[Bug 9514] 2.6.24-rc4 hwmon it87 probe fails

2008-02-25 Thread bugme-daemon

--- Comment #39 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-02-25 00:17 ---
The BIOS indeed doesn't reserve 0x290-0x29f, but it reserves 0x290-0x294, with
no good reason as far as I can see.

This will cause the system to run unstable is another way to say that they
have no idea what they are talking about and did not understand your request at
all. At this point it is probably better to just give up on them and take good
note that Gigabyte support is responsive but clueless.

The Abit AX78 may have the same error, I haven't had yet a chance to take a
closer look at this board.

At least detecting this bios error shouldn't be hard:

1. Is there a _PR_C000 in the DSDT bytecode?
2. Look for _PR_CPU0, do we have one hit and it's direct after _PSL?
= Broken DSDT...

The acpi table may be fixable on the fly much easier at the bytecode level:

At the time the DSDT table would be loaded via a file (Kernel with DSDT loader
patch) a hotfix could be added in front of it.

Detecting a broken bios as described above, replace _PR_CPU0 with _PR_C000,
tell the user we have altered a broken bios DSDT, we still allow loading a
custom DSDT for custom patches.

Not a very elegant solution and quite a hack but this should fix this error and
shouldn't do any harm. The bios is already broken.

Note: This doesn't consider a DSDT with External (\_PR_.CPU0) in it.

This is a bug in the ACPI interpreter in the kernel - editing the DSDT is only
a workaround until the guys at Intel figure out how this DSDT works on Windows,
and can then apply that to the ACPI interpreter.

(Bob - any updates from either you or Lin Ming on this bug?)

but somebody recommended option: EC_INTR=0
to kernel line in grub and I'm testing it also - so far (lets say half a day)
no errors with this parameter regarding battery and acpi

let me try this option for few more days and lets see how it works
on the other hand: to implement your patch support for folders /proc/acpi must
be ON in config of kernel while you (kernel dev.) are going now to use /sys
what is then the reason to use both: /proc/acpi and /sys ?

Len, thanks for taking your time to look at this. I initially reported this
roblem around 2.6.24, then Andrew asked me to enter it into bugzilla. Now I
cannot reproduce this problem with anything starting from 2.6.25-rc2. I'm
changing this bug to need more information for now, will come back if I
manage to reproduce it.

I expect the problem is:
  - The external graphics ACPI device is using the traditional method to switch
brightness, it also works for the internal (Intel) graphics device
  - The internal ACPI graphics device (Intel card) is using a feature that
needs
in kernel graphics driver support.

This needs fixing in BIOS and I expect Lenovo is willing to do this.
Intel should discuss this internally with their graphics drivers programmers
and provide a OSI ability string.

Latest working kernel version:
None

Distribution:
Any (I can perform tests and further debugging on Ubuntu 8.04, or possibly
archlinux)

Hardware Environment:
Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook p7010, intel 855GM.

Problem Description:

I first filed this bug at freedesktop against hal
(http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12638), but the hal guys suggested
I take it over here. Basically, the problem is that hal cannot get/set
backlight on my laptop since there is no sysfs interface to deal with that.
Using Fn-F6/Fn-F7, I can manually change backlight.

lshal | grep panel

returns nothing. I'll attach the output of dmidecode.

Please give me more information on how to debug this issue. Many thanks!

I finally found that the problematic option is Kernel-user space relay
support. I have build 2.6.25-rc3 with CPU idle enabled and user space relay
support disabled. This kernel works correctly. Then I build a kernel with
these 2 options enabled and it crashes when X is started. Maybe Xorg is not the
direct cause of the problem but the crash occurs when X is started. It's even
impossible to connect via SSH to the PC. So, not only X is crashed but the
kernel also.

[Bug 9163] Resume form memory suspend causes about a half a minute wait

2008-02-25 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9163

--- Comment #62 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-02-25 12:03 ---
Tested 2.6.25-rc3 today. It appeared harder to reproduce the problem, I did
s2disk, s2disk, s2disk, and then s2ram. Problems only occurred on resume from
that s2ram. Did not test further, but I did notice the following in dmesg:

[ 945.521152] ACPI: EC: missing OBF confirmation, don't expect it any longer.
[ 945.605157] ACPI: EC: missing write data confirmation, don't expect it any
lo
nger.
...
[ 956.809345] ACPI: EC: acpi_ec_wait timeout, status = 40, expect_event = 2
[ 956.809349] ACPI: EC: input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction

Incidentally, this was also the first time that I had the delays on resume. I'm
attaching full logs, for good measure :-)

I hadn't wait enough for the problem to occur but CPU idle PM support also
causes a problem. If I enabled it and if I wait a bit more than 30 seconds to
type my password in the KDM login window, the screen is also blocked. The
computer is not crashed since I can still make an SSH connection but it's
impossible to type the password. The cursor stops blinking and I can't use the
mouse to click on the buttons of this window. The only ways to power down my
computer is via SSH or using the power button (which shows that ACPI events are
still working and catched by acpid).

It may have been a coincidence that the
workqueue was running during a suspend.

I think it is because it does not happen every time.

--- Comment #12 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-02-23 15:27 ---
To any ACPI experts reading this bug report: Is it truly necessary to register
a new device (acpi_add_single_object) while the system is suspending or
resuming?

Would it be okay to block the device_add() call until after the resume is
finished, instead of failing it?

[Bug 9754] Sensors not updated causing CPU to heat after suspend/hibernate - Acer Aspire 5315

--- Comment #15 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-02-21 16:28 ---
(In reply to comment #14)
I see the same issue for Aser Aspire 5720G.

P.S. It looks like bug 9167 No TZ.temp update, no fan control (64-bit only) -
Acer Aspire 5720, 7720Z - Santa Rosa, T7300 is somehow related to the issue.

It seems to be related, but the bug with the 5315 is not 64-bit only. The bug
appears even with Windows XP/Vista if the ACER tools are not installed. The
problem seems to come from a non-standard hardware and is NOT a bug in the
64-bit linux kernel.

I tried to hack some code in the ACPI module, I tried to update my BIOS, I
tried to play with the DSTD. No luck...

*sigh*

[Bug 9961] Oops with docking and undocking, device after docking not connected

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9961

--- Comment #12 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-02-25 17:25 ---
Comment #6 seems to indicate that my transparent bridge sizing patch
is no longer the prime suspect but if I can reproduce the problem
with my T41p I will try to figure out the Oops disappears when
my change is removed. Unfortunately, I am having trouble locating
a Dock II.

[Bug 9995] 2.6.25-rc1 regression - backlight controlls do not work - ThinkPad T61

--- Comment #18 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-02-25 19:43 ---
(In reply to comment #17)
 I expect the problem is:
   - The external graphics ACPI device is using the traditional method to
 switch
brightness, it also works for the internal (Intel) graphics device
We don't have an external graphics card on this laptop, how could the ACPI
control methods work? This is a BIOS problem to me.
The Intel IGD Opregion Support is on the way.
But it mainly changes the behavior of events handling, like display switch
hotkey events, lid close/open and dock/undock. A SCI is fired upon these
events, notify the ACPI video device and ACPI video driver notify the Intel
video driver to do the actual work by poking the proper OpRegion fields.
IMO, _BCM/_BCL/_BQC methods should work anyway.
I'll look at the AML code later.

Patch pending, but half the issue Lukas noticed is caused by the EC issue
tracked in 10100.

One has to revert commit 208c70a45624400fafd7511b96bc426bf01f8f5e for testing
if this bug is fixed (until bug 10100 is fixed, that is).

[Bug 9823] battery info sometimes not available - MSI GX700

2008-02-25 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9823

--- Comment #26 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-02-25 22:00 ---
Thanks for the info.
From the info in comment #18 we can know that sometimes the design capacity is
less than the remaining capacity.
  remaining capacity: 3769 mAh
  present: yes
  design capacity: 785 mAh
It is uncorrect. And the above info is obtained by calling the AML code
(_BST, _BIF), in which the internal EC RAM is accessed.

From the info in commetn #23 we can know that sometimes the returned
current_capacity is 0x and the returned current_current is 0x.
So os reports the message of unknown state.
In fact the info is also related with BIOS.

From the info in comment #22 we can know that sometimes the status of the
battery is not present. In fact the status of the battery is obtaned by the
following AML code:
   Method (_STA, 0, NotSerialized)  {
   If (MBTS) {
 Return (0x1F)
 } Else{
  Return (0x0F) }
}
From the above code the status of the battery is determined by the value of
MBTS, which is located in internal EC access region.

According to the above analysis it seems that the bug is related with EC and
there are two possible reasons .
   a. the broken EC firmware ( related with BIOS).
   b. Uncorrect EC I/O access (related with EC driver)
Maybe a is the mainly root cause.

Will you please upgrade BIOS and see whether the problem still exists?

[Bug 9945] No AC-adapter-specific events + no events when opening lid - Sony VGN-N130G

2008-02-25 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9945

--- Comment #16 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-02-25 22:35 ---
Created an attachment (id=14998)
 -- (http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=14998action=view)
dmesg output

Hello,

What Rui said in comment #13 is right. There is no 0x80 notify event for AC
adapter. So when AC adapter is unplugged/plugged, the method of _Q21/_Q22 will
be executed and generate BAT0,CPU event.

I'm sorry, but what does it actually mean for a regular user like myself? :)
Does it mean that it's impossible to get the AC events on this laptop?

The remaing is the lid problem. Maybe it is related to EC. Will you unset
CONFIG_SONYPI in kernel configuration and do the following test? (Of course
the patch in comment #13 should be applied . The CONFIG_SONY_LAPTOP should be
 set).

As the kernel was already configured like this, I only echoed the settings as
asked. The dmesg output attached.

Greetings,
W. Szostak

[Bug 9823] battery info sometimes not available - MSI GX700

--- Comment #27 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-02-25 22:47 ---
that is great comment sir :-)
but let me tell you the story: I already changed BIOS maybe 10 times,
on MSI web page
(http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetailtype=biosmaincat_no=135prod_no=1227)
there are 2 BIOS versions: one for XP one for Vista (whatever it means - BIOS
is BIOS imho but I might be wrong)
So I tried all BIOS version I could find so far - old, newer, newest, XP, Vista
... etc - always the same problem
One thing: on XP there is no such problem (if this info might help anyway)
So, I don't know what else I can do to solve/help to solve this problem
