pi board (single-board computers).


The visually impaired need to be aware of their surroundings and 
recognise objects to avoid challenges and mishaps. The YOLO object 
identification technique recognises the item in the real world. The 
single-board Raspberry Pi circuit makes it easier to install the camera 
sensor. The board is cut to the size of a little credit card and object 
detection is through a web application.


Chauhan, who spent about Rs 14,000 on her project, now plans to start 
testing the prototype. Ask about the experience of working on the device 
and getting recognition (a research paper has been filed on it in the

   Parliament library now accessible to visually challenged

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated special facilities that provide 
visually challenged people access to more than 1.7 million publications 
and resources in the library.


NEW DELHI: Visually challenged people will now have easier access to the 
vast repository of resources in the parliament library which is now 
equipped with necessary assistive technologies, officials said.


Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday inaugurated special facilities 
that provide visually challenged people access to more than 1.7 million 
publications and resources in the library. Birla took the initiative 
after he found that visually impaired people were facing difficulty in 
accessing the library for want of digital visual aids.


After consultations with institutes and domain experts, the Lok Sabha 
Secretariat procured necessary hardware and software to assist such 
people to access library resources, officials said.


Visually challenged people will be able to listen to the contents of the 
screen in Indian accented voices, read, translate, digitise, take audio 
output for any printed books, and listen to physical books, they said.


Persons with partial blindness who can operate computers will be able to 
magnify the contents of the screen through magnifiers, while those 
having hearing impairment can have access to screen contents through 
Braille devices, a senior official said.


He said the parliament library has also subscribed to Sugamaya 
Pustakalaya, India's largest online library of books with access to more 
than six lakh book titles. These books can now be accessed by fully 
visually challenged people using a daisy player.

to cook independently.


We are pleased to have Mrs. Veena Mehta Verma Ma'am leading the 
workshop. Mrs. Veena is a visually impaired person working as Manager, 
HR in a leading PSU. She is also a life coach and role model for Persons 
with Disabilities. She has also been one of the top 16 contestants at 
the Golden Eye Chef 2019 competition and is passionate about teaching 
cooking skills to individuals with disabilities.


 In this workshop, she will demonstrate how to prepare delicious meals 
without relying on sight. Participants will learn techniques such as 
measuring ingredients by touch, identifying different spices by smell, 
and using sound cues to know when food is ready.


 The workshop is open to all individuals (from all gender, age and 
background) with visual impairments and is free of charge. We encourage

   145 cases identified during assessment camp for differently-abled

*ITANAGAR, Apr 11:* The identification and assessment camp for 
distribution of aids and assistive devices to hearing, visual, 
intellectual and multiple disabilities, concluded at Donyi Polo Mission 
School for Hearing Impaired on Tuesday.


The camp began on April 9 last.

Altogether 145 cases with disabilities (hearing- 91, visually Impaired- 
25, intellectual- 29) have been diagnosed who are to be benefited with 
requisite aids and assistive devices  like digital hearing aids, smart  
cane, android tablet, universal baille kits and teaching learning 
materials in the up-coming camp Phase-II to be organised from July next.


The team of NIEPMD Chennai, headed by the camp coordinator Hari Mathi, 
NIEPMD consultant M Ramakrishnan, S K Warshong, orientation & mobility 
instructor-CRC-Shillong and  M Nongrum MTS (Consultant) CRC-Shillong  
along with the faculty of the school, visited the various institutions 
in the capital complex working for the intellectual impairment and 
multiple disabilities on Tuesday for identification &  assessment of the 
children  with special needs at their door steps as many of them could 
not turn up on the day of the camp.


School Principal H Sharma extended thanks and gratitude to the team of 
NIEPMD, Chennai & CRC-Shillong for their noble services in the larger 
interest of the differently-abled children of the state and appealed 
them to provide the assistive devices at the earliest.

   Delhi hospital launches smart vision glasses for visually impaired,

A private hospital here launched smart vision glasses that are based on 
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning technology, providing 
new hope to the visually impaired and blind.


The vision glasses are lightweight and feature a camera, a sensor, and 
come with AI/ML technology, making it even more effective in assisting 
users.


The glasses project images, provide walking assistance, and include face 
recognition capabilities, accompanied by a smart earpiece that reads and 
understands, and relays information to the wearer.


Additional features include voice assistance and GPS navigation, making 
them an essential tool for visually impaired patients to navigate and 
avoid obstacles.


The wearable device, launched on Wednesday by Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye 
Hospital, in association with Vision Aid India and Bengaluru-based 
startup SHG Technologies, creates a more interactive, interesting, and 
independent world for those with visual impairments.


“Technology has the power to revolutionise the lives of individuals with 
visual impairments, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this 
progress of eradicating blindness from the country,” said Umang Mathur, 
Executive Director and CEO of Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, in a 
statement.


“The smart vision glasses represent a significant step towards enhancing 
the quality of life for the visually impaired and blind patients. It is 
our firm belief that healthcare is a basic human right and should be 
accessible to all, regardless of their economic status or physical 
condition,” he added.


The smart vision glasses come at a time when the number of visually 
impaired and blind patients in India is on the rise.


According to the World Health Organization, there are currently an 
estimated 15 million blind people in India, and another 135 million 
people with some form of visual impairment.

   Entrepreneur-student makes ‘green’ pens, helps visually impaird eke
   out a living

KOLKATA: A polytechnic student who had lost two academic years to 
financial constraints during the pandemic is going  the green way to 
continue with his studies and, at the same  time, helping 
visually-impaired people make a living by selling eco-friendly ballpoint 
pens he makes at home. He is  also financing the studies of his sister 
who will sit for Madhyamik next year.


Subhajeet Saha (22) from Noapara, a diploma student of electronics and 
communications at Shree Ramkrishna Institute of Science and Technology, 
Baruipur, has garnered attention from social organisations and 
environment enthusiasts for the paper- pens filled with seeds of 
saplings he makes. He also launched paper pencils and bamboo 
toothbrushes under his brand — Rohit Ecofriendly.
Saha has teamed up with around 100 visually-impaired hawkers, including 
10 women, to sell these pens on trains, buses, and on the streets. 
 These hawkers belong to 35 NGOs that also help Saha sell his green 
products at various events.
“The process of making the pens is simple. It takes a few seconds to 
wrap a refill with art paper and put a seed at the rear. At least six or 
seven pens can be made from one art paper. I have engaged around 50 
women from NGOs to make the pens. My mother also helps out,” said Saha, 
who is now contemplating making fountain pens with bamboo, and looking 
 for a deal with nib manufacturers.

   An initiative to make reading inclusive

Pick A Book conducts a session with tactile books to help children with 
visual impairment in Visakhapatnam touch and feel the pages


Eight-year-old Pilla Mokshasree, a Class II student, squeals in delight 
as she traces her fingers to visualise one of the world’s most beautiful 
and iconic monuments. She had heard stories about the Taj Mahal from her 
class teacher and in her mind, had painted a picture of the monument. 
“This is grand and has so many contours!” says Mokshasree, a student of 
the Government Residential School for Visually Challenged Girls at 
Sagarnagar.


Her classmate Kommu Swethe has a smile on her face as she feels the 
shapes of the continents and countries with Braille labels. The girls 
recently got their first batch of tactile books from book club Pick A 
Book (PAB) which celebrated its third anniversary.


The book club, that has a presence in five countries, is celebrating its 
third anniversary on the theme Reading For All. The club was founded by 
KVT Ramesh and Ragulan Tharmakulasingam with an aim to encourage the 
habit of reading and in ths process, hone public-speaking, communication 
and presentation skills.We found that there was a dire need for support 
for individuals with visual impairment. The main gap was limited 
availability of resources,” says M Tanuja, head of operations, PAB 
Global. She collaborated with Delhi-based Saksham Trust to source a 
batch of tactile books on various topics and conducted an interactive 
session for the students of Government Residential School for Visually 
Challenged Girls.


The educational institution, which is Andhra Pradesh’s only residential 
school for visually challenged girl children, has about 60 students.


“Tactile books are a great way to foster development of literacy skills 
for a visually impaired child and also assists in developing concepts 
and honing sensory efficiency skills,” says Tanuja. According to her, 
one of the challenges most schools face is sourcing the books, that 
involves high production and shipping costs.


“Tactile books are very useful for beginners. Earlier, the books used to 
be handmade and involved long processes and could be not produced in 
bulk. With printed tactile books that started about six years ago, a 
variety of topics are available now,” says Rummi K Seth, co-founder of 
Saksham Trust. Saksham gets the tactile books from Raised Lines Foundation.


India has nearly five million visually impaired people as per the 2011 
census. “A typical Braille textbook consists of only text made 
accessible using Braille without diagrams and pictures. The issue is 
that a few visually impaired children are able to pursue subjects like 
Science, Maths in higher studies. Tactile books and graphics make a 
significant difference in improving quality of education,” says 
principal M Maheshwara Reddy.

The Blind Graduates Forum Of India (BGFI) is delighted to invite you to 
our annual event, The Readers and Writers Day. This event is an 
opportunity for us to acknowledge and express our gratitude to our 
readers and writers, who selflessly open up the printed world to us. We 
also take this opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our young 
blind graduates.


After a two-year gap due to the pandemic, we are thrilled to announce 
that The Readers and Writers Day is back, and it will take place on 
Sunday, Mar 19th, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, at The Muncherjee Nowrojee 
Banajee Industrial Home for the Blind, Chateau Dieu 280, Swami 
Vivekananda Rd, Jogeshwari West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400102.


This year, we have two incredible speakers who are sure to peak your 
interest. First, we are pleased to introduce Raghavendra Satish Peri. 
He’s a digital Transformation specialist, working with small & large 
enterprises in the areas of digital accessibility & digital marketing. 
He authors an Accessibility Blog at DigitalA11Y.com & is galvanizing the 
adoption of accessibility by inspiring the local tech community with 
meetups and mentorship. When away from his computer, Raghava can be 
found at local cafés & restaurants, listening to audiobooks, or writing 
on his Personal Blog.


Next, we have Muskan Gupta, a graduate in electrical engineering from 
National Institute of Technology, Nagpur. She currently works with Citi 
India as a technology analyst. She has also recently got enrolled in the 
MBA program of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad with 99.5 
percentile. She developed visual impairment during her 12th standard and 
will be sharing her experiences of actively learning and unlearning 
things on the go.


Registration Eligibility: Students graduated in 2022 from any bachelors’ 
course, only 1 reader and writer per student and the student should have 
cleared all the examinations of the course.

   The National Association for the Blind, O2 health studio and Madras
   Motor Sports Club are hosting the 32nd car rally – Braille on Wheels
   – for the visually challenged in Chennai.

The event will be held on Feb. 26 from 9 am onwards from Savera Hotel, 
146, Dr. Radhakrishnan Road.


The car rally brings together the visually impaired and the people with 
eyesight. The navigator and the driver are mutually dependent during the 
drive. The navigator has to read out the instructions which are in 
Braille for the driver to follow the rally route.Each team member 
contributes to a smooth ride, as per their physical ability.


With the navigator and the driver having a common goal, their 
interaction for over two days during the ‘dummy rally’ and the actual 
event gives rise to a camaraderie which often develops into a strong 
friendship, as per the organisers.


The event aims to make the visually impaired feel wanted.

“We look forward to greater support and encouragement to build upon our 
activities by getting more volunteers as well as increased participation 
of the beneficiaries and the community in general,” said Nina Reddy, 
president, National Association for the Blind, Tamil Nadu state branch.
