Ah, this was Oberlin College. We all know that college is Nucking Futs. It’s
exactly what you would expect from a liberal arts school that costs $77k/year
to send your kid to for a degree in art appreciation.

Use SMX + AXOS cards. Software's a lot better. Cheaper up front.

Way more expensive in the long run, of course.

2021-10-24 Thread Ryan Ray
We use Calix extensively and are seeing issues with 2.4GHz and the new U6x
(2.5G SFP) hardware. Router says the band is on and ready to connect, but
no devices work.

I'm sure it's just a software issue, but the 844g/e platform before it has
been very good.

I'm getting a little annoyed with CMS lately. Hard to pull metrics or
report on what's going on in my network in a quick and easy fashion. It
needs an overhaul pretty desperately.

Calix is a good all around platform, and we're happy to continue using them
for the foreseeable future.

Re: [AFMUG] E7-2 GPON and VOIP

2021-10-20 Thread Chuck McCown via AF
Hell, we had kids with rifles and handguns in their lockers during deer season.
 Teachers too.
Very few kids turned out to be snowflakes. A few fistfights now and then gives
you grit.

And the funny thing to me is, the guys of my father’s generator that fought WW2
(and my great uncle WW1) were tougher than the hubs of hell compared to my
generation.

I think we are seeing devolution. I read a junk news piece a couple of days
ago that a college student was triggered because a cis gendered man came to the
dorms to replace a radiator. They thought that was some kind of a crime I
guess.

Yeah, we didn’t know how good we had it when all we had to do was go sit in the
school hallway and practice kissing our ass goodby. Now the kids get to
worry about which loser is going to shoot the school up.

Of course in the 70’s 3/4 of the pickup trucks in the parking lot (which was
3/4 of the vehicles) had hunting rifles and shotguns hanging in them. You
really didn’t want to give everyone an excuse to start shooting at you.

Is there any such thing as a GPON system that isn't vendor locked?

I'm not specifically defending Calix here, I'm just thinking I haven't yet
seen GPON equipment that made any assertions about interop with other vendors.
Unless you went ActiveE aren't you still locked in with whatever vendor you
went with?

and welcome to Calix. That's one of the reasons I opted to not go with
Calix for our fiber system. Just as vendor-locked as Apple and Ubiquiti.

So with most VoIP devices... you can point them to an auto-provision
server. When they boot up, they send a request (FTP, HTTP, HTTPS) for the
config file based on MAC address, the provisioning server creates the file or
serves up a file already created.

There is no way to direct an ONT to a provisioning server on boot-up that
isn't Calix. That is where the ONT expects to find the SIP credentials. There
is no way to have the Calix Cloud pull credentials based on MAC address from a
SIP provisioning server. So the only option you have is to manually add the
credentials by first creating them on the VoIP platform and then entering them
into the Calix Cloud.

There could be a way to do this via API... and really there isn't any
reason I can think of why there is not. But Calix has a hell of a play to pay
mentality and partnering with them in any way as a vendor is a lot of paperwork
and bureaucracy.

So with most VoIP devices... you can point them to an auto-provision server.
When they boot up, they send a request (FTP, HTTP, HTTPS) for the config file
based on MAC address, the provisioning server creates the file or serves up a
file already created.

There is no way to direct an ONT to a provisioning server on boot-up that isn't
Calix. That is where the ONT expects to find the SIP credentials. There is no
way to have the Calix Cloud pull credentials based on MAC address from a SIP
provisioning server. So the only option you have is to manually add the
credentials by first creating them on the VoIP platform and then entering them
into the Calix Cloud.

There could be a way to do this via API... and really there isn't any reason I
can think of why there is not. But Calix has a hell of a play to pay mentality
and partnering with them in any way as a vendor is a lot of paperwork and
bureaucracy.

I've got a few business customers who would like to add phone service. In the
past we have just set them up with a service like Goto/Jive. Is it possible to
configure something like this and then just use the POTS port on the ONTs?
GPON4 card says it supports VOIP.

Carl,

We have many ISPs reselling our VoIP service
using Calix ONTs (Gigacenter and
Gigaspire).  There is no auto-provision option which is a shame.

our Gigacenters and P series ONTs all have POTs
jacks.  Any chance you could point me in the
right direction as to how to start configuring
VOIP service?  I have no idea how to even begin thinking about it. Â

I've got a few business customers who would
like to add phone service.  In the past we
have just set them up with a service like
Goto/Jive.  Is it possible to configure
something like this and then just use the POTS
port on the ONTs?  GPON4 card says it supports VOIP. Â

Is there any such thing as a GPON system that /isn't/ vendor locked?

I'm not specifically defending Calix here, I'm just thinking I haven't
yet seen GPON equipment that made any assertions about interop with
other vendors.  Unless you went ActiveE aren't you still locked in with
whatever vendor you went with?

and welcome to Calix. That's one of the reasons I opted to not go with
Calix for our fiber system. Just as vendor-locked as Apple and Ubiquiti.

So with most VoIP devices... you can point them to an auto-provision
server.  When they boot up, they send a request (FTP, HTTP, HTTPS) for
the config file based on MAC address, the provisioning server creates
the file or serves up a file already created.

There is no way to direct an ONT to a provisioning server on boot-up
that isn't Calix.  That is where the ONT expects to find the SIP
credentials.  There is no way to have the Calix Cloud pull credentials
based on MAC address from a SIP provisioning server.  So the only
option you have is to manually add the credentials by first creating
them on the VoIP platform and then entering them into the Calix Cloud.

There could be a way to do this via API... and really there isn't any
reason I can think of why there is not. But Calix has a hell of a play
to pay mentality and partnering with them in any way as a vendor is a
lot of paperwork and bureaucracy.

Carl,

We have many ISPs reselling our VoIP service
using Calix ONTs (Gigacenter and
Gigaspire).  There is no auto-provision option which is a shame.

Is TR-069 not an option to provision outside of OMCI?

VOIP service?  I have no idea how to even begin thinking about it. Â

Thanks Daniel,

I did scope out your site a bit the other day. I'll reach out to you
offlist about it. It doesn't seem like GoTo is going to work for it or at
least not in a way I'd want to count on.

Failover rules when a device is offline is pretty straightforward.

The e911 disclosure they have to sign should be pretty clear things
won't work if the internet no longer works.

This list may or may not be accurate.

SIP-Gateway or Remote
Need a VLAN for SIP
Associate it to the uplink.
Tag action for tagging SIP traffic to the VLAN
Associate the SIP config with the SIP service

E7 > Profiles > Service > SIP Gateway > Profiles click Create
Proxy server is the location of the SIP switch.
Switch Type – Chose none if it is not shown
Domain if provider requires one.

Setup IP Hosts
Tag action SIP
Host protocol dhcp or static or whatever
Apply
Go to services or the voice port
Voice port

Create SIP service
Username,
password and URI are provided by the softswitch provider
URI is same as username
SIP profile is the SIP profile made above
Set up line features

System default dial plan
Create

One thing I hate about provider VOIP in a lot of cases is that when their
service goes down, their phone options are down. Got/Jive solutions offer
failover options. We had a few of our contract services customers move to
cableco based VOIP bundled with their data package against advice. When
their service goes down they want to know why their phones stop working
with no failover to cell or backup internet. "I told you so" is a hard
concept for them to grasp when theyve gone off grid
