I got the following error message while building DEV300_m3 on Windows XP.

...

FileOpenDlg.cxx
C:/cygwin\home\jeongkyu\DEV300_m3\fpicker\source\win32\filepicker\FileOpenDlg.cx
x(142) : error C2065: 'OFN_DONTADDTORECENT' : undeclared identifier
dmake: Error code 2, while making '../../../wntmsci10.pro/slo/FileOpenDlg.obj'

...

FYI, DEV300_m2 was successfully built with same environment, so that I guess
some changes between m2 and m3 may cause build break. Any ideas or workaround?

It has not got effect on UI, but there are garbage lines in
officecfg/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/UI/localize.sdf:

less Effects.xcu | grep Tansi - no lines (no Transitions node point)
less localize.sdf | grep Tansi - several lines related to Effents.xcu

All of correct lines in place:
less Effects.xcu | grep Transi - has Transitions node pont

So we should remove unnecessary sdf lines that contains:
..Effects.UserInterface.Tansitions. string.

Also we should check all Tansitions translated strings live in Transitions
translations.

I just checked the description of cws hro34 and it says Integration of Vista
File Dialog and Shell Preview. New Windows SDK needed...depends on usage of VC8
compiler..

Does this mean that Windows Vista SDK or above is needed to build DEV300_m3? I
also wonder if VS.NET 2003 compiler works or not for DEV300_m3.

When I sum a column with the SUM function in the function toolbar and insert a
row the SUM function is updated automatically. If I choose the last row (in
which the result is) and go with a right click on 'insert row' the row is
inserted but the SUM function is not being updated. That results in wrong
calculations.

@discoleo

1.) DPI and LPI are printer measures

I strongly disagree with this statement in the context of a bitmap export. You
have a print-oriented view, but this bug is not about printing it's about
exporting to a file so the target are other computer programs not just printers.

For a computer program DPI (as used both by proprietary programs such as Visio
and FLOSS programs such as the Gimp) is the ratio between the image dimension in
pixels (pixel being the basic bitmap unit) and the image dimension in inches
(physical unit, used to measure other parts of the document). Without

LPI does not exist in this context. It may be relevant for printers but not at
the computer stage.

So when you resize a bitmap or export to a bitmap file, you need to display
three sets of values

1. the image size in pixels
2. the image size in physical units (inches or millimeters depending on the
locale)
3. their ratio in DPI

Changing 1. changes 2., changing 2. changes 1., changing 3. changes 2.

The user can follow several strategies to select the DPI value:
1. size the image as on-screen, using the DPI ratio of his current screen
(Current OO.o strategy. Unsuitable for many usages but valid in some contexts
2. size the image for a generic streen target, using common screen DPI values
such as 75, 96 or 100 dpi
2. size the image with a print target in mind, using common print DPI values
(150, 300, 600)
3. just cram the maximum number of pixels into a specific physical size, avoid
any dithering in the current program to preserve pixel info, rework the bitmap
in something else. This will result in very strange one-of-a-kind DPI values but
is a valid use-case newertheless

jarkod,
It would be easy if you could explain why =+5+6 will cause a problem for you -
as in annoying.
mathematically, 5+6 is same as +5+6.
Replacing the first '+' with '=' might not be a problem (like excel does ++5+6
= =+5+6) - but why is it needed?

thanks,

1.) DPI and LPI are printer measures

I strongly disagree with this statement in the context of a bitmap export. You
have a print-oriented view, but this bug is not about printing it's about
exporting to a file so the target are other computer programs not just printers.

For a computer program DPI (as used both by proprietary programs such as Visio
and FLOSS programs such as the Gimp) is the ratio between the image dimension in
pixels (pixel being the basic bitmap unit) and the image dimension in inches
(physical unit, used to measure other parts of the document). If you don't
associate the correct DPI info to an image file conversion to a pixel oriented
space (vector export to bitmap) or to a physical unit oriented space (bitmap
insertion in Office document, printing a bitmap file) will give unexpected
results.

LPI does not exist in this context. It may be relevant for printers but not at
the computer bitmap export stage.

So when you resize a bitmap or export to a bitmap file, you need to expose three
sets of values

1. the image size in pixels
2. the image size in physical units (inches or millimeters depending on the
locale)
3. their ratio in DPI

Changing 1. changes 2., changing 2. changes 1., changing 3. changes 2.

The user can follow several strategies to select the DPI value:
1a. size the image as on-screen, using the DPI ratio of his current screen
(Current OO.o strategy. Unsuitable for many usages but valid in some contexts
1b. size the image for a generic streen target, using common screen DPI values
such as 75, 96 or 100 dpi
2. size the image with a print target in mind, using common print DPI values
(150, 300, 600). (2400 in this context is totally insane, you don't map a pixel
to a print point, what printers do is take the bitmap file DPI value to compute
it's expected print size, and then interpolate pixels in print points to respect
this size)
3. just cram the maximum number of pixels into a specific physical size, avoid
any interpolation in the current program to preserve pixel info, rework the
bitmap in somewhere else. This will result in very strange one-of-a-kind DPI
values but is a valid use-case newertheless

Therefore a good bitmap export dialog (not a print dialog disguised into bitmap
export) would look like this

Export
 ( ) Selected (o) Visible area ( ) Whole page¹

¹ Usually one does not want to export huge bands of nothing around a drawing

Image size
 (o) Custom
 Width [ ]
Height [ ] [link¹] Unit dropdown²

¹ linking locks the ratio means changing width also changes height to
preserve their ratio
² with pixel as default, physical units as alternatives. Changing the unit
converts the Width/Height values to the new unit

( ) Scale to standard paper size
Size A0,A4... dropdown
Margins¹
  Top [ ] Bottom [ ] Left [ ] Right [ ] ²

¹ When you target a paper format, you need margins
² In locale-dependant physical units, since standard formats use physical
units

Resolution
 ( ) Custom
 X Resolution [ ]
 Y Resolution [ ]¹ [link²] unit³

¹ Yes it is valid to have different values for X and Y in this context
² Linking forces the same value on the other dimension when one is modified
³ Unit being pixel/inches by default (what is commonly called dpi) with
pixel/mm… as alternatives. Changing the unit changes the value of X/Y (converts
them to the new unit)

 ( ) Use screen/web-oriented resolution
 dpi value dropdown¹

¹ Default value: current screen settings
   Alternates: usual screen DPI values (72dpi, 75dpi, 96dpi, 100dpi, 125dpi)
If scale to standard size was not selected before changing a value
there does not change the image size in pixels but the image size in physical
units.

 ( ) Use print-oriented resolution¹
 Resolution dpi value dropdown²

¹ Auto-selected if Scale to standard paper size is selected before
² Default value: last selected one, 150dpi initially otherwise
Alternates: usual print DPI values (300, 600, etc)
If scale to standard size was not selected before changing a value
there does not change the image size in pixels but the image size in physical
units.

And then you have the usual transparency/interpolation algorithm options this
bug is not concerned with

As with Open Office installation downloads for versions 2.2 , 2.3 , 2.3.1 from
the Open Office.org home page I have found each

time that my F-Secure Firewall has encountered a problem and will close .
If I dont spot the red `X ' in system tray icon or the

fact that 3/4 of the F-secure processes are no longer running I run on the
Internet apparently unprotected .
Has anybody else encountered this problem. I am running Win XP SPK2 and its
fully upto date.
I have been running this firewall suite for several years and only this
download is capable of doing this.

I checked with 2.4 RC5 Multilingual Italian version WIN XP:
[680m11(Build9283)] also using Lithuanian, Spanish, German, Dutch UI. It seems
that translation is inconsistent.

But Support should be understood in all those languages, so that I do not see
any urgency for action.

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Mar 16 12:53:22 +

- changing issue type back to DEFECT: Not being able to use the accelerators
which work everywhere else is clearly a such.
- adding usability keyword
- changing target back to 3.0. 3.x is a way too unspecified target for such a
  usability issue

fs-pl: The start center should have access to the SystemWindow it lives in
(Window::GetSystemWindow). The system window can be asked for its menu bar
(SystemWindow::GetMenuBar). The menu bar can be asked for all its top-level
items, whose item text can be passed into MnemonicGenerator::RegisterMnemonic. A
subsequent call to MnemonicGenerator::CreateMnemonic will then create new
mnemonics for all texts, which don't use the ones already burnt in the menu bar.
This approach is the very same we use in the database application, and works
fine for quite a while now.
Of course, there's always the possibility that the mnemonic generator cannot
find a free mnemonic, but that's bad luck, then.

Care to take back this issue?

This is the way how it should work:
Doubleclick chart
contextmenu Data Ranges
Tab Data Series
In the left part of the dialog move the series with ▲ and ▼. The upper positions
are shown as columns

This works without problems in OOo2.4rc2. Please try it in your version.

It would be nice if we could select the notes we want to see. Quite a few
criteria could be used to filter the visible/invisible notes :

- Allow to see only the notes from the selected authors
- Allow to filter on the date
- Allow to filter on the content of the note
- Allow to filter on the content of the text to which the note is related
- others ?

Once a filter would be applied, we should navigate only through the displayed
notes (in the navigator).

Note : maybe this filter box could also be shared with the current changes
dialog.

It would be nice to gather the function from the notes and revision in a
toolbar. Here are a few features that could be put in it:

Managing notes

- insert/delete note
- accept/reject revision

Navigation functions

- call the filter dialog (see issue 87085)
- go to the next note
- go to the next note of the currently selected author ()

Visual effects

- select color for a given author

other ?

Some Mac users ask for the possibility to dock separated applications in the
dock.

e.g. : a dedicated icon, when clicked, opening always a Calc sheet ( or Impress
or Writer .. )

I'll attach an archive, containing Applescripts, and working for dev300_m2 or
superior ( 3.x branch )

To do : replace applescripts

I think this is a regression; I have certainly noticed it only in the last
couple of months.

If I use a macro to replace all italic formatted text in a document with plain
text surrounded by the equivalent html markup, a spurious x is added at the
end of the replacement string.

Steps to repeat:

(1) write a document containing two or more stretches of italicised text.
(2) run the following macro

Expected result: the italic text ranges are converted to plain text and given
tags at each end that say em and /em

Actual result: the italic text ranges are converted to plain text and given tags
at each end that say em and x/em
Note the extra, spurious x

The macro that does this:

Sub ital_to_HTML_Tags
dim oDoc,oRD,numfound
dim italicargs(0)as new com.sun.star.beans.PropertyValue
dim normalargs(0)as new com.sun.star.beans.PropertyValue
oDoc=thiscomponent
oRD=oDoc.createReplaceDescriptor()
italicargs(0).Name=CharPosture
italicargs(0).Value=com.sun.star.awt.FontSlant.ITALIC
oRD.ValueSearch=True
oRD.SearchWords=True
normalargs(0).Name=CharPosture
normalargs(0).Value=com.sun.star.awt.FontSlant.NONE
oRD.setSearchAttributes(italicargs())
oRD.setReplaceAttributes(normalargs())
oRD.setSearchString(.+)
oRD.setReplaceString(em/em)
oRD.SearchRegularExpression=True
oRD.SearchStyles=False
numfound=oDoc.ReplaceAll(oRD)
' msgbox(numfound)
end Sub

An equivalent macro to replace bold formatting with b tags has the same bug.

[graphics-issues] [Issue 4499] Export to bitmap file has f ixed DPI (resolution)

... DPI [...] is the ratio between the image dimension in pixels [...]
and the image dimension in inches

This is mostly nonsense. DPI was and is *dots per inch* defining the
characteristics of an output device (more correctly DPI is used for printers,
PPI for monitors and SPI for scanners).

DPI is the measure of how many dots of ink or toner a printer can place within
an inch (or centimeter), and not pixels per inch. [A printer dot is not a pixel,
see the explanatory section at the end.]

It never defines a picture characteristic. [If you wish, you can view it
somewhat the other way round: the image dimension in inches when printed is the
ratio between the image resolution in pixels and the LPI for that printer, where
LPI is usually much smaller than DPI, and only for pure black-and-white lineart,
LPI = DPI. Unfortunately, LPI does not accurately reflect inkjets, because these
machines use a different error diffusion dithering technology.]

DPI is a *hardware* characteristic of the output device (more precisely of the
printers halftone grid for laserjet printers). It is a physical characteristic
of the printer.

What you are referring to is probably more closely related to PPI: pixels per
inch. IF people are more comfortable with PPI, than lets use PPI instea of DPI.
[The printing-industries term for resolution is LPI, lines per inch. I opt for
PPI however, because it is likely that LPI will increase the misunderstanding.
Even Adobe chooses PPI in its products. Though, please remember that PPD printer
descriptor files contain the LPI values.]

HOWEVER:
 - PPI is very different from DPI
 - PPI requirements are much smaller than the hardware DPI of the output device
[they are very distinct measures, so it makes little sense to compare
them, BUT if you want to print in colour on a 600 DPI printer,
it will suffice to have a 60-100 PPI image]

Even IF you consider editing the image in an external application prior to
printing, it is enough to add only a 50% to 100% overhead over the capabilities
of the output device. Therefore, IF you plan to print on an 100 LPI printer,
then 150-200 PPI will suffice most of the time, and 300 PPI will almost certain
be overkill. [Please ignore anything that sounds bigger than 400 because any
search for such a printer or output device will fail.]

Just as a real example: high quality art books and glossy magazines are usually
printed at 200 LPI. IF for reasons of prepress editing you add some buffer
pixels (50%), you will end with 200 + 100 = 300 PPI images. Therefore, eveything
that is above 300 PPI (LPI) is just a colossal waste of time and resources for
over 99.99% of users.

[Higher SPIs are needed for the scanner, especially if the original image gets
resized, but this is a different story.]

=

The next section tries to explain the vast difference between DPI and LPI.

RATIONALE:
==
Now, unfortunately, printers can print only a dot of a single color, be it black
(BW printers), or either one of black, cyan, magenta or yellow dots. They can
not print any other colour (including gray colors). So, you can not print
directly any of the 16.8 million colours in the RGB colourspace, but just some 4
colours (on some printers 6 colours).

To actually achieve any of the many other colours, the printers will print a
grid of dots consisting of these fundamental colors. Therefore, for every pixel
in the original image, the printer will need to print up to 100 dots (and even
more) to get a similar colour to the original colour.
For example, some grid sizes for a 600 dpi printer are:
1x1 shows 2 shades (black or white, 600 dpi Line art) **
** 1x1 is not halftones, it is simply called line art mode.
6x6 shows 37 shades of gray, reducing image resolution to 600/6 = 100 lpi
7x7 shows 50 shades of gray, reducing image resolution to 600/7 = 85 lpi
8x8 shows 65 shades of gray, reducing image resolution to 600/8 = 75 lpi
10x10 shows 101 shades of gray, reducing image resolution to 600/10 = 60 lpi
[This applies also after editing a low-colour image, because most editing
effects will introduce new colours - so you can't print in lineart anymore.]

Also, newer printers advertising resolutions of 1,200 DPI and higher, while
partially correct, are highly misleading. They are still bound to 300 (360) LPI,
therefore diverting the usefulness of DPI values.

For further details, see also:

http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/intermediate/a/measure_lpi.htm
http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/intermediate/a/measure_dpi.htm
http://www.scantips.com/basics3b.html
[Note: imagesetters mentioned in the articles are very different machines!]

This is why I strongly advocate the use of pragmatic values:

... DPI [...] is the ratio between the image dimension in pixels [...]

This is mostly nonsense. DPI was and is *dots per inch* defining the

Your forget that for a computer program a screen is an output device and the
dots of this output device are pixels.

For a computer screen ppi = dpi

Microsoft (Windows, Office) X.org (X Window) GNOME (The Gimp) Mozilla Foundation
(Firefox) all use dpi for what you call ppi.

In the context of a bitmap export (what this issue is about) dpi as printer
resolution makes no sense. Bitmap export is about dpi as ppi (if you prefer the
term). Bitmap image formats label dpi what you call ppi. I'm 99% sure the
original reporter would be very surprised to see you misinterpret his dpi
request as dpi as printer resolution.

I personally prefer the programs that display it as a pixel/inch value instead
of using user confusing dpi/ppi abbreviations but I've seen enough of them to
recognize what dpi in bitmap export context means.

Users unfortunately do not know much of preprint and printing. And if they know
something, they most likely misunderstand it. Therefore, while it is sometimes
useful to allow users finely control all parameters, I suggest a more pragmatic
approach to let users (force them ;-) ) use the desirable parameters.

This will ultimately enhance their productivity and create higher quality
products (in the end making the end users more happy).

In general, when I (or a user) create a work, I will have to decide beforehand,
what is the purpose of this work:
A.) Display it on screen
B.) Print it

After deciding this, one can establish the target LPI (or PPI): 72 PPI vs
75-150-200 LPI (for pure BW lineart, one could indeed choose 600 LPI).

Then I decide the dimension of the work (in cm, or in inch, or any valid
measure).

Having both PPI and dimensions, will automatically result in the pixels needed
in the raster image. I wouldn't go the other way round: deciding on PPI and/or
image size based on pixels.

Because Draw is a vector-graphics processing program, pixels don't make much
sense either.

So, while it is useful to display the dimension of the resulting raster image in
MB, and sometimes also the size in pixels, I won't bother much in putting great
emphasis in finely controlling these values. The user should be educated in the
proper way of creating high quality work. [Pixels are really useful only when
displaying on screen, so this is probably another useful option to choose from
at the beginning: onscreen vs printed work. When onscreen is selected, then
instead of size or PPI use resolution in pixels.]

I'm afraid you display a distinct lack of understanding of what an Office suite
is used for. Sure an office suite user print documents. But that's far from the
only or even principal use. Most office documents will never see preprint or
even be printed at all (in the impress case). So over-specializing the bitmap
export for print-oriented people like you is a bad idea.

I suggest a more pragmatic approach to let users (force them ;-) )
 use the desirable parameters.

That's not a pragmatic approach that's making impossible the use-cases you may
not care about but other OO.o do need.

In general, when I (or a user) create a work, I will have to decide
beforehand, what is the purpose of this work:
 A.) Display it on screen
 B.) Print it

This is explicit in my proposal

After deciding this, one can establish the target LPI (or PPI): 72 PPI vs
75-150-200 LPI (for pure BW lineart, one could indeed choose 600 LPI).

This is also taken care of in my proposal

Then I decide the dimension of the work (in cm, or in inch, or any valid
 measure).

This is also possible in my proposal, except it considers pixels a valid
dimension unit, because that's the unit most bitmap image users care about (or
they wouldn't be using a bitmap format)

Having both PPI and dimensions, will automatically result in the pixels needed
 in the raster image.

This will work in my proposal

I wouldn't go the other way round: deciding on PPI and/or
 image size based on pixels.

You wouldn't but others would wich is why it needs to work too

Because Draw is a vector-graphics processing program, pixels don't make much
 sense either.

When you export to bitmap, pixels are everything. If you don't care about them
you don't need to do a bitmap export.

would be nice to harmonize writer and calc a little regarding notes if you agree
with these changes as well

- add Strg-Alt-N to insert a new note

- change color from current one to a gradient from COL_AUTHOR1_LIGHT to
COL_AUTHOR1_DARK (from color.hxx)

In regards to writer behaviour and new spreadsheet sharing functionality it
would probably also make sense to add different note colors for different
authors

[graphics-issues] [Issue 4499] Export to bitmap file has f ixed DPI (resolution)

2008-03-16 Thread discoleo
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=4499

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Mar 16 19:19:31 +
2008 ---
I'm afraid you display a distinct lack of understanding of what
an Office suite is used for. Sure an office suite user print documents.
But that's far from the only or even principal use.
Most office documents will never see preprint or even be printed at all
(in the impress case). So over-specializing the bitmap export for
print-oriented people like you is a bad idea.

I have created lots of presentations myself and seen well over thousand during
my life (though most in a competitor's program). ;-)

A.) IF you don't print the document, why do you need PPI (or LPI or DPI)?

It amazes me how users make simple things look complicated. IF the only thing
the user does is to view the image onscreen, then pixels is everything he ever
wanted (and color depth - much neglected, but even more important than
resolution).

This is the reason why I wrote (in brackets, its true) that the first step is to
decide if the work is for print or onscreen viewing. Becuase for onscreen
viewing we don't need dimension in inches (or mm, or something else) and we
don't need PPIs either. So lets make it simple: give only resolution in pixels.

On the other hand, IF the user decides that the work will be printed, than 2
completely different parameters become relevant: dimension in length-units (mm
or inches, ...) and the targeted output resolution (LPI). This becomes a
different story.

B.) DPI for monitors
You forget that for a computer program a screen is an output device
and the dots of this output device are pixels.

For a computer screen ppi = dpi

While dpi is sometimes misused for monitors, you can't set a monitor DPI for
your image, because for every monitor and monitor resolution, this is a
different value. So, how do you assign a range of values to something. Indeed,
what a complex question.

I can view an image in 1024*768 and using your definition will get a specific
value for DPI, then change my graphics card resolution to 1200*1024, and
voila, for the same image and monitor I get a different DPI. ;-)

[Just to confuse matters further, there are 0.25 mm dots pitch monitors, but
this varies between 0.24 mm in very good monitors to 0.27 mm in poorer ones.
Additionally, every user uses different monitor settings, and the PPI will
vary greatly from 800*600 to 1600*1200 resolutions. So, my recommendation: just
ignore the PPI whenever the work is intended solely for onscreen viewing.]

C.) Just a short comment on color-depth: this much neglected feature is more
important than resolution itself. This is why an image displayed on a 72 PPI
monitor looks so much better than even if printed on a 1.200 DPI printer.

In the RGB colorspace are some 16.8 million colours. Arguably, even a good
monitor is not able to display all these colours (but neither the human eye can
discern them all), but a printer's CMYK colorspace is greatly diminished in
comparison even with a monitor.

This issue becomes also important when editing images using various software.
The Gimp was mentioned previously, unfortunately, it can handle only 24
bit-colors. This is relevant when performing image-processing in hingh end
settings, where 8bit/channel does not suffice: 12 and 16-bit per channel is much
better, because intermediate calculations might use values that exceed the
possibilities of an 8 bit number. This is especially tragic with Gimp, because
some years back, someone (or a corporation ? - forgot it) provided some patches
to extend Gimps capabilities (I think to 16 bits per channel), but in one of the
greatest shortsightednesses, the developers refused to implement them.

So, when exporting a rasterised graphic, at least as important as the spatial
resolution is also the colour resolution. When I teach image processing, I do
some little experiments with students: take an image and reduce the spatial
resolution vs reduce the colour resolution. You may see yourself what dramatic
effects colour resolution has.

the row re-appears after saving and reloaing the file, hence it seems to be a

[graphics-issues] [Issue 4499] Export to bitmap file has f ixed DPI (resolution)

A.) IF you don't print the document, why do you need PPI (or LPI or DPI)?

Again DPI/PPI is used to scale between pixel-space and physical unit space.
Correct DPI is what will make your bitmap file to have the right size when
inserted in another Office document.

Also it's customary to have strict DPI value rules when creating a set of
materials. These rules can be print-oriented, web oriented or something else
entirely and letting the user choose the exact DPI he needs is a requirement of
any serious bitmap-producing graphic application.

While dpi is sometimes misused for monitors, you can't set a monitor DPI for
your image, because for every monitor and monitor resolution, this is a
 different value.

You're lacking imagination, labs of screens with the same characteristics are
not that uncommon. Also it's not unheard-of to prepare material for the system
currently been used. In this case the exact dpi value is well known.

C.) Just a short comment on color-depth: this much neglected feature is more
 important than resolution itself.

Feel free to open a separate issue. In crappy hardware corp-land, your colours
will suck whatever color-depth is chosen. The Gimp will be fixed way before this
situation changes, since calibrating screens/printers is on no one's radar yet
(and in fact the hardware is getting worse in this respect).

I checked with 2.4 RC5 Multilingual French version WIN XP:

tillmo:
Can you reproduce that effect with a new document? I would like to eliminate any
possibility that only that document is damaged.

I am trying to build DEV300_m3 with VC++ 2008 Express on *Korean version of
Windows XP*. Unfortunately, it broke in openssl with following errors.
...
.\crypto\x509v3\v3_pcia.c : error C2220: warning treated as error - no 'object'
file generated
.\crypto\x509v3\v3_pcia.c : warning C4819: The file contains a character that
cannot be represented in the current code page (949). Save the file in Unicode
format to prevent data loss
NMAKE : fatal error U1077: 'c:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~1.0\VC\bin\cl.exe' : return
code'0x2'
Stop.
dmake: Error code 2, while making './wntmsci11.pro/misc/build/so_built_openssl'
...

I found the file has its authors name in header comment and Korean code page
does not like it. In another modules, this usually gives warning but does not
break build. However, openssl has more strict compile option which does not
allow warning and it breaks build.

To make build successful, I had to converting the encoding of the files below
into cp949 (with discarding unconvertible characters). After fixing these files,
openssl was built successfully.

.\crypto\x509v3\v3_pci.c
.\crypto\x509v3\v3_pcia.c

Another solution for me was to change default system language. After changing it
into en-US (and rebooting), the build of openssl could be done without errors. I
believe this is a safe way to build OOo, but may be too much for some
non-Western developer unless they have dedicated machine only for building OOo.

The last option I can think of is to change compile option of openssl so that
build does not break with warnings.

I am not sure which is the best way to handle code page issue, but I believe it
should be addressed somehow.

Hello,

Version 2.3 (and 2.4rc5) of OpenOffice is always crashing if I use the command
Kill (delete file) or Name (move file) whereat the url is a file on the FTP
server.
Example: Kill ftp://login:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/filename

Using Openofice 2.0, all goes fine.

Is this a bug?
Thanks and regards

I can reproduce the effect with a new file as follows:
1. insert a table with 6 rows and 4 columns
2. merge the cells rows 4-6, column 1
3. merge the cells rows 1-3, column 1
4. mark the two merged cells
5. with Table - Table Properties - Text flow, change Text direction to
Right-to-left (vertical)
6. merge the cells rows 1-2, column 1

The effect also appears if after step 5, you change the text direction back to
the normal setting. However, if you just undo step 5 with ctrl-z, the effect
does not appear.

I've got some MS Excel files which I tried to open in OOo RC4, 5, and 6. They
have been created with Excel. Calc opens those files but then I save them
(as .xls) and try to open them again Calc quits. The same thing happens in
Windows and Linux. OOo Calc 2.3 (2.3.1 - the one that ships with Kubuntu)
saves and opens those files without a problem.

In Writer's unusual formula expression language, functions do not require
parentheses around their argument list. It is acceptable to write
  =sum 10|20
giving the result: 30.

However, if the user writes
  =sum 10|20 * 2
the likely expectation, based on experience with other expression languages, is
the result 60. I.e. the function call with its argument list is evaluated before
the arithmetic operator. This is not the case. Writer evaluates this expression
as sum(10|20*2) = 50.

To avoid this, the user must be experienced enough to debug the problem and add
the necessary parentheses:
=sum(10|20) * 2
or
=(sum 10|20)*2

This is made more difficult because the function list in the formula bar
supplies only the function name, with no parentheses, and they are not required
for correct syntax, so there is no hint that they may be needed in a case like
this.

Perhaps the precedence of function calls could be raised to give the more usual
and expected order of evaluation.

Alternatively, perhaps the function dropdown could insert a set of parentheses,
as a hint that they can be used and may be necessary.

At least, the online help could show some examples using safe parentheses.

My build was broken in cli_ure with following errors.

...
Microsoft (R) Visual C# .NET Compiler version 7.10.6001.4
for Microsoft (R) .NET Framework version 1.1.4322
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation 2001-2002. All rights reserved.

fatal error CS2007: Unrecognized command-line option:
'-keyfile:..\..\wntmsci11.pro\bin\cliuno.snk'
dmake: Error code 1, while making '../../wntmsci11.pro/bin/cli_basetypes.dll'
...

(As you can see from the error message) The C# compiler for .NET 1.1 was used,
but the version has no idea about 'keyfile' option which was introduced from
.NET 2.0. After reconfiguring with '--with-csc-path' to .NET Framework 2.0 SDK,
cli_ure could be built successfully.

To fix this issue, the configure script needs to enforce C# compiler for .NET
2.0 or above, and to add .NET 2.0 SDK path to PATH variable (instead of .NET 1.1
SDK path) when no '--with-csc-path' specified.

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Mar 16 23:55:24 +

One thing that seems to have been missed in all this is that images in Draw
fundamentally do have a size and it is measured in cm or inches as shown on the
ruler that surrounds the image. All we are asking for is the ability to select
how many pixels per unit length are saved into the raster image on export.

Now, I quite like nmailhot's suggestions here as I think they encompass a few
different use cases that I have personally seen and they don't seem to be well
enunciated here yet:

(1) A user has drawn a diagram in Draw. A publisher specifies that the diagram
must be 8.25cm wide so the drawing is this size. The publisher then says that
they would really rather a TIFF than any other form of diagram so please provide
the diagram at 300dpi meaning 974px wide. (discoleo: I'm not making this up...
you may have more experience of preprint stuff than others here, but these are
instructions to authors from publishers)

(2) The user then wants to put this same diagram on their web page. They know
that the rest of their graphics and their web page layout are set up for 400px
wide so they then want to export a graphic at that size.

Please note that I have been able to talk about these things without mentioning
loaded terms such as resolution or dpi. As a user, I truly don't care about
whether you call them lpi dpi ppi or anything else you may care to mention. In
fact, I'd probably prefer that you scrapped all of those terms and gave me the
option to specify how the export was performed in pixel/inch, pixel/cm and
perhaps throw in some others that might be useful such as pixel/mm and pixel/pt.
(since the experts apparently can't agree on what terms like dpi means and
some experts here are arguing that the rest of the world's current usage is
wrong and that they are right...)

Thinking through the different suggestions that have been offered here, I have
tried to distil what, in my mind at least, is the difference between the ideas
that I like and those that I dislike. One thing that jumped out at me was that
discoleo's mockup and suggestions are heavily influenced by what he declares to
be his workflow:

In general, when I (or a user) create a work, I will have to
decide beforehand, what is the purpose of this work:
 A.) Display it on screen
 B.) Print it

This workflow is the opposite of what normally happens in my experience. You end
up using the same graphic or perhaps a derived graphic in both print and on
screen and you need to be able to export an image from Draw at any stage.
Throwing words around like pragmatic and telling us that users need to be
protected from themselves doesn't help here. Providing a user interface that is
sufficiently flexible to fit the user's preferred workflow does help.

I'm almost feeling that the more discoleo argues about this bug, the more he is
arguing against this feature even been useful, which to me means that he doesn't
understand the use cases for it. In particular, the insistence on using
pragmatic pixel/inch values is problematic as it makes use case 2 impossible
to fulfil.

On the other hand, the interface suggested by nmailhot allows the user to choose
how the export should be performed in a variety of different ways. The user can
choose either the size in pixels or the pixels/cm (or inch etc) which gives us
the ability to pass use cases 1 and 2 that I have highlighted. However, I would
suggest that the screen vs print resolution could be collapsed into just one
dropdown to make the interface simpler. Additionally, the ability to export at
different page sizes seems orthogonal to the raster export and instead a feature
that should be on a vector export dialogue box.

Final comments -- nmailhot suggested this little gem in the export interface:

   ( ) Selected (o) Visible area ( ) Whole page

YES PLEASE!! That would be fantastic. I spend too much time resizing the page
down to the graphic size (often by trial and error) so that I can export to PDF
only the image and not the surrounding whitespace. (These PDFs are usually fed
into pdflatex as graphics).

Also, just to pick nits... discoleo wrote However, pixels have NO dimension.
That is true up to the point where a resolution header is inserted in the
image and is quite common in many raster image formats. I struggle to see how
this comment (along with much of discoleo's lecture series on printers and dots)
has anything to do with how to allow the user to change the number of pixels
exported by Draw.

When writing an abbreviation for a decade, such as the '80s for the 1980s, the
apostrophe points the wrong way -- it acts as if it were opening a quoted
passage, when it should be pointed toward the implied century. It is annoying
to have to manually clean up after these smart quotes errors. The same with some
archaic contractions like [i]'tis or [i]'twas, etc.

I think the work for issue 1598 has made this RFE somewhat obsolete, as the zoom
dialog has changed to integrate the view layout controls and a zoom slider has
been added to the status bar.

For more info see http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/the_multiple_page_view and
http://specs.openoffice.org/writer/statusbar/Multiple_Pages_View_and_Zoom_Control.odt
. Also see issue 30522.
