I have yet to find any way in which web mail is better than fat client mail,
other than when the account you wish to check isn't in the fat client on your

Also people who didn't set up IMAP so their emails disappeared off their email

2020-11-17 Thread Colin Stanners
I've worked in places that are dozens or hundreds of miles from the nearest
cell tower, and not worth installing sat internet for a few days. Without
internet, having access to all email for lookup on a PC is very useful.
Starlink may change that limitation.

If a Gmail account gets cracked, it's very possible for all mail to get
intentionally deleted or for the account to be locked. Since Gmail is a
free service, there is no guarantee of recovery from that, either of
messages or access - you may simply lose everything. I use Thunderbird to
do a full download of my gmail account every few months to reduce that risk.

Desktop email doesn't prevent you from using gmail, or any other
  main system for that matter.

I use Thunderbird, and it allows me to access all my various
email systems; some are gmail, one is yahoo mail, and one is a
private email server. I access all of them at the same time
through the same interface. At the same time, I can access the
various email servers through their web mail interfaces. In fact,
I can do both at the same time. I prefer using Thunderbird simply
because it does them all at the same time.

Because webmail is slow.  I can arrow key up and down through my inbox
to skim the automated alerts and advertising and delete as I go.  I
really don't think there's an equivalent in a web app.

I do use Gmail and IMAP with my desktop client, and I won't lose any
mail due to a PC issue.  I did tech support for email clients from 1999
until I stopped doing tech support.  It really wasn't hard.  The
fundamentals are the same in all of them, so you just download whatever
application they're using so you can see what they're looking at and
walk them through it.

There are 30-something year olds in our office have the same perspective
as you.  Those guys insist that supporting desktop email is too hard or
something.  I'm only 4 years apart from them, so maybe I'm at the tail
end of the "desktop email" group.  I'm Dave in this comic.

I had outlook already on the machine so I just turned it on. I got the reading
pane configured to look similar to WLM. Glad to see this note, at least my new
mail on my new domain is working with AF.

I had a good many year run with WLM. I like the fact you can right click a
header and instantly see message source. The search is better and simpler than
outlook.

But if someone sent you a v card or meeting invite it was always a pain. And
yeah, it was a bit buggy but not so much so that I couldn’t live with it.
Until this morning. I found a database restoral procedure for it that I may
try. Hopefully my home machine is still OK.

Is there a reason that you don't wish to use Thunderbird with the Lightning
calendar add-on?

WLM had some limitations - IIRC it would just crash when exposed to a huge
number of messages.

Have resisted outlook for years. Few times it would be nice. When someone
sends a meeting or contact at least I can read it without having to use a text
editor and parsing through the complex crap…

Is there a reason that you don't wish to use Thunderbird with the Lightning
calendar add-on?

WLM had some limitations - IIRC it would just crash when exposed to a huge
number of messages.

So, today it appears that my Windows Live Mail database is corrupt. Can
only see headers. So switching to outlook but that is painful.

WLM. sob.

Have resisted outlook for years. Few times it would be nice. When someone

Whatever metric they use is not linear. I've watched it hang for a
really
long time at some low percentage (like your 27%), then finish the
last 70%

in the space of a minute.

Re: [AFMUG] OT windows update

2019-08-20 Thread Ken Hohhof
If you're seeing regular bursts of disk activity, let it run for 2-3 hours
before giving up. I'm assuming it has already done the download and is
decompressing, checking, and installing the update(s). All of which involve
lots of disk activity, probably interspersed with CPU and memory activity.
If it's just sitting there doing nothing, the update is probably stuck.
