Re: [AFMUG] Fwd: FCC ID SWX-60GL Application Processed : Ubiquiti Networks, Inc. for New Equipment

2019-03-30 Thread Mathew Howard
I read somewhere that it has a beam forming antenna, and I think that has
to be true, because there'd be no way to aim it accurately enough with that
mount otherwise. I believe it's the same size as the 16dbi 5ghz NanoBeam,
which would more than big enough for any links that the 60ghz is going to
link on.

2019-03-30 Thread Ken Hohhof
The antenna looks small for anything useful at 5 GHz, and the plastic
ball-and-socket mount looks flimsy at 60 GHz. With the beam 1/10 as wide at 60
GHz, any bobbing in the wind could be problematic, even with what looks to be a
quite small antenna. I even worry about putting anything larger than a 1 ft
60-80 GHz dish on a Rohn tower without torque arms because of wind moving the
“pencil beam”.

I think they may have killed the Gigabeam name... it's just listed as "60G
Link" in the beta store now.

The gigabeam name is rather funny for anyone that saw a first-generation
71-86GHz gigabeam product. It was the original competitor of the Bridgewave
GE80 but didn't do so well in the market, due to being more difficult to
install and with a weird user interface for configuration.

The original gigabeam went bankrupt quite some time ago...

2019-03-29 Thread Mathew Howard
They look pretty unimpressive to me. From what I've seen, they are PTP
only, and it looks like they're tiny antennas (so probably the equivalent
of the non-dish MikroTiks... like 13dbi or something). They do have 5ghz
backup, which Mikrotik doesn't, so there's that, but Ignitenet has that,
and they have bigger antennas and two and half times the capacity.

They accidentally leaked it to the beta store early and has been "coming
soon" for a while now:

Since it was approved, I'm hoping to snag a pair once they're available,
