Re: [AFMUG] Centos is dead?

2020-12-11 Thread Steve Jones
Holy shit, I just took a cursory look at redhat pricing. Starts at 350 a
year per server, physical server only, and not intended for production use.
2500 a year for the data center if I read it right

I run webmin to manage package updates and BIND. If I'm reading correctly
ubuntu isnt terrible, just less security patched since it's all opensource
and not subsidized by a big dog like red hat. Probably doable, but no yum.

Has something like this happenned with centos historically? I assume the
linux community will bring about a comparable solution or resolution.

This just stinks, I had my centos process down.

Is this end of life like a microst end of life where they just keep
patching and saying they mean it this time for years?

Hence the next statement in what I said

There hasnt been any ruling, so there isnt any finality. There needs to be
finality. Scotus action today is just going to drag this thing out. Until they
do their job, hear the case, rule against the states, the propensity for
violence increases daily. And I'm not just talking about secessionists.

At least the next 2 years wont be anything like the left over the last four
still calling Clinton madame president and screaming at the sky. The right will
either pop off or move on. More likely to move on if the scotus does their job
and rules on it.

It's a real good forecast for starlink, the left lives funding a monopoly they
back. I'll bet scotus rules on that within 3 years, they wont claim it's not in
their wheelhouse

I'll break this down for bill and jaime to understand. The case itself is in
the purview of SCOTUS. By not hearing it (and issuing a negative ruling on the
merits, as the tone reflects) the issue would have been ended, also likely
ending the other pending cases. All theyve done now is created a mechanism to

You have two choices when your kids are fighting (you're kids are always your

Or you can have them tell you their gripes, then tell them to fuck off with a

It happens. Someone will probably fork it and make up a new distro if
that hasn't happened already. IMO the main reason to use CentOS was
because it was rebuilt RHEL.

I gave up on Red Hat about two releases into Fedora Core when it became
obvious it was just rapidly changing garbage for testing on the peasants

It happens. Someone will probably fork it and make up a new distro if
that hasn't happened already. IMO the main reason to use CentOS was
because it was rebuilt RHEL.

I gave up on Red Hat about two releases into Fedora Core when it became
obvious it was just rapidly changing garbage for testing on the peasants
before bringing fixes into their commercial version.

2020-12-11 Thread Steve Jones
Dismissing with prejudice wont address any of the other multitude pending.
It also opens up the door, as noted by alito. The courts can't say it's not
their problem, when case law says otherwise. That's the angle they will
probably come back at. The court at some point is going to have to attack
the political consequense they're trying to avoid eventually, get it done
now rather than later, there is only so much synapse left in my texan
friend, and eventually I'm gonna need his advice on laying out DIN

Re: [AFMUG] As if Dealing with Email spam wasn't enough

2020-12-11 Thread Ken Hohhof
I see that T-Mobile provides a method to report a call was “not spam”, using a
3rd party called First Orion. Maybe Verizon and AT do something similar.

https://callreporting.t-mobile.com/

I’m not sure any of the carriers have implemented STIR/SHAKEN yet. When that
happens, it might be incumbent on the outgoing carrier to follow the protocols
to validate the caller ID and prevent spoofing. But otherwise, the usual
finger pointing would be at your customer (clean up your act you filthy
spammer) or the called party’s carrier (fix your spam filter). With email
spam, your mailserver IP could be on a blacklist. But with spam calls, there
is no equivalent to a mailserver to blacklist, it would be the caller’s number
that would be on a blacklist, or a belief that the caller ID was being spoofed.

Most of the robocalls I get are from spoofed numbers either in my same
areacode/prefix (neighbor spoofing) or the caller ID just comes up as a town.
But often the caller ID will be an actual business that is being spoofed,
either randomly, or sometimes I think on purpose they pick something like an
AT phone store because it looks like a real call. So some robocaller could
be spoofing his number and giving him a bad reputation. Supposedly part of the
AI the phone companies use to determine spam calls is how many calls they are
getting from that number, and how many are answered.

Doing a quick Google search, I also found it interesting one telemarketing blog
claimed it helps to send the customer an email ahead of time and include your
phone number in the email. The claim is that phones search your email trying
to display a name when they see that number calling. At first that sounded a
bit far fetched, but actually I guess it’s not.

I have received calls from "Verizon Financial Services" (that's Verizon nagging
about a late payment on the mobile phone bill) that Verizon flags as "Potential
Spam". In other words, Verizon identifying their own calls as spam.

So now do I not only have to deal with customers complaining that when they
send messages out, they get marked as spam, Now i have customers complaining
that their outbound phone calls are being marked as 'Probably Spam' when they
call peoples cell phones. Oh the joys of this new AI driven world we live in.

Customers perspective - YOUR SYSTEM IS BROKEN!! YOU FIX IT!! FIX IT NOW

But lord have mercy is they get a few spam messages or telemarketers get
through to them.

complaining that their outbound phone calls are being marked as
'Probably Spam' when they call peoples cell phones.  Oh the joys of this
