Re: Problems with DocAve SharePoint TDP Restore

2011-09-27 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Hi Kirk,
Usually the source of this oh-so-informative error message has to do with the
widespread elevation of rights for the Agent user. You might try logging into
the destination db as the account and see if you can create a database.
Also-- if you are doing an in-place restore of a deleted site, it may not have
the requisite framework to create the site into. DocAve is picky about what
you select (like the . directory for example to restore-- it will allow you
to pull out pieces that require destination site configuration to accept. Did
you select the whole platform backup to restore, or a (sub)site deeper in the
hierarchy? It is picky about that too.
Read the documentation carefully-- it will contain the caveats of how to do the
restores, and the how-tos are very literal-- meaning the instructions show
exactly how to do what they are demonstrating, but you shouldn't extrapolate
processes from the examples.
Do you happen to know if there has been a Redbook put out on TDP for
DB/SharePoint yet?

Good luck, HTH

Subject: [ADSM-L] Problems with DocAve SharePoint TDP Restore

Hi all,

We have some work currently underway to try and get the SharePoint TDP for TSM
(aka DocAve) installed and working. We've downloaded and installed
v6.1.4 from Passport Advantage and have been able to configure and run
successful backups.

However on testing the restore process, it seems that we're getting an error
message - see below. This message has been generated when trying to carry out a
site recovery, having deleted the site from within SharePoint
2010 in order to test the restore process.

09/26/2011 15:47:06 Type: (Site Collection) Path:
(http://mysite.example.ac.uk:100) , Status: (Successful)
09/26/2011 15:47:06 Type: (Site) Path: (http://mysite.example.ac.uk:100/.)
, Status: (Failed)
An error occurred while restoring a site. Url:..Object reference not set to an
instance of an object.
Run Time: 00:00:26
Statistical result: 1 MB data, 1(0) site collections, 1(1) sites, 0(0) lists,
0(0) folders, 0(0) items.

When the error message is produced, the correct domain appears in the error.

Has anyone else seen this error message before? I've seen a similar message
when searching on adsm.org but not the same error message. There doesn't seem
to be much other information available within the DocAve software itself, but
it does look as though it is trying and failing to carry out an action on the
database. It seems as though it is trying to connect to the database that has
been deleted however I will have to ask the DBA to confirm that part tomorrow.
The account has been given sa access on the database as a test and the error is
still generated.

TSM version this is going to is v6.2.2 running on Linux however I don't think
that is particularly relevant.

Any help gratefully received!

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Experiences with Teradata

Rick--

I wanted to explore it, so as to leverage our Enterprise TSM investment.
However, it is pricey and if you don't have your disks on SAN, you won't get
the through-put. We currently use a little SpectraLogic library with two
Ultrium drives. And, FWIW, the Teradata technical folks weren't very keen on
TSM. They basically said-- we will only support the ARCMain component, TSM
doesn't seem to work as well as NetVault

See if they will let you do a POC before you buy!

MS Server 2003, cluster running out of space...Compression TSM baclient

2010-08-04 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Good Morning TSMers!

We are running really low on space on our clustered user drive. I was
thinking we could do the MS compression on the entire drive to get some
space till we move to DFS on 2008.

One of my co-workers said that the reason that this hasn't already been
tried is that there is some kind of issue with TSM-either the backups or
the restores don't work right.

I am unable to confirm/deny issue via Google... Anyone have anything
definitive on this? Point me where to hunt for documentation??

I'm not coming across anything on IBM's Tivoli portal, and the issue
doesn't ring any bells for me.

Exit and restart your psexec session; copy/edit dsm.opt and
Then use scripts to install the scheduler and acceptor (in that order)

dsmcutil install sched /name:IBM TSM Scheduler

/optfile:c:\progra~1\tivoli\tsm\baclient\dsm.opt
/errorlog:c:\progra~1\tivoli\tsm\baclient\dsmerror.log

/optfile:c:\progra~1\tivoli\tsm\baclient\dsm.opt /password:XX

Re: Restoring LARGE server

2009-12-10 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Zoltan:

Have you looked at the server-side of this situation? You can optimize
for backup or restore but not usually both. While you may slam TBs to
the server in a short window of time, you usually are increasing the
window on the restore-- unless you've thought about it when
architecting.

Do you have the restore waiting for a bunch of mount points?

Would it work to try to use the TSM server to create backup sets for
chunks of the client's data? (Never tried this, but it always sounded
like an intriguing concept with the backup set idea.) Or to attempt
parallel restores on data that doesn't reside on the same tape?

Have you looked to see if collocation on the stgpool is an issue? If you
are single-streaming from one tape, can you connive a way to set up a
diskpool with that clients' data to prestage the restore? Do a copy
stgpool (if on tape) into a bunch of disks that you can spray the data
back onto the client?

If none of this is helpful, I apologize and I wish you the best of luck!
I am on the client side of things TSM now, so I may not have a clue
anymore! (or any less...)

thanks!

AFAIK, NQR isn't something you can pick and choose - if it was, I
 would.

 From the book:

When you enter an unrestricted wildcard source file specification on
 the
restore command and do not specify any of the options: inactive,
 latest,
pick, fromdate, todate, or |volinformation, the client uses a no query
restore method for restoring files and directories from the server.
 This
method is called no query restore because instead of querying the
 server
for each object to be restored, a single restore request is sent to
the
server. In this case, the server returns the files and directories to
 the
client without further action by the client. The client merely accepts
 the
data coming from the server and restores it to the destination named
on
 the restore command.

What is killing me is having to restore inactive file (the server
corruption completely killed a big directory that the OS says is now
empty so the TSM backup marked everything inactive).

In my opinion, these restrictions for NQR plus the issue of not having
 an
equivalent of MEMORYEFFICIENT for restores, is a major
problem/weakness
 in
 TSM.

I have spent the past 3+ days (and will be working throughout the
 weekend)
to restore these files. I keep having to drill further and further
 into
each directory structure to guess which directory I can attempt to
restore. Every time I click on a directory and attempt a restore, the
process runs for 30-minutes transferring 2G or more of meta-data
before
 it
eventually fails on insufficient memory or I am lucky enough to pick
 one
that restores. Then I have to start all over again, keep track of
 where I
am and what I was able to restore, drill further down,
rinse-lather-repeat! Besides the 22M objects, there is 700GB of data
 to
 process/wander through.

What good is having 50M objects of backups if I can't restore them in
a
 reasonable fashion?

Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] required VSS hotfix 934016

My ears are burning.

In the course of diagnosing VSS-related problems, the solution very
often
involved installing one or more Windows hotfixes -- enough so, that we
asked Microsoft VSS support engineers if they have any minimum, baseline
maintenance/patch levels that they would recommend any VSS user to
install
for preventive maintenance. The hotfix roll-ups described in the
technote
are what Microsoft advised. The objective of the pre-req is best
out-of-the-box experience with TSM; that is, to improve the likelihood
of
successful backups.

We do not programmatically enforce the pre-reqs; that is, TSM won't test
for the presence of the hotfixes and refuse to run if they are not
installed. Some users run just fine without the hotfixes (there is no
list
of conditions I am aware of that specify under what conditions you will
or
will not have problems). But if you report a system state backup issue
(for
example) and the symptoms point to an error in VSS, then installing the
hotfixes is typically among the first things we ask. It is my experience
that when Microsoft support engineers have been engaged to assist in
troubleshooting, this is their position as well since they prefer to
shoot
off the known baseline. (NOTE: I do not speak for Microsoft or cite any
Microsoft policy, official or otherwise; I am only speaking from my own
personal experience and observations.)

It should be noted that these hotfixes are pre-reqs only if you intend
to
use the TSM client to perform operations that involve VSS, though I
think
most users do system state backup.

Which one is right-- do I apply 934016 because IBM says it's
required
or do I wait until a production server experiences the specific
problem?

On one hand, some users prefer to not put on any maintenance unless they
have to. If you choose not to install them and system state backup runs
fine, then I certainly will not argue with success. On the other hand,
many
users like to keep all their systems at consistent service levels, so if
they install it once (due to a problem, say, on even just one machine),
they'll install it everywhere. On the third hand, other users prefer to
avoid even the first occurrence of a problem, in which case they'll want
to
put the pre-reqs on in advance.

So the direct answer to your question is: it's up to you! I just hope
the
above background information is useful.

Andy

The Technote implies that 934016 is required.

Which one is right-- do I apply 934016 because IBM says it's required
or do I wait until a production server experiences the specific problem?

HELP! wrapping my non-dba brain around MS SQL, SQL server management studio and TSM TDP for Dbs...

2009-02-23 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Hi guys and gals

I am trying to find definitive documentation (or at least authoritative)
on how to set up a SQL server that is MSCS SQL clustered, full
recovery mode, and has transactional logging on to run nicely with TDP.
I had the TDP running and working, but the DBAs were using the mgmt
studio to manage SQL, and I am guessing that some of the routines that
they were using for restores were calling for t-logs that TSM/TDP had
also done something with-or that is the best explanation I could come up
with. (Let me emphasize that I am not a SQL DBA). I told them I'd turn
off the TDP and they could resume their testing. (Bear in mind, I don't
think they ever read any of the TDP for SQL documentation I provided for
them-I don't think they want to learn another tool). They had no more
issues with missing t-logs (or whatever it was- I asked for logs and or
error messages, but I never got any). Then, they wanted me to stop SQL
and do cold backups of the filesystems. So I created the pre post
schedule commands that off lined the clustered SQL services, performed
the cold filesystem backup, and then brought them back up. Now it seems
that with production (this is pre-prod) they don't want the down time,
so we are back to the TDP. I asked them if just backing up the exports
(right word) or the .BAKs from the Mgmt studio would be enough and I was
told that they didn't use the .BAK files for that. Or something else
like that that I didn't fully understand (admittedly, I got a little
aggravated and asked them why they were even creating them thenbut
did I mention I am not a DBA???)

If I use the TDP-should I just do a full hot nightly (and they can
manage the t-logs and roll-forward themselves with the SQL Mgmt. Studio)
or do I do the difffull and backup the logs with the /truncate=noor
what

2008-11-19 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Thank you all for your replies.

Hmm, this is starting to sound like a bummer. The DBAs are using Oracle
ODI with SQL Express... in production ...for long term... from Teradata
data I was looking at the errors in the dsmerror.log from the
baclient.and began to wonder. and I made the mistake of asking
if they wanted to be able to recover if something happened to their
server.

There is a maintenance job to export the db. And it is backed up. I
think I'll just call it good and never mention it again ;-)

The interesting thing about that I found is that if the SQLServer
service is
running, the TSM client doesn't even see the MDF/LDF files for the
active
databases. I mean they just plain don't show up in the list with little
X's
that say they are excluded. You stop the service and the files are
there.

Had a similar experience with the latest Oracle and their VSS component.
But
they at least showed up in the QUERY INCLEXCL list as operating
system.

Hi Lisa

The only way I can think of would be to stop the SQL services and then
backup the files up with the BA client. You may need to use an old
version
of the BA client though, as I've read reports that the 5.5 client
excludes
mdf and ldf files regardless of any includes in the dsm.opt file.

Re: TSM for SharePoint (DocAve)

2008-10-16 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Hi Guido,

Brand new VM, purposed solely as the Media Server  the DocAve Server;
TSM baclient level 5.5.1.0, with the DocAve version of 4.5.3 incr works
fine. DocAve Client installed on SharePoint server.

Installed from CD following the IBM OEM instructions-- the install
seems to be done correctly. I have an Active Directory service account
set up and all the tests return okay. The service account is a Farm
Admin, and in the local Administrators group on the DocAve Media Server,
the SQL box the SharePoint box.

But-- I ran a Site backup, which said it ran successfully, with 0MBs
backed up. I am unclear on how TSM fits into the mix. Do I have to set
up local DASD storage for the Media Server and then does the baclient do
the backup at the OS level? The only references to TSM I can find in
the documentation is how to set up the management class, and to have
nodename defined on TSM server and that TSM has index files on the local
Media Server file system. It is silent on whether I have to set up a
network share on the DocAve Client to backup to the Media Server how I
should configure the storage settings on the Media Server. It talks
about what I can do, but not what I must do to set it up correctly for
TSM.

I have found some documentation by IBM's Dave Daun-- it is a PowerPoint
presentation that's helpful. From what I can tell the IBM OEM
documentation is the Control Panel Module and the Data Protection Module
out of DocAve's User Guide. I also found some documentation on the IBM

Look in the TSM client manual for Windpws; besides read/write access,
the
user has to have specific other WINdows admin rights in order to run a
backup.

When I setup TDP for Oracle and used RMAN jobs , the transaction logs
were archives ( archive deletes) and you needed to also schedule an
RMAN job to inactivate the logs and synchronize between RMAN and
TDP/TSM. It's been a while and my details may be fuzzy; but it
doesn't
seem that there is an equivalent in MSSQL. And the logs are backed up,
not archived. Should I be scheduling inactivate jogs and do I have to
worry about duplicate transaction log names and a limit on the number
of
versions kept for the backups of the transaction logs? Sorry if I am
slightly incoherent-we go live on a project over the weekend, and (as
usual) the backups were an afterthought, so I am kind of short on
sleep
right now. I know you guys have been there done that.

First, Unlimited is excessive for everything. However, we have
Unlimited set for # of versions, but we only keep the backups for 30
days for our regular node, 5 years for our monthly node, and 10 years
for our quarterly nodes when it comes to SQL server.

The key settings for SQL Server are unlimited versions then limit the #
of Days, this way you can run regular log backups and actually recover.

I have Del- and to me they were silent on the inactivation (it's quite
different than Oracle/RMAN). The question on the management class
parameters was because the TSM Admins determined that they didn't need
to follow the Redbook's recommendations on unlimited/unlimited and I
am
unable to provide hard cold reasons why they should follow the
Redbook.

 What they gave me:

Created Policy Domain , Set up management class Standard.
For
now (until business side gets back to us with retention) set up the MC
with 0 days between backups, 7 versions of each file kept, 30 days to
keep inactive versions, 1 deleted version, keep last file f! or 60
 days.
Set up separate collocation group for X.

 My comments regarding:

How does this MC affect backup of the SQL transaction logs (since it
is
backup and not archive)? I am concerned that the 7 versions existing

1 deleted may cause issues doing a point-in-time restore (i.e.- the
log
that needs to be restored rolled off TSM now the point in time
 recovery fails).

Regarding metadata being retained on disk vs. on tape. We may not be
able to query database objects for restore if the metadata is on tape.
This is another concern I have regarding only one STANDARD management
 class.

 What I asked for:

I have relied heavily on the IBM Redbook Backing up Microsoft SQL
 Server
with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (SG-24-6148-01) and its recommended
 setup
 1. I suggest you collocate by node or filesystem, depending on
size
of filesystems maxsize of the tapes--but if you can meet the
business-side's RTO ! without collocation, then whatever works.
 2. Separate storage pools (stgp) be set up to backup the SQL
server
 environment. (Redbook pg 81)
2.a Dedicated disk storage pools for the primary stgps for the SQL
 DB servers the TDPs
DRSQLDBDISK- primary pool for DB Data
DRSQLLOGDISK- primary pool for DB logs
  DRSQLDISKCOPY-copypool for DRSQLLOGDISK DRSQLMETADISK)
DRSQLTAPECOPY- copy pool for DRSQLDBDISK in tape library
 REUSEDELAY=2
  DR_DRIMVDL- DR offsite tapes REUSEDELAY=2
DRSQLMETADISK-this is for metadata when using VSS. However, a
system utilizing transaction log backup without using VSS staging was
not illustrated in the Redbook, so it's unclear we'd need this for the
 legacy backup solution.
The documentation discusses ! when working with VSS backups
 another
separate disk stgp be set up for the metadata. The problem with this
is
that in the Redbook team's test environment, they assume all clustered
servers would be utilizing VSS-either staging, offloaded or hardware.
I
think that this is something we should look into-given the projected
data volume and the RTOs-perhaps even the backup window. We could do
 the
staging or off-loaded now-we just need to install the IBM TSM for Copy
 Services. And some more configuration.
 3. Separate Policy Domain (PD) (Redbook ppg 83 84)
 3.a Management Class (MC)
*DRSQLDAILY- for the daily weekly backups with retention policy
based
 on date- VEREXISTS=nolimit VERDELETED=nolimit RETEXTRA=35 RETONLY=90
 **Default MC
*DRSQL_LONG- monthly backups archives (shouldn't need to include
meta
logs if the archive/(full) backup is done correctly-right? I would
also suggest that the scheduled job! s use dates in the name of the
backup for the archives, so we don't run into issues with version
 retention for clarity) VEREXISTS=2 VERDELETED=1

Hi Lisa,

SQL Server log truncation is different than Oracle and even
Exchange Server. Just because you truncate the logs, doesn't necessarily
mean that you recapture the physical disk space.
Please read this article, it explains it fully. It is a good read:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa174524(SQL.80).aspx

You will see this statement:
Shrinking a log is dependent on first truncating the log.

Data Protection for SQL will truncate the logs (unless you tell it not
to).
If you are concerned about shrinking, the article above should help you.

Thanks,

Del

 Hi Everyone!

If I have a particular file system, /u01, that had been receiving the
default management class, but I would like it to now have the mc365
management class assigned to it in the include/exclude list, will all
files backed up under the /u01 file system be rebound to the mc365
management class tonight when it does it's incremental backup? I just
wanted to make sure that I was 100% sure about this. Thanks so much!

Rebinding associates a file or a logical volume image with a new
 management class.
Backups of files are bound again to a different management class in
the
following conditions. In each condition, the files (active and
 inactive)
are not bound again until the next backup.
You specify a different management class in an Include statement to
 change
the management class for the file. The backups are managed based on
the
old management class until you run another backup.
Your administrator deletes the management class from your active
policy
set. The default management class is used to manage the backup
versions
when you back up the file again.
Your administrator assigns your client node to a different policy
 domain
and the active policy set in that domain does not have a management
 class
with the same name. The default management class for the new policy
 domain
is used to manage the backup versions.

TSM client MIB for SNMP

2008-08-13 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Alphabet soup this morning!

I know that SNMP and logging events to receivers is documented for the
TSM server. Since I am not a TSM server admin, I'd like to not have to
mess with that and see if I can do something client-side.

We use Orion SolarWinds to monitor our network and devices and I am
hoping there is a MIB that the TSM clients have (or can get hold of) so
that we can poll whether managed servers have the tsm client installed
on it. I can't find any info regarding SNMP or MIBs for the TSM
clientscan anyone help me out?

I am trying to find a solution to the question-- are all our servers
being backed up? Since all our servers are by definition in
SolarWinds, I'd like to be able to show and use the reporting
capabilities of SolarWinds to query our servers and show that they are
or are not backed up (or do or do not have the TSM client installed on
them).

thanks!

Anyone doing TSM backups for a 3M Motor Vehicle Solution?

2008-07-29 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
My employer (not being cryptic- just trying to avoid Google hits ;-) is
in the middle of a project involving 3M's Motor Vehicle Solution. I was
just brought into the process, and am now figuring out how to architect
a TSM backup solution for the system. In doing some online research, I
saw press releases of other States and governmental agencies that have
adopted the system, or modules from the system.

Since I am behind the curve on this project, I was hoping that somewhere
in ADSM-L land there were folks that have familiarity with the system
and the TSM backups-for example 3M, IA, MT. I know that this list is
heavy on governmental, institutional, and large business TSM
installations and was hoping I could start up a conversation with a TSM
admin on how their backup solution was implemented.

In advance,
thanks!

(feel free to reply privately-I know that some agencies like to fly
below radar when at all possible)

FW: [ADSM-L] TSM upgrade to 5.5.1

2008-07-21 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
I am trying to install the downlevel console on the windows TSM SERVER host.

The error message I receive is: The Tivoli Storage Manager Console can not be
installed with the Tivoli Storage Manager Server. Remove the TSM Server and
try again.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to poke around some more? I don't see
any way to de-couple the installation of the console from the server or just
remove the 5.5.1.0 console. Both are on a test box. Worst come to worst,
I'll create a VM to run the down-level console to run the Op Rept against the
TSM test server. Wanting to test some tweaking of the report (and not on a
production TSM server).

Thanks Bill!

thanks!

Sure you can. Just download the TSMCON package from the Windows server
maintenance directory on the FTP server. Just needs a Winders box.

If you use TSM operational reporting, then you need to install an older
version of the TSM Management console such as 5.5.0.3, otherwise it will
fail to generate any reports.

I would not consider this a major bug, more of an annoyance.

Hi Phil,

Try running Ops reporting on your test server ;)

how exactly (e.g., using which command) do you do that?

How severe would you consider that problem?

samples/drafts of SLA questionnaires for backup retention?

2008-07-14 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Hello all!

We are going to absorb a complex contractor-prepared system (with 20
servers) into our backups. Management has requested that I put together
some questions for the contractors to ensure we have all the bases
covered for backup/archive retention disaster recovery.

I have been googling for examples on the web (I know I have seen them
before, but now I can't come across them again). Do any of you have
anything already written that you would share with me? Please? You can
email to me privately, if you prefer it not be on the listserv.

Or if you know of some TSM installation's public side that I can peruse,
I'd appreciate that too!

thanks!

I thought I'd try to refine the requestmaybe get a taker or two.

What questions do you ask an application provider when they request TSM
services-an analogy I can see here is in academia-New NSF grant money
for study, includes hw/sw. Prof has oodles of grad students writing
apps to gather data. Have different servers on Campus resources.
Professor wants to utilize central backups for his/her new toys. What
questions do you ask of the Prof to ensure you have met his b/a
requirements, and recovery time objective and recovery point objective-
on all of the servers all of his data or do you bother?

thanks!

Solid database and TSM backups

2008-07-10 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Good Morning all,

Does anyone have any servers running solid databases that are backed up
by TSM? I just found out we now need to ensure recoverability of this
IVR system. The contactor provided information on backups via Symantec
Intelligent Disaster Recovery. We are a TSM shop and have been directed
to back up to TSM. Which , being perfectly literal, I can do-but I am
sure that what is meant recover via TSM.

Anyone been down this road before? Any and all assistance, thoughts,
experience would be appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Hi,

No, you can not limit the bandwidth within Windows for one application.
However some application have their own setting for throttling ex.
Backup Exec.

By design TSM client is set to use as much resources it needs during
backup ex. cpu, memory and network.
Regarding network traffic, IBM reluctant refuse to understand and
implement the consept of QoS, Qualtity of Service, in TSM.

Thinking of just one server/one OS when you try to implement a
restriction of how much network trafic TSM should be allowed to generate
doesn't scale very well. You could talk to your network guys and ask
them to implement QoS on port 1500/1501 on their routers and make sure
that TSM only uses thoose two ports.

I had updated client code and included the lvsa module in the msiexec
install statement. I had the stanza
 snapshotproviderimagenone
in my dsm.opt file. I thought that's what was wrong, because an
identically set up server didn't have that in it's dsm.opt file. So I
 removed it.

The error was still there this morning. I just ran a OS backup of the
system state and it worked fine. Further investigation needed.
I'd like to know what the difference is between these two
backups.--i.e. what is the diff between a full, TSM backup and an
 incremental ??

Look in the dsm.opt file, and see if it is using VSS to backup system state
objects, as opposed to backing up system state as a filesystem--

See if you have snapshotproviderimage specified as none-- if so remove it.

I'll bow to anyone who is actually familiar with Windows, but my guess would be
that things under the Repair directory should inherently be excluded by the
Exclude list inherently contributed to TSM by Windows, as revealed in 'dsmc q
inclexcl' where such entries are listed as contributed by Operating System,
and constitute what I believe to be called Component Registry file list. If
so, this would suggest to me that something has gone wrong with the Registry
contents on that W2000 system, ostensibly in the
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control
\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup registry subkey. I would compare that system's
'dsmc q inclexcl' with that on another W2000 system in your shop which is at
the same SP level.

Re: AW: [ADSM-L] Anyone write/develop a wmi query for win32_processor? (value units TSM licensing)

2008-05-28 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Yes, thanks-- that's what I'd tried. However-- it doesn't accurately count
core/cpus-- you have to install a hotfix for the WMI properties to actually
reflect reality :-(

---from the KB article---
Until Vista was released, the various Windows operating systems were unable to
identify the number of physical, logical and multicore processors.
Vista added the following new properties to WMI that provide for:
Number of physical processors
Number of logical processors
Number of cores
Even though Inventory for Windows provides a 'cores' attribute in the
inv_aex_hw_cpu table and hardware inventory will attempt to correctly populate
this column. However, processor information is still not complete.
Server 2003 and XP do not have the above properties in WMI, by default.
Microsoft has created two hotfixes that update WMI on these OSes - one per OS.
These hotfixes are available only by request from Microsoft and can be found at:
XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936235/
2003: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932370/
Custom Inventory can be implemented to capture the correct processor
information as provided by the above properties.
Microsoft provides the following information regarding these hotfixes:
WMI properties before applying the hotfix
Win32_ComputerSystem
The NumberOfLogicalProcessors property is not available.
The NumberOfProcessors property returns the number of logical processors that
are available on the system.
Win32_Processor
The number of Win32_Processor instances that are returned is equal to the
number of logical processors that are available on the system.
The NumberOfCores property is not available.
The NumberOfLogicalProcessors property is not available.
WMI Properties after applying the hotfix
Win32_ComputerSystem
The NumberOfProcessors property returns the number of physical processors that
are available on the system.
The NumberOfLogicalProcessors property returns the number of logical processors
that are available on the system.
Win32_Processor
The number of NumberOfLogicalProcessors instances that are returned is equal to
the number of logical processors that are available on the system.
The NumberOfCores property returns the number of cores that are available on
the system.
The number of Win32_Processor instances that are returned is equal to the
number of physical processors that are available on the system.
To determine whether hyperthreading is enabled for the processor, compare the
value of the NumberOfCores property to the value of the
NumberOfLogicalProcessors property. If hyperthreading is enabled in the BIOS
for the processor, the value of the NumberOfCores property is less than the
value of the NumberOfLogicalProcessors property.
For example, assume that a dual-processor system contains two processors that
are each enabled for hyperthreading. This system can run four threads or four
programs at the same time. In this case, the value of the NumberOfCores
property is 2, and the value of the NumberOfLogicalProcessors property is 4.

Hi,

Have you tried Scriptomatic from M$?
It generates VBScript, Perl, Jscript or Python Code and outputs the results of
the WMI queries in a DOS box, plain Text to Notepad, HTML, Excel or XML.
You can then change the code to your liking.
It even lets you query a list of computers with a single run.

Does anyone have experience with querying the wmi for win32_processor on a

Or has someone come up with a better way of querying TSM clients for the num of

Steve-- had those errors on a clustered (in more senses of the word than one)

actually worked with MS and performed the fix:

Following changes were made to the registry:

PoolUsageMaximum=dword:0028
PagedPoolSize=dword:

No errors since update

Hi All

I have a new client with an enormous file server, running Windows 2003. We
have had a string of problems, most have been fixed by upgrade to TSM client
5.5.0.4 and OS upgrade to SP2. We are using MEMORYEFFICIENTBACKUP=DISKCACHE
but still get

ANSE Win32 RC 1450 as noted in
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21251903

Pointing at the Faulty OS or poor implementation doesn't solve the problem.
This is the client's main file server and hasn't yet had a clean backup.

Has anyone else seen this issue, and developed a workaround that you'd like to
share? All I can think of at this point is a series of backups of various
subtrees,

Thanks

Re: TSM server scaling/sizing for lots (20000) nodes

2008-04-29 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Hi Richard!

How does your shop deal with departmental server admins-- do they have any
access to the TSM server? If they do, do you allow them to use their own ids
for backup and restore, ISC/Admin Center, TSM Operational Reports, SQL
queries, etc.?

I used to be on the other side of the TSM fence. I adminned the TSM servers
the clients (TSM-wise); but I have changed jobs and state agencies. Now part
of my duties are adminning TSM clients, but I have NO access to the TSM server.
I have to submit a trouble ticket to obtain information about standard
management classes, enhancements to client backup reports (from TOR) and node
queries (among other things).

I have been to other public sites for users on TSM (off the top of my head-- U
Florida; Berkeley; Oxford; BU) where policies, standards, client code, option
sets, charges--- information, simply, is given to the TSM user community.

I have requested a view-only admin id and/or a policy-limited id-- No go.
Some of my trouble tickets are still open/suspended.

How DO most TSM shops run their service for the TSM client admins that are not
TSM server admins? When I was a TSM admin, I was THRILLED if one of the client
admins even took an interest in whether backups were failing, so this cold
shoulder is frustrating.

If others are willing to share their experiences, please chime in!!

thanks!

My first thought would be: How much unique data is there? This is to say, if
the PC disk was lost, would most of it actually be rebuilt from a central
reinstall image of some kind, rather than representing unique data? If so, a
lot of stuff could be excluded as unnecessary.

I would then look into whether all these PCs actually store generated data, as
opposed to having all data worth having actually residing on central file
servers, where a single point of backup/restore would prevail.

If all these PCs are unique and individually storing data, a better approach to
PC implementation needs to be looked at, as backup/ restore, network loading,
and the overhead of fielding possibly thousands of phone calls could be
untenable... As in, who the heck came up with such a rag-tag deployment,
anyway?

This is all going to make for an interesting service agreement...
one which will have to say that unless some kind of real-time backup is put
into place, data will inevitably be subject to unrecoverability due to standard
backup intervals. Assure that those served aren't expecting miracles, to avoid
political calamities.

I would be reasonably happy with that arrangement-- I have asked for it, and

Lisa,

I'm in a situation similar to yours - I was a TSM Server admin in a previous
life, currently admin over all Windows related B/R. The admins here graciously
granted my id unrestricted policy priv, which gives me 95% access, based on my
prior knowledge. We (Windoze folks) maintain all our own schedules, node defs,
and heavily use client option sets to centralize all of our common
include/excludes. All of our nodes are in their own policy domain, which helps
segregate things a bit.

Overall the arrangement works well. Good luck, hope this helps convince your
admins to loosen the reins a bit!

The TSM admins register the nodes. We request from the TSM admins to add,
delete, and associate client nodes. Anything that requires admin access is
performed by admins.

Unfortunately, I have come to learn that my happiness is not one of my daily
admin goals ;- )

How does your shop deal with departmental server admins-- do they have

The administrators of our TSM clients incidentally do have access to the TSM
server, by virtue of the admin instance created along with REGister Node, but
seldom use that, being content to simply deal with normal client
administration. They are well-behaved, and utilize B/R for legitimate file
systems. We don't use ISC or TSMOR middleware:
we're an IT shop with a history of writing most of the software in use, and so
use dsmadmc for administration and parse logs and accounting records for true
views of TSM activity. We don't use GUIs unless we absolutely have to, given
that they can hide and distort underlying reality - and have a history of
reliability and performance problems. (As Andy says, The command line is your
friend.)

If a TSM (or any other type of) server is well configured, administered, and
monitored, with good periodic reports to clients, there will be little or no
need for server access by client administrators, and everyone will be happy. I
can see from your experience that it's not always like that, unfortunately.

Re: estimated release date for Windows BA client 5.5.1 level?

2008-04-24 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
Funny-- I was just looking at this too. According to IBM's release schedule
for fixpacks, it should have been at the end of March. The next date they list
is June 28.

Anyone written an install script for the 5.5 baclient level and feel like
sharing?

thanks!

Can anyone provide an ETA on the 5.5.1 level of the BA client for Windows? I
need to provide mgmt with an estimated timeline for upgrading. I want to be at
the 5.5 level, but will feel a lot more comfortable with one less dot-zero
behind it.

Thanks,

Re: Windows Clients failing with ANS1251E and other errors

2008-03-17 Thread Laughlin, Lisa
I thought I'd throw this in too. Baclient ver 5.5 is not explicitly supported
with a 5.3 server.

There are two hotfixes listed for W2k3 clients with VSS errors also. This has
been on list before.

thanks!

Well, doing a quick Google search for ANS1351E Session rejected: All
server sessions brings up all kinds of possibliteseverything from
the MaxSessions definition of your server to the client needing to
prompt for the password, and so on.

As for the truncated while reading in Shared Static mode messages, there
are also a number of Google hits as well as an entry on Richard Sims

We are having a issue with backups failing on a couple of Windows
