As I explained in my comment, issue 65999 was erroneously closed. As the
analysis here is more detailed and has a ready to run testcase, I am reopening
this issue here rather than 65999.

Building fails when you configure with --disable-vba. The problem seems to be
that the makefile.mk files in the vbahelper/ subdirectory don't test for
ENABLE_VBA. The error message complains that oovbaapi.rdb is not found (which
is quite understandable since the oovbaapi module isn't built when --disable-vba
is set).

When you add the ENABLE_VBA guards to the vbahelper module there is another
build failure in filter/source/msfilter while building libmsfilterli.so.

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lvbahelperli

Apparently the filter depends on vbahelper. I don't see how to fix this
dependency.

It seems that at the moment there is no good workaround for this issue.
--disable-mozilla seems to break OOo in strange ways. See issue #110246.

I wanted to build with --disable-mozilla to avoid issue #108953, but when
testing the resulting build I found that the Macro Security... button no
longer works. It's not greyed out but clicking it doesn't do anything anymore.
If I add the --enable-mozilla switch again and leave everything else unchanged,
the button works.

Please, can someone give me a workaround for this problem. We have a lot of
crashes due to 108953 and don't need the ldap functionality. How can I build
without it without breaking something else. The switch --disable-ldap doesn't
seem to help. The library libldap50.so is still built.

When attempting to print the document ba.odt from issue #96281 on a non-default
printer (i.e. in the print dialog I choose a different printer in the drop-down
box) OOo crashes. The crash is reproducible every time but requires that the
sticky notes sidebar is visible. If it is turned off in Options, the crash does
not occur. So it appears to be yet another bug introduced with the oh-so-pretty
sticky notes. I see the crash under Linux with OOo 3.0.1 and above. I will
attach a backtrace and valgrind run from 3.2.1 m13. I could not reproduce the
crash under Windows.

I'm reopening this as a DEFECT, because the Wizard allows you to create these
queries. IOW, even a non-technical user who never enters the realm of SQL can,
by simply clicking through the wizard, end up with an error message he does not
understand and a broken query in his datasource. If this feature is not
supported for Calc datasources, then the query wizard should not present other
queries in the dialog to select the source table.

Even better from a usability standpoint would be for the wizard to present the
query in the selection but to refuse this setting with a message saying This
selection is unsupported for the current data source. That way users won't be
confused why they sometimes (for MySQL etc. databases) have queries in this
dialog and sometimes don't. In any case, this is a defect of the wizard. A
wizard must not allow the selection of non-working choices and the creation of
broken queries. That defeats the whole point of having a wizard, which is to
make things accessibly by non-technical users.

1. Create an HSQL database
2. Create a table t
3. Create a query select * from t and save it as q1
4. Try to create a 2nd query select * from q1. This produces the error The
query cannot be executed. It contains no valid table.

The problem is also reproducible if you Use Wizard to create Query to create
the 2nd query.

With a MySQL db this works.

this problem. Strangely enough it does not seem to affect all documents with
notes. Can someone tell me what the specific circumstances are that trigger this
behaviour and if there is some way to fix affected documents (removing the notes
is not an option).

NOT USE OOo!
3. Mark all text in the file and Copy it to the clipboard

If you look at the original text you'll see that OOo has replaced the w from

This bug has been introduced with the new side bar comment system.

NOTE: This is NOT a copy'n'paste bug. If you do the above procedure with OOo 2.4
and save the document and then open it with OOo 3.x, OOo corrupts the comment,

1. Open a new empty writer document.
2. Set the zoom factor so that only half of the writer document fits on the
screen vertically, i.e. you get a vertical scroll bar.
3. Insert/Comment
4. Paste lots of text into the comment. E.g. use the example text from issue
108709: http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/67439/ms3.txt
5. The first UI bug is that the comment is not rendered completely until you
click into it.
6. Try to edit the end of the comment's text. The first usability issue is that
I need to scroll both the comments own scrollbar and the document's scrollbar to
get to the end of the comment text. The bigger problem is that when you type
something OOo scrolls the document's scrollbar (NOT the comment's own
scrollbar!) back up so that the cursor (and the text I type) is no longer
visible and I have to type blind.

I don't buy the people will complain that they missed a comment argument. When
the document creator has hidden a comment, then the comment is obviously not
meant for consumption by receivers of the document who are not told specifically
about it. Why else would he have hidden the comment?
You are thinking about techies. Those can use the navigator to find all
comments.

About not being worth an option. That's a good point, but we already have an
option for it that is perfectly applicable. It's the option to show hidden text.
Obviously this should make the side pane with the comments re-appear because it
makes the text the comments are attached to appear. This further eliminates your
argument that people could be bothered by missing a comment. There is no
indication that there is any hidden text in a document unless you decide to turn
on the option to show it. So far, no one has complained. I don't see how
comments should be different from the main text. And if I may remind you, before
the side pane was introduced, comments were exactly like text. The little boxes
disappeared completely when the text was invisible, unless showing hidden text
was enabled. All I want is to have the old behaviour back. If it was okay back
then, it's okay now.

We have to scenarios where hidden comments come into play. The first one is when
parts of a document are hidden/unhidden on demand (through an interactive
extension) and comments related to hidden text are not supposed to be read
(because they don't apply). The second are comments that contain data only for
consumption by our extension.

In both cases I don't want the user experience to suffer by a sub-optimal zoom
factor and an empty side panel that will confuse ordinary users (who wonder if
this is a graphic bug and they should be seeing something there), but this is
what OOo currently does.

Open the attached document. It contains one annotation but it is hidden. However
OOo still shows the annotation area to the right of the document and adjusts the
zoom factor accordingly. Ideally the annotation area should not be present at
all if no annotations are visible. If that is not possible, at least adjust the
zoom factor as if it were not there, so that it is scrolled out of view when
opening the document.

Can someone tell me which Makefile/script/settings file is (or should be)
responsible for setting these permissions. Then I could check in my build why

The following does not work reliably

{ swriter macro:d } ; swriter foo.odt

Sometimes nothing happens (i.e. foo.odt is not opened). If I introduce a sleep
between the 2 calls like this

{ swriter macro:d } ; sleep 2 ; swriter foo.odt

it works all the time. There seems to be a race condition in OOo's start code
that causes the first command to prevent the execution of the second when the
second is started while the 1st has not yet finished running.

I can reproduce this under Linux and Windows XP (with Cygwin).

Note that while this testcase may seem contrived we found this in a real world
environment. It happens when one or several 3rd party applications launch OOo
processes in rapid succession.

The crash can also be reproduced without installing the uno.pkg extension. To do
this, change the instructions as follows

1. Instead of WollMux.uno.pkg download version 5.9.3 of WollMuxBar.jar from
http://forge.osor.eu/frs/?group_id=11

4b. After the normal step 4, edit the wollmux.conf to add the following line at
the end

ALLOW_EXTERNAL_WOLLMUX true

5.-7. Instead, after closing all OOo instances launch

java -jar WollMuxBar.jar

This will start OOo via the bootstrap mechanism. The dialog described in step 8.
will pop up. The remaining steps are the same.

As you can see even when just communicating with OOo via the socket connection,
it will crash. In this scenario there's none of our code executing in OOo's JVM.
As you will also notice, in this scenario OUR GUI remains even after OOo
crashes, because it's not our Java code that crashes.

The attached document opens fine with OOo versions 3.2. OOo 3.2 complains that
the document is corrupted. If you say Yes to the question on whether OOo
should repair the document, the complete text is gone. Whatever property caused
OOo 3.2 to become confused seems to be injected by our document management
system (a commercial system used in the e-government sector). It seems that ALL
documents I check out from the DMS are affected.

Tested under Linux and Windows.

If you click the button in the attached document, OOo will consume all CPU and
memory. Depending on your system you may need to do a hard reset. The problem
happens when the macro attempts to enumerate over the 1st paragraph to which the
folding mark line in the left margin is anchored. The problem only happens when
enumerating via the bookmark. If the enumeration is done via the
ThisComponent.Text object, the paragraph can safely be enumerated. The macro
code is as follows:

ThisComponent.Bookmarks.getByIndex(0).getAnchor().createEnumeration().nextElement().createEnumeration()

The issue has been confirmed under Windows and Linux.

The attached document has an InputUser textfield (inserted manually via the
GUI). The textfield's XDependentTextField.getTextFieldMaster() method returns a
field master whose only connection to the text field seems to be that it lists
it in its DependentTextfields property. Other than that it does not seem to be a
real field master at all. It does not control the field's content nor does it
show up in the document's XTextFieldSupplier.getTextFieldMasters() collection.

The real fieldmaster can be obtained via
getByName(com.sun.star.text.fieldmaster.User.FOO). Interestingly this field
master controls the actual content of the field but does not list it in its
DependentTextFields property.

To look at this yourself, open the attached test document, open the Basic IDE,
single-step to End Sub and then use the Watch window to examine the
fakeFieldMaster and realFieldMaster variables.

Currently, when a mail merge is performed, all the usual events such as OnCreate
are broadcast via the GlobalEventBroadcaster. This is a problem because

- it reduces performance, sometimes drastically depending on what kinds of and
how many extensions are listening for events and how they react to them. Even a
single extension that returns immediately from the event listener will slow down
the mail merge measurably.

- it hurts stability: I regularly encounter freezes during mail merge, when an
extension is installed that processes these temp documents, even if it only
reads info from them. I guess this is because OOo somehow suffers ill effects
from the many accesses to disposed objects (because the extension cannot control
the document lifetime and it is very short, it is almost certain that the
extension will access the temp document after it has been disposed). Note that
I'm NOT talking about the extension having problems due to the
DisposedExceptions. The extension catches them and stops processing the
document. But OOo does not seem to react kindly to the high number
DisposedExceptions it has to throw.

- it has no useful application (AFAICS): Extensions cannot do something
meaningful with these temporary documents, because they are an implementation
detail of the mail merge and exist only for a short time. There is no point in
exposing this implementation detail at all.

- extensions can't ignore these temp. documents. AFAICS there is no way to
distinguish them from ordinary documents. They are invisible, sure, but that's
too coarse a filter. Some external apps create invisible documents that may need
to be processed by an extension. In earlier versions of OOo, these temporary
documents had a URL that included .tmp which could be used to ignore these
documents but this has changed in OOo 3.2 (which is why I'm reporting this now).
Now they no longer have a URL at all.

To avoid these problems I suggest that

- events should not be reported for temporary mail merge documents. These
documents are an implementation details whose properties may (and in the past
have) change without notice. They should not be exposed to application code.

- If reporting of these events is desired, they should be broadcast on a
different event broadcaster to avoid the slowdown when someone is listening on
the GlobalEventBroadcaster.

- At the very least there should be a fast way of telling these temporary
documents (or their events) apart from other documents/events, so that
extensions can minimize the time spent accessing these temp documents. However I
consider this only a band-aid, because the performance issues do not disappear
completely and OOo stability may still suffer.

OOo crashes whenever I attempt to open the attached template. This issue has
already been present in at least m60. I don't know how far back it goes. I can
only reproduce it on Linux (vanilla build, not Go-ooo.org). Under Windows
everything seems to be okay.

Looking at the diff between m59 and m60, it is clear that the 2nd ENDIF that has
been added in the change is misplaced. It is supposed to be at the end of the
file to match up with the 2nd IF that has been added. IOW, the .IF
$(ENABLE_VBA)!=YES is supposed to bracket the complete makefile.

I think issue 105322 should be a release blocker. It is a regression causing
data loss simply by saving an existing document.

@sb: I would think that the classloader set by OOo so far wasn't arbitrary.
Surely it was capable of loading the standard classes from the JRE. What else
could JEditorPane() want a classloader for?

@milek_pl: Have you tested with Java 6? I don't see the problem with Java 5,
either. And I would very much like to set the context classloader at the
beginning of my extension and be done with it, however the affected thread, the
event-dispatching thread, is not under my complete control. Something resets its
context classloader at unknown (to me) times.

@oj: If I understand you correctly, in the use case you describe a new thread is
started for every call. Rather than attempting to shave off time from thread
creation, wouldn't it be better to eliminate this extensive creation of threads
in the first place? After all, even without the context classloader code, thread
creation takes time. That the eliminated code is called for every database
access does not mean that eliminating it will result in a significant speed
increase. It all depends on how much time is wasted elsewhere.

Aside from that point, this seems like it is very specific to the database
backend. Would it not be possible to treat those threads specially and have
their creation path avoid the context classloader setting code, whereas other
threads would still use it?

And as a bandaid for the current issue, would it not be possible to set the
context classloader at least for the non-application-controlled threads such as
the event dispatching thread. I really don't think OOo 3.2 can ship if commonly
used extensions just break. I think people will much rather live with the
database performance they've now had to live with for years.

I don't think the world will ever be cleaned up. New incorrect uses of the
context classloader comparable to that in JEditorPane() will spring up as fast
as they are fixed in other places. There are many 3rd party Java libraries. How
could we ever verify them all?
I am a very experienced Java developer and I freely admit that I have only a
basic understanding of classloaders. And I do think I am very representative of
Java developers in this regard. It is irrelevant if developers should care more
about classloaders and should take more time to study all of their intricacies.
They don't. And this won't change. Classloaders are and will forever remain one
of the obscure aspects of Java that developers only care about when things
break. It is telling that it is a part of Swing's core code that has brought
this issue to life. If even Sun's developers can't get context classloader use
right, what do you expect?

So I believe that the only safe choice (and IMHO only a safe choice is
acceptable in an important application such as OOo) is to keep the current
AttachGuard as the general case and only add the optimization where it is known
to be safe. And since the normal AttachGuard can simply call the code of the
FastAttachGuard and then add the classloader setup code, there is no redundant
code that would cause a maintenance issue.

Please reconsider the removal of the classloader setting code. The performance
gains seem very dubious. It's unlikely that anything in the OOo context would
spawn 1000s of threads which would be required to make the time savings visible
on a macroscopic scale. Was this change triggered by actual results from
*profiling* a real world use case? How large were the measured performance
gains?
If there were no actual measurements to justify the change this seems like a
prime example of premature optimization (which as we all know is the root of all
evil).

Even if there are performance gains in some special situations, this has to be
weighed against the negative consequences. As we can see from this issue you are
buying your performance gains with complete breakage of existing components.
Buying a little speed in a few use cases with complete breakage of widely
deployed packages would be considered very unwise by most people.

The worst thing is that this creates a permanent Sword of Damocles over the
heads of Java component developers. There is no reason to expect that
JEditorPane is the only code making the assumption that the context classloader
is non-null. And there is no reason to expect that even if this bug is fixed in
Swing it will not reoccur at some other place as code gets rewritten and added
to the JRE. The Java execution environment OOo sets up with its null context
classloader is obviously unusual, something not even the Java guys at Sun test
for, not to speak of the many 3rd party libraries written by developers with
even less knowledge of the hairy details of Java.

And it cannot be emphasized enough that there is no general workaround for this
problem (at least none has been mentioned here so far). There is no way I can
simply set the context classloader of the EDT myself in my component. I've tried
but it only works temporarily but gets reset at some point, which means I would
need to sprinkle my code with classloader-setting code. And I have no way of
knowing in which places it's needed. Swing and the JRE are moving targets. And
if 3rd party libraries trigger this problem, there is no workaround at all,
because I can't change the 3rd party library.

So please back out that change until you can offer a reliable and generally
applicable way for a Java component to ensure a non-null context classloader
that includes 3rd party libraries.

If in a thread you call code that has requirements on the context class
 loader,
you must ensure that those requirements are met

Sure, but AFAIK there is no documented requirement that instantiating a
JEditorPane would require a certain context classloader.

What is the stack trace of the caught NullPointerException?

What's the status of this issue? This is affecting our WollMux extension, too
and I have a bad feeling about the posted workaround. If it was about a Thread
I've spawned myself it would be a different matter, but fiddling with the
classloader of the event dispatching thread doesn't sound like a good idea. I'm
sure application code is not supposed to do that.

The problem seems to occur only if a Java extension is installed. If I run the
attached BeanShell macro on a plain OOo installation, the context classloader of
the EDT is non-null. However if a Java extension is installed, the EDT's context
classloader is null.

It appears that when an OnNew event handler (or as in the case of the test
document an autostart macro) closes a document loaded via loadComponentFromUrl
before it has returned, OOo crashes or freezes.

The Tools/Options/Internet/Proxy UI does not allow setting No proxy for when
the proxy is set to System. This is overly restrictive. There are several
scenarios when it makes sense to exclude certain servers from being proxied even
if you otherwise want to use your system's proxy setting. In my case the proxy
is not supposed to be used for connections to local Intranet servers (because
obviously a direct connection is faster and causes less network traffic).

I have created an extension which sets the following config

prop oor:name=ooInetProxyType oor:finalized=true
   value1/value
/prop
prop oor:name=ooInetNoProxy oor:type=xs:string oor:finalized=true
 value*.mylocaldomain.de/value
/prop

i.e. the combination of System and a no proxy for list and it seems to work.
The proxy is used for Internet connections but not for mylocaldomain.de. So it
seems that it is only the UI that prevents the setting of this combination. The
actual network code seems to deal with it just fine.

Steps to reproduce:

1. unopkg add --shared proxyoffdoesntwork.uno.pkg
2. Remove test user's .openoffice.org directory
3. Launch soffice
4. Check Tools/Options/Internet/Proxy

Expected behaviour:

The extension sets

prop oor:name=ooInetProxyType
 value0/value
/prop

so the Proxy should be None.

Actual behaviour:

Proxy is System.

Further notes:

If the extension is installed in the user layer (i.e. without --shared), the
setting takes effect, however that is not an appropriate workaround, because the
goal is to provide a system-wide default configuration via the extension.

Likewise, adding oor:finalized=true makes it work in the shared layer, but
that is undesirable, too, because the goal is to provide a working default
configuration not to force the setting on the user.

OOo should respect the proxy setting in the shared layer even when it is not
finalized. This is necessary to allow a system-wide default configuration via an
extension.

As the attached test document and screenshots demonstrate, line breaks within
cells differ between Windows (2000 in this case) and Linux, even when Use
printer metrics for text formatting is NOT ACTIVE. The whole point of printer
independent text formatting IMHO is to achieve a look that is consistent among
different workstations. If this does not work among different OSes, then the
feature is pointless in heterogeneous environments. Furthermore it's confusing
in this case because admins will think that unchecking Use printer metrics for
text formatting is a good thing even though the results would be more
consistent with the checkbox set (assuming that the environment is homogeneous
with respect to the printers deployed, which is often the case).

When Use printer metrics for text formatting is DISABLED, then the formatting
should be printer AND operating system independent.

[sc-issues] [Issue 5658] Spreadsheet thinks a number is a string (text)

2009-05-22 Thread mux2005
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=5658

--- Additional comments from mux2...@openoffice.org Fri May 22 10:05:03

How about implementing the following things:

1. If the user enters a formula that contains arithmetic on text cells, then add
explicit conversion functions to it. I.e. the user enters A1+10 and A1
contains text, then when the user submits the formula, write
convertonumber(A1,...) + 10 into the cell, where converttonumber is a
conversion function (I don't what the actual function in Calc is called,
assuming it exists) that accepts a parameter that specifies the number format.
The number format parameter would be filled with the format appropriate for the
current locale. That way, we fix the user's mistake and create a portable
formula that will work consistently even when the spreadsheet is ported to a
different locale (because the conversion is completely explicit).
It may be useful to introduce an informational popup message such as The
formula you have just entered tries to perform arithmetic computations on string
cells. Appropriate string - number conversion functions have been automatically
added to the formula. I would advise against making this a Do you want this?
choice dialog, because there is no sensible reason for the user to reject this
transformation.

2. When opening/importing, fix all formulas with string arithmetic according to
1. Since we do not usually know the creating environment (creating program,
locale,...) and as such cannot with 100% accuracy predict the proper number
format to use for conversions, a dialog such as the following would be nice:
The document you are trying to open contains formulas that try to do arithmetic
computations with strings. OpenOffice.org can attempt to guess the proper text
- number conversion parameters. However, this may lead to incorrect results in
affected cells. If you choose 'No' below, then all affected cells will be
flagged with an error and you will have to fix them manually. Do you want OOo to
attempt to fix cells automaticall? Yes/No.

If the user chooses Yes, introduce conversion functions as in 1, making a best
effort based on whatever information we have about the document to guess the
conversion parameters. If the user chooses No, treat the affected formulas as
if they had syntax errors.

This approach will

- prevent the user from creating documents with implicit string arithmetic
(ambiguous or undefined behaviour)

- allow the user to open/import documents based on implicit string conversions
and have (most of the time) a working spreadsheet (that no longer contains
implicit conversions)

- allow the user to open/import documents based on implicit string conversions
and go the safe route of flagging all problematic cells as error for manual
inspection and fixing.

When I follow baumux instructions _exactly_ (with 3.1 m10) I end up with a
dialog that has Test3 selected but OK button disabled. However, when I reclick
Test3, OK button is correctly enabled again. So in m10 there seems to be at best
a minor visual glitch right after the dialog is shown. The original problem
seems to be gone.

@hi: Where is the sense in closing an OLDER issue as duplicate of a NEWER issue?
Isn't it usually done the other way around? And the newer issue is against a
newer version of OOo. So this move obscures the age of the issue. Furthermore
the newer issue has much less verbose steps to reproduce and less information
overall. In other words: WTF?

The button in the test document executes the simple macro

Sub Main
  range = ThisComponent.Bookmarks.getByName(test).Anchor
  range.String = range.String  Test
End Sub

which is supposed to append the word „Test“ to the text range marked by the
bookmark „test“. However, the result is incorrect. In addition to the appended
text, a „1.“ is inserted before the word „This“. The reason is that
XTextRange.getString() erroneously returns the „1.“ which is outside the
bookmark and does not even have a representation in the document model.

XTextRange.getString() must not return the item number. It is not part of the
text range.
