Subject: Ideal storage solution for SP and SP+ ???

What storage solution is at the top of your list for Spectrum Protect and
Spectrum Protect Plus?

I am a former a Data Domain abuser who (regretfully) moved to EMC Isilon and
now looking for the best possible replacement.
Usable storage requirement of somewhere in the neighborhood of 500+ tb.

Operation protects roughly 2,100 clients. About 75% VMware VMs and SQL with a
scattering of AIX hosting DB2 & Oracle.

Currently primarily protected using Spectrum Protect servers using BA, TDP, and
SP4VE but looking to migrate all possible operations to Spectrum Protect Plus.

At this time the plan would be to retain only the most recent (active) data at
our production facility on high performing storage to provide quick recovery
then using replicate inactive data to our DR facility to be offloaded to
Spectrum Protect servers and/or cloud.

All feedback and advice welcome. Thanks !

Tandem and TSM

2006-11-08 Thread Burton, Robert
We are backing up our tandem systems ... You require a third party product for
the tandem system ... I've included some doc ...

BACKHOME/TSM

Tivoli Storage Manager for Tandem

Advances in data storage hardware and data management software have made
centralized storage management a reality.

Network backbones now connect distributed systems with channel level
performance, allowing server-based applications to

deliver functions and services previously dispersed upon individual client
systems.

ETI-NET has developed a family of connectivity solutions that capitalize on
cross-platform opportunities.

For over a decade ETI-NET has been providing Tandem users with high quality,
easy to use products, which merge Tandem/HP benefits

with those from IBM and Microsoft.

BackHome is a Tandem application that automates the transfer of backup and
restore activity across network facilities into non-

Tandem storage servers.

The Client API for Tivoli Storage Manager, running in the Tandem, links Tandem
to Tivoli server software running in UNIX, Windows NT, MVS,

or other popular server environments.

BackHome/TSM also supports TM/MP tape services, such as audit tape creation and
online dump activity.

The functionality of BackHome has been evolving since 1988, when ETI-NET first
provided support for IBM MVS tape creation across multiplexed

9600 bps communications lines. Today, using TCP/IP or APPC, connections of 100
Mbps and greater are normal and BackHome TSM

performance makes network attachments transparent.

Users will appreciate the array of storage devices supported by Tivoli Storage
Manager server, and the cost-effectiveness of sharing

robotic tape subsystems with other Tandem or non- Tandem platforms. Disaster
recovery procedures also benefit from the centralized

administration that is adopted with Tivoli Storage Manager.

BACKHOME/TSM

BACKUP/RESTORE

BackHome allows bi-directional transfer of backup or restore objects to and
from the server.

Transfer integrity is controlled by integrated modules in the API.

High throughput and high line utilization are achieved through data
compression, advanced I/O buffering techniques and parallelism.

CATALOG

Information about files can be stored in an ETI-NET-provided catalog at backup
time.

Commands are available through the BFSINT (BackHome User Interface) for
locating and updating information in the

catalog. This provides significant improvements in BackHome ease of use.

FAST RESTORE

Fast Restore minimizes the amount of data needing to transit the network during
restores. At backup time a catalog entry is created for each file, and a

BackupID and Position Number is recorded. At restore time, the user builds the
restore request, the Position Number is retrieved from the catalog on Tandem and

passed to the server holding the backup set. The server starts transmitting the
files to restore from the Position Number, bypassing unnecessary files.

CHECKPOINT RESTART

BackHome provides the capability to process a backup as multiple transactions,
where each transaction can be 'committed' in the form of a checkpoint. The

Tivoli server provides roll-back processing to the last checkpoint when the
in-process transaction fails.

TSM API

The Tivoli TSM API on Tandem NSK operates at D43 or higher, and supports
connection to every Tivoli Storage Manager server. ETI-NET provides testing
modules to allow the TSM API-to-TSM server conversation to be diagnosed
independently of BackHome.

EVENT LOGGING

Logging of all activity is written to dual alternating log files. Users may
interactively access these event messages through the BackHome interactive user
interface or they can be sent to the Tandem EMS system. TSM stored objects and
back-up sets can also be reviewed through TSM API commands on Tandem.

BENEFITS

* Standardizes Tandem within enterprise-wide storage management approach.

* Allows access to best cost/performing storage media and subsystems available
industry wide.

* Improves utilization of storage by sharing resources.

* Simplifies disaster recovery planning.

* Normalizes tape media for improved archiving and vaulting.

* Reduces tape quantity through advanced reclamation techniques.

INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

Installation is easy. The system can be operational within less than four
hours. Training and onsite support is available.

Maintenance support and product updates are provided as part of a standard
license agreement with each product installation.

FEATURES

BACKHOME/TSM

* Non-disruptive installation * Interactive, batch, and programmatic interfaces

* Conditional completion cascading

* Auto Restart

* Optional TMF support

* Selectable data compression

* Compatibility with job schedulers and security systems

* Satisfied customers

TSM API

* Version 2.1 or Higher

Axel - The TSM API is the media manager layer for this Oracle DB
interface,
and the errno can be expected to be a TSM API error number, as
documented in its manual. 2230 tells of the alleged dsm.sys file not
being present, or the inclexcl file pointed to by it. I would check
environment variables. If you also have the standard B/A client in
place, do 'dsmc q opt'
and 'dsmc q inclexcl' to assure that it can access those files as a
basis:
the TDP may use those, or its own files, as per environment variables.

TSM Reclamation and large tape formats

2005-06-09 Thread Burton, Robert
We are being pushed to improve our reclamation thresholds in order to drive
down the amount of tape volsers required...

We are using STK 9940 tape drives and get 300GB - 1 TB of data stored on each
tape. I'm trying to explain that with the larger tape sizes it is much more
difficult to keep the reclamation numbers at the same target levels as with the
smaller tape volumes.

We have 2 tsm servers / 50 lan-free clients / approx 2 TB of disk pool and we
backup 8 TB nightly...

Between copypool and migration we have limited reclamation cycles...

Just inquiring on what the rest of the tsm community is experiencing in regards
to tsm reclamation with large tape...

Hello all,

I have searched the archives, but have not found anything specific on this
subject.
I have seen some appends regarding copy stg pools, but not primary.

I am after some information from anyone has has used, or who knows anyone
who has used, a NAS device as a primary storage pool. I am especially
interested
in the windows platform implementation, but any platform comments will be
welcomed.
I know there are some implications, but would like to hear ANY comments, or
opinions.
I am interested in issues relating to:
   performance
'user' connection vs 'system or service' connection
IP (NAS) vs SCSI (local disk) issues
   permissions
   useability
   or anything else applicable...

Note - I am only talking about stg pools, not database or log allocations.
Thank you for any help you can give me on this.

Subject: not preempted by higher priority operation

Hi List ...

Has this ever happened to you?

I have only two tape drives, so they pretty much run non-stop.
But when someone goes in to do a restore, whatever is running gets
preempted and the restore gets completed as a priority.
But sometimes.for some reason..TSM does not preempt whatever is
running and the restore just sits there and never runs.

It happened to us this morning. Both tape drives were migrating data, so
nothing with a seriously high priority.Neither drive was writing out
any seriously large file or seriously large client, we co-locate and were
mounting tapes left and right, we were down to the last few clients.

The restore sat there for more than an hour in a Tape Wait state.

The customer finally killed the restore. When I restarted it later, it
ran without issue, at that time we were doing reclamation with both drives.

Server is Windows 2000
Server is SP3
TSM Server 5.1.7.0
TSM Client 5.1.5.0 (Windows 2000)
IBM 3494 library
IBM 3590 E1A drives

This isn't the first time this has happened, and it doesn't happen all the
time. I usually get impatient and kill whatever is running so that a tape
drive becomes available. Whenever this happens, we don't get the

Can anyone explain why this would happen?

Re: STORAGNT not working, any suggestions?

2003-06-09 Thread Burton, Robert
This has happened to me in the past, when I incorrectly entered the
dsmsta
setstorageserver command incorrectly.

In my case any traffic from the client node to the tsm server would get
the
same message (not only the storageagent also the ba client)

I had to recycle the tsm server to free up whatever got hosed up on the
tcpip side of things.
Then delete the storage agent and server entries in the devconfig file
and
re-enter the dsmsta setstorageserver command again...

Hello again everyone!

Right now we have another TPOC going that is working with a 3584 LTO2
library with 2 drives so that we can test LAN-free. (Our previous 2
tests
with 9840B and 3590E were not true LAN-free tests because we only had
one
drive and a manual library) Right now we are having problems with the
storagnt configuration. We are seeing the following messages. The
individuals working on this would just like to know if anyone has any
suggestions/comments. Also, if anyone would be willing to send us your
dsm.sys file on the client, dsmsta.opt file on the storagnt, and
anything
else that may pertain to this setup we would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you in advance!!

When I cancel a process that is using multiple drives, like a 'move

is
there quick way of killing the processes that are using the drives

TSM 5116 server / storageagent performance degradation

2002-11-15 Thread Burton, Robert
We were running tsm 4.2.2.4 on an S7A AIX server. We were putting through
approx 1.7 TB nightly with approx 85%
going to disk storagepool and the remaining going direct to tape. We were
also testing Lan-free with Gresham EDT-Distributape and STK acsls/9840 tape
drives and we were consistently on an UDB api backup receiving 15 MB/s

one month ago we upgraded all server and storageagents to tsm 5.1.1.6 level
and since then we have seen performance drop. We are having trouble getting
through the 1.7 TB nightly. The same lan-free tests are only getting us
around 10 MB/s.

We will be upgrading to a bigger and more powerful aix server this weekend
in hopes that the performance drop is related to our S7a server reaching the
end of its life span but I know when we upgraded from tsm 3.7 to 4.2 we saw
an increase in server performance, I'm worried that the upgrade from 4.2 to
5.1 has gone in reverse.

Has anybody sees anything remotely similar after an upgrade to tsm 5.1.1.6
???

Did you go to 64 bit mode when you went to 5.1.1.6? We have some
clients that start out backing up at a good rate and then shift into a
mode where they are running very very slow. We now think this might be
a 64 bit mode server problem.

Re: Space reclamation runs, but tapes don't free up

2002-10-02 Thread Burton, Robert

There is a known problem opened with IBM on this... We were told to upgrade
to tsm 4.2.2.4 or higher...this seemed to clean up most but not all these
problems... If you q content on the tape it is empty, yet if you try to do
reclamation or delete it you are informed that there is still data on it
We were told we would have to issue an auditdb to clean it up...this would
knock our production server off the air for over 27 hrs...so we opted no to
do this

When we tried to upgrade from tsm 4.2.2.4 to tsm 5.1.0.0 we experienced the
following problem:

Item PQ64254

  APAR Identifier .. PQ64254 Last Changed..02/09/12
  ANRD IMINIT.C GROUP.MEMBERS ERROR 8 UPGRADEDB

We were informed to upgrade to 5.1.1.4 or higher and run a cleanup
backupgroups commandthis also fixed nothing

I have an additiona PMR opened with IBM on this problem and am waiting to
hear back...

Why has your tape got a status of filling ?

I opened a PMR. Level 1 suggested to run the command cleanup backupgroup
and retry the delete filespace command. It didn't help. The next advice was
to upgrade to TSM 5.1.1.6 and retry the cleanup backupgroup and del
filespace. The next thing to do would be a dsmserv auditdb. However, this
would take a lot of time with my 55 GB database.

Has anyone else seen this? Level 1 told me that he found only one similar
problem.
Best regards
Gerhard

Re: Exchange file performance

2002-07-04 Thread Burton, Robert

I understand that there may be some limitations to the Exchange API but I am
not using this. I have shutdown all Exchange services and I am backing up
the database offline using TSM BA client 5.1 and I still see the same
performance of 8mb/sec. So in this case I am simply copying the file as flat
file. I would expect better performance than this. Any ideas?

Exchange is not a file level backup. It is more like a database unload.
The Microsoft Exchange Backup API is only designed for 30GB/hr. Funny, that
figures out to 8.33MB/sec. However, on much faster servers with FC disk I
have seen a little faster than this.

Hi All,

I am running TSM server 5.1.0.0, TSM BA Client 5.1.0.1, TDP for Exchange
2.2.0.0 and Exchange 2000. I noticed that when I backup the exchange
database using TDP or BA client I only get approximately 8mb/sec aggregate.
So I created a file of the same size, 1.4gb, and I got 25mb/sec aggregate.

Has anyone encountered a performance difference such this when backing up

Exchange file performance

2002-07-03 Thread Burton, Robert

Has anyone encountered a performance difference such this when backing up
Exchange files?

I would like to know how folks who have an AS/400, backup their systems,
to TSM and their experiences (good or bad) !

Last time I visited this issue, IBM did not support this (last client
seems to be 3.x something) and you had to go to the HELP SYSTEMS/ROBOT
folks. However, I have not had much luck in searching their site for info.

Unfortunately, IBM seems to be updating the TSM client page (I keep
getting a blank page) !!

Re: ACSLS Library w/TSM 4.2.1.7 and database restore

2002-01-16 Thread Burton, Robert

We run database restores all the time with a acsls 9310 library on aix
controlled by acsls.
What we do is edit the devconfig file and define the library and one tape
drive as manual devices...
Then when the restore of the database starts it asks that the backup tape be
mounted on the manual drive defined.
We then log onto acssa on the acsls machine and issue a mount command to the
tape drive.
After the database is restored it will still have all your original library
and tape drive definitions

Hello Alex,

Hello, Rolf. I wasn't able to find further information about how STK
ACSLS
libraries aren't supported during database restore. Where is this
 documented?

we opened a PMR regarding this a couple of months ago. This PMR was closed
with the comment that the STK ACSLS libraries are not supported in TSM 4.2
during database restores. Sorry, I cannot remember the APAR number and
cannot look into the closed PMR because it already disappeared.

Perhaps somebody of the Tivoli server people listing here can tell us
more about it.

TSM and AIX HACMP environment

 Hello fellow TSMers,

I have a situation where one aix server is used for a HACMP failover node
for 3 separate servers. Due to company auditors we have to have tsm
passwords expired and re-generated every 35 days. I'm trying to figure out
an easy way to run tsm activities on the HACMP client which may be 1 of 3
different clients at any one time. Has anyone out there set-up a
configuration similar...

any advise would be greatly appreciated

We then have the DBA's imbed a delete backup for anything older than the

Hi *SMers.

As you know, when you backup DB2 it stamps an unique id to its backup,
making it an active version forever, then you can't expire that backup.
Does anyone know how to expire this kind of backups?
Thanks in advance.

The problem is probably related to your TCP/IP configuration. Attempt to
'ping' your ADSM server as soon as the error occurs.
In addition, use 'query opt' to check the following settings on your
ADSM server:

1. COMMTIMEOUT is on 60 (sec.) by default; increase to 900.

2. IDLETIMEOUT is on 15 (min.) by default.

Parameter COMMTIMEOUT is reset by the following ADSM command:

adsm setopt COMMTIMEOUT new value

What I understood from your setup is as follows.

You are doing cold backup everyday using TSM disk pools. Your backup time is
6 hrs for 500 Gig and you will be backing up 1TB in next few months. Your
TSM server has only one SSA Adapter.

If you could do following changes in your setup, You should be able to
reduce backup window time.

1. Schedule backup with multiple threads using Gigabit Fiber Channel
Interface.
2. Configure Copy group to send backup data directly to tapes( Don't use
disk group)

The amount of data is the same everday 500GB full backup. I'm using one SSA
card in the tsm system. I could get Gig cards if I have proof that I'm
maxing out the current 100mb cards in the system and I don't seem to be
doing that. The tsm server is plugged into the same switch has the backup
server and on the same ip subnet. Also, the database files that I'm backing
up are just oracle dump files. The tsm serve is also running aix 4.3.3.

we backup 1.2 Gig to TSM. It's running with 6 drives. No LAN/Free. But it's
Client/Free backup. To restore we have placed Gbit Interfaces in Client and
TSM Server.

You need to give more information of your server and database.

Are you doing incremental or full backup and which database you have?
If incremental how much data is changed everyday?

Can you afford GBit interface between data server and TSM? ( IT needs 2
adapter and 1 switch)
How many drives your library have? How many SSA adapters are installed in
server?

Hello,

I have a problem at the moment;

We have an ACSLS library. Whenever we do tape offsiting using DRM, the

move drm * wherestate=mountable tostate=vault

fails, because the tapes are left in the library cap / io station for longer
than 10 mins. ACSLS returns the following;

04/19/01 14:10:16 ANR8856E ACSAPI sequence(125) request(16792) timed
out,
   elapse time=00:10:07.

04/19/01 14:10:16 ANR8855E ACSAPI(acs_eject_volume) response with

   unsuccessful status, status=STATUS_IPC_FAILURE.

It fails becuase the vaulting command is run at 14:00 each day but operators
may not remove the tapes for up to 2 hours after that.

That tapes sit in the IO cap, after 10 mins ACSLS is reporting back to TSM
saying request timed out, but later the ops remove the tapes and they are no
longer in the library. TSM thinks they are.

Does anyone know how to chenge the length of the timeout for eject requests
from TSM in an ACSLS managed library?

Thanks,

Matt.

Hello people,
one of my customers is running into the following problem;
With TSM server 3.7 on NT 4 sp6a, and TSM client 3.7 on NT4 sp6a, restore
is really slow. Checking all normal parameters in both server and client
.opt files does not seem to help. My suspiscion is then turned to network
issues, but according to the customer, they do not have any network
problems.

When I restore using the client GUI, and watch the status indicator, when a
file reaches 100%, it waits for a long time (bigger file - longer time)
before it continues with the next, I have also watched
performance/utililzation of CPU, memory and network traffic, on both client
and server while doing this, and none of these indicates that something is
unusual. Both CPU and mem is low, network is maxed, but drops when a file
is done. The result is a throughput somewhere around 950MB per hour. Not
very impressing.

Is this likely to be a TSM problem, or in other words - where should I go
from here?

Any suggestions will be helpful!

Hello,
your adapter needs to be configured as "fcs0" device
for it to work with the TSM smit menus.
Since your adapter is defined as an lpfc0 device, this tells
me that you have loaded the "emulex" device driver.
The Emulex device driver corresponds to the following filesets :
 devices.pci.lpfc.diag
 devices.pci.lpfc.rte
Those filesets are provided by Emulex. In order to have
the device recognized as a fcs0 device instead of lpfc0
device, you need to remove those two filesets and
rerun cfgmgr. You of course will need to have the proper
IBM AIX fibre channel filesets installed. Those filesets
are dicussed in the TSM server readme.

Have a great day !

STK / TSM question

2000-08-08 Thread Burton, Robert

Hello Everyone,

Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions for a problem I am having.

Have an STK 9310 with 8 9840 drives, being controlled, of course, by
ACSLS(5.3.2). TSM Server is 3.7.3.0 (AIX). We had a problem encountered
that killed our Library as TSM was
in the process of using it. 6 out of 8 drives went unavailable. Since that
time STK has been in and corrected the library problems. The 2 drives that
were not being used at the time of the crash are working fine yet the 6 that
are unavailable I cannot get back online to TSM. When I update the drive it
replies that the drive is in useIf I try to delete and redefine I get
reply drive is in use. Does anyone know of a way to get these drives
back to TSM without having to cycle the server

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
