My wife wanted one until she saw the price. Electric is the future, but the
battery weight has to come down to be an effective track car. I’d also be
curious how those motors handle running full out all the time.

How is a $500k gt more economical than a $250k Tesla? The Tesla is going to
blow the doors off of the GT and the Corvette. The Tesla has a 0-60 of less
than 2 seconds and a top end of 250mph.

2018-03-08 Thread Jason McKemie
They're saying that as-is (with a 600+ mile range), the Roadster will be
around 4000lbs, compared to the GT's 3300 and the Z06's 3500. It's not too
hard to imagine a lower-range unit that is considerably lighter (the
batteries alone are supposed to be close to 1800lbs). Point taken on the
road car vs a track car, but that applies to all of these to some extent.
And yes, the price is pretty absurd, the Z06 is much more reasonable.

If Tesla had a 300 mile range version that was track-tuned it would be
really hard to compete with I would think.

Good point. Teslas are heavy. With all the torque they have straight line
acceleration they can do. Probably not worth a crap on corners; I've never
heard what kind of cornering they can do, and 1.1 Gs would be a significant
hurdle. OTOH, all that weight is mostly under the floor, so their CG would
be very close to the ground.

0-60 does not a track car make. Most of these cars we are talking about can
corner at about 1.1-1.2+gs. That’s a big advantage on a race track. And they
all weight a lot less than the Tesla will with the entire car designed for 1
thing, lower lap times. If you want a race car, it’s going to drive like crap
on the street. If you want a drag car, it’s going to drive like crap on a road
track. If you want a car that can do all 3, that’s a compromise car. The
Tesla roadster is built for the street first, road race cars will beat it.
Drag only cars like a Demon will beat it in ¼ mile when prepped, they are
already hitting sub 9’s.

But seriously, how many of us are going to spend $250K on a car. I got hives
thinking of spending $80K on a street Tesla.

Josh,

Force 300 DOES work on epmp 1k and 2k. It will require a firmware update in
the next 1-2 months but it absolutely WILL connect to the 1k and 2k AP's.
That's been confirmed a few times already in Cambium forums and partner

Dodge Viper ACR smokes the GT350r (65k often with 40k markup, not sure where
you see 500k) and Z06 road cars. None of them are track cars.

918 is faster than the ACR on the track by a good 5 seconds.

HPDE insurance isn't crazy expensive - a single day is $300 and if you bundle a
handful of events it drops pretty steeply.

2018-03-08 Thread Josh Luthman
Dodge Viper ACR smokes the GT350r (65k often with 40k markup, not sure
where you see 500k) and Z06 road cars. None of them are track cars.

918 is faster than the ACR on the track by a good 5 seconds.

HPDE insurance isn't crazy expensive - a single day is $300 and if you
bundle a handful of events it drops pretty steeply.

[AFMUG] Animal Farm Summer 2018

2018-03-08 Thread Chuck McCown
Registration is now open:
http://www.afmug.com/

The sponsor info is old, but maybe they will all offer to sponsor.
Really, trying to get Ditchwitch, Vermeer, Preformed Line Products etc to
sponsor as that is the kind of stuff we will be discussing.

Re: [AFMUG] OT: This is pretty slick - that price tag though...

2018-03-08 Thread Bill Prince
That is one major ding against the Model 3; too many things incorporated
into that massive monitor, including things that would be much simpler with
a simple switch or two (or three or four). Not sure how that passed any
usability tests. I would have made it smaller, or tried to figure out how
to blend it better.

Normal insurance won't cover any vehicle on a race track. You have to buy
specialized insurance, which I'm sure would be crazy expensive.

It would be more economical to buy the new Ford GT350R ($500k) or the new
Corvette Z06 ($120k)... mainly because they are the two fastest track cars
available right now... even beating the Porsche 918 ($1 million).

IGMP over the public internet via VPN. $250 cost to get started. I liked
everything about the solution but the IGMP.
You have to use their STB and you have to have a network that will happily
route PIM Sparse Mode correctly.
I understand that is not Mimosa yet, but Cambium and UBNT will support it.

Oh, how I dislike IGMP.

At least on the early units there is no web config enabled when you power them
on for the first time. You have to use the phone app or management system to
set it up initially.
Even after that, web config options are limited/non-existant which might be a
good or bad thing, we didn't like it as we prefer to baseline config everything
before rolling it out and having to use a phone to connect to every single
device gets old quickly.

No doubt about that. But, considering the specs on this car, it is cheap

I was excited about the AirCube AC (price, aesthetic, sane out-of-box defaults,
UNMS support) but wired NAT performance was a disappointment. The switch chip
they used doesn’t have hardware-accelerated NAT, so it maxes out around 400
Mbps. Worse still, the chip they chose has a variation with hardware NAT, they
just cheaped out as they do.

Re: [AFMUG] Aircube

We have an AC model as well as the ISP models. Deployed one the other day,
Set it up on my phone. POE is not enabled by default. I plan on setting one
up and downloading the config file for simple deployment.

ONU can be used with other OLTs. They have a set list of OLTs their ONU will
work with.

The UFiber ONUs are the only supported ONU that is compatible with the UFiber
OLT. Other third-party ONUs will not connect properly to the UFiber OLT.
