[Bug 10311] acpi_cpufreq driver won't load for penryn T9300 cpu on hp notebook

2008-03-26 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10311

--- Comment #7 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-03-26 03:44 ---
after following these instructions to look at the disassembled DSDT.dat

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Fix_Common_ACPI_Problems#Diagnosing_a_Buggy_DSDT

I took a peek at Method (_OSC, 4, NotSerialized)

and on line 3326 of the disassembled DSDT, it indeed says EIDO, not EI*0
the line reads CreateDWordField (UID0, 0x00, EID0)

it does not say EI*0 in the decompiled DSDT.

Is this a possible indication of a runtime error if the EID0 is becoming EI*0
in the generated table?

I do not have much experience with ACPI, but it seems odd to me that the
deconstructed DSDT would not have the incorrect EI*0, which apparently is the
problem, but the table trying to be loaded by the kernel does.

If i am understanding that method correctly it is somehow checking which lines
to add to the SSDT2 table some sort if then type structure. But if isal
generated code says EID0, why does the kernel see EI*0

sorry if this is completely off base, but I really find it odd that the method
doesn't match the apparent output error.

I am attaching the decompiled DSDT.dat incase that helps.

It was made with the iasl -d dsdt.aml dsdt.asl command.

I also tried to used acpidump to get the DSDT, but it gives me errors and I
cannot get a DSDT this way.
# acpidump acpidump.out
$ acpixtract DSDT acpidump  DSDT.dat
$ iasl -d DSDT.dat

hope this means something.

--- Comment #9 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-03-26 07:40 ---
Hi, Kevin
There is no difference between the DSDT.dsl in comment #7 and that in the
comment #8. In fact the error happens in the SSDT2.dsl file as described in the
comment #5. (SSDT2.dsl is extracted from the SSDT2.dat, which is located in the
address of 0xBFECFEDF).

Will you please use the pmtool-20071116 to dump the acpi tables?
The pmtool-20071116 can be found in the following address:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/lenb/acpi/utils/

   Thanks.

(In reply to comment #23)
 Gary,
Please e-mail the patch in comment #20 to greg-kh
if you have not already, as i'm not sure he scans bugzilla regularly.
On the assumption that your patch is in the right spot,

Len, I have not sent the patch to Greg yet but had planned to
do so today. However, I just noticed a discussion concerning
another more serious problem which is being blamed on my transparent
bridge sizing removal change:
  http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/3/26/94

I'm moving this sighting to the drivers/pci category

Correct.

while marking it RESOLVED to indicate a patch is available to test.

Also correct but the fix is now the patch that reverts the
transparent bridge sizing removal change:

upstream I'll change this to KERN_WARNING.
Fedora boots with quiet by default, and so KERN_WARNING
will not be printed on the default boot.

for users that delete the quiet, they'll get this
message along with a zillion others, which is appropriate.
going to KERN_DEBUG and thus requiring debug on the
cmdline to see this message seems to be burying it
a little too deep, as it is a valid warning after all.

also, note also that 2.6.25-rc7 made this message less likely:

[Bug 9167] No TZ.temp update, no fan control (64-bit only) - Acer Aspire 5720, 7720Z - Santa Rosa, T7300

--- Comment #71 from [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-03-26 11:57 ---
My experience with BIOS v1.32 and Ubuntu Hardy (Kernel 2.6.24-12-generic
x86_64) is as follows.
1. The DSDT is compiled with the Microsoft ASL compiler, and has all the errors
that the v1.31 lacks. However, there is new code. I cleaned it up using the
v1.31 source as a model.
2. When booted with ec_intr=0 (see comment 54), the fan is on all the time, at
the slowest speed, even though the temperature in the thermal_zone is below the
threshold. The fan didn't speed up, and the thermal_zone temperature was not
updated, when I pushed the temperature higher by loading the CPU.
3. When booted without ec_intr=0, the fan stayed off, unless I turned it on
(see comment 62).
4. When booted with ec_intr=0 and acpi_osi=!Linux, the fan stayed on all the
time. However, the thermal_zone value temperature was updated, and the fan sped
up, when I pushed the temperature higher by loading the CPU. When I took the
load off, the temperature dropped, and the fan slowed down. However, the fan
never stopped altogether.
5. By ear, I can detect 4 different fan speeds, which seem to come in to play
at 50, 66, 74 and 80 C, when I set the temperature in thermal_zone manually.
Someone with better hearing may be able to identify more!
6. Once the fan is running, shut-off temperatures are a few degrees lower, eg.
45.

Bug as it was responded to by Acer America:

I've installed Linux 64-bit. The fans do not start and the system gets hot
rapidly. I am using BIOS v1.25. You can find out more at:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/process_bug.cgi

- Is there a fix?
- Is it possible to flash to BIOS v1.32 available from the European website at
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5720.html ? Will that driver
work with my model Aspire 5720Z? Will it fix the problem?

Customer (Jeffrey Hundstad) 03/25/2008 11:25 PM
The URL to find out more info was wrong above. Please use this instead:

Response (Hal) 03/26/2008 01:46 PM
Dear Jeffrey Hundstad,

Thank you for contacting Acer America. Acer America does not provide Linux
drivers or support. I do not know of any plans to provide Linux drivers , BIOS
updates or support in the future. You can try checking with the vendors of the
internal components to see if they offer Linux drivers. I'm sorry I am unable
to assist with this issue.

Customer (Jeffrey Hundstad) 03/26/2008 02:17 PM
You DO NOT plan on supplying BIOS updates for this machine anymore?
Really?

The second part of the question remains, does the BIOS v1.32 from Europe work
with the American 5720?

Response (Hal) 03/26/2008 02:36 PM
Dear Jeffrey Hundstad,

Thank you for contacting Acer America. I apologize but I have checked the
records and there are no available BIOS updates for the system. Also, Acer only
supports the pre-installed hardware and software for the system so we do not
have information if the BIOS v1.32 will work. If you prefer to download the
BIOS update, please note that the original BIOS flash will not be available
from Acer. You may download it at your own discretion. Acer will not be able to
provide support if the BIOS update does not work properly.

I've had same issues on a desktop AMD64 PC using 2.6.18 kernel that came with
Debian4 r3 Etch AMD64.
This issue existed as far back as 6 months ago - I think it was kernel 2.6.15
then

- on resume (from console) s2ram -f -p does not anymore give me my display
back, however blindly typing reboot or s2ram again works

So it actually resumed, but just haven't display. Can you try the enable
CONFIG_FB_INTEL (with this maybe you don't need s2ram, just directly do 'echo
mem /sys/power/state). In my test, the new intel driver works perfectly.

OK, first sorry for the noise; but obviously, I'm anxious to get my laptop
working...

The status of this bug is NEEDINFO. What specifically are we waiting on?
I'm willing to help.

BIOS v1.33 is available at
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5720.html
or
ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_5720/vista/Bios/

File: v1.33.zip 1401 KB 03/26/2008 02:54:00 PM

I have no idea if this will work for the American laptop. But someone with the
European model can sure try it. There is no change log on this version.

I don't have an intel but an ati card (radeonhd X driver) and it does not work
even under the console... however under the console it still works at least in
2.6.24 ...
