[AI] Music

2024-01-05 Thread Ashutosh Singhal
Only sharing:
Hello, I am Suman Bhokray, a blind businessman and music composer. I have
noticed the increasing cost of musical instruments and the decreasing
financial support for people with disabilities, especially aspiring blind
musicians.
To address this, I am collaborating with some friends on a project. Our
goal is to identify deserving applicants and sponsor them with musical
instruments or gear such as MIDI keyboards with Reaper license or acoustic
instruments along with Reaper license and a Microphone.
This support will assist aspiring disabled artists globally in pursuing
their musical aspirations.
I value your insights and suggestions to enhance this project and make it
more beneficial. Your inputs can contribute significantly to our
initiative. Please share your thoughts and recommendations by replying to
me before 31/03/2024. Your contribution is highly appreciated, and I am
looking forward to your valuable feedback.
Thank you for your time and support. You can reach me on WhatsApp at

wishes,
Suman Bhokray

[AI] Music and its impact

2020-10-22 Thread john clayton
The last few months in this year have been difficult, and I have been
finding myself turning to music more and more to help deal with my
emotions, and looking for other ways that might be of help.

Music has always been one of the things that has been able to affect my
emotions deeply, be it making me feel happy when I am down, or just
something to relate to, at times when I feel alone. Listening to songs with
people who enjoy the same kind of music is even better (concerts etc.), but
that's obviously not possible right now.

I am sure we all are looking for things to make ourselves feel better,
especially in the times in which we find ourselves.

 So lets talk about this,

What impact has music had on you, from nothing at all, to major difference
in the way you feel?

It can be anything from playing an instrument to listening to different
types of songs, and of course, nothing builds friendships I have found as
some good music you can groove to along with a few others. :D

I thought of starting this topic to understand what works for you guys in
difficult situations and what does not, and or give ideas to others to
things they could try.

So, what do you guys tend to use as a stress buster? Is music something
that works for you same as it does for me? Or is there something else you
find works better.

Regards,

[AI] Music, youtube and tech experts

2013-06-25 Thread Ekinath Khedekar
Dear experts with music and technologies,

I like allot a Thai song sung by Taktan Chonlada given here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgKL8gBl26s

After a lot of search I got hold of this ong on youtube. I converted
it to mp3 through
http://www.youtube-mp3.org

But the problem I am unable to play it on my music system properly. It
plays like a Karaoke track without the voice of the singer. However, I
can hear her voice in one earphone when I listen to it on my phone
using earphones.

How do I deal witth it?
Pl. Guide
Is it true for all youtube tracks. Should I convert it in a different way?

Re: [AI] Music and the Mind

2011-03-22 Thread payal
Much of it is indeed true. Playing music by ear has been a talent almost
forever which has probably not been regaled because it was the most natural
thing to do. We have very often seen and heard the wandering hawkers selling
their wares to the tunes of popular hindi songs on the little string
instruments or the flute which I am certain they have had no formal training
to play.

Similarly, the nuances of music, either instrumental or vocal can indeed be
picked up as efficiently without the option of reading shee music.

I have personally observed it when I learned playing the sitar. The two
things that my teacher did with me was that he first verbally gave me the
notation or the basic raga and then went on to play it on his sitar which I
followed and replicated. Once the basic was known and established, the other
nuances were then picked up entirely by ear to complete the picture. It was
indeed a very interesting experience as I was a first time learner with a
recent enough vision loss and a partial hearing impairment as well. And, to
add, I had never learned music formally before but for the off key
bathroom singing. The teacher found it rather intriguing how easy it was for
me to relegate the notations to memory, when the sighted students had to be
forced not to look at their notations and then play.

It definitely says something for making the best of what you have. taking
entirely for granted the irreplaceable sight, thus rendering yourself
completely dependent on using sight for everything you do.

Music and the Mind

by MAURIE HILL on MARCH 21, 2011

The music has got to be into ya, so a salt-of-the-earth Vermont
fiddler explained to me recently, pointing to his heart.
Unfortunately, I didn't have
this wisdom at the age of 10 when I started taking flute lessons.
Because my vision was still 20/20, I could see the flute fingering
chart and learned
to read the sheet music. I practiced Claire de la Lune and
Elephant March so much that I'm sure I wasn't even looking at the
written music any more.
But reading music seemed essential to playing the unfamiliar,
unpracticed music of the fifth grade school band. I struggled to keep
up because dying photoreceptor
cells were starting to affect my ability to quickly scan across the
musical notation. Then again, maybe it was just because the band
music was boring
and hard to remember.

Out of frustration or loss of interest, I dropped the lessons and the
band. Later, as an adult, I picked up the flute again, but didn't do
so seriously
until I was introduced to the work of
Turlough O'Carolan,
a blind harpist and Irish composer from the 1600s. His simple yet
interesting tunes struck a chord with me. With practice, I learned to
play them effortlessly,
without having to read sheet music. While playing Scottish and Irish
tunes with my classically-trained friends, they would marvel at my
ability to play
by ear. They wondered how I could memorize all those tunes, but I
never really thought of it as memorization - that sounded too rigid
and difficult.
In an attempt to understand how the brain learns music, I read
This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession
 by Daniel J. Levitin.

As I suspected, I'm not a musical prodigy. According to his book, we
can thank our ancestors for the brain's evolved ability to map exact
pitch values
of music that we hear, recall its tempo, store musical patterns in a
hierarchal structure, create musical expectations, and have an
emotional reaction
to it. With musical expectations, we predict where a piece of music
might go, but occasional violations of those expectations make a
musical piece more
intriguing and enjoyable. And music that invokes emotion in us or
that we particularly like gets specially tagged in our brain.
Therefore, it's almost
second nature for us to recall and play music that we appreciate.
Levitin believes that we have an innate capacity to learn any of the
world's music.

Of course, there is no shortcut to playing an instrument well
-practice makes perfect. I was pleased to discover that those fifth
grade lessons were not
a waste of time. Levitin believes that even a small exposure to music
lessons as a child creates neural circuitry making us

As I suspected, I’m not a musical prodigy. According to his book, we
can thank our ancestors for the brain’s evolved ability to map exact
pitch values
of music that we hear, recall its tempo, store musical patterns in a
hierarchal structure, create musical expectations, and have an
emotional reaction
to it. With musical expectations, we predict where a piece of music
might go, but occasional violations of those expectations make a
musical piece more
intriguing and enjoyable. And music that invokes emotion in us or
that we particularly like gets specially “tagged” in our brain.
Therefore, it’s almost
second nature for us to recall and play music that we appreciate.
Levitin believes that we have an “innate capacity to learn any of the
world’s music.”

Of course, there is no shortcut to playing an instrument well
–practice makes perfect. I was pleased to discover that those fifth
grade lessons were not
a waste of time. Levitin believes that even a small exposure to music
lessons as a child creates neural circuitry making us a better, more
discerning
listener of music structure and form. If I can whistle a tune and
find the first note on my penny whistle or old wooden flute, I can
eventually figure
out the rest. But there are other methods for learning music when you
are blind or visually impaired.
The old Vermonter was right – music has got to be “into ya.” But
what he didn’t know, at least in scientific terms, is that it’s a part
of being human…a
human obsession no less.

[AI] Music lessons through Skype

Music lessons through Skype

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: If you thought Skype was just about free phone calls and long chat
sessions, think again. Students from around the world will soon use the popular
voice over the Internet service to learn Carnatic music from the University of
Madras.

From January 2009, the university will offer a six-month certificate course in
Carnatic music through the e-learning mode. We have been offering this course
here in India, but so many Indians abroad come to me and say they want their
children to learn Carnatic music. This is especially meant for them. It will
be the first time a recognised educational institution offers an online
Carnatic music course, said Premeela Gurumurthy, head of the Department of
Indian Music.

Once they have paid the $1,500 fee-only $500 for those below 18-students will
be allowed to log in and access the weekly lesson taught at the university
through Skype. Two-way interaction will also be possible for the Skype users,
says Dr. Gurumurthy. If students are unable to synchronise their timings with
the lesson being taught in Chennai, they will be able to download a recorded
lesson from a server here, she said. The Computer Science Department is helping
to sort out the technical details.

More practical training can be held during visits to Chennai or at the
university's distance education centres across the world. Tests will be
conducted online. The certificate will allow students with any undergraduate
degree to pursue a Masters degree in music.

[AI] Music on the net: Groundbreaking software developed

Sci. Tech.
Music on the net: Groundbreaking software developed

New York (PTI): You like a certain song and want to hear other tracks like it,
but don't know how to find them? Well, don't fret. Ending the
needle-in-a-haystack
problem of searching for music on the Internet is a new audio software.

A team of international researchers developed the groundbreaking audio software
that could help music lovers jump to the hidden beats the new Mpeg-7
specification
will automatically extract and classify audio signals.

According to the researchers, such metadata, as it is called, can be used to
tag audio files so they can be more accurately picked up by search engines
equipped to handle this kind of information.

Such software would be useful not only for delivering a new generation of
musical instruments, but also for designing special effects for cinema and TV,
or for the management of databases in specific applications, such as sounds of
animals, engines and boats, lead researcher Vinet said.

Vinet, who is scientific director at the Paris-based Institute for
Music/Acoustic Research and Coordination (IRCAM), was part of the team that
included
researchers from universities in Spain and Israel, along with companies such as
Oracle and Sony. The EU-funded project was called Cuidado.

The packages they developed consisting of a music browser, an online sound
palette and sound authoring software can analyse and index sound according to
the digital patterns displayed by each particular song.

To do this, the researchers developed a number of techniques for capturing
specific qualities from audio files, such as timbre, energy and rhythm. This
system goes far beyond the methods used online by the music industry.

[AI] Music of the soul

2007-11-11 Thread renuka warriar
The Hindu : Metro Plus Chennai / People : Music of the soul

Online edition of India's National Newspaper

Music of the soul

Have you heard Ritvik Rajan singing on the Asianet reality show? It's
determination that has enabled his parents to help their special child realise
his
potential

HIS SONG IS SPECIAL Rohan and Ritvik Rajan

Asianet (the Malayalam TV Channel) telecasts a music reality show Idea Star
Singer 2007 on week days at 8.30 p.m. What one witnesses is a mix of reactions
from the participants - tears and laughter, the frustration of rejection and
the delight of qualifying in each round. And so, the search goes on for the
best singer who must be blessed with twin abilities - to sing and entertain the
audience.

The viewers and the judges listen with bated breath when the physically
challenged Ritvik Rajan sings. He can't see or speak. Neither does he know what
he has achieved. A conversation with his mother was an eye-opener. It made one
catch a glimpse of the singer's struggle against a virtually hopeless situation.

My first son Rohan was born in 1979. Just as we were recovering from the
initial trauma of a special child being born into the family, Ritvik was born
in 1989. We expected that he would support his elder brother - and when we
realised that he too was visually challenged, it did not come as a shock, as
I had already experienced the worst.

One may come across kids with disabilities; but one seldom understands the
sheer exhaustion of living with one - and coping with his daily needs and
problems
relating to developmental delays, especially the visually challenged. Having
two such children can leave parents devastated.

Your children sing marvellously. Is this talent inherited?

Both my husband and I used to sing and our children are now fulfilling our
dreams.

A special child's parents have to protect him from life's dangers and yet
expose him to life's lessons endlessly. You have managed all this and raised two
children so splendidly. How do you cope?

We wanted our children to be well integrated into the mainstream. We had to
take the risk with Roshan. He was able to adapt to school easily, and we
overcame
our doubts. Moreover, Roshan had other strengths. Ritvik was less aware and
couldn't even communicate. His world was filled only with music; we could not
expose him to the outside environment.

How did you train your children in music?

Roshan practically grew up with a tape recorder. He started learning devotional
songs and mridangam from age three. Then along with regular schooling he
continued learning Carnatic music. He learnt to play the violin and passed a
junior exam in it. Later, while studying for his BA, he switched to Hindustani
classical music.

He has given many performances locally, in others states and abroad. He has
sung for a few audio cassettes and he is B* high artiste of AIR Dharwad. For
Ritvik, things were different. Till he was nine, his only communication with
the outside world was through music. He used to sing Hindi songs and Kannada
bhava geetha with ease even when he was only 5 or 6 years old. His first stage
performance was at 9 with his elder brother where they sang duets with Ritvik
in the female lead. After a hard search I found a teacher, Jayadevi Jangam
Shetty, to teach him Hindustani classical. Later, he learnt under Radha Desai
and started preparing for music exams. He learnt light music under Srikanth
Kulkarni. Subsequently he trained under Sreepad Hegde. He is preparing, at
present, for Madhyama II of Gandharva Maha Vidyala, Miraj. So far he has passed
his exams with distinction. He managed to pass 3 levels of tabla exam with
distinction and preliminary keyboard exam in 1st class, despite motor and
co-ordination problems.

What advice do you have for parents of such children?

Parents are solely responsible for their children. A special child demands more
attention and time. If you accept the child as your own, the battle is half
won. Then it is essential to work towards goals without expecting miracles.
Love is perhaps the most potent resource that any mother can have and use
effectively.

[AI] Music business bounces back, thanks to mobile phones

Music business bounces back, thanks to mobile phones

Karthik Subramaniam

Downloads are on an upward spiral and set to grow

Downloads tipped to overtake sale of CDs
Label companies see the need to come together

— File Photo: Arunangsu Roy Chowdhury

The next generation ``3G'' mobiles with superior data transmission will further
fuel downloads.

CHENNAI: Just two years back, the World Wide Web with its score of free
download portals and Peer-to-peer (P2P) sites, found record industry players,
with
their backs to the wall. But now they are looking to fight fire with fire, by
embracing digital technology through the mobile phone space.

Companies holding rights to popular film music — the staple for the music
business here — have received a shot in their arms with the growing popularity
of ring tones and ring back tones, among India's mobile phone users. Faced with
diminishing returns from the sale of CDs and cassettes, they are no longer
fighting shy about digitising their content.

Recent projections by digital distribution companies, such as
Singapore-headquartered Soundbuzz, point out that music downloads through
mobile phones are
tipped to overtake the sale of CDs and audiocassettes this year. Quoting
research studies of PricewaterHouseCoopers and the non-profit Swiss organisation
International Federation of Phonographic Industry, Soundbuzz CEO Sudhanshu
Sarronwala says India will be the second country, after South Korea, to see
such a trend.

Mobile music downloads, according to industry estimates, are on an upward
spiral and set to grow from annual sales figure of Rs. 450 crore in 2005 to an
estimated Rs. 4,100 crore in 2009. The growth this year, though, is slated to
be the `tipping point' when mobile downloads take over.

Record label companies are seeing the need to come together to fully exploit
the trend. The South India Music Companies Association (SIMCA) in Chennai acts
as a facilitator — bringing together the record labels, digital distribution
companies and the telecom service providers. Between April 1 and September
30 last year, SIMCA was able to get around 35 of its members Rs.1.64 crore as
royalty for its music that was used by mobile companies as ring tones and
ring-back tones. Since September last to this month, returns have been around
Rs. 1.86 crore.

M. Kalyan of 5 Star Audios, one of the prominent publishers of Tamil film
songs, says he suffered nearly a 75 per cent drop in off-the-shelf sales over
the past two years due to various factors such as online piracy and offline
sale of illegal MP3 CDs. ``However thanks to mobile downloads I have been able
to get back 25 per cent of those losses.'' Record labels are eagerly awaiting
the proliferation of 3G mobiles that would facilitate full song downloads.
For most of them, that would be an important factor in making the virtual store
a serious contender to the offline stores. Soon, the biggest music store
could be in your hands.

[AI] Music industry's lone hope: Cell phone

2007-01-03 Thread Sweety Bhalla
Music industry's lone hope: Cell phone

After waging a losing battle against piracy, a battered Indian music industry
is pinning its hopes on the mobile telecom segment to salvage its sagging
bottomlines.

The industry's total revenues have shrunk to Rs 1,000 crore from Rs 1,400 crore
during the last four years, and the mobile industry, with over 136 million
subscribers and a 4 million new users adding up per month, is expected to turn
the tides for the industry.

The Indian music industry is growing in leaps and bounds, but the artistes do
not get the benefits. The revenues actually fall into wrong hands, thanks
to rampant piracy, Indian Music Industry chairman Subroto Chatopadhyay said.

IMI, a non-commercial and non-profit-making organisation, affiliated to the
International Federation of Phonographic Industry, is the umbrella body of music
companies in the country.

The music industry is looking at various modes for increasing its revenues, and
the mobile phone users are at the top of its radar. In an attempt to prevent
piracy, the IMI had recently tied up with handset-maker Nokia to rollout music
phones that cannot forward music to other handsets.

Globally, mobile music, which accounts for 15 per cent of the market, had
posted gross revenues of $4.4 billion in 2005 and this is expected to rise to
$6 billion this year. According to industry estimates, mobile music contributes
around 5 per cent of total revenues in India and is expected to grow to
23 per cent by 2010.

Explaining the importance of the mobile segment, SaReGaMa India Vice-President
Atul Churamani said that a large number of users are buying mobile phones
that have FM radio and MP3 players. Ringtones also form a large chunk of mobile
music market with an average of 70,000-80,000 downloads per day.

The advent of various music integrated handsets (like M4A, AAC, real audio, MP4
and video formats like MPEG3 and MPEG4) and the flexibility of storing music
on detachable cards with 256 MB capacity (upto 50 songs) and 512 MB (upto 2,000
songs) will help the music industry.

According to Vineet Taneja, director (Multimedia), Nokia India: Music on the
move has become an important part of the mobile market with sales of MP3
audio/video
handsets posting a rising trend. Moreover, with the introduction of legitimate
music and buying channels, the music industry may expect some good times
ahead.

The market of MP3-enabled handsets has doubled over the past one year and at
present is expected to be around 25 per cent of the total mobile phone sales
in the country. Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh was of the opinion that music on the
move would turn the fortunes of the industry.

Piracy is growing at an alarming rate of over 56 per cent in the country. This
is also affecting the growth prospects of the sector, which rather than
posting a minimum 30 per cent annual growth in revenues, is sliding year after
