Backing out of a container storagepool

2017-08-02 Thread David Ehresman
We have some data in a container storagepool and now have the need to move it
back to a virtual tape pool. Is there anything other than updating the
copygroup to point to the vtl and do full backups that I can do to move the
data out of the container pool to a primary vtl pool?

HI all

At my current gig, we are running a TSM VE environment. Server is AIX, storage
agents and vBS on physical linux X86_64. Disk is on V840 flash, back end is
protectier VTL. TSM Server 7.1.1, Storage agent 7.1.1, TSM For VE 7.1.1 can't
go higher because of an old Vcenter version.

Backups run using SAN transport to VBS servers, through the storage agents
direct to the VTL. Now we are ramping up, adding more VMware clusters.
Now everywhere else in TSM, when you run up against the devclass device limits,
TSM queues nicely and waits for a tape drive. However for the VE backups, when
we have used all the drives (48!) we get a "server media mount not possible"
error and a failed backup for the VM.

Have others found this? Is there a work around?

Hi guy's,

I don't know if all of you realise what kind of gigantic performance step
IBM has made with the new version of Spectrum Protect for Virtual
Environments for VMware but I think it's pretty incredible.

The magic parameter is VMMAXRESTORESESSION.
See the results below, 1 session was the max that 7.x could do, see the
speeds below when I crank up the sessions.
Remember, this is restoring a single VM on a single datamover using HOTADD.

10 is the max setting for this value, i'm interested to know if you guy's
are seeing the same kind of results.
Oh, and the upgrade was a breeze, if you aren't using the tagging features
it's just next next finish and the restores go so much faster.

TSM DB spaces

2017-01-06 Thread David Ehresman

120GB filespaces. I need to dramatically increase the size of the DB as we
prepare for dedup. I know I can have 128 DB filespaces. What, if any, are the
performance implications of just adding more filespaces vs staying with a
smaller number of much larger filespaces? The filespaces are SAN attached XIV

2016-10-24 Thread David Ehresman
IF
You have an outstanding schedule pending
AND IF
You then restart the CAD, the CAD will start a scheduler run to see what is the
next scheduled event. If one is currently pending, that scheduler run will run
that pending schedule. In this case, the TSM server has not reached out to the
client, the client initiated the interaction.

The 30 day retention period for a specific backup copy starts when TSM
discovers that the corresponding file on the client system's disk has been
deleted or updated. TSM never got the opportunity to make that discovery for
backup copies of the files on the client system's disk at the time of the last
backup. Those backup copies will stay around until a TSM administrator forces
the TSM server to get rid of them. I usually deal with this by executing
"delete filespace" commands on a deletion date negotiated with the client
system administrator (usually 60 days after the last backup session).

re-initializing a tsm instance

2016-10-03 Thread David Ehresman
Is there a procedure for re-initializing a tsm instance? I want to reuse
existing tsm db and log filespaces but re-initialize it as a fresh empty
instance.

I'm thinking I can just erase all the files in the db and log directories and
then rerun the initial initialize gui. Am I missing something?

AIX 7.1 & TSM 7.1.7.0.

Re: occupancy

2016-09-16 Thread David Ehresman
A "delete filespace" will delete the filespace from all storage pools. If it
were me, I'd do a "move nodedata DINO from=DEVT_PRIM to=WIN2K_PRIM" to move
the remaining data from the one stgpool to the other and let normal TSM
expiration sort out what needs to stay.

Hello. I just stumbled on this yesterday and I don't when this happened or
what I did to make this happen. (I'm assuming it was part of a different
storagepool/domain at some point)

I have a node which I'll call DINO, it's been backing up fine for some time now.
When I do an 'FI' on it, I see this:

Node Name: DINO
   Filespace Name: DINO\SystemState\NULL\System State\SystemState
 FSID: 1
 Platform: WinNT
   Filespace Type: VSS
Is Filespace Unicode?: Yes
 Capacity: 0 KB
 Pct Util: 0.0

Node Name: DINO
   Filespace Name: \\dino\c$
 FSID: 2
 Platform: WinNT
   Filespace Type: NTFS
Is Filespace Unicode?: Yes
 Capacity: 99 GB
 Pct Util: 36.7

Looks ok, but when I do a 'occ' on it, I see this:

DINO Bkup DINO-1 WIN2K_PRIM 90,132 -6,420.42
 \System-
 State\NU-
 LL\System
 State\Sy-
 stemState
DINO Bkup \\dino\c$-2 DEVT_PRIM 314 -3.54
DINO Bkup \\dino\c$-2 WIN2K_PRIM 113,919 - 54,917.20

I need to get rid of the c: on the storage pool called 'DEVT_PRIM'. Both had a
FSID of '2'. If I delete the FI with FSID=2, do we know if it will delete both
occ from both storage pools? (I can always back it up again afterwards). Or
is there a way to delete just the FSID=2 for storage pool DEVT_PRIM?

Thanks!

Richard,

I have recently moved several TSM servers between AIX systems (without
restoring the DBs). Some points of attention:

On a system without TSM, you must first install TSM software. You will also
need some tweaking of the DB registry.

1. correct hostname in /sqllib/db2nodes.cfg
2. /etc/services must contain:

DB2_ 60016/tcp
DB2__160017/tcp
DB2__260018/tcp
DB2__END 60019/tcp

Ports can vary, but must be in sequence

3. Instance "update": /opt/tivoli/tsm/db2/instance/db2iupdt
4. As instance owner: ~/sqllib/adm/db2set -g DB2SYSTEM=
5. dsm.sys for DBbackups has to be present (location depends on the TSM server
version)

If you need more details please PM me.

Met vriendelijke groet / With kind regards,

No, DB2 won't start at all.

rssymapi2p:/tsmdata/tsmoc/config==>db2start
SQL6031N Error in the db2nodes.cfg file at line number "0". Reason code "11".

I'm not sure how to state this, but I think there is some configuration in DB2
(that would be in on the boot drive) that points to the TSM database TSMDB1. I
think that configuration is missing.

For example, I found out about this cmd fighting a db2 problem some time ago.
Run on a working TSM system:
   ./db2ilist
   tsmuser (our db2 owner)
Run on this recovered system:
   ./db2ilist(no output)

Was db2 running for sure?
In previous installs I had to modify the startup script to do a db2start then
sleep for 10 secs to get tsm to start correctly fron reboot of the system.
This was under redhat linux 6.

That was the message I would get.

Hello,

We have a TSM v7.1.4 instance called TSMOC. Its sole purpose in life is to run
Operations Center. It runs on an AIX lpar that's used for some other things.

Last Friday the AIX rootvg was lost during a live migration to a new storage
system. We decided to recover by installing a mksysb from a partner lpar which
had the same AIX version and application version, but NOT TSM. So the lpar got
back up and running quickly - only took an hour, but it's missing the TSM
install. All the TSM instance files (dsmserv.opt, etc) and DB2 filesystems
(data, logs, sqllib, etc) exist with all their data. They weren't lost since
they were on a different lun and volume group.

We installed TSM v7.1.4 and I then created the AIX db2 instance owner and
group. We then tried to start TSM. We got msgs below.

ANR7801I Subsystem process ID is 16056324.

Removing containers

2016-09-07 Thread David Ehresman
My container storagepool has a reuse=0. I have some containers marked as
state-unavailable. I did "audit containter" with "action=scand" followed by
"action=removed". That was yesterday but the containers are still there. When
will they be removed?

Re: Which process generates ANR1423W messages?

2016-09-01 Thread David Ehresman
Mu guess is that the time specified for reuse delay on the stgpool the volume
has expired for that volume. When a vol goes scratch, it starts a reuse delay
timer and after that expires it is normally deleted. If the volume is offsite,
it is not deleted until it comes home.

Folks:
Does anyone know which process generates ANR1423W messages? The message
itself is somewhat innocuous:

ANR1423W Scratch volume VV is empty but will not be deleted - volume access
mode is “offsite”

but the intriguing part is there is no session or process associated with the
message, either in the activity log or in the ACTLOG table. Nor are there any
entries in the summary table for these entities - and the only process running
at the time was a storage pool backup for a different storage pool. There were
client backups in progress, but this message originated from the server.

I had two volumes with errors that I was struggling to get the data off for
several days - and suddenly, magically, an ANR1423W appeared for both volumes.
Headache gone, curiosity piqued.

We are just starting to roll out replication and I have a problem.

Many months ago, I tested replication/configuration on a single node. Now
I need to delete the node and all of its filespaces.

But the target server used for replication testing has been taken
down/unavailable.

Now when I issued delete filespaces for the node on the source server, the
delete process has hung. Attempting to cancel the delete process has been
hung for >24-hours and is starting to cause log pinning issues.

I am ready to bounce this server (RH Linux with 6.3.5.100 server) but still
don't know how to delete these filespaces without hanging things up, again.

I have turned off replication on the source server. Tried to update the
node to disable replication but that didn't seem to help/take.

Deduplication Savings: 153,840 G (90.83%)
  Compression Savings: 8,711 G (56.07%)

So on top of the 90.83% deduplication saving (that dont' require any

These figures require a lot of duplicate data of course but still,

I can assure you that compression was NOT part of the earlier releases on 7.1.5
on AIX. I had to painfully tear down a system we were trying to convert to
because compression was not included in the early 7.1.5 releases and dedup
alone was not meeting saving expectations.

Minor correction.

Inline compression for container pools was added in March in 7.1.5.

IBM Spectrum Protect 7.1.5 - Inline compression:

- Performed in-line after deduplication to provide additional storage

savings

- Negligible impact on resources – uses latest and most efficient

compression algorithms

- Can potentially double (or more) your storage savings after

deduplication

Paul,

You are right. All of my data is in primary storage pools so I no longer worry
about copy pools. Back when I had copy pools, my storage pool names would
indicate whether it was primary or copy pool. Can you mask on pool name to
distinguish between primary and copy pool?

If so,

select node_name,sum(reporting_mb) as "TOTAL_OCCUPANCY" from occupancy group by
node_name where stgpool_name like '%NAME MASK%'c

Alternatively,

select node_name,sum(reporting_mb) as "TOTAL_OCCUPANCY" from occupancy where
stgpool_name in (select stgpool_name from stgpools where POOLTYPE='PRIMARY' )
group by node_name

Thanks. I ran this command and it ran successfully and provided me with a list

However they are a lot higher than what is reported by my query auditocc

Does it total just the primary storage or all storage pools?

I am just interested in primary storage to keep track of storage used as we
have the unified terabyte licensing for TSM.

For one of the nodes - an SQL server - it is reporting that the backup storage

However knowing the size of the databases on that server and the number of
copies of each backup we keep, I believe that to be incorrect.

I started the DP for SQL client on that server, clicked on Restore Data, and
then selected all backups (both active and inactive).

I then added up the size of each backup (both active and inactive) and it added
up to 2.2Tb.

How could there be such a huge difference between each total?

It might be useful to turn on server side tracing before the db backup begins
and turn it off after it finishes. That way you would have a trace file to

And my question is, how can I see where this process is at?

The customer renamed 200+ VM's and all the old filespaces are being removed
from Spectrum Protect but seem stuck in this DELETED state, it seems like
all of them to be honest.

show dedupdeleteinfo show's nothing, everything is idle there.

I don't know where else too look. It seems like the data is not released
because the tape utilisation has not dropped, I did not expect much to
happen on disk (deduplication) but I did expect a big drop on tape that has
not occurred.

Has anybody here seen anything like this before?

Re: TSM4VE 7.1.3 - Backup report for a specific VM?

2016-06-01 Thread David Ehresman
On a datamover node, run:

dsmc -asnode=XXX
q vm YYY -inactive

where XXX is the "datacenter node" that is used to record the VME data
and YYY is the VM node in question.

You can add -detail to the query for more verbose output.

Looking to see if anyone has found a good way to run a report on a specific VM

In other words, I would like to show a server owner when their VM was backed up
and basic information about its success or failure.

Re: Drive preference in TSM

2016-05-23 Thread David Ehresman
An all tape storage setup is certainly feasible if you have sufficient tape
drives to allow your backups to complete in your backup window. Many of us
have used this setup in the past.

You can use mount retention on the device class definition to set how long you
would like a tape to remain mounted after it is no longer in use. You might be
able to use that combined with group collocation to reduce tape mounts although
it will not eliminate tape positioning time.

You can maintain two copies of your backups on tape in the same tape library by
making a copy storage pool in the same library as the primary storage pool.
These can either be written concurrently at backup time or the copy storage
pool can be populated by the "backup stgpool" command after backups complete.

Hi Maurice,

Thanks for pointing out at basic level.

But if you read my mail, where as i have clearly written about the feature
of drive preference in TSM rather than disk pool or any other alternate.

I am not looking for alternate in my current setup. If i have plenty of
drive in my setup than why will use the disk pool. Also i have the
sufficient SAN Agent license for that.

Some where i had read, TSM is fully capable to take the backup in tape,
then why we should not use?

Draw back of using the disk/file pool is, if disk/file pool and your data
exist in same storage. Suppose if your storage fail or it is not
recoverable, than it is no use. You can'nt restore data from disk pool as
it is in same storage.

So it is wise to do not use from same storage for backup and data purpose.

And most of the customer do not have multiple storage.

Two feature i missing in TSM and i am looking for it and if it is available
its good

1. Drive preference for node.
2. Copy of node data in same TSM Server for safety purpose. Not in replica.
So that we can have two physical media for same node data.

Regards,

I was wondering if anybody else was having a problem with the proxy not
releasing snapshots?

We have 11 proxies that backup VM each night to a Linux server running TSM
7.1.1.0. But, for some reason one of these proxies will not release all the
snapshots and it eats up storage. This happens about two times a week and it
just holds onto storage until I log on to the proxy remove the disk and
consolidate every VM that it was holding onto.

Is there any way to monitor or get an alarm through TSM that this is happening.

Thanks for the help

Hi all,

The IBM Spectrum Protect server package is updated with a new license when
the code is "re-based", i..e, that new level is being established as a new
base level of the software (not necessarily an x.x.0.0 level). It is the
re-based server packages that are put on Passport Advantage. 7.1.3.0 was
the most recent re-base of the server.

If your v6 tsm is a different server than your v7 tsm, then you only need to do
step 1 of the procedure below. It is only if you are trying to get the data

Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] Directory-Container Storage Pools - Export/Import

Thanks David. I think the steps you mention follow what is in the
directory-container storage pool FAQ:

Q6. How can I store existing data to a directory-container pool by using
replication? Are there other techniques?
Firstly, a conversion utility is currently being considered by product
management. Currently, the only methods that you can use to store data in a
directory-container pool are:
* Client store operations such as backup, archive, and space management.
* Node Replication from another server.
You can use node replication to move data from one storage pool to another on
the same machine, but you must replicate the data to another server to do this.
For example, if you have a node, N1, on a server, S1, in a storage pool, P1,
and you want to move it to a directory-container storage pool, P2, you must
complete the following steps:
1. Replicate all the data for node N1 to server S2.
2. Rename node N1 to N1.X.
3. Replicate the node to server S1 from server S2.
4. Change the management class and the copy group destinations, or both,
in the policy on server S1 to ensure that the data from server S2 is stored the
directory-container storage pool, P2.
When all the data from node N1 is stored on server S1, you can delete the file
spaces for node N1 on servers S1 and S2, remove node N1.X from server S1, and
remove node N1 from server S2. To switch replication directions, you must use
the REMOVE REPLNODE command after the first replication (from S1 to S2) on both
servers and then re-enable replication on server S2 to server S1. You cannot
use the node replication on a single file space within a node. The entire node
must be replicated.

This process seems cumbersome. Would be much easier to start backing up node
again on new 7.1.5.0 server and age node out on 6.3.5.100 server. I hope they

Copy the policy domain from source to destination, and then in the destination,
point the target to the container.

No, but these, or similar, capabilities are being considered by IBM Spectrum

in our test environment (server and client 7.1.4, OC and hub server
Windows 2012 R2, spoke server AIX) the SSL connection using TSM server
self-signed SHA certificates (cert256.arm) works just fine. We got it
running without any problems, just by following the admin guide.

The problems came when we tried to add a spoke server running server
version 6.3.4.300 with a CA issued certificate to our other OC and hub
server (running version 7.1.3 both). There we get a ton of GSKit error
messages, and the SSL connection only works from 6.3.4.300 to 7.1.3, but
not the other way.

So, do you have any CA issued SSL certificates in your environment?

I think most of you know Spectrum Protect just added in-line compression
to the container and cloud deduplicated pools in version 7.1.5:

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.ibm.com_support_knowledgecenter_SSGSG7-5F7.1.5_srv.common_r-5Ftechchg-5Fsrv-5Fcompress-5F715.html=AwIFAg=SgMrq23dbjbGX6e0ZsSHgEZX6A4IAf1SO3AJ2bNrHlk=dOGCMY197NTNH1k_wcsrWS3_fxedKW4rpKJ8cHCD2L8=OMHhA4Nmsv9Buo24T83zOFo8w4mvoMyvC_nagZn36T0=C4shp8VD_EyXjruT5Lu2v68tMVpfpzHcluAuRJfaIK0=

Adding incremental forever, the new in-line deduplication - client or
server-based (7.1.3), new in-line compression (7.1.5) I think you will
find that Protect continues to drive overall data reduction. This is being
done in the software, so you can choose what disk you want to use.

I encourage folks to try out the the new deduplication along with the new
compression to see how it helps with the overall data reduction.

Thank you,

TSM/VE and Containers

2016-03-18 Thread David Ehresman
How does TSM/VE fit into a containerized world? I assume I can write the data

If both the data and the metadata are in a container and that data is

Rebalance the TSM DB filespaces

2016-02-22 Thread David Ehresman
The tsmtutorials.com web page says you can rebalance space usage after adding a
new DB filespace by issuing the following commands:

  * Perform the rebalance activity during a quiet time. Logon as the server
instance owner and execute the DB2 commands below. (on Windows, you need to run
these commands from a DB2 Command Window and "set db2instance=server1).
db2 connect to tsmdb1
db2 set schema tsmdb1
db2 alter tablespace SYSCATSPACE rebalance
db2 alter tablespace USERSPACE1 rebalance
db2 alter tablespace LARGESPACE1 rebalance
db2 alter tablespace LARGEIDXSPACE1 rebalance
db2 alter tablespace IDXSPACE1 rebalance
db2 alter tablespace SYSTOOLSPACE rebalance

  * Depending on the size of the tablespace, the rebalance can take some time
to finish. For a large tablespace, the rebalance can take about 30 minutes. Run
the following command to check the rebalance status
db2 "select * from SYSIBMADM.TBSP_UTILIZATION " |grep -i progress

  * If the rebalance is still active, the above command will return the
tablespace still in active resizing. Wait until all tablespaces have done the
rebalance and execute the following commands to reduce the tablespaces
db2 alter tablespace SYSCATSPACE reduce max
db2 alter tablespace USERSPACE1 reduce max
db2 alter tablespace LARGESPACE1 reduce max
db2 alter tablespace LARGEIDXSPACE1 reduce max
db2 alter tablespace IDXSPACE1 reduce max
db2 alter tablespace SYSTOOLSPACE reduce max

  * After the rebalance/reduce, the file systems should be equally utilized
and there are should be no more file systems in 100% full condition.

Subject: [ADSM-L] Migration should preempt reclamation

I was under the impression that higher priority tasks could preempt
lower priority tasks. That is, migration should be able to preempt
reclamation. But it doesn't. A very careful reading of Administrator's
Guide tells me that it does not.

We're having a problem with a large client backup that fails, due to a
disk stgpool filling. (It's a new client, and this is its initial large
backup.) It fills up because the migration process can not get a tape
drive, due to their all being used for reclamation. This also prevents
the client backup from getting a tape drive directly. Does anybody have
a way for migration to get resources (drives, volumes, etc) when a
storage pool reaches its high migration threshold, and reclamation is
using those resources? "Careful scheduling" is the usual answer, but you
can't always schedule what client nodes do. Back on TSM 5.4 I built a
Unix cron job to look for this condition and cancel reclamation
processes, but it was a real Rube Goldberg contraption, so I'm reluctant
to revive it now in the TSM 6+ era. Anybody have a better way?

BTW, I thought I'd give the 7.1.4 Information center a try to answer
this. I searched on "preemption". 10 hits none of which were the answer.
So I went to the PDF of the old Administrator's Guide and found it right
away. We need that book!

If you run expiration explicitly (recommended) with the "expire inventory"

Hi all,

I’ve been working on getting fcm for vmware 4.1.3 and tdp vmware 7.1.3 working
on redhat 6.5. FCM and basic TSM functionality seem to work, I can make
snapshots and backups. But I’ve run into a few issues:

- the vCenter plug-in: it is available according to the vCenter client (manage
plug-ins), but not listed on the home tab under solutions and applications, nor
is it available in the vCenter web interface.
- the file restore UI: there is no frGUI folder in the webserver: The
application or context root for this request has not been found: /FileRestoreUI/

any hints on these issues would be greatly appreciated.

TSM for VM CTL data

2015-10-27 Thread David Ehresman
I'm trying to determine if I can reduce the amount of TSMVE CTL data I have to
restore at my DR site. I did a select against the backups table to count how
many active and inactive files I had. It told me that all the files in that
storage class were active and there were no inactive. How does TSMVE manage
that CTL meta data?

Has anyone tried using a VTL copy of the CTL data in a restore scenario instead
of doing a restore stg of the ctl disk pool before starting the VME restore?

Migrating VME from vCenter5 to vCenter6

2015-10-15 Thread David Ehresman
I have TSM for VE running in a vCenter5 environment. It was setup using one of
the early version GUIs to setup the VME environment. As such, I have a vCenter
node (which doesn't actually appear to do anything), a data center node (which
owns all the actual backups), a VMCLI node, and several data mover nodes. The
dsm.opt files on the data movers contain VMChost lines that point to the actual
VMware vcenter host. The TSM backup schedules were generated by the GUI but
have been manually edited since then. They have VMHOST options that specify to
backup all the VMs on a particular VMware host.

Our VMware team will be moving to vCenter6 soon. The vCenter will have a new
name but the data center and cluster names will be the same on vCenter6 as they
are on vCenter5. All of the VMware hosts will be moved from VC5 to VC6 during
one maintenance period. So what changes will I have to make to my TSMVE
environment to continue to backup the VMs?

I'm sure I will have to update the VMChost options in each of the data mover's
dsm.opt file. I can define a new vcenter node and define the proxies to match
my current vcenter node (but again I don't understand what purpose this
serves.) The schedules point to the data center node and the Vmhosts and those
will not change. Is there anything else that needs changing?

And of course, the BIG question. Will these changes force a new FULL or will
the incrementals just continue.

For what it's worth, my VME version is 7.1.3 and my TSM server is version
7.1.1.300 running on AIX 7.1.

Re: TDP4VE: How to delete old backups of excluded volumes

2015-10-09 Thread David Ehresman
On VMware backups, delete filespace will delete all of the backups for the VM,
not just the newly excluded volumes.

Excluding the Hard Disks will make current backups for those disks inactive and
they will age out based on your retention policy. I do not think you can
delete them otherwise without deleting all the backups for the VM and starting
over.

Hi David, thanks for your reply.

on each TSM server it monitors (it's ok to say TSM, I'm not IBM). This
password would need to be the same across all the TSM servers. I think
that's going to be the problem for you but I could be wrong.

But the admin picks the name. Couldn't I create one account for the HQ OC
instance that connects to all the servers and one account per branch office
that connects only to the local branch office instance?

I don't know why that would not work.

Hoping to get upgraded to tsm server 7.1.x within the next month.
At that time, we are considering changing our storage strategy to all random
disk pool.

This because we cannot do a file level restore from a vmware backup from
sequencial media, (be it tape or disk).

Has anyone done this, or is there a better way?

Looking for guideance and others' experience.

Query Activedata

2015-08-03 Thread David Ehresman
Is there a way to query the size of the activedata per node/per
storagegroup/per tsm server? I'm not asking the size of an activedata
storagepool, there is none, but the size of the currently active, as opposed to
inactive, data TSM is storing.

Andy is correct that in a select from the backups tables the '/dev' will be the
filespace_name and not the hl_name. But the '/dev' should show in the q
filespace.

Did you restart dsmcad and/or dsmc sched after updateing the dsm.sys file? Is
the dsm.sys in the default location or is it possible the backup is using a
different dsm.sys? What level of TSM clinet and what level of Linux?

Hi Eric,

Besides the items you have highlighted so far (dsmc q opt, select * from
backups), what makes you think this file system is not being backed up? Are
there not TSM related logs (dsmsched.log) you could look at? Also, what does
the admin command q filespace kl1241m3 show you? I would think with virtual
mount points, /dev would be the file system name, not the high level name...

We are currently encrypting our data as it is being written to tape. The
auditors want to know how the encryption keys are managed. All I can find is
that the keys are managed by the Tivoli Storage Manager.

Does anyone have any documentation that explains how the keys are managed and
what keeps someone from decrypting a tape that is lost or stolen?

TSM VE 7.1.2 Mount Proxy Pairs

2015-06-19 Thread David Ehresman
The 7.1.2 doc indicates I need Proxy Pairs for VE mount and instant restore.
But I can't find the doc that tells me how to set them up. I appear to need a
Windows and a Linux server. Do they have to be dedicated? Can I/should I use
a data mover as one of the proxies? Do I need to install anything on the proxy
servers? Has anyone set these up and willing to offer some advice?

Re: server out of storage space when really not missing vmware backups

2015-06-08 Thread David Ehresman
Maxscratch defines how many scratch volumes you can have in a storagepool.
When you reach maxscratch, assuming you do not have volumes predefined, you are
by definition out of data storage space regardless of how much space is in your
filesystem.

Tsm server 6.2.5
TDP for vmware 6.4

I have the vmware data pool defined as a sequencial file pool, to facilitate
migration.

However, last night the server claimed it was out of data storage space, but
there is 18% of a 14 tb pool free.

I checked, and the only limit reached was maxscratch.

Is there a good way around this?

We want to migrate to server 7.x, but could not get an install failure resolved
on RHEL 6.5 for server version 7.1.1.

I have increased maxscratch, but this cannot go on indefinitely.

Markus,
We add '-NB' to the label in vSphere of the VMs we do not wish to back up.
Then, we specify '-VM=*-NB' in the schedule options.

For disks, we can exclude individual disks by just adding a line to the
 optfile looking like

 exclude.vmdisk vm1 Hard Disk 2
 exclude.vmdisk vm2 Hard Disk 2

works fine, one disk per line and readable.

If i want to exclude vms, I have to put them all in one line looking like

 DOMAIN.VMFULL
 vmhost=host1;-VM=vm7*,vm1,vm2,vm6,vm101,vm30,vm29,vm465,vm9,vm879,vm102,vm101;VM=7;VM=vm7657

which is not easily readable and hard to maintain as it grows and changes.
I know about the GUI, but then you always have to logon to the system for
each change, plus the exclude for disks is not avaliable.
The client will not accept more than one domain.vmfull statement or a cr,
all has to be in one line.
The options also don´t seem to be available in the client option set as
options, which would also be a neat solution.
Has anyone made a more readable syntax work, or would this be a case for a
 RFE?

 Kind regards,

Re: TSM/CMS

Rob,

At our shop TSM/VE, TSM for DB, and TSM for Email nodes outnumber our
traditional B/A nodes. The CMS function is only marginally useful if it only
works for B/A nodes because I have to go to several hundred machines and
install the code and customize OpCenter. If it worked with data movers, I
could install the code on a dozen machines and review the logs of hundreds of
VMs. Very much more bang for the buck.

ANS9397W
TSM application protection cannot protect this machine. Virtual machine 'VM'

How is it possible? I get this error for every single one of my Windows

I have troubleshooted VSS, and there are no errors. In fact, I can even
see in the logs that VSS snapshots are properly firing off as commanded by

Does anyone have any insight into what could be the reason?

Thanks in advance for your time in considering my question.

We had a customer who installed his application on d: (with windows on
c:).
No files missed or excluded from the backup. His d: drive crashed and he
restored it. Again no files missed or excluded. Everyone expected
success.
Sadly his application could not start.

 Why?

Part of his .exe files ended up as part of the system state backup (in
this
case .exe files where related to defined services). And we found loads of
 others doing the same.

So simply excluding system state from backup might be not so smart as
windows seem to be putting more and more stuff into system state even if
its not related directly to windows and os drive.

Each backup session backs up some control information, and that information is
restored for use during the next backup. (You can see the restores happening
if you watch the server during the backup, or if you look in the accounting
info.)

I'm just guessing, but I suspect that the data unavailable on server is
because it can't restore that control info.
Perhaps some volumes in your disk pool are offline, or the control information
has migrated off to tape?

If the latter, you need to put these keywords in the dsm.opt on your datamover:

VMMCyour-mgmt-class-for-data-goes-here
VMCTLMC your-mgmt-class-for-control-info-goes-here

The control info mgmt. class should point to a small disk pool that can't
migrate to tape.

Re: TSM for VE 7.1.1.1 exclude vm question

2015-02-24 Thread David Ehresman
You need to put the VM excludes either in each of datamover dsm.opt or put them
in the schedule that the datamover is associated with. We put them in the
schedule because I can update them without logging onto each of the datamovers.

Subject: [ADSM-L] TSM for VE 7.1.1.1 exclude vm question

New to VE, looked through the docs and still unsure if this is supported:
Can I use a Client Option Set to centralize all the specific excludes of VM's,
or am I limited to putting them in each Datamover's opt files?
If yes, can someone send me a working example?

What is the select statement syntax for concatenating

Re: TSM rant

2015-01-29 Thread David Ehresman
I've been admin TSM since the V3 days if memory serves, and sometimes it
doesn't so much anymore. I've had a lot less problems with TSM since the move
to DB2. We are now at 7.1.1. I do not know DB2 and have not had a need to
learn it. We back up about 400 servers, 350 VMs, 100 databases, and an
Exchange systems which is just big. FWIW, we do not do software (TSM) dedup.

Subject: [ADSM-L] TSM rant

Hi,

I don't get it.

Back in the good oldays of TSM 5, you could have a normal server (basic CPU, 8
GB RAM, normal disks) and run TSM without any problem.
The command line interface was nice, the web based GUI was basic, but you
could do everything with it.
You needed some extra scripts of software for decent monitoring, but overall,
TSM was a nice, not-to-difficult product that I enjoyed to use.
TSM 5.5.3.0: all binaries togehter = 30 MB.

The database backup was so small that using tapes from the library for it was
overkill. Just do a backup to disk and sync the data remote, or put it on a
small 4mm tape, or put it on a USB stick. It was even so small that you could
sync it over the internet!

But then came DB2 and dedup and all other 'nice' features...

The small server that you had needed suddenly 64 GB of memory. And SSD's.
And at least 4 new CPU's.

And as administrator, you also need a deep dive in DB2. One ANRD after an
other pops up. Fix? Sometimes an upgrade. But most of the time you need a
DB2 guru to follow the instructions on the IBM website. Wasn't there a
promise that DB2 will run onder the hood and that as a TSM administrator you
don't needed a DB2 prompt?

Do you know what happens yesterday? After getting tired of ANRD messages
regarding dedup killing our offsite backup, we did a fresh install of the
latest TSM server on a linux box and restart all over.
But strange, our monitoring setup was always showing that there was no TSM
process running? After some digging, we found this:
select * from processes: ANR2034E SELECT: No match found using this criteria.

But: q proc is working fine and shows all running processes.

WTF?!?!? This is a fresh new install!

IBM, what are you doing with this great product?

TSM is way behind compared to other backup products: dedup, cloud backup,
monitoring, reporting, data sync, ...
Yes, you can do this with TSM, but will it work? Will it blow up your
database? Will you be able to do a restore?

We have about 40 TSM installations we maintain for customers. Not all of them
have issues, but I can not promise that in the next few years they are not
switched over to an other backup solution.

Sorry for the rant, but TSM is loosing a fan :(

This sounds very much like a problem with either the tapes or the tape library.

You've got to free up one or more scratch tape(s) somehow. Either that
or decide to write your TSM DB backups somewhere else, such as SAN.
There is no way around this.

How many Full DB backups are you keeping? Is that more than you need? If
so, see the DELETE VOLHISTORY command to get rid of old backups and
release scratch tapes. A typical thing is to run a scheduled DELETE
VOLHIST TODAY-8 or something like that after a successful rc=0 full
database backup. Always make sure you're keeping your most recent FULL
database backup and all the incremental backups after it.

Do your own inventory of tapes in your tape library, and make sure you
can identify what each of them is used for. They will either be VOLUMEs
or they'll be listed in the Volume History File for DB backups etc. You

q libv LIBRARY
will show all of the tapes in the library. If your tape pools use tapes from
scratch then look for a tape that is private with no last use. These are
sometimes orphaned tapes. You can verify if they are orphaned by q vol and
searching q drm for the tape.
When I find an orphan I re-label the tape, but be careful, an error can delete
data.

I tried:
label libv xx search=yes checkin=scratch labels=b volr=A00560L5,A00561L5
same results.

Also, the maxscr on all our copy pools are fine. (difference of allowed and

I have tried status=bulk in the past, on a tape I had issues with earlier in

has ever used it. So I'm hesitant to use 'bulk'.

checkin=scratch labels=b overwrite=y ANR0984I Process 120 for LABEL LIBVOLUME
started in the BACKGROUND at 09:29:14.
ANR8799I LABEL LIBVOLUME: Operation for library XX started as process 120.
ANR8801I LABEL LIBVOLUME process 120 for library XX completed; 0 volume(s)
labeled, 0 volume(s) checked-in.
ANR0985I Process 120 for LABEL LIBVOLUME running in the BACKGROUND completed
with completion state SUCCESS at 09:29:19.

0 volumes, but finished successfully and when I query the library XX, the
new tape does not show in the list.

I have also tried this command:
CHECKIN LIBVOLUME xx SEARCH=YES CHECKLABEL=YES status=scratch WAITTIME=0
VOLLIST=A00L5.
Results are the same.

I have also tried putting the tapes on the door of the machine and not doing
the 'insert media'...again results on the same.
We just received 30 new tapes last week and I've tried about 10 of them so far.
I have used the cleaning tape and did the clean process and also rebooted the
DS3512.same results afterwards.

Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Update stg STOAGEPOOL_NAME MIGPRocess=XXX where XXX is how many threads you
want for your migration process.

We are backing up our vmware environment (approximately 110 vms), using tsm for
ve 6.4.2 tsmserver 6.2.5 under redhat 6.1.

The backup destination is disk. Trouble is all data is owned by the datacenter
node; consequently, migration has only one stream.

I do not currently have enough tape drives to run directly to tape.
Is there a solution I have missed?

That makes sense because I collocate all my VME backups by filespace.

Hi David,
Your primary storagepool has to be Collocate=filespace and I guess the
target too if you want multiple threads.

Subject: [ADSM-L] SQL for highest volume label in library

Hi TSM-ers!
Does anybody know a SQL statement to retrieve the highest volume label of all
tapes in a library? Is it possible with one single SQL query?
Thanks for any help in advance!

TSM 7.1.1 on AIX

2014-12-10 Thread David Ehresman
Anyone upgraded to TSM 7.1.1 on AIX? I'm getting the following out of the
installer:

Loading fixes...
Validating package prerequisites...
.
Finding compatible package groups...

= IBM Installation Manager Install Location

Incompatible existing package groups:
 1. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager

ERROR: Package IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server is already installed in this
package group.

Selected group id: IBM Tivoli Storage Manager
Selected location: /opt/tivoli/tsm
Selected architecture: 64-bit

 B. Back, C. Cancel

While I continue to wait to hear from Tivoli Level II, any ideas on how to get
the installer to install?

David
