the price it’s definitely handy when I do need it

I adjusted as well. My Palm Treo keyboard was the last keyboard I loved. A
big part of being comfortable with a on-screen keyboard was learning to
trust autocorrect and having a good keyboard that you CAN trust. I likey
Swiftkey on Android. I can bang away and don't often have to make any
corrections. I'm on a Note4 currently.

For rdp you need something bigger. I use a galaxy tab s 8.4 with lte. VPN to
our network and then tightvnc into the monitoring system works quite well. The
onscreen keyboard is usable with 2 thumbs. It covers 1/3 of the screen. Not
something to work with but enough to do short management jobs.

My son has a Note 5. The screen is much bigger than mine. I think everyone
who types a lot on a phone uses the 2 thumb method and have no problems.
Old timers like me tend to poke with an index finger and miss a lot, either
need to learn the thumb method or buy a stylus.

Re: [AFMUG] Cell Phone Gripe

2016-01-26 Thread Bill Prince

The Note 5 has a fairly jumbo screen (over 5.5"?).

The last keyboarded phone I had was a Palm Pre. It had a smaller screen,
but with the slide-out keyboard it was quite useable.

I finally bit the bullet, and got a Moto Droid RAZR Maxx (HD) several
years ago. It's "only" a 5" screen, but was considered kind of jumbo
when I got it. I got used to it, and usually thumb-type. Auto-correct is
a PITA, but I've been getting wise to its ways. I don't think I miss the
physical keyboard any more.

My next phone will go up a little in size, because there's still room in
my pocket.

I just swipe on google keyboard honestly. I use to love
swiftkey/swype, but the stock google one improved dramatically over
the years.

2016-01-26 Thread Steve Utick
Yea, it's not too bad, and clears up the whole screen. I've used it to
get into our FreeBSD boxes and fix stuff numerous times. Had to clean up
a spammer that hit our mail server a couple of years ago, and worked
great. Better than the on screen keyboard, that's for sure.

That's exactly the thing. Try typing a bunch of *nix CLI stuff with the
on screen keyboard where you have to flip to different views for numbers
and different symbols. It gets old fast.

Absolutely. Plus, it has arrow keys so you can easily scroll back through
commands, etc. on a command line. Big time saver there. Also has a TAB
key for easy command completion, etc.

Microsoft seems to be working on a solution where you carry a dongle or mini
dock with you, and scrounge a big screen, keyboard and mouse wherever you are
to turn your phone into a PC.
