Re: [AFMUG] Revisiting Backup LTE service - devices

2018-05-14 Thread Darin Steffl
Customers are spoiled nowadays with many of our users doing 25-40 GB of
usage per DAY. So if they were paying $10/GB, their cellular bill after one
day would be $250 to $400 per day based on their usage on our unlimited
plans with fixed wireless today.

Some want to complain if they are down a couple hours and ask for a free
month credit when I'd really like to reply to them that they'll receive a 4
hour credit on their $68 bill which comes out to $0.38 for their 4 hours of
downtime. Most people don't actually NEED a backup service and if they do,
they should learn how to use their mobile hotspot on Verizon or AT which
includes 15GB of usage every month which is plenty for work, checking
email, etc. If won't fulfill their WANTS like video streaming, gaming,
downloads, etc. and that's what they seem to care about the most.

You can take a look at Project Fi (Google) $10 per Gig and they will give
you 10 SIM cards for free. They use several different carriers for service.

Just my ¢2 and that's about what it's worth.

Re: [AFMUG] Revisiting Backup LTE service - devices

2018-05-14 Thread Colin Stanners
I don't think it's worth it.

Small-package customers won't pay enough for a cellular backup (considering
the costs if some of them do 5-20GB of Netflix over the weekend). For
larger package customers it's usually cheaper for you to install a
redundant link to a second tower or even pay a competitor for backup
service instead of going cellular.

I would guess that $10/GB is the best you will do unless you want to roll
it out to 10,000 customers then you might have better buying power with one
of the carriers...

Yeah, you want affordable cellular data in bulk, which doesn't exist.

Looking for a 4g LTE solution that won’t kill me if several customers on a
tower (that have the devices) start using it over a weekend while the tower is
down.

These 2 look to be suitable for tower mgmt., but not necessarily a customer
option (redundancy) at scale
