If a document has no spelling mistake, invoking the spell check with F7 shows no
language in the related field. This is misleading for the user who can think
that there is no mistake because the spell checker is not correctly installed.

The screenshots in the linked topic are rather explanatory.

Seen on the go-oo.org version (Ubuntu users in the linked topic) but also on the
vanilla version 3.2.1 on xubuntu 10.04 for me.

+1. On 3.2.1 Sun version on xubuntu 10.04. The font (put in ~/.fonts) works fine
with Mousepad (Shift+letter gives a phonetic sign) but doesn't in OOo (you get a
capital letter).

Both figures in document attached have been cropped (upper side) to remove their

Regression in 3.2. Now if a selection is pasted after a paragraph having a list
setting (bullet/number either from direct formatting or from paragraph style),
that list is also applied to the whole pasted part.

If the list setting is removed, then the pasted selection correctly gets its
initial formatting. This extra step to remove the list should not be necessary.
A paste operation should forget about the previous formatting.

Hi devs,

I know this is a strange report since it can't be reproduced easily. But please
have a look at the link in the URL field above. We are seeing in the forum
reports about recovered files changed to hashes especially after a power loss.
But not only. And OS is not only Windows.

This problem has clearly started with 3.0 version. I've linked as many threads
as I could find in one of the post. They tend to prove that there is something
behind that. It's not a general issue (else we would have much more of them).
But I'm sure there is some application maybe interfering with temporary files.
In the past, if temporary files were touched, OOo could not save the file but
that was all; in this new problem, the content is changed to hashes or pound
signs.

Thanks to have a look. Are there at least some precise questions to be asked to
the users in such cases?

To devs: have you read the thread linked and tried by yourselves??? The problem
is pretty reproducible with _the file attached in the forum thread_. People take
time to tackle with this austere bug report system so please bear with their
first report!

I don't understand why this is a duplicate of Issue 105535. In that report, the
fix was to set the anchor to page. And here the problem is with the anchor being
set to page!

Moreover, there is no crash at all, just pics getting hidden.

Some experiments with 3.1.1:

Making a document based on a template (made in Oct. 2008) and then exporting it
in .doc: MS Word 2003 can't edit pages after first one if both a table in main
text and in footer. See attachment.

Making a document based on a template (made at same time, Oct. 2008) but without
tables in the template: export works fine, even if both tables in main text and
footer.

It seems there is a trouble with tables made with previous versions of OOo when
exported to .doc format.

On the other hand, it would mean that the AutoSave feature does override the
previous version of the file at each autosave operation. So if the user makes a
mistake after an operation (buggy) that clears the undo log and autosave
happens, there is no way to come back.

The current process is more robust IMHO because it gives the user the decision
to save definitively or not. If you just want to make some trials on a file
without changing it, autosave would be counter-productive.

With 3.1 (final release) on W2k.

If I create a table with an AutoText made with 2.x OOo version, when exported to
.doc, the table loses some formatting but is visible with MS Word 2003.
- If I open it with OOo 2.4.1, the table layout is changed
- If I open it with OOo 3.1, the table is partly invisible. In the Navigator, I
can see that additional tables have been created. If I delete a table and undo
that action, I can see the table fine!

If I create the same table layout in 3.1, no problem. If I copy an 'old' table
in the document, same problem as the original AutoText table.

Here are 3 attachments:
- Tables.odt is the original document with a table inserted by AutoText, another
copied and pasted from that one and a 3rd made in 3.1
- Tables.doc is the exported version
- Tables doc saved in ODF.odt is the .doc version above opened with OOo 3.1 and
saved back to .odt

Note that there is no dataloss because the content.xml file from the Tables doc
saved in ODF.odt version still has the data but it's very difficult to retrieve
them from OOo.

Reproducible on W2k with OOo 3.0.1.

Steps:
- Create a new document
- Insert several notes
- Save and close
- Open the file again
- Go in a note, type some text and hit the Save button
- You end up at the end of the document or in the last note.

A change of the style would mean a change of perhaps other indexes in the
document
- Of course, that's the point using styles! If a user want another formatting,
he can create a new set of styles.

Thanks for the tip, indeed. But user can't apply a custom character.

Setting of the Content x styles is rather misleading since the have the dots
checked in the tabs configuration.

Issue 89097 is for another situation and is not a duplicate. The spirit of 89097
is to skip the file association but activating it automatically when there is no
MS Office on the machine. So if OOo detects that the user doesn't have MSO,
then, OOo should automatically open the .doc, ... files. Hence, just don't ask
the user about that. But if MSO is installed, then let the user chose and keep
asking him at OOo install.

Simply removing the option was a big mistake that hasn't answer anything (with
opposite consequences!).

I confirm that under W2k and OOo 3.0.1, files with tables and done with a
previous version (not sure if OOo 3.0.0 is included or not) make MS Word (2003)
crash/hang, trying to repaginate the document.

Tried the following:
- open a .odt made with 2.4.x with 3.0.1 (with lots of tables)
- save as .doc
- open with MS Word 2003 - crash
- open that same .odt with 2.4.1 and save as .doc
- open with MS Word 2003 - OK.

Tried to reproduce by making a sample file with 2.4.1 then opening it with 3.0.1
and saving as .doc but can't reproduce that. Some specific formatting of tables
may trigger that.

Came here when looking for another issue. This one (1) seems to be almost fixed.
The only problem is when you paste the word between a word and a punctuation
mark (works in all other cases) with the keyboard. Dragging it with the mouse
works perfectly.

So here, with the keyboard:
This is a sentence. Another sentence. - This is a sentence. sentenceAnother.

Is it possible to make clear what this issue is for? At the beginning, it was
for skipping the MS file association dialog. Now that the dialog has been
completely removed (not exactly what had been asked BTW), users use this report
to vote also for the come back of the file association dialog.

To avoid any confusion, all users that want to have that dialog back should
remove their votes from this one and vote for Issue 96594 filed few months ago.

For information, installing a dictionary the old way in OOo 3 still works fine
(even with the wizard DicOOo)!!!
I just tried on W2k with OOo 3 putting the old files (from the 2.4.1 profile) in
my user profile .../wordbook folder (including the dictionary.lst).

See thread given in URL field.

Create a document, insert several pages (either adding text or with manual page
breaks).
Activate headers, uncheck the Same content left/right.
Change the spacing - it applies on the right (odd) pages only!
NB: close OOo, do it again, works fine afterwards!!!

In the Header tab of the page style again, set a background color - it applies
on the right (odd) pages only! (even after restart this time).

Now save, close and reopen the file - both headers are fine.

NB: same for footers

Restarting doesn't help. After a quick test, here is the workaround: edit the
writer.xcu file in user
profile/openoffice.org/3/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office and remove
the node DefaultFont, i.e. the following lines:
 node oor:name=DefaultFont
  prop oor:name=StandardHeight oor:type=xs:int

For information (deleting the whole OOo profile is a bit rude), just close OOo
and restart it (including quickstarter) and you can again change the font (but
still once).

So it means that if a dictionary (for 'All users') is removed by admin (because
no need of that language and to clear the tickmarks in the languages list), it

Do you confirm that if you set a custom format for the envelope, it's kept
afterwards? NB: I'd tried myself also and I can reproduce the problem.

Can you detail what are the steps for that (in the forum if you don't mind)?

Can't reproduce your issue with official version (OOo 2.4.1 Sun) under xubuntu

So this is certainly linked to your distribution. Can you install the official

What do you mean?
Aren't the dics for all users installed in the installation folder (vs. user
profile)? If so, can OOo make the difference at uninstall???

If the bundled dics are removed, are they reinstalled at next upgrade?

Thanks for the information and the blog entry:
http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/internal_windows_installer_registration_data
(from is I guess)

But something is still confusing: who doesn't its job here? OOo not detecting
that key or MS Installer?

The issue is fixed but can't OOo installation be improved to take care of such
situation? This is really a geek solution and there are some threads in the
forums about that. How many haven't cared looking for it and just forgot about
OOo?

Default tabulations cannot be removed.
Only workaround is to go to Tools Options OpenOffice.org Writer General,
and enter a large number in the tab stop field.

Or at least provide this method in the documentation. See thread linked above.

It can be useful to have a character style with a different language to quote in
a foreign language. Sometimes, foreign excerpts have to be inside a paragraph,
therefore, a paragraph style can't be used.

That's why we need to know exactly what are the char styles that have been
tweaked or not.

Then how do you explain that a change in the Default paragraph style is cascaded
to the character styles?

Why characters styles have not the same behavior as paragraph styles???

Then, why show entries in the settings of the style?

Perhaps the issue should be changed to: 'Show only modified style settings' to
avoid any confusion between Organizer tab (when empty) and the other tabs.

A character style inherits the Default paragraph configuration until user adds
modifications. But modifications made to the Default paragraph style (and
therefore to the Default and all other character styles) don't cascade to the
character styles.

Example: change the language, the font, ... of the Default paragraph style
= the character styles still show the former configuration.

However, if you apply any character style, the new settings are taken into
account (language for spell check, font, ...). Moreover, the Organizer tab shows
correctly the changes (i.e. no change for language and font, ...).

It seems that checking the Use printer metrics for text formatting option i nthe
general settings fixes the problem:

Use printer metrics for text formatting
Specifies that printer metrics are applied for printing and also for formatting
the display on the screen. If this box is not checked, a printer independent
layout will be used for screen display and printing.

But a printer independent layout should be fine every time, shouldn't it? Why
the font display should be different between edit mode and print preview?

This bug is still in the 2.4 version!
See here: http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7t=5145

Workaround:
Insert a table and caption it the way you want (in an area of the master
document that you can edit).
Other captions from sub-document sections should be updated.
Delete the new table and its caption (you can use the undo button).

At next load, if the fields are not correct, hit F9 to update them. Same for
figures.

The print preview doesn't render the font the same way than in edit mode (but it
keeps the same cell size, which is fine). Therefore, it can lead to blank spaces
at print because the text is more compact in the print preview than in the edit
mode while the cell size is the same.

See attachment, left is the edit mode, right is the print preview. Line feeds
are not at the same place. A blank space is visible (red frame).

It means that the edit mode is not consistent with the print preview, user has
to check systematically the layout and can't rely on the edit mode.

Following Issue 87961, the Find and Replace feature add an 'x' to the string
that is looked for and replaced:

Search for: .* (with formatting like bold, italics, ...)
Replace by:
String is replaced and an 'x' is added: a bold word - a boldx word ('bold'
being bold).

NB: doesn't occur if the string is at the end of document last paragraph.
Doesn't occur if no formatting is set for the searched string.

And yes, I've looked at the priority but this is a showstopper for anyone using
the Find and Replace feature with formatting.

I know, this is a longstanding request but according to Issue 3910, I've not
seen any specific report for this problem (not even in Issue 12138). Or please
indicate which is the leading issue for that.

OOo follows the rule that any odd page is right and any even page is left.

Even if it's a standard rule for books, many users don't have to follow that
rule. So please add an option to disable it. Not all the OOo users are
publishing books!

The main concern is that page numbering is a real mess. Even if blank pages are
not printed, they're taken into account for page numbering.

I set this issue as P2 because it does mark a severe problem which affect a
significant number of customers according to the number of duplicate issues
here and threads in the OOo forums.

This is a so common question in forum. The worst is that many users think the
unzipped files are the shortcuts to the applications. Then they are lost to see
all the files.

See the thread linked above for the whole context.

When the URLs recognition is activated, URLs are changed into hyperlinks but as
a direct formatting, the Internet Link and Visited Internet link are not used at
all. Character style is not changed.

However, if you modify the Internet character style to set the language to none,
that setting is immediately transfered to the hyperlinks! - wavy red lines
disappear.

Moreover, if you click the link, it's changed into what looks like a visited
internet link (but still no character style) but the spell checking still
doesn't check the string even if the character style has got back its language
setting! And the Visited Internet link character style is not even linked to the
Internet link character style.

Shouldn't OOo changed the character style of a recognized URL to the relevant
character style?

NB: checked on Linux and W2k with OOo 2.4.

Issue 49785 is still active, even if it has no votes. This one should be closed
as duplicate.

Isn't it the same problem as Issue 49754 ?

This is related to Issue 11038 (could not reopen it so I create this one).

It has been said in issue above that the update style feature works only for the
currently selected text. This is not what is implied by the help file:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOoAuthors_User_Manual/Writer_Guide/Modifying_styles#Updating_a_style_from_a_selection

See also the thread in the URL field for the discussion on the forum.

Either this is a bug or the help file needs rework.
