NetWare 6.5 Cluster with memory leak

2004-08-12 Thread Hougaard.Flemming FHG
Hi All ;o)

I've got an consitent problem with TSM and NetWare 6.5 Cluster enviroments! At several
customers sites, I've noticed that they are forced to restart the clusternode's within
14 - 30 days (depending on the amount of RAM) - The funny thing is, that it don't seem
to be the backup modules there are having this defect due to the fact that a similarly
machine without cluster just keeps on running...

So what are we talking about...
 - NetWare 6.5 Cluster - SP1
 - TSM Client 5.2.2.3
 - TSA5UP13 14

Any ideas

Re: TSM 5.2.3.1 SMUTIL Problem

2004-08-12 Thread Weichler, Stefan
Hello,

we had to update to 5.2.x.x because we needed the 3592 support.
The 5.1.8.0 we had before was the most stable version we had.

I opend a PMR but IBM haven`t answered yet.

We also have another two problems.

---1st Problem---
On some clients (AIX, Win, ...) we have following messages in the actlog:

2004-08-11 12:06:07 ANR0423W Session 7633 for administrator Pé ( ) refused -
administrator name not registered. (SESSION: 7633)

I didn`t open a PMR yet.
On two clients we generate the client password new.
Since this time we didn`t see the problem on this clients again.
But generate new passwords for about 400 clients is a lot of work
---1st Problem---

The another problem is a TDP problem with oracle.

Stefan Weichler

I am in the processes of upgrading to that release on z/OS 1.4. What
has IBM said about this? I would report it as a problem ASAP. I am on
5.1.8.1. What release were you at that didn't have it? I have to get

Re: Relationship between primary and copy pool

2004-08-12 Thread Stapleton, Mark
That's one of the shining moments of TSM. You don't need to check in
copy pool tapes in order to reclaim them. Just set your reclamation
level for the pool, and TSM will reclaim them by using the copies of
files existing in the primary tape pool.

Re: Simultaneous writes to primary and copy stgpools

2004-08-12 Thread Cory Heikel
A real easy way to do this is to run a backup against the storage pool.
This is how I found that I had accidently turned on silultaneous writes.
The daily backup of the stgpool was running, but not moving any data.

check for maximum scratch tapes in copy pool and increase if require

storage agent device support?

2004-08-12 Thread Joni Moyer
Hey!

We are going to install the storage agent onto our solaris and AIX servers
and it states that we should install the SCSI device support TICsm Sdev,
but we have already installed the IBM device drivers (ATape and IBMtape).
Do we have to install Tivoli's device support code? My thoughts are that
it isn't needed with our configuration. (We have LTO2 drives in an STK
SL8500 library) Also, does the regular TSM client and the Storage agent
have to be at the same level? Thank you!

Hi Joni

If you are using IBM LTO2 drives, only the Atape driver or its Solaris
equivalent have to be installed. As for the Version levels for server and
storage agent, checkout the 5.2.3.0 readme file, there has been some
improvement as to what is supported.

Missed schedule ?

Hi Everybody,

I've set myself up in Tivoli to be sent the summary report of the previous
night's backup. When I checked the mail, it informed me that I had missed 5
schedules for 5 different servers, each one an incremental backup. However,
when I view the dsmsched.log, I see that the backup went through. what does
Missed mean ? The dsmcad process was running on all 5 Missed servers so
I'm not sure what this means. I'm running TSM 5.2.2 on AIX 5.2 and backuping

You should upgrade the TSM client, as well. I had a variety of issues and
then upgraded to the 5.2.2.9 level. There are a few entries in the README
for 5.2.2.9 that talks about memory leaks and such !

5.2.3.0 is the latest level !

Re: Missed schedule ?

2004-08-12 Thread David Longo
Missed means the schedule did not run or even start. Mostly the cause
at my site is the the scheduler or dsmcad was not running to accept
contact from TSM server. Check carefully what schedule was missed
and what you got a summary report from saying o.k.

Do you have multiple schedules for some servers?
Do you have multiple clients using same schedule?

Re: Missed schedule ?

But according to my origianl post, the tail of the dsmsched.log shows as the

Missed means the schedule did not run or even start. Mostly the cause
at my site is the the scheduler or dsmcad was not running to accept
contact from TSM server. Check carefully what schedule was missed
and what you got a summary report from saying o.k.

Do you have multiple schedules for some servers?
Do you have multiple clients using same schedule?

Hi Everybody,

I've set myself up in Tivoli to be sent the summary report of the previous
night's backup. When I checked the mail, it informed me that I had missed 5
schedules for 5 different servers, each one an incremental backup. However,
when I view the dsmsched.log, I see that the backup went through. what does
Missed mean ? The dsmcad process was running on all 5 Missed servers so
I'm not sure what this means. I'm running TSM 5.2.2 on AIX 5.2 and backuping
up AIX 4.3.3,5.1 and 5.2 servers nightly at 8:00 PM.

This seemed very usefull, but I don't find all backup clients in this

client machines show in the entity field.

Any reason for this?

See innumerable past postings about the Summary Table and reliability.
The missing clients are probably 5.1, which had problems in this area.
The Events table and TSM accounting data have proved more reliable over time.

We upgraded our TSM server to 5.2.3.0 (under AIX5.2 build 2 fix 6). Could

Files Previously Excluded: Rebound or New?

2004-08-12 Thread Rob Hefty
Hello all,

How does TSM handle files that were excluded but now are being backed
up? Does it statistically consider these files to be re-bound or just
new? I would guess it would see them as new, but I have seen in some
cases the re-bound file counts spike and level off on some servers that
we recently did this to. Just curious.

Thanks,

Solution for Licensing Issue

2004-08-12 Thread Jason Specland
While moving our TSM setup to a new server, I was having trouble with
the license installation. I'd sworn I'd installed all of the proper
license packages, but I still got the expiring evaluation licenses on
the server.
The problem was that the new server was running AIX 5.2, and I'd
installed *both* tivoli.tsm.license.rte *and*
tivoli.tsm.license.aix5.rte64.
I removed license.rte, license.aix5.rte64, and license.cert. I then
reinstalled license.aix5.rte64 and license.cert and all was well.
I mention it here because I Googled the problem, and saw the question
on the list, but not an answer.

Retries for changed files restart almost immediately. The probable
reason yours is taking so long is that the file is quite large, and it
takes thirty minutes to back up the individual file.

If the file(s) in question is not large, then you may have connectivity
issues or network speed/duplex setting issues.

Mark,

The schedule looks good; however ,I believe that each object should be
surrounded by similar to below. Yes, you will need to specify
filespaces.
Also you should add -subdir=yes and also you can list a maximum of 20
objects.I see you have more than 20 filespaces, so if you are going to
take this route 2 separate schedules are required, 20,2 (objects).
Based on my experience, I will say that running selective backup is not fun
an incremental.

 Objects: / /usr/ /var/ /tmp/ /home/ /usr/local/ /opt/

Select statement help.

2004-08-12 Thread Ben Bullock
Ok, this should be simple, but it's driving me nuts.

I have 2 simple select statements that I'm trying to combine

Here are the 2 scripts and their output:

tsm: TSMSERV1Aselect STGPOOL_NAME, MAXSCRATCH from stgpools where
DEVCLASS like '3590DEV'

STGPOOL_NAMEMAXSCRATCH
-- ---
A_COPYPOOL 200
A_TAPEPOOL 500
COL_FS_TAPEPOOL500
COPYPOOL 1000
DB_TAPEPOOL 1000
I_TAPEPOOL 500

tsm: TSMSERV1Aselect STGPOOL_NAME, (count(VOLUME_NAME))as # of tapes
from volumes where DEVCLASS_NAME like '3590DEV' group by STGPOOL_NAME

STGPOOL_NAME# of tapes
-- ---
A_COPYPOOL 7
A_TAPEPOOL 9
COL_FS_TAPEPOOL222
COPYPOOL 401
DB_TAPEPOOL262
I_TAPEPOOL 106

I would simply like to combine them into 1 script so that it is
easier to compare the Maxscratch value with the actual number of tapes
being used.

Trying various things like:

select vo.STGPOOL_NAME, st.STGPOOL_NAME,
(count(vo.VOLUME_NAME))as # of tapes, st.MAXSCRATCH from volumes vo,
stgpools st where vo.DEVCLASS_NAME like '3590DEV' and
vo.STGPOOL_NAME=st.STGPOOL_NAME group by vo.STGPOOL_NAME

But it's not working... any help?

Thanks,

Not sure if this is the best SQL way to deal with it but it makes the group
by happy and seems to work:

select max(st.STGPOOL_NAME) as STGPOOL, max(st.maxscratch) as
MAXSCRATCH, (count(vo.VOLUME_NAME))as # of tapes from volumes vo,
stgpools st where vo.DEVCLASS_NAME like 'LTO%' and
vo.STGPOOL_NAME=st.STGPOOL_NAME group by vo.STGPOOL_NAME

Subject: Select statement help.

Ok, this should be simple, but it's driving me nuts.

I have 2 simple select statements that I'm trying to combine
into 1 but it's not working.

Here are the 2 scripts and their output:

tsm: TSMSERV1Aselect STGPOOL_NAME, MAXSCRATCH from stgpools where
DEVCLASS like '3590DEV'

STGPOOL_NAMEMAXSCRATCH
-- ---
A_COPYPOOL 200
A_TAPEPOOL 500
COL_FS_TAPEPOOL500
COPYPOOL 1000
DB_TAPEPOOL 1000
I_TAPEPOOL 500

tsm: TSMSERV1Aselect STGPOOL_NAME, (count(VOLUME_NAME))as # of tapes
from volumes where DEVCLASS_NAME like '3590DEV' group by STGPOOL_NAME

STGPOOL_NAME# of tapes
-- ---
A_COPYPOOL 7
A_TAPEPOOL 9
COL_FS_TAPEPOOL222
COPYPOOL 401
DB_TAPEPOOL262
I_TAPEPOOL 106

I would simply like to combine them into 1 script so that it is
easier to compare the Maxscratch value with the actual number of tapes
being used.

Trying various things like:

select vo.STGPOOL_NAME, st.STGPOOL_NAME,
(count(vo.VOLUME_NAME))as # of tapes, st.MAXSCRATCH from volumes vo,
stgpools st where vo.DEVCLASS_NAME like '3590DEV' and
vo.STGPOOL_NAME=st.STGPOOL_NAME group by vo.STGPOOL_NAME

But it's not working... any help?

Thanks,
Ben

ANR6913W - no volumes with backup data exist in copy storage pool

2004-08-12 Thread T. Lists
Hey all,

Every day when I run DR prepare, I've been getting
this warning message for one of my copy storage pools:

ANR6913W PREPARE: No volumes with backup data exist in
copy storage pool COPY_POOL_2.

I've looked up the verbage on the warning, and it
says:

ANR6913W Command: No volumes with backup data exist in
copy storage pool storage pool name.
Explanation: A copy storage pool does not contain any
volumes with usable data.
System Action: Stanzas in the recovery plan do not
include recovery information for any volumes in the
storage pool.
User Response: Determine why this storage pool has no
volumes with usable data.

So, I search the copy pool and it does contain
volumes, and they do have something on them. When I
look at the DR plan, these volumes do show up in the
RECOVERY.VOLUMES.REQUIRED section.

So, I'm stumped. What does this mean? I have other
copy storage pools, but this one is the only one that
seems to generate the message. What am I not seeing?

Thanks,
T.

Have you run SET DRMCOPYSTGPOOL to the name(s) of your copy pools? You
can check this by running QUERY DRMSTATUS and seeing if your copy pools
appear in the Copy Storage Pools line.

TSM does not automatically know that a given copy pool will be used for
DR purposes. You must tell it to do so.

OT: How to prune all those other Win log files?

2004-08-12 Thread T. Lists
This is a Windows question, not a TSM question ...

How can you prune a log file (not dsmsched.log or
dsmerror.log) to keep it to a manageable size? We've
got a lot of other log files generated by the TDP
software on the clients, and they are growing quite
large.

Were this unix, I'd just tail out the last 100 or so
lines of the file and save that. How can you
accomplish something similar with Windows/MSDos?

Multiple nodes in dsm.opt (or dsm.sys).

On AIX, how do I setup the baclient to recognize more than one node name,
so I can start multiple dsmc sched processes; one for the local drives,
and one for each shared resource group (I have made this work on Windows
boxes, but this is the first time I have had to do this on AIX). I had
intended to keep the dsm.opt, dsm.sys, schedule logs, inclexcl list, and
error logs for the local filesystems in /usr/tivoli/tsm, and the dsm.opt,

I need to be able to have different inclexcl lists for each nodename to
ensure things get backed up to the correct nodename.

Tivoli locking up a Win2k system?

2004-08-12 Thread Chris Hund
Hi all,

Has anyone ever come across an issue where the Tivoli client locks up a Win2k system?
This is happening fairly regularly with one of the Win2k boxes in our environment.

Here are a few small excerpts from the dsmsched.log file during the times the system
locks up:

---

07/22/2004 07:06:58 Normal File-- 259,384
\\harr-facet-app\c$\WINNT\Fonts\micross.ttf

07/25/2004 02:56:02 Directory-- 0 \\harr-facet-app\c$\Program
Files\TriZetto\Facets\311\Customer\Output\Backup-ELIG\ERISCO_8920\log

07/26/2004 07:09:48 Normal File--13,072

\\harr-facet-app\c$\WINNT\system32\dfssetup.dll [Sent]
08/12/2004 17:38:34 Querying server for next scheduled event.

---

Those excerpts from the dsmsched.log file come from four different days ... four
different days where the system locked up during a backup. As you can see, there's
nothing consistent about where or when the backup is when the system locks up (which
is why I'm leaning towards thinking this isn't really a TSM problem).

I've talked to IBM Tivoli support. They didn't know what the problem was. I'm hoping
someone here has come across this before.

Many thanks,
