Shikhar On 3/13/10, KARAN GUPTA kara...@gmail.com wrote: Hi As this question has already been discussed actually - to answer it in a best possible way would be...one need to have IPhone OS 3.0 or higher installed on any of the three models of IPhone to make it compatible with its accessibility functionalities like voice-over, magnification, invert-colors, shake-dial, pinch-out, one-word ebook display and TTS etc. It comes with apple's proprietary screen reader though somewhat like iMac or macbook pro. I had already ran a live pilot survey on my totally VI friends at AFB (US), RNIB (UK) and some other major cities of the first world countries. Almost all of them had a very similar and straight-forward answer that the phone is undoubtedly a smartphone leader but they just can not afford to loose their already maintained speed and accuracy with any of the other phones out there that provide them haptic as well as tactile feedback. As the IPhone has 3.5 mm diagonal touchscreen TFT display. On the other hand, it is very much accessible indeed. You may give me a shout anytime, in case you pop around to Delhi and have an essence of how does an IPhone 3GS feels and works with its all accessibility features for a real-world use on its very latest 3.1.3 OS. All these accessibility features are simply outstanding except its screen reading proprietary software, which sounds a bit gimmicky to me unless we see some revolutionary developments ahead in navigating the apps which takes advantage of its one of the kind capacitive touchscreen with the combination of its next-gen screen reading software (hopefully out in 3rd Q 2010) unlike other touchscreen phones using resistive technology (stylus-thingy), which eventually doubles the problem for VI like the one I found in Samsung windows phone. The final verdict; its easy, its accessible but very time-consuming, sluggish and may not accurate. Press RIGHT navigation key till you land on the Advanced tabsheet. 3. Press DOWN navigation key to go to the option named Cursor Mode. By default, this is set to Original. 4. Press the SELECT key to open the list of available options. 5. Select one out of Original, Words and Letters using UP/DOWN navigation keys and press SELECT to confirm your selection. I find the Words option most comfortable here as it lets me read messages by lines using UP/DOWN navigation keys and by words using LEFT/RIGHT navigation keys. The above setting would resolve the issue with help pages too. Also note that when you set the Cursor Mode to any value other than Original, you cannot switch between open messages using LEFT/RIGHT navigation keys. This is the RSS Feeds page for The Hindu: http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/rss/index.htm. 2.There are a bunch of feeds on this page corresponding to different sections of the newspaper. If you wish to subscribe to all, you would have to manually subscribe to each one of them. So, to start, press enter on the first one, which is the News Update. 3.To add the feed of News Updates as a Live Bookmark, select Live Bookmarks from Subscribe to this feed combo box. Then, press the Subscribe Now button. 4.Make your selections in the Live Bookmarks dialog box, which is similar to the regular Bookmarks dialog. 5.Now to view the feed items, go to the location you selected in the previous dialog box, the default one is under the Bookmarks Toolbar. It would be the last item in the sub menu opened by pressing the Right arrow, and if you haven’t changed the named it will be labeled as “The Hindu – News Updates”. 6.You can Right arrow again to open this sub menu and press enter on each feed headline to reach the page with the news content. 7.A better way is to use the Open All in Tabs option that is always located at the bottom of every Bookmarks sub menu. All your feed items will be opened as tabs in the same window. You can read each page and then press CTRL+W to close the tab and automatically go to the next one. VoiceOver in Mac OS X Snow Leopard offers a breakthrough new capability: You can control your computer using gestures on a Multi- Touch trackpad even if you can't see the screen. The trackpad surface on your Mac notebook represents the active window on your computer, so you can touch to hear the item under your finger, drag to hear items continuously as you move your finger, and flick with one finger to move to the next or previous item. You'll hear how items are arranged on the screen, and you can jump directly to an item just by touching the corresponding location on the trackpad. For example, you can drag your finger around the trackpad to learn how items are arranged in a web page, a spreadsheet, a presentation, or any document with text. The more you touch, the more information you gather. More braille support, greater collaboration. The Mac is the only computer that supports braille displays right out of the box. Snow Leopard broadens this built-in support by including the latest drivers for over 40 models, including wireless Bluetooth displays. Just connect one and start using it — no additional software installation necessary. Snow Leopard also introduces a new feature, called braille mirroring, that enables multiple USB braille displays to be connected to one computer simultaneously. It’s perfect for classroom settings, where teachers can lead all of their students through the same lesson at the same time, even if the students are using different display models. World-class web browsing. VoiceOver in Snow Leopard offers new capabilities that make web browsing easier, faster, and more enjoyable. VoiceOver has been updated to take full advantage of powerful multicore processors, so it can scan and analyze large, complex web pages quickly and allow you to enter commands right away. VoiceOver will begin reading an entire web page automatically after it loads, and you can use key commands or gestures to control VoiceOver as it’s talking. To help you more quickly size up web pages you haven't visited before, VoiceOver can provide a customizable web page summary, including the title, number of tables, headers, links, form elements, and more. Snow Leopard fully supports HTML web tables without the need for a forms or table mode. You navigate tables using the same commands you already know. You can hear the contents of a table, including the column title and column and row number, by dragging your finger across the trackpad or using simple keystrokes. The rotor. Instead of forcing you to memorize keyboard shortcuts to navigate around the screen, VoiceOver offers a unique virtual control called a rotor. When you turn it — by rotating two fingers on the trackpad as if you were turning a dial — VoiceOver moves through text based on a setting you choose. For example, after setting the rotor to “Word” or “Character,” each time you flick, VoiceOver moves through the text one word at a time or one character at a time — perfect when

A walking stick has been designed to enable the handicapped walk with a lot more confidence. Crossing roads, climbing stairs and moving about in general will be much easier with this stick in their hand. The most encouraging aspect of the indigenous creation is going to be its cost, a meager Rs 50 or so. While, an imported one anywhere costs between Rs 1500 to 2000. The stick is battery-run and made of metal. It is equipped with an electronic device, witch indicates obstructions, if any, in the user’s path. Three B-tech students [electrical and electronic department]Amit Kumar, Rajesh Jaiswal and Saurabh Ranjan, who have designed the Stick, said the electronic device gave a warning signal from a distance of about 30 cm and the range could be increased further as per requirements. Dr. Amit Ray, the project guide, said the Stick gave out a beep to indicate an object stone or a vehicle and helped the blind manoeuvre his way. Explaining the mechanism,Dr. Ray said, “Our students have designed a circuit witch has a sensor that sends a warning beep in case something comes in the way”. Dr. Ray also said that the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India [ALIMCO] authorities had asked IIT technologists to design this kind of walking stick for the blind about two years ago. But they could not come out with this earlier as as the technocrats were exploring other possible applications of the stick, for example, its use in darkness and to measure the depth of potholes.IIT had earlier designed toys for spastic children. On Wednesday, the Madras high court passed an order, restoring the one hour extra time for the blind as granted in a 1993 government order that was annulled by a communiqu? issued by the department of government examinations (GE) on March 3, 2009.The first bench comprising chief justice Hemant Laxman Gokhale and justice FM Ibrahim Kalifulla passed this order based on a public interest writ petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Handicapped Federation Charitable Trust (TNHFCT) in response to an announcement made by the GE on March 13, 2009.The bench said, As per provisions laid out in GO no. 270 issued in 1993, one hour extra time should be granted to all visually impaired students irrespective of whether they availed this exemption in previous years. This is applicable to both those who are writing the exam with the help of a scribe or in the Braille format. The bench then directed the director of GE to communicate the order to all district educational officers with immediate effect. The high court order has put to rest a controversy that has raged for close to three weeks. On March 9, 2009, The Times Of India had informed its readers about a communiqu? issued by the GE which annulled provisions of a 1993 government order issued by the department of social welfare that granted extra time to all physically handicapped students, including the visually impaired, appearing for board examinations.Faced with protests from various pressure groups, the GE finally annulled its own communiqu? and announced on March 13 that centres that had been granting extra time hitherto could continue to do so. The department, however, made no new orders for those institutions seeking to implement it, citing any announcement as inappropriate during election time.Following this, TNHFCT filed a petition, stating that it was unfair to restore the benefit to select institutions. Counsel RR Prabhakaran and P Gurusamy appearing for TNHFCT argued that it violated article 14 (equality before law) of the constitution.Reacting to the order issued by the bench, TMN Deepak, vice president, TNHFCT, said, The judiciary has stood by people with disabilities. People suffering from disorders and disabilities have their own difficulty in writing. Provisions of the 1993 government order should be implemented in its full spirit and holistically. A committee should also be formed to make sure that these guidelines are being followed. lakshmy.ramanat...@timesgroup.com On 6/4/09, shikher goyal shikag...@gmail.com wrote: hello to all as subject line shows, i want to know what will i've to do to get extra 20 minutes with one hour in any entrance/regular exams. with regards Shikher goyal skype: shikago09 To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Warm regards Ankit Jindal -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Renuka Warrier Sent: Sunday, May 31, 2009 9:06 AM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] Google Chrome in Indian languages Date:31/05/2009 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/2009/05/31/stories/2009053154941000.htm Front Page Google Chrome in Indian languages T. Ramachandran It is possible to switch from one language to another KOCHI: Google Chrome is now being offered in many Indian languages, with version 2 of the browser made available for download. The stable version 2 comes in Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya (on Windows Vista alone), Tamil, and Telugu. A Hindi version was available earlier. What this means is that PC users who have Windows Vista as their operating system should be able to easily select the browser's interface language by using the language-setting options. It should also be possible to switch from one language to another by changing the language option and re-launching the browser. The users can then see the browser menus and other associated content in one of the Indian languages (or any of the other available language options). Recent phenomenon With Windows XP, the Indian language options are fewer, and font rendering might be an issue, if the user's system is not primed for it. Asked about this, a Google spokesperson said: Creation and consumption of Indian language content on the web is a relatively recent phenomenon. In some cases, the fonts get installed by default, and if not, Google tries to provide installation or downloading option through all our products. Chrome was launched only in September 2008, but it has garnered a small share of the browser market. In December last, a Google blog post claimed that in just 100 days, the initial (beta) version had built up a base of over 10 million active users worldwide. Apart from its availability in several languages, speed was one feature on which there has been increased focus in the new version. Improvements had been made to get the browser to load up and render pages faster, Google claimed. Stability is also another improvement being highlighted, with the fixing of over 300 bugs that caused crashes since launch. In the new release, Google also referred to the form autofill option, which enabled users to fill up form fields without having to input the same information in each instance. However, this browser is not packed with as many features as some of the others are. And it might not fit your bill, if you are a heavy user of the kind of add-ons that are possible with Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer. A modern platform This has a lot to do with how Google has conceived the browser. It was not just a browser but also a modern platform for web pages and applications. The browser is based on open source software. It has been developed with Webkit, an open source browser engine, which was originally deployed for the Safari browser. The rendering of Javascript, a scripting language widely used in the Web environment, was also speeded up, Google said. As for the release of the stable version 2 of the browser, Google itself said it did not give much weightage to version numbers, and these were mainly a metric to help us keep track of changes internally. For those already using older versions, the update ought to happen automatically. To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. They do carry a lot of christian fiction, but they also carry sci fi, fantasy, mysteries, and non fiction on cd, tape, mp3 cd and download. I've read a bunch of their stuff and they're a pretty good publisher. If you want the books in motion downloads though, head over to http://www.kitabe.com and sign up there. Kitabe has all the books in motion downloads for $10 each instead of $15 or so direct from books in motion. Not sure how they work that out, but I know it's on the level. Kitabe is a reputable site that got it's start as an mp3 cd rental plan. The about us link mentions that they provide a platform for new authors, but I noticed some established Christian authors in their line up. Here's the link: www.booksinmotion.com Also, to listen to audio clips, look for a graphic labeled speaker. I didn't see any flash content on the page I had been directed toward, so I'll assume the site is flash free for now. thanks, mukesh jain. Hi all, Just wondering whether mini notebooks , what is popularly known as netbooks are available in India. I have not heard anyone mentioning it on the list. I just bought a couple of them last week and they are really great! They come preloaded with Windows XP home and the keyboard is almost like laptop. The display is smaller in size. For example, I bought them with 8.9 inch and that's reasonable enough even for a sighted person to use the system. The only disadvantage is that they do not come with CD/DVD drives and henceforth one has to get external ones. But in comparison to their advantages, I do not mind having my netbook without CD drive. For example, Netbooks are the only available PC models with Windows XP. Second, They are much lighter to carry and under 3 LBS. I would say about 2 KG. The solid space drives are lighter than hard drive and I actually whent for that. And of course, they are under $300 and many standard brands on the PC world carry their netbooks. Regards, Vetri. Your mobile phone can actually be a Life Saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it: FIRST Emergency The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of Your mobile; network and there is an emergency, Dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing Network to establish the emergency number for you, And interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out. SECOND Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your Keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, Call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock.Saves someone from having to Drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a mobile phone!' THIRD Hidden Battery Power Imagine your mobile battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the Instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next time. FOURTH How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone? To check your Mobile phone's serial number, Key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset So even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, But at least you know that whoever stole it Can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be No point in people stealing mobile phones. FIFTH ATM - PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know. If you should ever be forced by a robber to Withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can : Notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse. For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is Backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, But unknown to the robber, the police will be Immediately dispatched to the location. This information was recently broadcast on CTV by Crime Stoppers, however it is seldom used because people just don't know about it With regards Jalaja . My job requires me to use excel extensively to generate various kinds of reports. Although I know some basic functions of excel, I tend to struggle while using a little advanced functions of excel. I have referred several excel tutorials and documentation but I am that kind of a person who may require some coaching rather than reading. Some of the concepts I am looking forward to is the functions and formula, vlokup Hlookup, charts and tables, validations, filtering; advanced and custom filter and some basic macros. I request the list to advise me on the options for coaching on excel either online or in person in this regard. Many of my sited friends and colleagues have tried their bid to teach me but have had little success. I'm looking for a resource who teaches me from a jaws user's perspective. I would like 1 of our friends from the list to volunteer to teach me. Just FYI you may also suggest persons and institutions who may charge a reasonable fee for the coaching service. Hoping to hear from you soon. Request the members to send in your responses to my personal id (fayazjpa...@gmail.com) as I don't check this mail ID to often.
