[MCN-L] Exhibition Schedule Timelines

2014-03-28 Thread Dianne Reuby

I use a very basic online project management tool called iteamwork. The
free version hasn't been updated since the dawn of time, but it does
everything I need, and I've had no problems in the 7 or so years I've
been using it. I use it for forward plan and accreditation rather than
exhibitions though.

The paid version allows you to download the software, or host on their
private server. Licensing is according to number of users.

I'm finding this on my 12.04 LTS - it started about two weeks ago. It
also seems to be sending and receiving data on the internet whether Evo

[Evolution] Current message pane doesn't update

2013-02-07 Thread Dianne Reuby
I'm running Evo 3.2.3 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It's set to have a current
message pane open below the message list pane. I'm often finding that
when I click on a message, the message pane doesn't update, even if I
change to another folder. The only way is to close Evo and relaunch it.

I can double-click the message line and open the message in a new
window, but this isn't as convenient.

Anyone else had this?

TIA,
Dianne Reuby

Not completely - it seems to come and go, although I have now noticed it

[Evolution] Evo vanishes when switching workspaces

2012-09-16 Thread Dianne Reuby
Running Ubuntu 12.04, did a clean install about three weeks ago and
installed Evolution 3.2.3 for my email. I have four workspaces, and
usually run Evolution on one, browser on another, and other stuff on the
others if necessary.

For two days I've found that if I try to switch back to Evo by clicking
the icon in launcher or using ctrl + alt + arrow, the global menu
changes to the Evo menu items, but the close/minimise buttons are
missing. I can create a new email, but if I want to see the main Evo
window I have to exit and restart. It doesn't switch to the Evo
workspace - the global menu appears on the workspace I'm using,
replacing whatever menu was there (eg my browser).

Doesn't seem to happen with other programs, just Evo. Anyone else
experiencing this?

[Evolution] Mail notification in Ubunut 12.04

2012-08-28 Thread Dianne Reuby
Finally done a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04, with Unity. Installed Evo
3.2.3, and have a question.

The mail icon at the top right of the panel only shows Thunderbird - I
know I changed it before so it would look for Evo and notify me of
incoming mail, but can't info on doing this in 12.04.

Do I simply have to install evolution-notification? I've got the mail
notification plug-in enabled, but I usually have my speakers turned off
so I prefer the new mail icon if possible.

Thanks,

[ubuntu-uk] Swindon Hackspace at Museum of Computing

2012-05-24 Thread Dianne Reuby
Latest update on the proposed hackspace:
=
I'm Jamie, I've been working with Simon on the proposed hackspace at the
Museum of Computing in Swindon.

We are having a meeting at the museum on Wednesday 30th May at 7pm, to
discuss the hackspace with anybody who is interested in coming along.
Links for directions can be found at the bottom of this mail, please let
us know if you will be attending so we know how many to expect.

Thanks to everybody who returned a questionnaire, from that feedback we
will initially run a weekday evening Hackspace from 6-9pm, most likely
each Monday. We may survey those interested upon which weekday is best
before confirming the day.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to provide open/24hr access as it is
not a full time dedicated hackspace and the museum is usually closed
when we'll be wanting access. There may be the possibility of adding
additional meetings if the demand is there. Also, we can arrange adhoc
meetings if required for some event or other initiative.

Other items to discuss:

* Preparations needed for work area
* Best evening, Mon-Fri, on which to meet
* Terms of access to hackspace, including opening times and
entry/membership fees
* Suggestions for presentations you'd like to see, or can give (or know
someone who can)
* Types of projects that you see being carried out and what equipment
you need, or can provide.
* Collaboration with other Hackspaces or similar initiatives (Artsite)
* Events we could hold, or attend elsewhere

If you're unfamiliar with the museum, we're opposite the Swindon Model
Centre on Theatre Square, between Swindon Central Library and the Wyvern
Theatre.
Museum location : http://maps.google.co.uk/?q=The+Museum+Of
+Computingcid=1649343045243643722

Regards,

Jamie Osborne
===

All welcome to this meeting - let me know if you want to attend and I'll
let Jamie know.

[ubuntu-uk] Hackspace at the Museum of Computing

2012-04-29 Thread Dianne Reuby
We're looking at the possibility of starting a 'Hackspace' at the museum
in Swindon town centre.

A Hackspace (or Hackerspace) is a place where like-minded people with an
interest in technology (electronics, computers, robotics, programming,
electronic art etc.) can get together, collaborate, share ideas and
resources and make really cool stuff!

If you are interested, or know somebody who might be interested then
please email hacksp...@museumofcomputing.org.uk and we will send you a
very short questionnaire to see how much interest there is.

Some more info on UK Hackspaces is here

[Evolution] Resetting mailto: to Evo

2012-02-29 Thread Dianne Reuby
I use Gmail online purely for my genealogy, everything else I use Evo. I
recently misunderstood the instructions for Gmail settings, and told it
to use Gmail for mailto: (I thought this was for Gmail only, as that was
the settings I was altering).

I've reset the prefs in Chrome to mailto: = none, removed the handler
completely, but nothing seems to to reset it to use Evo - when I click a
mail address, it loads Chrome.

I'm using Evo 2.30.3 on Ubuntu 10.10.

TIA for any advice.

[ubuntu-uk] OO error in 10.10

I have OO 3.2 on Ubuntu 10.10. Today I get the fatal error message
The application cannot be started. Loading component library failed:

I've dug about on the OO and Ubuntu forums, only info I could find was
that creating a new user profile would cure this, but it doesn't - I
still get the same message.

I can use a live CD to access and print the file I need, but I'd like a
permanent cure!

[ubuntu-uk] Keyring password error

2011-10-13 Thread dianne reuby
I have 10.10 Ubuntu. Used my machine with no problems this morning. Just
switched back on and logged on to my account OK. But I get a message
that my login password and my keyring password don't match, and to enter
the password.

Are the admin password and keyring password usually the same? And what
can I have done to change the keyring password? Updates yesterday
included linux headers, and today I think was only Chrome.

Password and Encryption shows only one password, and that's login - but
it's blank, including date created. I can't reset - I don't know what
the old password is set to, as it says it isn't my admin password.

I did have three apport warnings this morning, one for a game that I
wasn't running, and two for apport itself. This is the log:

I mainly used the forums, and always the absolute beginners - there I
felt that I could ask any question, no matter how basic, and not be
worried about showing my ignorance.

Do we have an Ubuntu newcomers IRC channel that would be more
appropriate?

But I always felt IRC wasn't really the place to ask about problems -
the person with the answer may not be online, and a question would
pretty quickly scroll off the screen. In a forum it's there to be
answered whenever the experts called in.

[ubuntu-uk] Netbook Ubuntu v. plain Ubuntu

2011-02-04 Thread Dianne Reuby
A friend has asked me to look at her husbands netbook, which is running
Linux. He bought it from Tesco two years ago, so I think it probably
*is* Ubuntu.

His problems are mainly that it doesn't recognise USB devices when
they're plugged in, and it downloads updates but doesn't install them.
He wants to do more than email and web browsing, which is all he feels
he can do at the moment (it has shortcuts on the desktop for email and
firefox).

If it's two years old, and he hasn't upgraded, will it be pre-Unity? As
I've never used a netbook, only Ubuntu on desktops and laptops, will I
be able to find my way around it?

She thinks his cunning plan is to break it so he can buy a new one, but
I don't want to be the one that breaks it! :)

Yesterday I went to change it back, but the pre-installed background I'd

But do the updates change those pre-installed backgrounds? Can't see
that they would. Why bother? So where has it gone?

[ubuntu-uk] Open Office templates

I've got a couple of OO templates which I created, and on 3rd November I
updated them. (I know when I did it, the file has the date on it!) I
saved them with the same name.

If I use File New From template, or use the template button on the
toolbar, I get the old version. The only way I can get the latest
version is by choosing File templates organise and choosing the
template, then using Save As to create an .odt version rather than
saving it as an updated template.

I know that any day now I'm going to forget, and edit and save it,
overwriting the template. :(

So why is my templates dialogue box loading an old version? (I'm
assuming that this is connected with the auto backup.) And can I correct
it?

I hope to be outside (we have a large concrete canopy) to catch
passers-by (there's good footfall from the car parks and bus stops) so
if you're near Swindon come and say hello!

[ubuntu-uk] Flash problems in 10.04

2010-09-07 Thread Dianne Reuby
I've suddenly got problems with Flash - it was working fine until a few
days ago.

I have Flash 10.1.82.76ubuntu0.10.04.2 on Ubuntu 10.04, but YouTube and
other flash sites tell me I need to upgrade to the latest Flash version
10.

I've tried Flash-Aid, which seems to run OK but I still have the
problem. I've tried safe mode, with all extensions disabled, but still
get the problem.

Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic-pae
Gnome 2.30.2

It may have started after the last update that included Linux headers -
but if that's the cause I thought I would have seen more
comments/complaints here - trouble is I have only been doing none-flash
stuff on this machine for a few days, so not sure exactly when it
started. My graphics card is pretty basic - ATI Xpress 200, but it's
been OK with Flash.

TIA

Just got my laptop - that hasn't had the recent updates installed as I
haven't been using it, and Flash is still working perfectly.

Now I can't decide whether to install the upgrades or not!

As an aside to this - both my machines now only have Ubuntu on them, so
I don't have the GRUB screen when I start up. But what if I want to load
an old kernel (following update problems)? How can I do that?

Perhaps they haven't looked at the GCSE curriculum - I've been a

Also, most experts or enthusiasts I think still prefer to do IT rather

My daughter had 5 IT teachers in one year - one took their coursework to
Australia when he left, so she got very low marks. The next year I told
her brother to email his coursework to me from school - needless to say,
he didn't bother, the system crashed, no backup, no coursework, he too

And yet it can be exciting, school visits love looking at the old
machines, looking at how components and machines work, putting pieces

Darn, this has turned into a rant. But I do find it so depressing!

[Evolution] Evo freezes when loading

2010-08-26 Thread dianne reuby
Had this problem a few weeks ago, installed Tbird, and Evo started working
again. :) But it's back. The GUI loads, but all panes are empty. Mailbox panel
only shows search rather than my mailboxes. All buttons and icons are
unresponsive. I can close using x which gives me the not responding - force
quit dialogue.

I'm running Evo 2.28.3 on Ubuntu 10.04.

It was fine this morning, but when I switched on after lunch the problem was
back. I did have updates this morning , but nothing for Evo.

Any solutions?

[Evolution] Evo not responding following Ubuntu 10.04 update

2010-08-06 Thread dianne reuby
I used Evo this morning with no problems, ran the latest Ubuntu 10.04 updates
(which I'm ashamed to say I didn't make a note of! - but they included the
linux headers) and switched off. Now Evo loads, but doesn't show any mailboxes,
just the search in the mailbox pane. All I can click on is the x to close
the program, which tells me that it isn't responding, wait or force quit.

Same behaviour if I use the compose mail option - it loads, but I can't type
anything, and can only click to close, when I get the force quit option.

Anyone else had this?

Re: [Evolution] Evo closes when clicking on folders or emails

2010-05-11 Thread Dianne Reuby
 I'm running Evo 2.28.3 on Ubuntu 10.04
Evo keeps closing, apparently at random, when I click on a folder or
 email message.
I haven't been able to pin this down to a certain email or folder - it
seems to happen sometimes and not at others.
Is there a log file that I could view to try and track this down?

Thanks for the advice - I forgot about apport! I had it installed - here
are the logs from the last two crashes:

[16893.013910] evolution[1434]: segfault at 1366d1d8 ip 06ac965e sp

2.30.xx, not 2.28.3. How did you install evolution, or how did you
 install/upgrade ubuntu?

Downloaded the iso and did a clean install with format (I had to
repartition anyway, and I wanted to cure a few problems in 9.10)

Just looked in synaptic, and that lists 2.28.3 as the latest - so don't
know why I haven't got 2.30, another puzzle.

I'm off to post my bug :)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] web hosting recommendation

2010-05-09 Thread Dianne Reuby
I've used www.byethost.com (that's not a typo!) for four years - five
sites on free hosting, and one on paid. I've found their uptime
reliable, and speed good. Support is good even for free hosting as they
have a very active forum at http://byet.net/index.php where you can
often find the answer without resorting to tech support. When I have had
to contact them they've answered quickly and with useful info.

Paid hosting is on a monthly basis - you don't need to sign up for 12
months or more.

My webhosting company has let me down again, the mysql server is down for the
second time in fortnight and they don't seem to do any support outside of
office hours. Therefore I am looking to move hosts.

 I don't need a very advanced package, just apache/mysql/php, email so I don't
want to pay for (or need) a VPS. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

 Thanks

[ubuntu-uk] Min/max buttons on 10.04

2010-05-05 Thread Dianne Reuby
I'm confused - I've read about the min/max/close buttons being moved,
and I was quite happy, soon got used to it. But I changed to another
theme and they're back on the right.

Is it just that 10.04 is using some legacy themes which haven't been
updated? (These are in the pre-installed set, I haven't added any
myself).

[ubuntu-uk] Restoring with grsync

2010-05-04 Thread Dianne Reuby
I used grsync to restore my /home after a clean install of 10.04, but
although it restored the folders, it didn't restore the contents. They
were backed up OK though, so I copied them over manually.

I've looked at my settings, and they seem OK. I had ignore existing and
skip newer checked, but my /home was empty anyway so that shouldn't be a
problem.

Any suggestions on what I did wrong?

TIA
Dianne

[Evolution] Mail notification in Ubuntu 10.04

2010-05-04 Thread Dianne Reuby
I've recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04, which runs Evo 2.28.3

I have the email notification plugin enabled, but I only get a beep, not
a visual notification - this disappeared during the life of Ubuntu 9.10,
and I hoped it would be fixed in 10.04

Is there any way to set the notification icon to change on incoming
mail? If I'm not in the room I don't hear the beep, and I have to
remember to check. I know it's trivial, but it would be helpful! :)

The email notification applet is now part of the combined indicator
applet, so don't know if that's the problem.

[ubuntu-uk] Firefox loading at log-on

2010-04-18 Thread Dianne Reuby
Since the last round of updates towards the middle/end of last week,
whenever I log on, Firefox loads itself and opens the UbuntuOne login
page.

OK, I usually *do* want to run Firefox fairly soon after switching on,
but it's still an irritation! Anyone else had this?

I have Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9)
Gecko/20100401 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.9 GTB6

[ubuntu-uk] Info on CompTIA?

2010-04-13 Thread Dianne Reuby
OT really, but where else would I find so many IT people in one place?

Can anyone tell me anything about CompTIA? Someone on a (non-IT) forum
was asking before they pay for the course. This is from one of the sites
offering it:

CompTIA A+ is a universally accepted certification all around the
world and CompTIA certification has a solid reputation in the field of
IT and because of it's solid reputation in IT industry comptia
certifications leads for a bright career in IT.

Anyone tell me anything about it?
TIA
