Its nothing new that we are invited in the events and gatherings
either to sing or to sit in a corner as mere audience. I stop
attending at least disability related events where the ownership of
the occasion doesn't belong to us. Of course I, being a visually
impaired, don't mind to be an audience in a literary, religious,
academic or any sort of gathering where disability is not a theme.

A Group of Blind boys and girls performed a Musical Concert and a Skit or
Glaucoma awareness at the Haryana Raj Bhawan on Sunday. The programme was
organised by the Glaucoma support group of post Graduate institute of Medical
research (PGI) Chandigarh, Presided over By the Haryana Governor, Director PGI,
Chief of the Glaucoma support group and a team of Doctors - Eye specialists of
PGI. The Chief Secretary of the Govt. Of Haryana also graced the occasion.Over
200 persons enjoyed the musical evening and the sumptuous tea at the expense of
Haryana Govt. The participants, represented a cross section of citizens,
associated with PGI Glaucoma Support group, the Doctors and those connected
with the blind,The governor granted rupees 2 lacks to the Glaucoma Support
group and rupees 1000 each to the blind performers besides Souvenirs were given
to them by the glaucoma support group. While about 200 hundred citizens were
made aware about the silent on-set of glaucoma and the need to be vigilant
in the confines of the Raj Bhawan; a larger audience would have been possible
at the Tagore Theatre or the PGI Auditorium. While the blind girls and boys
performed gleefully, enthralled by the opportunity to perform before a VIP
gathering their introduction and names were strikingly missing through the
program. Probably the Blind are destined to be identified as Blind only and are
not expected to be recognised as human beings with a name, esteem or identity.
But it is a fashion statement these days to harp on the empowerment, esteem and
dignity for the Blind and the disabled. However I wish to introduce all of them.
They were: Sanjeev Gandhi (Working with Electricity Department), Rohit
Chauhan (Student), Shiv Kumar Sharma (Working with State Legal Services
Authority), Amrinder Singh (P.O. with Punjab and Sindh Bank), Kuljit (Working
with PNB), Meeta Gupta(Braille instructor with VTC),Roma Negi,Sabina, Sandeep
kaur, Sony Gupta, Princy, Panna Lal, Davinder, Jatinder and Badri Pra
sad all students. The Music creators were also Blind Sarbjeet
