About upgrade KVM

2010-05-27 Thread satimis

Hi folks,

KVM -virtualizer
host - Debian 5.0

This virtual machine has been running for sometimes. IIRC the KVM was
download from KVM website. Its version is quite old.

$ sudo kvm | head -1
QEMU PC emulator version 0.9.1 (kvm-72), Copyright (c) 2003-2008
Fabrice Bellard

$ apt-cache policy qemu-kvm
qemu-kvm:
  Installed: (none)

  Version table:
 0.12.4+dfsg-1~bpo50+1 0
  1 http://www.backports.org lenny-backports/main Packages

I tried to upgrade it on System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager;
- qemu-kvm
- qemu-kvm-dbg

On marking them to install following warning popup:-
Mark additional required changes?

To be removed
kvm

To be added
libasyncns0
libcap1
libpulse0
- end -

My questions are;

1)
On deleting the old package whether it would affect the running
virtual machine?

2)
Is there any way to come back in case of problem?

Please advise.  TIA

That's extremely old. You should update to a newer version.

Hi Anthony,

I found my problem was caused by running the new kernel of the host
(Debian 5.0 32 bit), causing all Ubuntu guests unable to boot. The
kernel has been upgraded recently.

I booted the old kernal

$ uname -a
Linux vm0.debian50 2.6.26-1-686 #1 SMP Fri Mar 13 18:08:45 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux

All Ubuntu guests revived (all 32 bit).

The new kernel is;
Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.26-2-686

Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit) can be installed without problem.

Anything can I try before upgrade qemu/KVM ? Thanks

Re: Question on stopping KVM start at boot

2010-03-13 Thread satimis

Hi Dustin,

Where shall I add -b option?  Thanks

modprobe -b says respect the blacklists. See:
 * http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/en/man8/modprobe.8.html

   -b --use-blacklist
  This option causes modprobe to apply the blacklist
commands in
  the configuration files (if any) to module names as
well. It  is

  usually used by udev(7).

So you would change the lines that say if modprobe ... to if
modprobe -b ...

Your advice works for me. Thanks

sudo update-rc.d kvm enable

to enable it again.

to install this Virtual Machine. The steps worked without problem. But
I have following points can't be resolved:-

1)
I can't find the option on vmbuilder for selecting the packages to
install. (no GUI)

2)
If the OS to be installed is an iso image what command shall I run,
especially Windows?

3)
I tried to run rdesktop to connect the VM without success. I have no
idea what shall I replace for abcd, e.g

$ rdesktop -a 16 -N 192.168.0.200:abcd

192.168.0.200 is the host ip address.

4)
Finally I install virt-manager. It works to connect the VM

so if you get this error also and you have a redhat centos or fedora

1)
chkconfig - is a small package to update and query runlevel info for
system services

--level 35 specifies runlevels 3 and 5

That means on next booting KVM won't start automatically.

To start KVM after boot manually run;

# /etc/init.d/kvm start
(I'm now on Debian box. Fedora 12 may differ.)

2)
To restore KVM to its original setup then run;

# chkconfig --level 35 kvm on

On next booting KVM will start automatically.

Re: How to convert a physical drive (running Vista) as VM to be run on KVM

2010-02-16 Thread satimis

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your advice.

Quoting Thomas Beinicke thomas.beini...@fsd-web.de:

- snip -

When you dd off a device it will always be raw format, kvm will
recognize it
as raw even though the extension is qcow2. If you really want a qcow
 container

you have to convert it with qemu-img.

I made following test before;

$ sudo qemu-img convert VM/VMWIN/vm07_vista.qcow2 -O raw /dev/sdb
qemu-img: Error while formatting '/dev/sdb'

I don't understand why it needs to format the hard drive? I need to
keep this hard drive including its OS without touched. Please help.
TIA

Will /etc/libvirt/qemu/vm07_vista.xml be created automatically running
above command?

For hard drives you should use something like this:
-drive file=hda.qcow2,boot=on

Sorry I don't follow. Please explain in more detail.

Other advice noted with thanks.

Re: Convert KVM to VirtualBox

2010-02-04 Thread satimis

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your advice.

Just qemu-img convert the image to raw and use that as disk image in
vbox. Make sure you configure your vm to the same hw as on kvm (apic,
piix3, etc)

Could you please explain in more detail ... configure your vm to the
same hw as on kvm (apic, piix3, etc)? The image file of vm is
*.qcow2. I'll run VirtualBox on KVM if possible. The former is
desktop virtualization. Ah a further thought can convert vm across
PCs? That is VirtualBox is running on another PC.

But seriously, why would anyone want to go this direction?

I can't get sound work on vm. Therefore I expect trying VirturlBox to
check whether it can sort out this problem. I'll run VirtualBox on
KVM if possible. The former is desktop virtualization.

Hi Liang,

Thanks for your advice and link.

Host - Debian 5.0
KVM
libvirt

run  kvm-nbd  VM/vm30.qcow2, modprobe nbd
nbd-client localhost 1024 /dev/nbd0

then you can use /dev/nbd0 as a block device like /dev/sda

I've write a little essay on how to install Debian on kvm image, FYI:

http://blog.chinaunix.net/u/7667/showart_2112267.html

I can't find kvm-nbd and nbd-client.  I have nbd installed already.

$ yum list nbd
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Available Packages
nbd.x86_642.9.13-1.fc12   fedora

$ which kvm-nbd
/usr/bin/which: no kvm-nbd in
(/usr/lib64/qt-3.3/bin:/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/home/satimis/bin)

$ which qemu-nbd

(/usr/lib64/qt-3.3/bin:/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/home/satimis/bin)

I suppose qemu-nbd = kvm-nbd ?  Where is nbd-client ?

Any advice?  TIA

I've made business cards with GIMP: I wrote a script to generate an
image of the right aspect ratio, then another script to take one
such image and turn it into an image with the right aspect ratio
to be a US-Letter sized page to print with gutenprint. (It also
does various other types of labels, not just business cards.)
You might have to adjust the offsets a bit for your templates
and printer. Here are the scripts:

http://shallowsky.com/software/gimplabels/

To be honest, it's probably easier most of the time to use a program
that's designed for making labels and business cards, like gLabels;
or design one business card in gimp then import it into gLabels for
printing (or Open Office, even). Anyway, lots of options.
[/quote]

Hi Akkana,

Thanks for your advice and script.

It is quite interesting. I can finish preparing and printing simple business
cards on OOWriter. For professional cards with graphics, I'm now search a
solution to edit it on different layers and merge them after finish. If I
found a solution to the same then I can edit professional business cards on
OOWriter. Otherwise I have to do the work on GIMP or Inkscape and import
the image on OOWriter for printing.

I did lot of graphics editing 10 years ago before turning to Server side,
working on CorelDraw, Corel PhotoPaint, PhotoShop, Illustratior, etc.
Because I don't expect injecting too much time and effort on this simple
task, I started searching around for a simple solution to finish the work
with a few clicks.

I suppose scribus is similar to PageMaker, FrameWork, Ventura, etc., a
desktop publisher. I went across it before but never use it. I ran
PageMaker while I lived in Windows world long time ago.

Actually the bar preventing me to edit professional business cards on
OOoWriter is without layers there. I can insert picture/image on its
template as background making it x% transparent according to my requirement.
I can edit text on its top. But I can't insert another picture/image on
top. Unless I treat it on OOoDraw. In this way I prefer going back to GIMP
to do the job. I'm stuck there.

 not sure if runs well on
 windows though (they've been working on that for a while).

I'm running 100% Open Source packages here on Linux/Unix boxes.  I don't
have Windows box. To running Windows application I need wine. It is in a
very rare case except IE, the buggy Internet browser. Some Internet sites
require visitors running IE. It is rather funny.

Re: Problem on installing OpenBSD - disks not found (SOLVED)

2007-05-06 Thread satimis
Hi Nick,

Tks for your advice and URL.

Finally I figured out the problem coming from one of the RAM sticks. After
replacing the questioned stick with another old RAM stick, the old P-II
Intel box is now working.

Linux LiveCD can start and worked.

Ran OBSD 4.1 to start Shell.

# disklabel /dev/wd0j
# /dev/wd0j:

OBSD 4.1 installer found wd0 and started fdisk. I just stopped there.

  Previously on Windows I did this trick, connecting the HD to IDE first.
  Then the HD was detected. After installation completed reconnected the
 HD
  to the Controller.

 if that worked in Windows, I'm guessing you were using Win9x, and probably
 fell back to BIOS support...probably horrible performance, but better than
 nothing.  Kinda.

WinME, IIRC.  It worked.

 Or simply use your on-board adapter. For a 10G drive, probably not
 huge amounts of difference in performance.

I'll do that if I can't solve the problem.

Update and install new packages immediate after installation

Hi folks,

FreeBSD-6.2-amd64

Just finished installing the captioned OS which is now working. There is no
major desktop running on the OS, such as KDE/Gnome/Xfce, as well as some
other necessary applications. I'll erase the OS soon to make another
installation with new partitions arrangement. On the 2nd round I'll also
make the same installation.

Please advise after installation completed how to read on CVS on the website

how to startup. I expect first to update the system before doing any

 It depends entirely on what you are planning to run on that
 machine. The kind of CPU is pretty much irrelevant.

 For example, if you're planning to run it as DNS server,
 router and/or packet filter, then about 128 to 256 MB will
 probably suffice.  ;-)

Why JBoss home page does not starte automatically?

I think I have to create a script to start JBoss including;
  | export JAVA_HOME=/home/satimis/jrockit-R26.4.0-jdk1.5.0_06
  | sudo jboss-4.0.4.GA/bin/run.sh

Hi folks,

I have jboss-4.0.4.GA-src.tar.gz download and decompressed it with;

# tar zxpf jboss-4.0.4.GA-src.tar.gz

# cd jboss-4.0.4.GA-src/docbook-support/

looking around in this directory and can't ascertain which doc shall I refer
for installing JBoss application server. Please shed me some light. TIA

[jboss-user] [Beginners Corner] - A beginner seeking for advice

2006-08-09 Thread satimis
Hi folks,

Just joined this forum. JBoss is completely new to me. I expect to explore it
getting to know its application.  Please advise;

1) Which packages shall I download for testing at start?

2) I shall run Ubuntu-alternate-6.06 as OS. Unless I must build the OS myself
then I shall head LFS - BLFS. Can I use OS off the shelf?

3) Do I need Eclipse to run JBoss application?

4) What will be the package on JBoss equivalent to Crystal Vision and Xcelsius,
dashboard, of Business Object

5) Are JBoss packages available on 64 bits?

TIA

Hi PeterJ,

Tks for your advice and URL

The link
http://www.alexandriasc.com/software/JavaService/index.html
providing Javaservice is not working anymore. Any alternative? Tks.

anonymous wrote : I run on Fedora Core 5, so I cannot comment directly on
Ubuntu though I recall seeing some forum posts from Ubuntu users. . The JVM
that comes with Linux distros is usually insufficient to run JBoss (or any app
server), so you should also get a JDK from http://java.sun.com. A 1.4.2 JDK is
fine, but if you plan to do any EJB3 work, you should get the 1.5 JDK.
I also have FC5_64/32 bit boxes.  On FC5_64 box running;
$ yum search Java 5 LVM
and
$ yum search jboss

They can't be found. Any repo carry with them. Or I have to download them
from respective website?

anonymous wrote : 3) No, but most people developing for JBoss use Eclipse or
NetBeans. There is a JBoss-specific Eclipse plug-in at
http://labs.jboss.com/portal/jbosside/?prjlist=false.If I understand your

application.
