Re: Binding SYSTEM OBJECT

2003-02-26 Thread Karel Bos
The adsm.sys dir contains a copy of your registry. This is not the same as
the files going into the SYSTEM OBJECT filespace. These files are needed to
maintain a consistent system state. Some info from the help files:

Backing up system objects
Certain Windows NT, 2000, and XP system objects can be backed up together or
individually. However, Microsoft recommends all system objects be backed up
together to maintain a consistent system state. The following are valid
system objects:

Active Directory (domain controller only)
Certificate server database
Cluster Database (cluster node only)
COM+ database
Event logs (system, security and application)
Registry
System and boot files
System volume
Removable Storage Management Database (RSM)
Replicated file systems (FRS)
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
To back up system objects using the GUI, select the system objects tree from
the backup window.

On the command line, use the backup systemobject command to back up all
valid system objects. To back up system objects individually, see
corresponding commands in Chapter 10, Using commands.

For Windows 2000, XP: You can exclude system objects from backup processing
using the exclude.systemobject option. See Exclude options for more
information.

About half the machines in our central server domain are small and bound to
a small server management class by an option set. It looks like

0 include ?:* smallserver
1-37 exclude the usual suspects
38 include c:\adsm.sys\...\* smallserver
39 dirmc smallserver.

Sequence #s 0 and 39 do the right thing, but 38 does not, so the SYSTEM
OBJECTs go to the default pool instead.

What have I missed here? The server is 5.1.1.6 running on AIX.

Locate the correct version (and language) msg file and install

2003-02-26 Thread Gerhard Rentschler
Hello,
we have 5.1.6.2 on AIX 4.3.3 since 2 days. We upgraded from 5.1.1.6. I would
like to mention a few points.

I have not seen any problems with the server help menus.

After the upgrade the inittab entry for the ACSLS interface was missing.

There is a slight problem with the formatting of the output of q proc.
Line breaks are missing and the output contains special characters like ~ or
backslash. It is a very minor problem.

The problem with the extraneous system object backup groups is gone. Cleanup
backupgroup and a subsequent expiration reduced the number of files from 1.9
million to 19. However, keep an eye on your recovery log when running
cleanup backupgroups and the first expiration after upgrading.

In my opinion 5.1.6.2 seems to be the stable version we have been waiting
for.

Best regards
Gerhard

A frequently asked question. Start by doing a Query Content to get perspective

I think I can second this. I've been at v5.1.6.2 on our production

My only complaint is the speed of the expiration - it's never fast

MediaW in Summary Table

2003-02-26 Thread Adams, Matt (US - Hermitage)
Hi all,

We are on TSM server version 5.1.6.0 and I have noticed that the stats for
MediaW in the Summary table is incorrect some of the time, but not all of
the time. In doing a LAN-free backup, the total time for the backup was 43
minutes. The summary table showed 2143 secs of mediaw time (35min). If you
back out the media wait time, that makes the backup throughput rate an
astronomical number that I know we are not getting. This issue does not
seem to occur on every backup performed.

Anyone else experienced this??

statistics about active and inactive data

2003-02-26 Thread Tuyl Adrie, A.C. van
Hi,

Is there a safe way of displaying the amount of active data and inactive
data of a node?

In the BACKUPS table the state of an abject is stored, but not the size of

Besides that I don't think a (joined) select on the BACKUPS table is a good
idea considering the amount of data in this table.
Anyone an idea?

Select for daily maintenance

2003-02-26 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM
Hi *SM-ers!
I'm currently using the Q PROC command in my daily maintenance scripts to
determine if the previous task has completed or not. I capture the
returncode and if it's not equal to 0 then no task are running and thus the
next script can be executed.
I'm trying to find a way to make this more specific. For instance, I would
like to see a returncode not equal to zero if reclamation has finished, I
don't care if any other process is still running.
I think it should be possible to do this by using a select statement, but
I'm not much of an SQL wizard.
Could somebody help me out here?
Thank you very much in advance!

Actually, NW cluster support is available with client 5.1.5.0 and higher. I
would advise using 5.1.5.6

There is a Novell TID about an issue with NSS volumes (shared disk) that affects
backups as well.

TO ALL: Please provide as much info as possible when posting about a problem...

2003-02-26 Thread Andrew Raibeck
I've seen some posts recently that look similar to these:

What is wrong this this command?

   somecommand

or

QUERY XYZ produces the output below. Is this a bug?

   someoutput

or

I set up the client scheduler, but it doesn't kick off when it is
supposed to.

The problem with the first example is that the command syntax is shown,
but the poster does not show what output she is receiving, or provide any
more information that would be useful in determining the nature of the
problem.

The problem with the second example is that the output is shown, but the
poster does not mention what specifically about the output she doesn't
like.

The problem with the third example is that the problem description, from a
technical standpoint, is very vague.

When posting questions/problems to the list, it would be helpful to
provide as much information as possible about the nature of your problem.
A short list of items includes:

- The commands being used
- The output from the commands
- Complete version numbers of the relevant components (i.e. 5.1.5.4, not
just 5.1)
- Operating system names/versions for the OSes involved
- Other relevant information
- Your specific questions

The other relevant information can include technical details about the
configuration. For example, if the question is about problems with
include/exclude processing, then include your *complete* options file,
include/exclude file, client options set, and output from QUERY INCLEXCL.
Of course, also include the symptoms of the problem you are seeing,
including sample output from the backup or archive operation, and any
corresponding dsmerror.log entries.

In general, the more detail you provide, the more likely that someone can
provide a quick and relevant response.

Thank you,

AIX Client automatic start for dsmcad

2003-02-26 Thread Anders Ståhlbom
Hi,

Where is the best place for starting dsmcad during boot on AIX 4.3.3?

Like /etc/rc.d/rc.local for Linux

I got some suggestions yesterday but not really described exactly.

I'm not a AIX Guru but I know Linux.

ManagedServices is webclient schedule

dsmcad is in /var/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/

I'm asking for:

1. On AIX is the TSMCAD Daemon the best way to run the Schedule?

2. Name of the scriptfile for start, based on the answer on the first Q.

3. Correct syntax for that entry, based on the answer on the first Q.

Re: [summary] Select statement question...

2003-02-26 Thread Coats, Jack
Thanks, I got the answer. Paul hit it on the head. My summary of clients
is given by the SQL query:

select platform_name as OS, -
  client_os_level as OS_VER, -
  cast( cast(client_version as char(2)) || '.' -
  || cast(client_release as char(2)) || '.' -
  || cast(client_level as char(2)) || '.' -
  || cast(client_sublevel as char(2)) -
as char(15)) as Client, -
  count(*) as Count -
 from nodes -
  group by platform_name, -
client_os_level, client_version, client_release, client_level,
client_sublevel -
  order by OS, OS_VER, Client

My main issue was trying to put the Client aggergate in the order by
clause. Instead, I had to put each of its components in the group by
clause, and then order by clause can contain the name of the casted column
(Client)

library support question

Re: Library Configuration Question

2003-02-26 Thread Roger Deschner
I just upgraded from an ATL P3000 (329 slots) to an ATL P7000 (399
slots) which was on new hardware, and my upgrade path was to do a
database restore. I never had any problem seeing the new slots.

The term stored statically in the database is slippery. Some things
are, and some are not, and some things that appear to be, are
overwritten when you do a restore, but others are not. I'm just not sure
which is which.

For instance, after completing the restore, I had to delete and redefine
all my drives, but not the library itself.

Have I made this perfectly muddy for you?

During library definition a read element status command is sent to the

information stored statically in the database?

The specific case I'm curious about is when slots are added to a library.
Will TSM detect these new slots as part of the initialization or will a
library re-definition be required?

I have seen a case where a simple restart detected the new slots and I have
also seen the case where a re-definition was required.

What is really happening? Clearly this is for the engineers.

Re: Dir, Filespace backup question

2003-02-26 Thread Cook, Dwight E
One thing you have to watch out for is that...
when you do that you alter the keys which TSM uses...
Key fields in various situations are NODE, FILE_SYSTEM (filespace_name),
directory path ie stuff between the mount point where the file resides
(hl_name), FILE (ll_name)
Now you used to have /app/1st72gbarray/somedir/somefile
keys used to be
app
1st72gbarray/somedir
somefile
now if you do what it seems you will do your keys will change as follows...
app/1st72gbarray
somedir
somefile
So in the future you might have to do the following...
If looking for older copies of backups archives use
q backup {/app}/1st72gbarray/somedir/somefile
If looking for newer copies of backups archives use
q backup {/app/1st72gbarray}/somedir/somefile
Use the {} to designate what should constitute the ~file_system~ name

Oh, and I guess since it radically changes the keys, it goes without saying
that it will assume the new names are all new files...

There is the ability to rename your filesystems within TSM but I've never
specifically looked at the results of that action as it relates to the
issues mentioned above...

hope this helps,

Hi TSMers

I have a question for you.

I'm running TSM 4.2.2.12 on a Solaris 2.7 machine. We are about to do some
reconfiguration of the file systems of one of our clients as follows.

At the moment we have one massive /app dir with loads of subdirs for
various applications (5 72GB disks software raided...yuk). What we are
looking at doing is making some of the dir's actual mount points. i.e. the
/app/users/fred would be copied to a new mount point making sure that all
file permissions, access dates etc remain unchanged, and then mount that
new file system as /app/users/fred (same as before).

Will TSM see this as completely new data, regardless of whether or not we
maintain the same dates, time stamp etc. If, so, is there a way round this?

Please feel free to ask for more info If I have been too vague.

Many thanks

Cannot remove tapes from copy storage pool

2003-02-26 Thread David Lin
Hi all

I have 2 tapes in the copy storage pool that I cannot get rid of.
When I try to do a move data command, it says that the tape has no data on

When I try to do a delete volume command, it says that the tape still
contain data.
(What a contradiction!!!)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove these 2 tapes from the copy
storage pool?

Yours sincerely

Well, for that matter, why not just have the client send the processor info

It sends back the OS level. Seems to me the software should collect the

Bruce,

At this point the licensing scheme is sold one way and incorporated into
the TSM Server a second completely different way. One way I thought of
to bring the two licensing schemes would be to have each node registered
with a number of processors entered with it as an option. That
accomplishes that function, now we could kill two birds with one stone
by adding a TDP License option with a flags of DB2, SAP, Oracle,
Sybase, etc so that both the TDP and the node license are associated
with the same nodename. And while were at it, let's make it easier to
store both filesystem and TDP data under the same nodename instead of
creating a second virtual node.

I have 2 tapes in the copy storage pool that I cannot get rid
of. When I try to do a move data command, it says that the
tape has no data on it. When I try to do a delete volume
command, it says that the tape still contain data. (What a
 contradiction!!!)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove these 2
tapes from the copy storage pool?

Run DELETE VOLUME VOLUME_NAME DISCARDDATA=YES.

When you next run your primary pool to copy pool backup, the files you
may delete with the above command will be backed up to your copy pool
again.

Hi, Adrie.

You might try

export node mynode filedata=backupactive preview=yes

You could do the same with filedata=backup, then subtract the two numbers,
and that should be your inactive.

Good luck.

Re: TSM server crashing

You might also use the dsmulog utility to log your server's console output.
That can think of a few situations where the actlog no longer records
entries, so if that happens and then you crash, that console output could be
invaluable. However, I don't know if dsmulog is available on Windows

Re: Dir, Filespace backup question

2003-02-26 Thread Alex Paschal
Using Aristotle's experimental model (pure mental what-if), I've concluded
it might be possible to export the /app filesystem to tape, rename the
filesystem to /app/users/fred, import the filesystem from tape to get your
/app filesystem back. My mental gyrations lead me to believe you would then
have all your {/app}/users/fred backup/archive data in the {/app/users/fred}
backup.

I wonder what would happen for expiration of /app/users/david/* files in the
{/app/users/fred} filespace? Hmm Maybe you could season with a bit of
rebinding? I think this would be a fun experiment if I can find the time.

Many thanks

Gretchen, what is your expiration speed?
We expire over a million objects per hour (AIX 4.3.3, TSM 4.2.3.3).

My only complaint is the speed of the deletion - out of +4 million
examined objects, none is deleted the last 5 days.;-)
See expiration runs, deletion not done I posted last Monday.

So that I can make sure that the number of objects in my disk pool + primary

Whenever I do:

BACKUP STGPOOL DISKPOOL COPYPOOLTAPE

Because when TSM does migration from disk to tape, it does NOT necessariliy
migrate the oldest data first, and you can go a VERY LONG TIME (or forever)
without all the data migrating to your primary tape pool. So you need the
BACKUP STGPOOL DISKPOOL COPYPOOLTAPE to make sure that stuff gets to the

Dear all

I've been running TSM for four years or so. When we use BACKUP STGPOOL to
copy a primary storage pool to a copy storage pool, I have relied on the
fact that a successful completion means I have two copies of all my data.

I've just discovered that a number of my files don't have a second copy.
For a large number of volumes (more than 10 per server) Q CONTENT xx
COPIED=NO comes back details of the files but BACKUP STGPOOL (with or
without PREVIEW=YES) tells me there is no data to be copied.

Some of these files were backed up from the client months (years?) ago.
Some are active, some are inactive.

I discovered this when testing my DR procedures. I updated the status of
all my primary storage pool volumes to be DESTROYED and ran a RESTORE
STGPOOL PREVIEW=YES. I was shocked at the number of 'ANR1256W Volume XX
contains files that could not be restored' messages that resulted.

I've logged a PMR but wondered if anybody else had experienced similar. It
kind of blows a big hole in my DR plans.

For info, we are running TSM Server 4.2.1.15 on Windows.

Re: licensing costs

2003-02-26 Thread Joshua S. Bassi

You got several answers, but I got questions for you.

 1. Is the 3494 shared?
 2. Do you know if the tapes are initialized?

If the 3494 is shared, you can't just do a search=yes because you may very
well get tapes that *shouldn't* belong to ITSM
If the tapes aren't initialized then you can't just do a checkin. You'll
need to do a DSMLABEL or LABEL LIBV

Re: LTO1 and LTO2 in one Library

2003-02-26 Thread Kauffman, Tom
Winfried --

From the README.SRV for the 5.1.6.2 server:

TSM now includes support for the second generation of LTO hardware. This
support
was introduced at 5.1.6.1 and is supported by any level released later;
however,
any attempt to use LTO2 devices on a lower level than 5.1.6.1 is not
supported.
Upgrading from LTO to LTO2 devices:

When migrating from LTO to LTO2 devices, you need to follow one of the set
of
steps below:

  - If you are maintaining both generations simultaneously, LTO gen1 and LTO
gen2, then you need to logically partition your library such that the
drives
of these two generations are disjoint.

  - If you are upgrading all your drives to LTO gen2, then
1. Delete all your old LTO gen1 drive definitions as well as any
paths
associated with these old drive definitions.
2. Define the new LTO2 drives and paths associated with the new
hardware.

NOTE: LTO gen2 drives are backwards read compatible as well as
backwards
write compatible. Therefore, you do NOT need to mark your LTO
gen1
   media as read only.

You are clearly having some problems, either hardware or microcode, if you
are getting this many errors. You will probably continue to get more of
these errors until you pursue what is going on.

That said, we can try to clean up the tape mess.

Let's deal with the destroyed tapes first:

They either got marked destroyed by an administrator, or because someone ran
a RESTORE VOLUME. Do you know which it is? And do you have copy pool tapes
that we can use to rebuild these 2 volumes?

To bind your system objects (Win2K) to a specific management class, the
syntax is:

Include.SystemObject ALL smallserver

You can find this in the Using the Windows Clients manual (for either V4

affect how SYSTEM OBJECTS are stored.

About half the machines in our central server domain are small and bound to
a small server management class by an option set. It looks like

0 include ?:* smallserver
1-37 exclude the usual suspects
38 include c:\adsm.sys\...\* smallserver
39 dirmc smallserver.

Sequence #s 0 and 39 do the right thing, but 38 does not, so the SYSTEM
OBJECTs go to the default pool instead.

What have I missed here? The server is 5.1.1.6 running on AIX.

The tapes are pre-labeled and initialized.

I would advised *always* doing your own media labeling of incoming

2003-02-26 Thread Prather, Wanda
We run AIX 4.3.3, have gone from TSM 3.1 to 3.7 to 4.1 to 4.2.1.5. Etc.

On ADSM 3.1, you needed ACSLS to support some types of devices that ADSM
didn't support native.

And at one time you could put two types of drives in the library if you used
ACSLS, and TSM doesn't support that with native SCSI (and I'm not sure you
can still do this at TSM 5.x, even with ACSLS).

Once we evolved past those 2 requirements, we dropped ACSLS and went to
TSM's native SCSI support.
It's a much simpler configuration and works just dandy if TSM is the only
application using the library.

I just installed the 5.1.5.6 client on 4 new Netware 5 servers. On 3 of
them I'm getting the following error in the dsmerror.log:

02/26/2003 14:07:52 GetHostnameOrNumber(): gethostbyname(): errno = 35.
02/26/2003 14:07:52 TcpOpen: Could not resolve host name.

I get this when I do a load dsmcad it loads the dsmc.nlm.
Any suggestions or idea's?

Re: Netware Client problem

2003-02-26 Thread Matt Zufelt
I haven't seen your exact error message before, but it looks like you server may have
DNS name resolution issues. I would suggest checking three things first: (1) make
sure the server knows it's own hostname properly (check sys:etc\hostname). Also, make
sure that the hostname the server thinks it is using is the same as the hostname
configured in your local DNS.

(2) Make sure sys:etc\hosts is configured properly for your NetWare server. There
should be a line in there similar to:

192.168.1.3 servername.somewhere.comservername

(3) Make sure the server can do DNS lookups outside of TSM. You could try using ping
at the server console to check this (ping your TSM server by name, or a known site on
the Internet that answers pings, such as www.cisco.com). If that doesn't work, check
the file sys:etc\resolv.cfg. It should look something like this:

domain somewhere.com
nameserver 192.168.1.1
nameserver 192.168.1.2

with your domain and nameservers, of course.

Re: ACSLS or Native TSM manager

Would you still need ACSLS for a 9310 PowderHorn with Fiber attached 9940B Tape Drives?

Subject: ACSLS or Native TSM manager

We just bought a used STK L700 with 4 DLT7000 drives. We
have TSM 5.1.5.2 on AIX and I am confused as to why/if I
would need to use ACSLS to manage the library? Does ACSLS
provide any features not available with TSM's native
library manager? We will want to share this L700 with
another TSM server and I can't see why native scsci
library won't be a good choice?

Any advice?

TSM Server upgrade

2003-02-26 Thread Yahya Ilyas
I will appreciate if any one can share his/her experience and advice on TSM
server upgrade from version 4 to version 5.

I am planning to upgrade TSM server from V. 4 R 1 to TSM Server 5.1 on AIX
4.3.3.
Last time when I upgraded TSM server from V3 to V4 I did following:
exported admin, node, policy, server information's
saved volumehistoryfile, deviceconfigfile, dsmserv.opt and
dsmserv.dsk files
After upgrade I imported admin, node, policy and server. Also copied these
saved files back to TSM server directory.

For upgrade to Version 5, do I need to do all these steps and are there any
other things I should take care of.
I will greatly if you can send me detailed information of this upgrade.
Thanks
Yahya

You don't need ACSLS for an L700. I found that I could do everything I
wanted without it (I do have ACSLS managing a 'regular' silo and two
L700s without it). My L700s are dedicated to TSM - if yours are not, you
probably could benefit from ACSLS.

What happens when a backup is interrupted

2003-02-26 Thread Nancy R. Brizuela
Hi All,

Could I have someone confirm my understanding of what happens under
various circumstances when a backup is interrupted? Do I understand
this correctly?

Per the manuals, client sessions are cancelled when the server is
halted. If an operation, such as a backup or archive process is
interrupted when the session is cancelled, the server rolls back the
results of the current transaction.

The start window does not control whether or not a client backup
restarts after an interrupt (caused by the server). It looks to me that
this is controlled by two parameters in the client option file, the
retry period and the maximum command retries. It looks like a backup
would restart where it left off if the interrupt was caused by the
server.

It also appears that there is no restart provision if the interrupt is
caused by the client going down. In that case, the backup must be
restarted. However, if the client went down within the start window, I
think we could assume that the backup would restart, although it would
likely start completely over again.

Thanks!

My TSM clients think they can restore from a disk storage pool LANFREE!!

2003-02-26 Thread David le Blanc
I have an open APAR on this problem, however I thought I'd share it with
the list.

A customer reported the problem described below which seemed to
indicate the TSM CLIENT system attempted to perform a LANFREE
restore of files which were in the TSM Server disk storage pool.

The system has been configured for LAN FREE tape access but was
never configured to use sanergy or any other tool for lan free
disk pool access (devclass=DISK, not sequential FILE).

Tivoli suggested setting 'lan free = no' in the client options
before any attempt to restore, however the real solution would be
to convince the client that the TAPES can be accessed LANFREE but
not the disk pool.

What configuration changes can I make to ensure it does not attempt
to perform LAN FREE restore from a disk storage pool

Please note that is was only after an upgrade from 4.2.0.1 to 4.2.3.3.
There was never any problem restoring data with 4.2.0.1

Cheers.
David
