dmesg of 2.6.30-rc2 with ff69.. reverted

Hardware: IBM Thinkpad X40, 1.2Ghz Pentium M 1.5GB ram
Software: Debian unstable 32bit

ff69f2bba67bd45514923aaedbf40fe351787c59 caused a regression when booting-up on
my setup. See

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13087

for reference. This issue has been fixed with
f461ddea0af8b98e2b7940eba9c693b0ee44d64a. Unfortunately ff69.. also caused a
resume hang on my setup, which is _not_ yet fixed.

Problem: 2.6.30-rc2 hangs after in the second suspend/resume cycle when
resuming. The fan and harddisk spin up and the lcd light switches on (and shows
the blinking cursor) but then the machine hangs. Only holding down the power
button for 4 secs helps. The suspend indicator light does not switch to the
blinking mode like it does when resuming normally (before it switches off
completely). Reverting ff69.. on top of 2.6.30-rc2 fixes the issue.

Latest kernel I tried is v2.6.30-rc5-96-ga4d7749. But then reverting f461.. and
ff69.. didn't fully fixed the problem: I could only resume two times (instead
of only once) before the machine hung when resuming.

Kernels before ff69 work flawless (at least the ones I've tested, and I'm
updating -linus from git fairly often).

I'll add the dmesg one suspend-resume cylce of 2.6.30-rc2 with ff69 reverted.

[Bug 11832] irq 18: nobody cared on Toshiba Satellite A100

--- Comment #38 from M. Vefa Bicakci bic...@superonline.com 2009-05-11
15:01:21 ---
Hello,

Unfortunately, I have bad news. I had to restart my computer
a few times after an uptime of 6 or 7 days because of X crashes
which are unrelated to this bug.

After those reboots, my longest uptime was 20 days, which lasted
from April 16th to May 6th or 7th. (The reason of the reboot was
a hard lock-up caused by the SD card reader, and even Alt-SysRq-B
didn't work.)

During that 20 day-long uptime, no nobody cared messages were
emitted by the kernel. However, because the spurious interrupt
threshold is at its default value of 99900, I am guessing that
it might take even longer than 20 days to get a nobody cared
message.

The only thing I can think of doing is trying again with 2.6.29.3,
this time being even more careful so that a reboot does not become
necessary.

I would appreciate any advice.

Regards,

M. Vefa Bicakci

[Bug 13268] ACPI interrupt storm

2009-05-11 Thread bugzilla-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13268

--- Comment #14 from Christopher Horler cshor...@gmail.com 2009-05-11
16:33:29 ---
(In reply to comment #12)
 then my question is that,
 1. does this problem exist in every kernel you've tried?

Every 2.6 series kernel.

 2. does this happen from the beginning, or it's caused at runtime by some
 specific actions?

The system normally starts in a stable state - unless rebooting after the
interrupt storm. In which case the storm sometimes continues (I think turning
off for a few minutes normally resets everything).

When the system is in a stable state

echo disable /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/gpe00

is effective. I have now added this to the boot.local script, and so far I
have had no more interrupt storms.

Normally I can cause it by running some graphically intensive websites (with
lots of CSS and flash on the pages). It seems to be independent of the
graphics driver in use with X (I've tried ATI's and the open source radeon
driver). I think it's in some way related to CPU load.

It's impossible to give an exact scenario which will initiate the interrupt
storm, sometimes it won't happen.

Thanks for your help!

Chris

Are you suggesting that setting acpi.power_nocheck=1 is a work-around for this
bug? If so, please explain, provide references or other. This particular bug
report goes back 3 years, and this is the first mention of this boot option.

A quick test on a system exhibiting the behavior showed no change when this
boot option was added.

if 2.6.26 worked out of the box without any command-line workarounds,
and later kernels do not, then this is a regression -- marking it as such.

Can you still boot 2.6.26 on battery, and show us

 acpi_osi=Linux
why? what changes to you see when you add this option?
please attach the output from acpidump

 ACPI_TOSHIBA

Do you still have the same problem with this is excluded from the kernel build?

Please paste the output of
grep . /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/* /proc/acpi/fan/*/*

before and after suspend.

The output above shows a single active trip point at 70C,
so I would not expect to hear the fan speed up until that
temperature is reached.

However, after it is reached, you should hear the fan speed up
and should see that indicated in the grep output above

please add the boot parameter initcall_debug so that we can see what initcall

[Bug 13233] 2.6.27 regression - boot delays on battery, but not on A/C - Compaq Presario F756NR

Hi, Dmitry
Agree with what Shaohua said. When C1E feature is detected on AMD box, the
max c-state is limited to 1. And in such case the local apic can't work in
one-shot mode. Instead when the broadcast timer is used, the box can work well.

And from the test in comment #10 we know that the local apic timer works in
periodic mode when nohz=off highres=off. But when nohz=off is added, the
local apic timer still works in one-shot mode. And the box can't be booted.

Thanks.

try the debug patch, in which the one-shot mode is disabled for the local APIC
timer

Will you please try the debug patch on the latest kernel and see whether the
box can be booted?
In the debug patch the one-shot mode is disabled for the local APIC timer.
   thanks.
