Netbackup from Symantec would be TSM's major competitor. You could also look
at CommVault.

Subject: alternatives to TSM due to license costs

Hello all,

I have been tasked with looking at alternatives to TSM due to recent Audit from
IBM and the amount of money we just shelled out for the TSM License. I am sure
most of you have pertaken to this wonderful experience. I don't really want to
move away from TSM, but have to provide alternatives to management. Could
anyone direct me to where I can begin my search. I have only used TSM my
entire time here. What is the industry leader? Any info or documents or links
doing a comparison would be helpful. Also, is the license structure the same
for other environments as well or is IBM way out of line? I am going to start
with EMC's Avamar/Networker.

Thanks much,
Bryan

Hi,

We are currently running TSM version 5.3.2 and using a 3584 library.

We have a script that runs daily to eject our offsite volumes to the IO
Station, however at times it fails to run correctly because all drives
are busy. However when performing a q mount we can see that some of the
volumes are no longer been used and are sitting idle.

Does anyone know how to change the default idle time which appears to be
60 minutes before the volume is dismounted?

Many thanks.

I am still working understanding why my TSM DB continues to grow and
think I may have come upon something. I have many retention policies in
the management class for all my file servers. The goal was to keep most
data for only 90 days after it was deleted and to keep 90 versions if it
was a file that would be updated daily.
Incremental backups are run nightly. TSM is AIX 5.3 and TSM 4.2.7. The
file servers are mostly W2K with backup-restore client 5.1.x - 5.3.x.

My expiration runs successfully daily but I believe what is happening is
the majority of data being expired are the files that are overwritten
daily. It looks to me like the files that someone overwrites once or
twice lives out in TSM forever, certainly beyond the 90 days I was
expecting it to be there.

Here are my management classes. Is the unlimited retain extra
versions overriding my 90 days in the primary management class ?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ralph

The default management class is defined as:

versions data exist: unlimited
versions data deleted: 9
retain extra versions: 9
retain only version: 9

The primary management class used (95% of all data)

versions data exist: unlimited
versions data deleted: 90
retain extra versions: 90
retain only version: 90

The 2 long retention management classes are:

versions data exist: unlimited
versions data deleted: 366
retain extra versions: 366
retain only version: 366

Hey guys, quick question.

We recently upgraded to an IBM3584 library from an older 3494. We now
have to manually interact with the library for tape check in or outs.
When our DR media is created we have to 'q request' and then 'rep #' of
the request for each tape. This obviously is a pain since we have to
reply for every tape that is moved in or out. I was curious if you guys
had a script that could automatically reply to all open requests
perhaps? We were told upgrading to
5.3 would fix it but I'm curious if there's a way to do it without the
upgrade. If you guys can think of anything let me know :)

Re: TSM 5.2x IBM 3584 Library

You can turn on Virtual IO from the web console which will place all
tapes placed in the IO door into the library. This worked great except
then we search=yes option did not work.

We use scripts to checkin and eject drmedia and turned off Virtual IO.
The scripts also automatically replies.

This has worked great for the last year.

TSM 5.3 Server I understand, removes the REPLY altogether.

If that's true I wish someone would post how that works because I still
have to reply. For checkouts the process continues after the I/O port is
emptied.
For checkin we have to reply. I hear there is a feature you can add to
the library that will take care of emptying the door automatically but
don't know how that would or would not affect the reply feature.

Re: Install 3584 library

2005-12-01 Thread Barnes, Kenny
Shouldn't have to define serial number. This is picked automatically after you
define a path to one or more of control paths in a fabric environment (if
used). For UNIX control paths are defined as 2smc along with 2st for example.

(Solaris) DEFINE LIBRARY 3584LIB1 LIBTYPE=SCSI SHARED=YES Serial=(picked up
automatically and added)
(Solaris) DEFINE PATH WSALEM2 3584LIB1 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=LIBRARY
DEVICE=/dev/rmt/2smc ONLINE=YES

Or if you really want to get the serial number, use the touch screen on the
front of the library or use IP address if already assigned after plugging it
into a browser.

Not sure about Windows configuration, but on Solaris I have path defined to a
drive for library communication and then one for each drive configuration.
The one for the library configuration will used one of the drives defined as
the Control Path.

DEFINE PATH WSALEM2 3584LIB1 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=LIBRARY
DEVICE=/dev/rmt/2sm
c ONLINE=YES
DEFINE PATH WSALEM2 RMT1 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=DRIVE LIBRARY=3584LIB1
DEVICE=/
dev/rmt/1st ONLINE=YES

I am not familiar with LTO drives, but you should be able to find information
from the driver info.

Re: Which Tape Technology?

2005-09-22 Thread Barnes, Kenny
We switched from 8-3590E1A drives and the 3494 librar to 8-3592 drives
and a 3584 library and trimmed 6 hrs off backup times. We backup 1.3 tb
data per night with 90% going to disk pools and then off to tape. We
are also essentially getting the work done using four of the drives.

Infrastructure is all 2gb fibre with tape drives connected to 2-9216
cisco's with four drives each.

Subject: Which Tape Technology?

Hi Everyone,

Currently our tape environment consists of IBM 3494 libraries with 3590H
(60gb) drives. It's possible that we may need to greatly expand our
environment with some new libraries and drives. This has brought up a
discussion about what tape technology we would use. Our environment
consists of a mix of large file backups (Oracle databases), small file
backups (Netware servers) and lots of stuff in between. If we have to
do this, I really can't see purchasing more 3590H drives with cartridges
that are only 60gb. I would think we would want to go to the newest
3592 drives or LTO2/LTO3.

What are your thoughts/comments/experiences with . . . . .

1) Given our mix of large and small file backups, would LTO tape drives
work as well as our current 3590's?
2) Does anyone have any experience using IBMs newest 3592 tape drives?
3) If LTO, is LTO3 the way to go, or stick with older LTO2?
4) Or, should we stick with 3590 drives?

With any of the new tape drives, I'm concerned with throughput issues.
The newest drives (3592 and LTO3) are so fast that I wonder if it
becomes a problem keeping data streaming to them. The capacity is
great, but if I can't keep them spinning I wonder if the new drives
could cause more problems than they solve.

Of course, another option would be a VTL or just local DISK on the TSM
server. We've done some initial pricing of some configurations (tape
libraries/drives/tapes, disk, and vtl) and so far tape is the least
expensive.

Just looking for others experiences with this kind of decision . . . .

Thanks!

Rick

Re: EMC CELERRA backup options - need feedback

2005-09-08 Thread Barnes, Kenny
We have about 3tb on Celerra and backed up using CIFS shared out to two

than I would like, but does give granularity to restore which was a

Subject: EMC CELERRA backup options - need feedback

I am looking for information/guidance/suggestions/sanity-checks on my
current project involving backing up an EMC CELERRA NAS.

Originally, I was told to approach this as an NDMP backup. The more we
look at the drawbacks/limitation of TSM NDMP backups vs what we need to
be able to do with the backups, we are looking at alternative methods
for backups.

Our scenario for the NAS is going to be like this:
1. 300GB to start - up to 3TB.
2. Multiple different clients, both real servers (Windows and *NIX) and
virtual server connections 3. Lots of workstations connecting to the
NAS via AD group policies/virtual server mountpoints to redirect their
My Documents to the NAS.

We need granularity of control over who can restore what from the TSM
backups. The NDMP method doesn't seem to be able to handle this.
We need to perform offsite backup copies (i.e. DR, audit requirements)
which the NDMP method makes painful (snapshots..backing up twice).

So, how do you backup your CELERRA ?

that are not in the drmedia table. I noticed the problem when looking
through last night's dr recovery plan. Server is 5.1.9 running on aix
5.1.

All of these volumes show up in the copystgpool.volumes.destroyed macro.

None of them show up in a q drm. (source=none, dbb, or dbs)

Vohistory shows them in a variety of states: stgnew, stgdelete, and
backupfull.

Q cont shows what appears to be valid data on the volumes.

All of these volumes have been written to within the last week.

Question:

Any ideas as to how I could have gotten into this mess and/or how I can
get out of it?

thanks,

I am having problems with using differnt MC in same policy domain. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Default MC sends data directly to disk.
TDP_EXCH MC sends data directly to tape
Legal MC sends data directly to disks

Data directed to MC's using clopsets using

include *:\...\* tdp_exch

Problem is files go directly to disk and directory names go directly to
tape. I want all to go directly to disk for MC legal.

Re: Encryption Confirmation

2005-06-27 Thread Barnes, Kenny
I would be interested as well in a definitive answer. I was told by IBM
that while doing a restore to another client and challenged for the
encryption password, was confirmation. In testing, if I deleted the
encrypt key from the registry of a Windows 2000 client, I was also
challenged. Which is confusing, since doc's I read stated that if the
key were lost, you could not restore the data?

Penny for your thoughts?

Other than blind faith in the fact that you have the include/exclude

ANR1134W.

How do I make more mount points available?

I updated a the hi/lo threshold on a storage pool to 0/0 to force a
migration.

I received the following warning message. ANR1134W.

Here is the resolution from the messages guide:

ANR1134W Migration terminated for storage pool storage pool name -
insufficient number of mount points available for removable media.
Explanation: During migration for the indicated storage pool the server
could not allocate sufficient mount points in the next storage pool.
System Action: Migration stops. The server waits for the retry period to
expire and then tries the migration again.

User Response: If necessary, make more mount points available.

Can someone give me a little insight on resolving this warning? How do
I make more mount points available?

DR Plannning

2005-03-22 Thread Barnes, Kenny
We are currently looking to bring up a second location which will be
running TSM with it's own library. I plan to partition the library and
have tapes shipped there instead of current off-site vendor. I would
also like to have a stand-by TSM server in the second location along
with the database and logs for the primary location ftp'd daily (or use
virtual volumes) and loaded using scripting to restore db daily. Anyone
doing anything close to this? Particually interested in how scripting
is setup?

TSM 5.2

Re: tape use question

2005-02-17 Thread Barnes, Kenny
You would have to evaluate all policies concerning tape usage:
Collocation?
How many different copypools?
Retention?
Maxscratch numbers?

If you are having a shortage of tapes, you cannot slow down reclaim and
make sure expiration finishes.

Just a quick question to the experienced TSmers out there

Does anybody have any idea or suggestions on how we can slow down our
tape usage.
We are up to 70 tapes going out the door each day and its growing more
by the month.
We have 6 ,,3594 tape libraries , about 60 win NT servers 12 AIX boxes
not including a SP maxed out.
We find our self constantly running vault retrieve since the tape
shortage is getting worse by the day.
Any suggestions would help .

Re: How Many Backup Administrators to Data Backed Up?

I don't know of a exact number, but maybe this will help.

We recently engaged IBM and other hardware vendors to look at upgrading
our environment. We or should I say I, manage 120tb of TSM data in
total storage with a database size of 70 gb. Recommendation was 1.5
admins. One server and one library.

Re: Password corruption in Windows clustered TSM

Another tip. Run the clustered TSM scheduler service using a service
account from both nodes of the cluster. I had a terrible time keeping
passwords in sync until doing this. We have ran cluster now for over a

Hi,

You need to delete the key under:

Hkey_localmachine\software\ibm\adsm\currentversion\backupclient\nodes\%n
odename%\%servername%\password

This is the encrypted password. I had untold amounts of problems with
this in clusters. Our setup for clusters now involves setting the
password timeout for those nodes to 0.

When a cluster does not fail over nicely, the technique for registry
replication in the generic service under cluster administrator does not
work and the node usually ended up using an old password. I have seen
the password just get corrupted to.

Re: TDP for Exchange

2004-12-10 Thread Barnes, Kenny
We have been using TDP for Exchange successfully for over a year now,
but not running clusters. We only have the registered node name in the
opt file, which I believe does not set the Exchange name. From
Scheduling we call excfull.cmd (comes with install), on the local host
that defines and interacts with Exchange by running the TDP client.

Hope this helps.

The tdpexc.log shows the following line:

TDP uses the nodename parameter to set the Exchange Server name, right?

The CDL software CD comes with a quick start guid that in 10 pages and 5
or so easy steps tells you how to create virtual libraries, drives and
tapes. Part of those steps is tying the virtual library and drives to
an HBA on a host (TSM Server). Once that is done your TSM server will
see the library, drives and tapes that you are virtualizaing as a real
library, drives and tapes. So from the TSM perspective you configure
things just as if they were real.

We set up 4 virtual STK L700's with 20 drives each on our CDL. On the
TSM server the adsmscsi driver is controlling the library. We installed
the latest Native IBM LTO drivers for the drives. We configured
everything in TSM just as if it were a real library right down to
running the label libv command.

You can't exactly do that, but you don't really have to.
If you do:

backup stgpool correctonsitepool correctoffsitecopypool

TSM will copy the data for that node to the desired offsite copy pool,
because TSM is happy to put a node's data in multiple copy pools.

Then you are covered for DR of that client, which is, after all, the
highest
priority.

I don't know any way to get rid of the stuff that is already in the
wrong
copy pool except to:

1) bring back the tapes and mark them readonly
2) MOVE NODEDATA to force TSM to put the data for that node on a new
copy
pool tape
3) delete the new copy pool tape with discarddata=yes

Unless you are talking about a client with HUGE amounts of data, it's
not
worth your time to bother with the delete.

From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager on behalf of Barnes, Kenny
I currently had errors during reclaim for off-site copypool volumes
asking for files that cannot be found in on-site tape_pool volumes.
While searching for volumes with status of unavailable or destroyed, I
was able to find the volume. This posed the question of, if I had not
found tapes off-line, could I have determined what tape should have
contained the files using the file name? The errors in the actlog did
not specify the volume it was looking for.

Not directly (at the file level anyway). However, what you could do is
run

select distinct volume_name from volumeusage where node_name=node_name
and filespace_name=filespace_name

This will give you a list of all volumes that contain data for that
node's given filespace(s). Eliminate the volume that are available, and
you can (hopefully) narrow down your search properly.

If you would check the ADSM-L archives, you would see that this topic
has
been discussed numerous times in the past.

Everyone has their opinions/likes/dislikes/needs/budgets/etc, which are
often factors in what software is purchased.

I use TSMManager and think it is fantastic. The developer is very
responsive to ideas/suggestions/changes in their product. The product
has
had many revisions over the year I have been working with it, each
getting
better and better and adding lots of new features, enhancements, etc.

YMMV

Re: Full W2K Server restore

2004-02-25 Thread Barnes, Kenny
We have been able to restore AD to the same hardware by restoring the
c:\* and then restoring all system objects with out rebooting. Once both
have been restored, then reboot. Restoring to different hardware is
another story.

Client version 5.1.5.

We are starting to use VMware and run a DC with no primary roles and
backup the OS as a file and restore the file from TSM.

Subject: Full W2K Server restore

Hi all.

We are using TSM 5.1.6 to backup w2k nodes. These nodes are W2K server
Domain controllers.
We are testing full restores on other kind hardwre. We have been working
on the Bare Metal restore Redbook.
Our procedure was to:
1- Bring a new machine with different hardware, same IP, same nodename
5Ip
could be different), with W2K server and TSM client 5.16 pre-installed,
2- Restore the whole machine on the new one, except systemobjects,
3- Reboot the new server, in AD reconstruction mode,
4- Restore the systemobjects,
5- Reboot.

Unfortunately, we are not able to restore the systemobjects in the 4th
step. TSm don't even allow us to do it. Object ID problem??
Anyone has been able to test a full restore for w2k servers using
different hardware, even same hardware?
The problem using different hardware versus same hardware should be HAL
compatibility slice, shouldn't it? This is solved when using Ntbackup
(merge some registry entries related to hardware specifications).
Therefore we are trying to get rid of it too with TSM...

Re: Reclaim failing on off-site copy pool

2003-10-14 Thread Barnes, Kenny
I am thinking that this is what has happened. I am digging for facts.
We did run reclaim on other tape pools as well during this time. I
think reclaim builds its list before it actually processes, if this is
the case the data may have been moved before it actually gets to it?

Thanks,

Are any of the onsite tapes required for the reclamation in an
unavailable
state or not in your library? Check the server activity log for right
before
the reclamation fails for any messages. Or just Q VOL ACC=UNAVAIL to see
if
there are any tapes marked unavailable for some reason. It could also
have
been preempted because a higher priority task needed a tape drive. Check
the
activity log.

Re: cleint passwd

2003-07-23 Thread Barnes, Kenny
There are a couple of ways, but try using the browser interface to
update client and retype password. Go to client and open a session, in
which you should get prompted for a password. Stop and restart
service/demon depending on OS.

You might want to verify the spelling of [asswordaccess generate]?

It would also be help if server OS and client OS were defined.

Hi everyone,

What is the recommended way to set a client's password after it is
forgotten without turning off authentication? I can't seem to find
this in any of the docs.

when I set UPDATE NODE nodename password, sever scheduled backups
failing.

FYI: in dsm.sys of every client I have [asswordaccess generate]

We have two drives that show state unknown when queried with f=d.

According to TSM:
Unknown The drive begins in drive state unknown as a result of being
defined, as a result of server initialization, or as a result of having
its
status updated to online.

We have had to update the status of these two drives to online after
some
tapes had knocked them offline.

The drives are now online but TSM is not using them.

Is there a way to change the drive state to empty or ready for
operation?
