Hi,
The reason why you get only 2 weeks old act log records, probably, is the
retention period defined for activity log is 14 days. So, there are no more
records in act log. Try to use SET ACTLOGRETENTION admin command to change
it. Take into account that it influences DB size, because act log is
actually a DB table.

I happen to find the ibmtsm.baroc and the ibmtsm.rls files shipped with tsm

Re: BACKUP to TAPE, PERFORMANCE

2002-05-30 Thread Seay, Paul

This is likely not a tape issue. 52GB/hr is about 14.8MB/sec. I am betting
your disk cannot read the data any faster than that. Unless the data is not
compressable at all the typical rates for a SCSI Magstar drive are 25+MB/sec
and can get as high as 34 on Ultra SCSI if the cables are real short. Fibre
Channel easily gets 33. What kind of disk is the source?

HI Francisco,

as far as I know the maximun native throughput of a 3590 drive is 12 MB/s.
If you want something to refer to as a rule of thumb, these are the
performance of the 3590 library:

(Embedded image moved to file: pic19254.pcx)

so you can check if you are having good performance in your environment.

For more information about 3590 tape performances you can refer to this

Hi everybody,

My question is simple. We are running selective backup
through Gigabit, and my STGpool is 3590 Tape Pool. I
want to know, how many Gigabytes you backup per hour??

For bigger files I get a 52 GByte/hour. And I think
these is very slow. This test is only 1 client and no
other clients are accessing to Server.

Any Ideas

Thanks, Fran.

If not try this:

Don't forget to check the Client Option Set as well. You may have an option
in there for DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL and it may even be set to NOT allow overrides

Can you be sure that since you've set it up nothing has changed. It would
be interesting to see current dsm.opt of local cluster node. Also the
way how schedules are started may sched some light. Also check file backup
dates on those unnecessary filespaces - maybe someone manually invoked
dsmc with local option file and this is not done by regular schedules.

The way I have set this up is to use the CLUSTER name in TSM for the
shared storage, and the two local computer names for the local drives.

nodename
Cluster - controls the F,G,H,I,J drives (CLUSTERNODE YES option)
Server1 - controls c and d drive (Domain C, Domain D...)
Server2 - controls c and d drive (Domain C, Domain D...)

I have 2 schedules on each node - one for local backps and one for cluster
backups. I created a group in the cluster admin to control backups service
for the shared drives and keep the local node backups to automatic

The only explanation is that server1 somehow is getting
DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL.
Check carefully which dsm.opt is used when cluster
instance goes to
server1 and are there any DOMAIN options in a optionset
associated to that
 node.
If domain all-local gets somehow into local node then
is have two
current copies of shared files. But if cluster resources
are backed up as
server1 instead of cluster the only way to
distinguish which version
is the current is checking the date or very-very
carefully follow
 failovers.

 Subject:NT Cluster TSM

 Hello,
I'd like to ask a question about NT cluster with TSM..
I have got an NT Cluster and the backup is made with TSM.
On the TSM
 server
side I've got defined 2 server, each one for each real
server: server1 and
server2. There are another two server defined for shared
disks: disk1(disk
 f:) and disk2 (disk g:).
 There are four file spaces:
 FileSpace Name Node Name
 \\server1\c$server1
 \\server2\c$server2
 \\cluster\f$disk1
 \\cluster\g$disk2
The DOMAIN option in the opt files are
 Server1 DOMAIN C:
 Server2 DOMAIN C:
 disk1 DOMAIN F:
 disk2 DOMAIN G:
From the backup point of view it works fine, the problem
arises when the
shared disks are moved from one real server to the other.
In this situation the shared disks are considered as
local disks for the
real servers and a full backup of those disks are made,
and the file
 spaces
 are as follows
 FileSpace Name Node Name
 \\server1\c$server1
 \\server1\f$server1
 \\server1\g$server1
 \\server2\c$server2
 \\cluster\f$disk1
 \\cluster\g$disk2

The creation of the two new file spaces is normal? Is
this situation ok?

Another problem arises when there is a need of restoring
a file: where is
the backup of one file residing in disk f:? in
\\server1\f$ or in
\\cluster\f$ or in both? Which one is the most recent?
and other than the
 last one?

Can anyone help me in clarifing those questions?

Re: TSM monitored by TME

2002-05-30 Thread Ran Harel

The problem with the default rls is that the baroc does not
match the rls:
The old approach for TSM adapter was to create an event class
for each message, which ment thousands of classes resulted with
heavy load on TME.
The new approach is one Server event class and one Client event
class and one for each TDP.

The problem is that the baroc file is built for the new approach
and the rls file matches the old approach. This is on my opinion
a bug or something. maybe there is a fix out
there, bu I couldn't find it.

Anyway, either add the classes which appear in the rls file to the
baroc file or change every rule in the rls file to meet with
the new approach.
The first way is easier...

ANR9999D Error message: Do you how to figure out this message?

2002-05-30 Thread Meensun Ahn

---
O/S: SunOS 5.6
TSM: Version 4, Release 2, Level 1.15
Tape library: scalar 1000 from ADIC
Tape drive: AIT2 drive
Tape : AIT2 (50GB~100GB)
---

Dear All,

Situation we face
I am wondering where I can get more detailed information about ANRD error message.
Actually we have been suffering from so many problems including robot, drive problems
and so on.
Also we've got many times ANR8300E Changer Failure error msg and then TSM just
died...T_T
But funny thing is there is no tape stuck in the drive even though the library LCD
screen says for example Element 1212(drive12) is obstructed.
Last night we had the same problem again and I tried to update the drive12 onlin=no
then all the other drives are working fine no more changer failure since the last
reboot.
So I think this error msg is misled by something else.
Please if you had faced similar situation before please get back to me.

Questions
As you see the log below, I found something going wrong with space reclamation on
c3(copy pool for offsite).
As soon as I did update stg c3 recl=60 from recl=100( basically no space
reclamation), I've got the ANR999D error message.
This error msg just never stopped!!
Scared and put it back. Then I tried it again after set CONTEXTMESSAGING on to get
details.
You can see the red marked detailed information about ANR999D msg below but simply I
don't know what it means.
Can you let me know good reference or any documents?

Thanks,

 If not try this:

You can also add a where clause if you would like.

I am planning a TSM Server move from OS390/MVS to AIX. My largest
storage pool is about 73gig and is spread across 32 volumes of about
2.3gig each. On AIX I will have a 128gig file system so I could put
that storage pool into a single volume if that makes sense.

My question is should I spread the storage pool across multiple tms
volumes and if so what size should I make them? So should I allocate it
as one large volume?

Hi,

If you install the TSM ODBC Driver and point it at your TSM Server's IP
Address and Port 1500, you can do this query in Excel or MS Access.
In MS Excel click on Data, Get external data, new database query, Click on
the Data Source name that is your ODBC connection Name, and log in to your
TSM Server. This will give you a list of tables in your TSM Database.

Hmm...
All of our disk storage pools are larger than 2 GB and have large
files enabled because we do see files larger than 2GB come in from
clients...

I'm quite sure I'm not going to want to slice up a 36Gb disk into 18
2GB filesystems just to use direct I/O. I think the drive head contention
would eat me alive.

I'm not sure where they expect this functionality to be used when
they have those 2 limitations on direct I/O...

I'm curious if anyone feels that the new AIXDIRECTIO option in TSM 5.1
affects their opinions about how to utilize disk for storage pools. TSM
5.1 also has an Async I/O option (AIX). For more info, refer to
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/pdfs/sg246554.pdf, starting at
about page 107. The AIXDIRECTIO option does not work with
large-file-enabled filesystems, so the filesystem must be 2GB or
smaller. This option bypasses VMM file cache.

Burak,

As far as I understand it, the reclamation of offsite copy pool carts is not
a DRM function, reclamation is a standard part of TSM where a new tape is
produced locally that consolidates the carts offsite that are partly full.
The thing that DRM does for you is to manage the movement of which carts to
send offsite and which ones to bring back because they have been reclaimed.
I think that's right.

John.

Hi,
I am trying to understand DRM concept especially the reclamation part.
As the volumes become FULL they will be reclaimed when the data is low
(define in pool's RECLAIM value)
even if they are offsite copies. The primary pool volumes onsite will be
used
and
reclaimed EMPTY copy pool volumes will be returned.

Now my point comes. I have a schedule to backup primary pool every day
to
copy pool. I have one FILLING volume everyday to send to offsite. Then,
there
will
be 20 volumes offsite (with FILLING status, and very little data on it)
What is
the DRM's solution
to reclaim such volumes? Is it to bring them onsite and use  MOVE DATA
command?

Instead of deleting and re-defining the schedule , we've changed our
procedures to just update the schedule with a new starttime/startdate of
NOW+hh:ss and TODAY. Saves having to del/define/associate everything. This
way you can manually define the schedule the way you want before creating
the script. And then change the association if need be without script
changes. You can't update a script if the server is currently running that
script. Our daily storage pool backup script runs with lots of WAIT=YES, so
it's difficult to update that script. We've tried to move as much OUT of the
script as we can to ease changes.

Unfortunately, UPDATEing the schedule also seems to remove any event
history. Just like deleting a schedule, all event history is removed, too.

ANU2508E Wrong write state- any ideas?

2002-05-30 Thread Lisa Cabanas

Hello *SMers,

On one of our production boxes (data warehouse) this error occurred
yesterday during a hot backup with TDPO 2.2.0.2 (most current patch
available on the ftp site). I can't find anything in the activity log or in
the errpt for the TSM server and the client that correlates with this
error. The message for ANU2508 is:

ANU2508E Wrong write state
Explanation: The operation must be in WRITE state.
System Action: The system returns to the calling
procedure.
User Response: Contact TSM support.

and I am asking for the list's help before I call support. Any one have
any ideas? The storage pool target is ESS disk, with no limit on the size.

/VAR File System on AIX 4.3.3 and TSM Error

I am getting this error message on my TSM Server and was
not sure if these files are cached and replaced with new
files causing the ANE4005E error below. Also, is there a
specific reason that the /VAR file system should be backed
up on a regular basis. Thanks.

frame relay nodes-- can I avoid another full backup?

2002-05-30 Thread Lisa Cabanas

Hello again,

here's the deal-

we have approximately 50 frame relay nodes that backup to TSM servers.
These NT boxes' drives are almost full (max is 16G on these) and partitions
were created to hold data (D:\) and app shares (E:\).

We are getting replacements (80G and expandable), and will be xcopying data
from the old to the new, but the OS will be 2000. The plan right now is to
just create a big D:\ drive and xcopy the files from the old D: and E:
drives to this new D: drive. Host names may remain the same, but maybe
not-- since we won't be a full 2000 enterprise, and 2000 can't emulate an
old NT BDC, the old boxes may remain in the remote locations to serve as
the BDCs-- without changing their hostnames.

How can I tell/trick TSM to not backup up these new files on a different
drive again and to know about previous versions of files with the old drive
letter? Or is this issue moot due to the OS change? I can rename the node
data and resolve the issue with a full backup due to the change in
hostname, but I don't see any way to rename the filespace names to keep
from having to do a full backup. I am not up to speed on 5.1, maybe the
ability is there with the new code?

The below output is from a simple select statement. I hate to ask this again
but its been a while since I've done it and I forget how to format the
columns. What I need to do is extract the node names from the backup server
so that I can then perform operations on them. How do I increase the width
of the column to get the desired effect? I suppose set sqldisplaymode would
do it but I'm actually running the select query from a perl script via a
dsmadmc command.

i.e.:

@RESULT = `/opt/Tivoli/tsm/client/admin/bin/dsmadmc -id=admin -pa=admin
select node_name from nodes`;

returns the below when what I want is to store the node names in an array

Re: BACKUP to TAPE, PERFORMANCE

2002-05-30 Thread Gianluca Mariani1

Francisco,
those numbers are normal. 3590 drives have a native transfer rate of
12MB/s. that makes around the 50GB/h mark. to have more than that you have
to compress your data, and the 3590 can compress up to 3:1. whether you can
do that or not depends on your data (3:1 compression ratios are generally
achieved only in mainframe world; in open systems you would expect
something closer to 2:1). other than that, it depends on the number of tape
drives used, and the bandwidth occupancy at backup time if you are in a LAN
environment as it would seem to be your case.

Re: BACKUP to TAPE, PERFORMANCE II

2002-05-30 Thread Gianluca Mariani1

Fran,
one parameter you can change is Bufpoolsize on the server. for 1GB of real
RAM you should put it to 131072. the other thing is to turn compression
off, in a single client, fast client, fast server, fast network it gives
better performance.
then on the AIX server try
no -o rfc1323=1
no -o thewall=131072
no -o sb_max=1310720
use vmtune to view virtual memory settings. if the filesystem is jfs you
should put maxpgahead to maximum (-R256). stop virtual memory paging by
modifying minperm/maxperm parameters (default is -P80, lower it to -P50 but
watch minperm).

on the client check if compression actually makes files bigger, and check
how many retries there are when sending data to server. put TxnGroupMax to
the maximum (256) if retries are rare. you can raise TxnByteLimit (maximum
is 2097152). MoveBatchSize should be 1000, MoveSizeThresh 500 (2048 for TSM
5.1), set ExpInterval to 0.

then pray...

Storage Pool Size

2002-05-30 Thread David E Ehresman

I am planning a TSM Server move from OS390/MVS to AIX. My largest
storage pool is about 73gig and is spread across 32 volumes of about
2.3gig each. On AIX I will have a 128gig file system so I could put
that storage pool into a single volume if that makes sense.

My question is should I spread the storage pool across multiple tms
volumes and if so what size should I make them? So should I allocate it
as one large volume?

Hi TSMers,

there is a special offer of IBM3590 10GB cartridges (amount approx. 450). Some of them
were used for tests (only for a short period of time). The majority of them have never
been used. All cartridges have been erased and are therefore useable. The cartridges
will be available by mid of June.

Re: SQL/scripts

2002-05-30 Thread Rushforth, Tim

I'm not prepared to post our scripts yet but will tell you some of the
things that we run daily:

Report on failed client schedules
- q event * * enddate=today begintime=NOW-23:59 endtime=NOW f=d
- filter and report on anything other than completed

Report on Client errors (mostly failed files)
- select MESSAGE,DOMAINNAME,NODENAME,DATE_TIME from actlog where -
(date_timecurrent_timestamp - 1 days and originator='CLIENT' AND
SEVERITY='E') -
ORDER BY DOMAINNAME,NODENAME

- Report on file spaces not backed up in over x days
q fi f=d
- filter and report on specific nodes and days, depending on
complexity could be easier done with SQL

- Report on all server error messags and some warning messages reported over
last 24 hours
- we just do a q actlog then filter for specific messages
- we stated with all error messages then slowly filtered out ones we
didn't want
- we started with no warning\informational and then slowly added
ones we wanted
- this might be easier with sql but we are using a perl script!

- we also run an online error monitor that emails, net sends, or pages us on
various errors throughout the day

- Daily\weekly processing report
- client report from accounting log, reports on gb, transfer rate,
media wait ... for backup/restore, archive/retrieve

- TSM Health Check every 5 minutes - email and page if TSM is down

- TSM System check - checks for things like DB %utilization, # of scratch
tapes, stgpool %, db and log volumes synched, db cache hit 98%, log %,
disk volumes all online and available, no tapes in error state or specific
ones in read only that should not be, cleaning cart close to no uses

- report of tapes not written to in over x amount of time (we then reclaim
these)

Hello,

When the tsm client talks to the server it uses 1500. Is there a way to tell
the server what port to talk to the client on?

Thanks,

Re: /VAR File System on AIX 4.3.3 and TSM Error

2002-05-30 Thread David Longo

/var on AIX can have a lot of temporary files, print files and mail spool
files etc. A file is there when TSM gets list of files to back up and is gone
when actually tries to backup. I don't worry about. I like to backup up
/var anyhow as there is stuff there worth saving (cron jobs, for instance).

I am getting this error message on my TSM Server and was
not sure if these files are cached and replaced with new
files causing the ANE4005E error below. Also, is there a
specific reason that the /VAR file system should be backed
up on a regular basis. Thanks.

Re: frame relay nodes-- can I avoid another full backup?

2002-05-30 Thread David Longo

Haven't looked at 5.1 yet, I know there is a new command
something like move nodedata. However as you are upgrading
OS and rearranging disks, I would take your last option - Rename
nodes (rename NODE NODE_OLD), then register new node names
and do full backup of new machines.

After comfortable period, you can delete old nodes data.

(Remember to check schedules, associations follow rename node.
Need to delete assoc and associate with new node).

Changing Storage Pools/Management Classes

2002-05-30 Thread Todd Lundstedt

Currently, we backup everything either to DISKPOOL (which migrates to
LTOTAPE), or directly to LTOTAPE. Files (backup/archive client), databases
(TDP for Domino, and TDP for SQL), everything is eventually stored into
LTOTAPE. The databases get backed up FULL every time. The largest
database we have is ~75GB. The TDP SQL databases are in a different set of
management classes from the other files (TDP Domino databases have their
own management class, as well).

Soon, we will be creating an application that will have a 500GB database.
FULL backups for SQL databases will be changing over to FULL with DIFFs
(for the larger databases, FULLs on the smaller ones). I would like to
segregate the SQL databases into their own tape storage pool. There will
be no reclamation on the tapes in this storage pool, and collocation will
be turned on, because I will be doing some striped backups. (I don't see
the sense in reclaiming tapes when the major databases range in size from
10% to 400% of a tape, but give me a reason to consider it, and I will)

What is the best way to handle moving/changing the storage location of my
SQL databases from the LTOTAPE storage pool to the LTOSQLTAPE storage pool
(I just made that name up).

Should I modify the existing management classes to start using the new
storage pool? If so, what happens to the files in the current storage
pool?

Should I create a new management class pointing to the new storage pool and
change the INCLUDE statements to point to the new management class? If so,
what happens to the files in the current storage pool and the current
management class?

Is there another way to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Select node_name as Node Name from Nodes

You may have to add -tab to your dsmadmc command.

Subject: select formatting

The below output is from a simple select statement. I hate to ask this again
but its been a while since I've done it and I forget how to format the
columns. What I need to do is extract the node names from the backup server
so that I can then perform operations on them. How do I increase the width
of the column to get the desired effect? I suppose set sqldisplaymode would
do it but I'm actually running the select query from a perl script via a
dsmadmc command.

i.e.:

@RESULT = `/opt/Tivoli/tsm/client/admin/bin/dsmadmc -id=admin -pa=admin
select node_name from nodes`;

returns the below when what I want is to store the node names in an array

Re: ANR9999D Error message: Do you how to figure out this message?

2002-05-30 Thread Zlatko Krastev

ANRD is generic error message handling unknown situations. Usually
such problems can be resolved only by IBM support due to their rare
occurences. The large output is tracing information to help support and
developers to analyse the root cause.
The only hint I can give you is to perform AUDIT DB but it may show
nothing useful.

Dear All,

Situation we face
I am wondering where I can get more detailed information about ANRD
error message.
Actually we have been suffering from so many problems including robot,
drive problems and so on.
Also we've got many times ANR8300E Changer Failure error msg and then
TSM just died...T_T
But funny thing is there is no tape stuck in the drive even though the
library LCD screen says for example Element 1212(drive12) is obstructed.
Last night we had the same problem again and I tried to update the drive12
onlin=no then all the other drives are working fine no more changer
failure since the last reboot.
So I think this error msg is misled by something else.
Please if you had faced similar situation before please get back to me.

Questions
As you see the log below, I found something going wrong with space
reclamation on c3(copy pool for offsite).
As soon as I did update stg c3 recl=60 from recl=100( basically no space
reclamation), I've got the ANR999D error message.
This error msg just never stopped!!
Scared and put it back. Then I tried it again after set CONTEXTMESSAGING
on to get details.
You can see the red marked detailed information about ANR999D msg below
but simply I don't know what it means.
Can you let me know good reference or any documents?

Thanks,
Meensun from Tokyo

Getting events formatted better????

2002-05-30 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

I have been using a q event * * node=* begindate=today-1 enddate=today
begintime=08:00 endtime=06:30 format=detailed
command for quite a while. I output the info into a web page for
Operations staff to read. I am tired of
having to move the page to the right to see the status. I've got it so
that COMPLETED is green and MISSED is
red and other conditions are blue.

I can use the select node_name from events . for a
different output but I don't like the missing info
from the q events command.

I am looking for a script that rearranges the columns from the q
events command
to put the node name first and the status second and whatever order I
want the rest.

I've tried using awk and while it works I can't get the columns lined up
nice and neat.

Any help out there for this??
