Re: Need experiences with TSM 5.2.x upgrade on z/OS

2003-11-13 Thread Stumpf, Joachim
Joe,

at the moment we are migrating from 5.1.6.3 to 5.2.1.1 (straight!).
We had a performance issue which you can fix with a ZAP (APAR PQ80211).
If you upgrade without doing the cleanup backupgroups on 5.1.7.3 (or later) first,
the TSM-Server will do it itself after upgradedb. This process cannot be stopped and
used a lot of CPU (before the ZAP).
Now with the ZAP it ran between 30min and 45min. on our 16GB Databases.
The 5.2.1.1 code seems to be stable but we have the garbage char. problem which will
be fixed in I think 5.2.2!

hope this helps,

regards
Joachim Stumpf

Urgent! Need help to get space in TSM-library

2003-11-13 Thread Frank Mueller
I need your help!!! Urgent, I have no space in my second library...

We have 2 TSM-server, both on AIX 4.3.3. The first Server is on TSM V
4.2.2.6 and second Server is on TSM V 4.2.4.0. On both server are librarys
attached.
Three steps to backup the clients.
1. backup the client to SSA-disks on the first server
2. migrate this data to the first library
3. backup stg for copy data from the first library to the second library on
the second TS-server

Now I have a big problem with the space on the second server. I can delete
some data on the first server and run exp inventory and I get more space in
the library. It runs fine. But I get no space on the second server and now
the library is full.

I search in this mailing lists and find some hints for

1. audtitdb fix=yes
2. cleanup backupsgroups

Can this help??

Re: Anyone done BMR on Linux??

2003-11-13 Thread Otto Schakenbos
not so long ago i developed a bmr solution for linux. I did the following
Dow loaded the superrescue cd ( a redhat 7.2 live cd). Then customized
this cd (deinstalled stuff you don't need and install stuff you do need)
In my case i installed the tsm client and webmin. Recompiled the kernel
to include some network drivers/scsi we have in our servers. Then
recompile the cd and burn it. (instructions do come with the cd)
We have already scripts running on the clients which collect system info
sand send this to a central email address. This includes partitioning
information.
When a machine dies (or for testing)
1 - grab another piece of hardware, the more equal the better but it is
ok to have something different in most cases depending on your situation
2 - grab the system info from the to be restored machine
3 - boot the new hardware from the rescue cd
4 - recreate partitions etc
5 - restore your data from tsm (you have the client installed on the
rescue cd) you only have to change the nodename in the dsm.sys file .You
can use the data from the standard backup (no image backup needed)
6 - adjust some stuff in the config files if other hardware (like scsi
to ide )
7 - reinstall lilo or grub (using chroot)
8 - make some dirs (initrd and proc)
9 - reboot
i tested it and it works pretty good for redhat and suse.(on software
and hardware raid) To rebuild a machine it takes approx 30 min human
intervention, the data restore time will vary ofcourse. You will need
good understanding of the linux os. (esp. what it is doing when booting)
have fun

I can write to tape, but since this concerns tsm on the mainframe and the
stk silos are run with tms, I don't think that I can remove one tape from
the test silo arena and have it read in the production tms. The production
tms won't recognize the tape volser and I don't think this will work...

Also, is the data deleted from the original tsm server or is it just a
copy? I don't want to lose important data while trying to do this.

Thanks!

If you're just trying to move some client data from one TSM server to
another, you also have the alternative of just using a tape!

Run EXPORT on the first TSM server, write the data to a tape.
Run IMPORT on the second TSM server, specify the volser of that tape.

That's all there is to it!
It's much faster than using server-to-server communication, because with
server-to-server, you have to transmit the data via TCP-IP.

The only reason you MUST use server-to-server for export/import, is if you
have no compatible media that both servers can read/write.

Subject: export/import

Hello all!

I am just trying to get a better idea of how export/import data between 2
tsm os/390 servers works. I know that in order to do this I will have to
create server to server communication. I will then export the data for
certain nodes onto virtual memory. What virtual memory is used? How does
tsm know where to put this information? When tsm exports data, does it
just make a copy of the information from the originator and then import the
copy onto the new server(location) or does it delete the information off of
the originating server?

Also, do I have to have the exact same management classes defined on the
server that will import the data or can I reassign a new management class
name to the files and directories? If I don't have the same management
class defined will it get the default management class for that policy
domain? Do I have to have the same policy domain and policy set as well?
I want it changed when I move them from test to production, but I wasn't
exactly sure how this would work...

Thanks for any input you might have on this topic!

Re: Urgent! Need help to get space in TSM-library

2003-11-13 Thread Bill Smoldt
Frank,

Presumably, you're first server is writing virtual volumes to the second
server rather than directly to the library? Or is the second library a
shared library? Presumably, you need to free space on the virtual volumes,
not data that was written to the second server? I hope you see why it is
difficult to answer your question because you left out too many details
which could radically alter the answer.

If you're trying to free space in the virtual volumes that the first server
wrote on the second server, you will have to run reclamation on the virtual
volume storage pool on the first server.

You should also have had to run reclamation on your first server in order to
gain free space, but you said you only ran expiration.

What is virtual volume size on the second server?

Windows 2000 Server service setup

2003-11-13 Thread Steve Roder
Hi All,

I have a client running TSM 5.1 on Win2000 where the TSM Server
service got totally messed up. It's a long story how it got that way, but
the jist of it is that it appears that the applicatoin of 5.1.7.0 got
installed on d:\Program files\tivoli\tsm, when the 5.1.0.0 was in fact in
c:\Program files\tivoli\tsm. I think this happened due to using
D:\tsm_images to unpack the .exe, so it installed the code on d:? Anyway,
the dsmsvc.exe in the Service call referenced c:, and that executable no
longer existed. It spit out a message to reinstall the service, first
removing it via remove.exe in the console directory, and then
reinstalling it via install.exe. The remove worked, but the install
fails:

install.exec TSM Server c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\server\dsmsvc.exe admin admin

Install error - Unknown error. RC: 997

Note that the above failed even after we uninstalled the TSM Server code,
and reinstalled 5.1.7.0 and the license files.

The DB appears to be upgraded, and fine, as I can run dsmserv from a cmd
prompt, and bring up the server. It is just that we cannot reinstall the
TSM Server service.

I am also concerned that perhaps the TSM software install is a bit messed
up, perhaps with some bad registry entries pointing at D:?

Any ideas?

Subject:Library sharing from a 5.1 AIX 4.3.3.11 TSM server to a 5.2
   server on AIX 5.1ML4-ANRD smlshare.c

Hello out there-- anyone got any ideas on this one? I've googled (and
searched the APAR db) the smlshare.c and the unknown verbType and come up
with nothing.

I have server-to-server working, and I have set up the 3494 library as
shared on TSM_HQ3 and defined the paths on the library manager as they
would appear to the library client (ie. define path tsm_hq3 aa710
srct=server destt=drive libr=3494b devi=/dev/rmt0 online=yes) and I can do
an mtlib on the client to the defined lmcpd for the library manager.

What am I missing??

TIA

Re: Category for Veritas tapes

2003-11-13 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU
Are you running CA-1 on the MVS z/OS !

I usually have this scenario when I physically load new tapes but haven't
labeled/checked-in the tape to the TSM AIX server.

It will keep doing this until they are owned by the AIX system.

Is this a new non-mainframe TSM server you are trying to setup that will
share a library/ATL ?

Need more information !

Subject:Category for Veritas tapes

I'm trying to define a new category on my TSM Server/Library Manager.

The tapes are used for Veritas and when checked in, still remain in FF00
status. This generates a lot of messages on the mainframe console as it
thinks the tapes need to be checked in.

Does anyone have a command I can use to create a category to move my
tapes into to stop the generated message on the mainframe console?

Thanks,

We just use host scripts, and call dsmadmc for the TSM commands from within
the script.

- perl scripts from Windows (free and harmless to install)

- perl or Kornshell from AIX.

Try:

You can even add a WHERE clause to further refine the type of sessions

Hello,
The TDP for Oracle V5.2 (UNIX) manual suggests using the TDPO_FS option to assign a

What is the advantage of doing this?

Do users follow this suggestion, or do you let them default to adsmorc?

Re: Copystoragepool on different server - recommended size for Est/Max Capacity (MB)

2003-11-13 Thread Deon George
Bernd,

I dont think it really matters - although I would like to be set straight
if thats not true.

When you set MAXCAP, then the virtual volumes will be created to this
maximum size - when the volume gets to this size, a new virtual volume
will be defined.

When talking to the 2nd tsm server and the first tsm server runs out of
data to send to it (because its already completed) or there is break in
communication, then the virtual volume will be closed and probably smaller
than MAXCAP - it'll never be reopened and appended to. So dont be
surprised if you see some volumes that are 0.1 MB in size.

Now, smaller values may be good for reclamation reasons, but may result in
many volumes being created.

secondary TSM Server with a copy storage pool DLT7000 Tapes.

What is the recommmended value for Est/Max Capacity (MB): for the
devclass for the copy storage pool defined on the primary TSM Server?

Both TSM Server are version 5.2.0.0 running on Solaris 5.8.

Brian,

Q VOL will show you tapes that are in USE - ie: NOT scratch.

Q LIBV will show you tapes in your library that are SCRATCH and will be
used when TSM asks for a scratch tape.

The pile of tapes on your table next to the TSM server (that dont show up
Q VOL) are your scratch tapes that are not in the library ;-)

I have 2 mgmtclass named by NEW_MC and NEWORADB using
NEW_TAPEPOOL as migration destination. I can find out all the tape
list from doing a query vol |grep NEW like this:

 832AAB NEW_TAPEPO- LTODEV_CL- 105,867.
 2 83.8
   Full
 846AAB NEW_TAPEPO- LTODEV_CL- 101,636.
 0 100.0

Now, how can I figure which tape I'd be able to re-call as

2003-11-13 Thread Coats, Jack
Within a TSM script, nope, now what you do.

To effectively do this, you can schedule an external script that can have
some
branching/comparison/looping intelligence added, and have this script run
TSM command line commands.

I fought with this for quite a while. But I am happy to be told I am all
wet!

Re: Library sharing from a 5.1 AIX 4.3.3.11 TSM server to a 5.2 server on AIX 5.1ML4-ANR9999D smlshare.c

2003-11-13 Thread Rejean Larivee
Hello,
since you specify that you do library sharing between a TSM 5.1 server and
a TSM 5.2 server then this is a problem. As the TSM 5.2 server readme says
:

* Library Sharing and LAN-Free Upgrade Considerations
*

Compatibility
-
Version 5.2 and above of the Server and Storage Agent are not backwards
compatible with version 5.1 and below of the Server and Storage Agent when
in a
Library Sharing or LAN-Free environment. All Servers and Storage Agents in
a
Library Sharing or LAN-Free environment must be upgraded to 5.2 in order to
function properly.

So, in other words, you must upgrade the TSM 5.1 server to TSM 5.2 so that
both library client and library manager are at TSM 5.2.
Later,

Re: TDP for Oracle filespace questions

2003-11-13 Thread Bill Smoldt
Dale,

Using a different TDPO_FS option allows a better granularity of control.

If your databases are static and never going to change configuration, it may
be less important - I'm not sure. But if you ever delete a database or move
it to another Oracle server, the seperate filespace name allows to you
manipulate within TSM more easily.

As a practice, I give each significant database it's own tdpo.opt file with
it's own TDPO_FS name.

Hello,
The TDP for Oracle V5.2 (UNIX) manual suggests using the TDPO_FS option to
assign a different filespace name to each database when you have several
databases on the same server.

What is the advantage of doing this?

Do users follow this suggestion, or do you let them default to adsmorc?

DB2 backups with multiple DB's on one host

2003-11-13 Thread French, Michael
I have a customer who has two DB2 databases on one server and I need to back
them up with TSM. Is it possible to do this with two separate node names to keep them
apart? If so, how would I do this? Since you have to define 3 environment variables
specific to DB2 for TSM and one of them points to the dsm.opt file, can I specify two
different node entries inside of the opt file? Would it look something like this:

SERVERNAME TSM1
COMMMEHOD tcpip
TCPBUFFSIZE 512
TCPWINDOWSIZE 128
TCPNODELAY yes
TCPSERVERADDRESS 10.82.96.21
NODENAME TIVANAI
PASSWORDACCESS generate

SERVERNAME TSM1
COMMMEHOD tcpip
TCPBUFFSIZE 512
TCPWINDOWSIZE 128
TCPNODELAY yes
TCPSERVERADDRESS 10.82.96.21
NODENAME TIVASSI
PASSWORDACCESS generate

If I do this, how do I specify inside of DB2 which node to use? I know that
there is a parameter called TSM_NODENAME that is set inside DB2, but I don't know how
to generate the encrypted password since it only grabs the first entry out of the opt
file.

...can I cause TSM to use mulitple drives for a direct-to-tape backup/archive?

Fine-grained Collocation choice and MAXNUMMP are the key factors within a
session; and multiple parallel sessions going after subdivisions of file
systems also help (again, watch collocation, to avoid waiting on a single
tape in use by another session).
The Technical Guide redbooks nicely explain the various multi-session

Paul,

I do daily incrementals on my servers. I have not restored a DC yet, but I have
successfully restored non-DC server's System Objects files successfully. Only real
issue would be to do an authoritative AD restore, where you are exclusively
overwriting AD database. Other than that the regular AD restore should be easy, since
other DCs in your domain will update the restored DC's db via replication after
restore.

Check out section 6.2.4 of Redbook sg246141.pdf. It talks specifically about what you
want to do.

I will be conducting an AD restore before the end of this year as a test. I will share
my experience then.

2003-11-13 Thread Khan, Khalid B.
Guillaume,

It is very important that you start and enter the password for one server only among
the cluster nodes. This will write the password to its registry. Later when you fail
over this node via the NT Cluster Administrator the registry password will be entered
on the additional node(s). Otherwise there will be different registry passwords on
each node(s) and the backups will fail.
