Solar winds pricing is like when your income goes from upper lower class to
lower middle class, everything goes from affordable but minimal, to
 unaffordable but required.

Ubnt ptp radios get their config manually backed up before deployment

BMC TrueSight spread across around 8,000 VMs + netapps + infra.

Re: [AFMUG] Network Equipment Config Backups

2016-12-12 Thread Paul Stewart
It really depends …. so in our case, it’s running a dedicated web interface and
a pair of pollers. The SQL backend is clustered serving other systems besides
just Solarwinds - it’s a *large* cluster running MS SQL Enterprise and NetApp
SAN…. it was already existing for other internal systems we utilize….

Previous job, with Solarwinds, we ran 3 dedicated polling engines, a dedicated
web front end, and a dedicated server with SQL Standard on the backend

The variables are polling frequency (we are 5 minutes), number of
nodes/interfaces/volumes etc…. and to some degree number of users hitting the
web interface. Also, reports can put a load on the system depending on their
complexity and how often they run.

Cheers,
Paul

Tomas has gotten a lot of crap in our Slack chat for using Java, but he has
make some good counterpoints. Chief among them is that shitty code is shitty
code in any language. The easier languages tend to have more people coding in
them that aren't exactly adhering to best practices.

2016-05-27 Thread Steve Utick
On our Cisco gear, we run a kron entry in the config that regularly tftp's
the config to a tftp server. I then run logrotate on that tftp server that
rotates the configs and keeps multiple manual and monthly backups on the
server.

This is what I use in a script. Sends both .backup and .rsc Although I
can't actually remember the last time I used the .backup file.

/system backup save name=email_backup
/export file=backup
/tool e-mail send file=email_backup.backup to="mail...@domain.com"
body=("See attached file for System Backup\n") subject=([/system
identity get name] ." " . [/system resource get version]. " " .[/system
clock get time] . " " . [/system clock get date] . " Backup")
/tool e-mail send file=backup.rsc to="mail...@domain.com" body=("See
attached file for System Backup\n") subject=([/system identity get name]
." " . [/system resource get version]. " " .[/system clock get time] .
" " . [/system clock get date] . " " .[/system routerboard get model]
." Backup")

For our MT stuff, I have the routers generate a .backup and an /export
compact into a .rsc every night. Three CentOS machines spread across the
network then SCP those files off of them. Works good nuf.

When I was at a WISP, Aircontrol 1/2.

For toughswitches we just did a manual backup until we phased those
out for netonix.
---

Currently we're mostly Juniper, so those configs get backed up via
archive on commit via scp to a vm, then that folder gets sync'd to
dropbox. For our fiber stuff, it's built into the NMS software.

Eventually I might add rancid and rancid/observium integration, but
currently I'm not worried about it.
